29. Park Jongseong
'Jinja? You guys made up for real?,' Jay whispered loudly to Mihee. 'Yes, we did,' she whispered back and smiled.
Finally.
'Ooh,' he smirked.
'What?,' she scowled at him.
'Jung Mihee!,' Professor Gong locked eyes with her. He waved his hand up, motioning her to stand up.
She stood up reluctantly, looking around. She scratched her forehead and glanced at Jay, who was busy chewing his favorite food. His nails.
'Anything more important than Korean Tradition Legal History that you would love to share with the all of us?,' he taunted, cocking his brows.
'Love it or hate it, Miss Jung, but I decide if you proceed to the next semester or not,' he shrugged.
He walked up closer to her as Jay shifted nervously. He had large Kermit eyes and pencil line thin lips with a protruding jawline. Needless to say, he had a resting creepy face. Jay had heard a lot rumors about the stack of cases pertaining to sexual harassment filed against him. Now that he had caught a close up view of him, he was thoroughly convinced that he might've just been looking their way or staring at them to earn such an allegation. He wasn't defending him in any way, though. His face was enough to scare the living lights out of anyone, and his sinister smile only seemed to be the icing on the cake.
He didn't care. If Professor Gong ever met him again and smiled at him like this, he would file a case against him in a heartbeat too.
Jay peered at Mihee. She was looking at her hands, her lips pursed up. Their professor beamed at her wider.
Jay shivered.
'Since I decide if you proceed to the next semester or not,' he repeated, his Kermit eyes boring into hers, 'You should know how to please me,' he grinned, revealing his uneven pale brown teeth.
This was it. Now Jay was fighting the physical urge to puke.
Mihee gaped at the Professor, trying to grasp the meaning of his words. 'Eh?,' her eyes widened.
'Stay quiet in my class and behave yourself, Jung Mihee. You're a couple of points away from flunking in my classes,' he snapped.
'Ah. Sorry sir,' she bowed. 'It won't happen again.'
'Sorry won't cut it,' his face hardened. Mihee gulped and tugged at her brown hair, something she often did when tensed. 'See me after your classes get over, Miss Jung,' the corner of his lip curved into a half smile as he walked back towards the blackboard.
'Yah don't go,' Jay tugged at her sleeve as soon as she sat down. Mihee scoffed.
'As if I was planning to.'
Jay saw Professor Gong's huge eyes staring in their direction, his pupils fixated at Mihee. He gave her a sharp nudge.
'He's just jealous that my parents studied with him yet turned out to be successful lawyers while he's stuck here teaching college students.'
Jay pinched her arm.
'Oww...What's wrong with you!,' she snapped.
'Jung Mihee!,' Gong screeched, making the whole class jump. 'Come out and explain what I was talking about,' he said icily. 'I-I don't...'
She looked at Jay longingly. He shrugged.
He wished he knew what Gong had been talking about so he could help his friend but he literally didn't have a single clue. Kermit the Gong was undoubtedly the most talented lullaby singer, even if he didn't know it. Jay didn't understand why he was rebuking Mihee instead of applauding her for surviving his class without dozing off.
'Midterms, Mihee,' he smirked. 'I need a perfect score from you.'
Mihee pressed the pencil she was doodling with into her notebook, breaking the tip.
'After all, you come from a family of affluent lawyers, don't you?,' he widened his large eyes and a vein on his forehead enlarged and demarcated itself clearly as his mouth twitched.
Jay recoiled.
Mihee put her head down, letting her hair cover her face as she sharpened her pencil and continued to doodle. It would have probably bothered her a year back, but now, getting chided and picked on by professors was nothing new for his friend.
Jay never said he understood, because he couldn't and he wouldn't.
He was a nixie, born to a nixie father. He was a good student and on his way to become a great lawyer, mimicking his father's immense success and popularity. Mihee, on the other hand, was an alkonost born in the family of nixies.
Her older brother and parents took after each other, leaving Mihee and her stupid, alkonost dreams of becoming an animator to collect dust.
He glanced at her finishing another strip of the comic she was making.
He sighed.
Life isn't fair.
She noticed him staring at her and looked in his direction. He beamed at her.
'Yah,' she handed him the notebook. 'This one's funny, isn't it?,' she smiled her gummy smile.
'I was reading it as you drew and wrote. It's really cool,' he chuckled.
'So, I'll see you all tomorrow. I need the projects by the end of the week. If I don't get your work, I'll make sure you don't sit for the mid terms,' Gong said and exited the room before giving Mihee another death glare.
'Ah,' Mihee stretched her arms. 'I'm thinking of not finishing the project,' she said, pulling her hair back with a hair tie.
'Wae?,' Jay narrowed his eyes.
'Because then I won't fail the exams, duh,' she flicked his forehead. 'Yah!,' he grunted.
Mihee chortled.
She grabbed his arm. 'Come on Jongry. We're gonna be late for the next class,' she started dragging him out of the classroom.
'Yah wait!,' he protested, scrolling through his phone. 'You can "socialize" later, Jay. We have a class to go to,' she scorned.
'Wait. I think I have a text from Jake. What's this?,'he squinted at the screen.
JAKE : Jay ssi, this is Hong ahjussi. Jake nim hurt himself and is at the hospital right now. I thought you should know.
Jay almost dropped the phone in stupefaction.
Jake hurt himself? What did he do? He's fine right? Did he try to-
Jay gulped and shook his head, brushing away all the nasty thoughts crossing his head.
No, no. He wouldn't do that. He never would. But what if he-
'Yah!,' Mihee shook him, bringing him back from his trance. 'What is it? Why do you look so worried?,' she looked at him with creased brows.
'What does the text say? Is everything alright?,' she bit her lip, boring her deep brown almonds into him.
'Jake is...He hurt himself. He's at the hospital,' Jay whispered.
