Chapter 35

I'm seriously starting to doubt my logic right now. Eh, oh well. If I'm good at anything, it's doing stupid things that may or may not get me killed in the process.

I blinked myself to the outer city of Volhime and attempted to take stock of my situation. (Quick note: To be frank with you, blinking is just another term for teleporting. You envision yourself in another location-somewhere you want to be. You then...know you're there. You close your eyes and tell yourself "I want to be at <insert location name here> and I know I'm there." Open your eyes, and boom, you're there. It's a really nifty ability to have when you need to get from point A to point B with little hassle.) I appeared in the marketplace of the stone brick city and looked around to get an idea of where I was.

The sound I heard next chilled me to the bone: footsteps-a fuckton of footsteps. All marching in unison without a single deviance in cadence.

I shivered and walked down the cobblestone road that led to the tempest of footsteps. I drew my sword, then summoned in my huntsman blade. With it, my pack of ghastly wolves appeared on either side of me in a wedge-shape.

"Master," The alpha male began quietly, nuzzling my thigh, "You have summoned us again."

I nodded, "Indeed I have. Be ready to throw down with our daedric friends."

"Of course," The alpha male replied. "We will fight for you, master."

Before I knew it, I had left the outer part of Volhime. Honestly, it wasn't too difficult to find the hoard when I was standing right in front of it.

"Ahm...shit," I mumbled as the storm of footsteps drew closer to me, growing louder and louder with every passing heartbeat. The size of this hoard was almost too much to comprehend. I gripped my sword tightly as they continued to advance on my location.

The hoard suddenly stopped, and a lone figure began to stride purposefully toward me.

My necklace was buzzing with energy, and the pulses of energy that came off of it made me wary of the figure whose aura seemed to have the same qualities of deadly nightshade: the aura seemed to beckon to me like how a sweet roll would attract a fat guy, but I sensed the malevolence in this figure's aura-it made me shiver.

"Helix," My mother began urgently, voice full of distress. "That...thing is a demonlord. Please, do be careful."

My optimism took a slight plunge, but I still looked forward with a grim expression on my face. "Thanks for the tip, mom."

The figure stopped a few strides away from me: he wore regal, onyx-colored armor that glittered in the light of day. His skin was a dark hue of blue, and his yellow eyes glittered with a cold, menacing light. His lips contorted into a sickly-sweet smile when he gazed at me.

"Ah, a huntsman," He mused. "You're the one that eliminated the detachment I sent to wipe out the village of Klausiin, yes?"

I returned his smile and flipped him off. "Yes, I'm your man. None of your demon lackeys lived to harm another innocent civilian when my team was done with them."

The demon lord laughed. "Innocent? You humans are no better than my kind. You pillage and slaughter members of your own simply because you feel like it. I'm merely doing your species a favor."

I felt a growl well up deep within my throat. "You think that by pillaging and slaughtering, you'll be doing my species a favor? Dude, you're fucked up. I can hardly call that a bloody favor."

The demon scum laughed again. (I must be missing out on some grand joke because I wasn't laughing at all) "No matter, I'm still conquering this city with or without your opinion."

I rolled my eyes, looked at my pack of wolves, and smiled coldly: "You have no idea who you're dealing with...Damian."

The demonlord snarled. "That is a name I no longer go by."

Now I started laughing. "Catch me if you can, you fucking assclown!" Gazing at the spectral wolf that stood beside me, I nodded once: "Go." I commanded, "Eat."

I blinked away as my pack of wolves began to tear into the first ranks of the hoard.

A few heartbeats later, I landed on wooden planks, hitting my head in the process.

I groaned, forcing my eyes open so I could figure out where I had blinked myself.

"Good, I'm back in the tavern," I murmured as I took note of the sheer silence that had enveloped the room. Everyone was gone: They were probably hiding out in some building located in the marketplace.

Forcing myself onto my feet, I looked at my pack of wolves in disbelief as they appeared around me.

"You guys immortal or something?" I asked incredulously as the alpha male approached me.

"Yes, we are creatures of the seventh ethereal plane." The alpha male explained, "We are undying."

"Seventh..." I murmured, "The plane of the wolf, right? I remember reading about that plane, but my head's a bit scrambled right now...I think I gave myself a concussion...again."

"Yes," The alpha male replied simply.

I shrugged, "Hmm, okay then. Duly noted. I gotta get to my team ASAP, so try to keep up."

I ran out of the tavern with my pack in tow behind me. It took us about ten minutes to reach the building my team was located in. All the while, I ignored the dull throbbing sensation that emanated from my head.

I pushed open the door of the shop they were in, only to hop back and land on my rear as a knife thudded into the wood of the door.

"Eat a dick, demon scum!" Analise shouted.

"Fucking hell, Ana!" I retorted, "Haven't I told you it's not nice to throw knives at people?"

"Oh, hey Helix." She called, "You're not dead yet."

"I'm glad you noticed that." I snapped back as I saw Dorrian appear in the doorway. He had a piece of mutton in his hand and a big grin on his face. He tossed me the piece of meat when I pushed myself to my feet.

"Eat up, chap." he began as I tore into the piece of mutton, "You look hungry."

I nodded, demolishing the mutton with much gusto.

"Thanks." I breathed when I finished eating, "I'm not gonna even ask where you got the mutton."

"Hey, I gotta be prepared." Dorrian replied with a wink, "And besides, I don't see you complaining."

I caught sight of Luna, and my heart fluttered at the sight of her.

"What exactly did you do, Helix?" She asked with a small grin.

I snorted, "I wiped out the first two or three ranks of demons with my friends here." I motioned toward my pack of wolves.

Luna looked at the pack in a mix of wonder and a bit of fear, "Huh, how...quaint. Why exactly do you have a minor concussion?"

I laughed nervously, "Not important. Everyone's in position, right?"

Luna loosed a huff of irritation: "Not important? I'm not naïve, you know. If you're not going to tell me what you did to give yourself a concussion, then at least let me heal the damage you caused."

"Oh, alright." I grumbled as Luna forced me to sit down in a nearby chair.

"This will only take a few moments, you grouch." She chided me in a lighthearted tone, "I'm sure you don't want to fight this hoard with a concussion, now do you?"

"...No, I don't." I mumbled.

She huffed out a laugh as she healed the damage I had inflicted on myself. When she was done, she helped me stand up.

"See? It wasn't that bad." She pointed out.

I sighed, "No, it wasn't that bad...what was I saying before Luna decided to heal my concussion?"

Ben chuckled, "You asked if everyone's in position, which they are. We've been waiting for the hoard to show up in the marketplace, but nothing's shown up yet."

I heard a crash echo somewhere in the city.

"Whelp, that's my call again." I grumbled, "I suppose you got what you wished for, Ben."

"Helix..." Luna began nervously.

"Don't worry goober, I won't get myself killed." I assured her as I flipped Ana off, "Or give myself another concussion. I assure you I'll do everything in my power to not get hurt."

She rolled her eyes: "I suppose I'll accept that response for now. Go kick those demons' asses for us."

I smiled: "You know I will."

I exited the building and listened to the storm of footsteps as the hoard approached me. I whistled to myself, strolling lazily amongst the various stalls situated in the marketplace while I waited.

A few moments of silence-the storm grew closer.

"I can do this." I told myself. "I can do this-Just be a sarcastic prick and piss off the demonlord. Yeah, this'll be a piece of cake..."
