Chapter 5: Return to Winterfell!
=========================
Kenway is sat in the main dining hall of Castle Black with Maester Aemon, still giving him riddles and the Lord Commander Joer Mormont sharing wine as Tyrion looked out the main doors and watched as Jon helped his fellow Rangers instead of look down on them.
Kenway finished his wine as Tyrion closed the door and walked towards them.
Aemon: How many winters have you seen, Lord Tyrion?
Tyrion stopped and leaned on a nearby pillar as he thought.
Tyrion: Eight. No, nine.
Aemon: All of them brief?
Tyrion: They say the winter of my birth was three years long, Maester Aemon.
Aemon: This summer has lasted nine. But reports from the citadel tell us the days grow shorter. Your family are always right eventually Black Wolf.
Maester Aemon said to Kenway as the Lord Command sat to Aemon's right and Kenway is to his left, all eyes were on Kenway as he filled his drink back to the brim.
Kenway: Winter is coming.
Aemon: This one will be long... and dark things will come with it.
Kenway: What things? Tell me, Maester.
Aemon grunted in amusement as Tyrion and the Lord Commander waited for his response.
Aemon: Lord Commander. Lord Tyrion, if you both know the nature of your destiny. Would you follow what needs to be done?
The Lord Commander grunted with a smile as he thought about it, Joer didn't know much of the Prophecy but he knew more then most, but he won't tell Kenway that, not after seeing how much Kenway badgers the Maester to tell him what he knows.
Tyrion: Me? I would avoid it, with a bottle of wine in one hand a a women's breast in the other.
Aemon: No matter how much you ask I cannot tell you young Wolf.
Kenway: So my time here is spent. I'm clearly not going to find much else.
Kenway finished his drink and stood from the table and looked to the Lord Commander.
Kenway: House Stark thanks you for you hospitality Lord Commander. I'll take my leave with you Imp.
Kenway left the room leaving the three alone as the Lord Commander looked to Tyrion.
Joer: We've been capturing wildlings. more every month. They're fleeing south. The ones who flee... say they've seen the White Walkers.
As Joer spoke Tyrion walked from the pillar to the seat in front of the two men sat at the table.
Tyrion: Yes, and the fishermen of Lannisport say they see mermaids.
Joer: One of our own Rangers swore he saw them kill his companions. He swore it right up to the moment Ned Stark chopped his head off.
Aemon: The Night's Watch is the only thing standing between the realm and what lies beyond. And it has become an army of undisciplined boys and tired old men. There are less than a thousand of us now. We can't man the other castles on the Wall. We can't properly patrol the wilderness. We've barley enough resources to keep our lads armed and fed.
Tyrion listened to the wise Maester as he continued to tell Tyrion of the Wall's and Night Watches down side.
Joer: Your Sister sits by the side of the king. Tell her... We need help.
Aemon: When Winter does come, gods help us all if that boy isn't ready...
Later that Night Kenway and Jon are walking the top of the wall in complete silence as Midnight stayed bellow, Kenway recently found out that she's scared of heights... both Stark boys were silent as they continued till the spotted the Imp of Casterly Rock pissing off the side of the Wall.
Both Jon and Kenway respectively let him finish as Tyrion put his cock away and looked to the Bastard of House Stark and the Black Wolf himself.
Tyrion walked towards them as Jon was first to speak.
Jon: I'm sorry to see you leave, Lannister.
Tyrion: It's either me or this cold, and it doesn't appear to be going anywhere.
Jon: Will you stop at Winterfell on your way south?
Tyrion: I expect I will. Gods know there aren't many feather beds between here and King's Landing.
Jon: If you see my Brother Bran, tell him I miss him. Tell him I'd visit if I could.
Tyrion: Of course.
Jon: He'll never walk again.
Tyrion: If your going to be a cripple, it's better to be a rich cripple. You take care, Snow.
Jon: Farewell, my Lord.
Tyrion and Jon shook hands as Tyrion left them both alone.
Kenway: I'm leaving with him.
Jon: I know. Thank you for coming with me. I know you did it for the library but I owe you...
Kenway: Nothing. You owe me nothing, your my Brother and that's what Brothers do. I just want you to know I would stay if I could find the answers here.
Jon: I know. Farewell Stark.
Jon said holding his hand out for a handshake, but Kenway pushed it away and hugged his brother.
Kenway: You too... Stark.
That meant the world to Jon for someone to call him his Father's name, Jon hugged Kenway tighter as they both let each other go.
Kenway: You need anything, this side or that side...
Kenway looked to the wilderness of the wall then back to his brother.
Kenway: I'm a Raven away.
Jon nodded his thanks as Kenway left Jon on his own on top of the Wall and got himself, Midnight and Shah ready to leave till he felt a pat on his shoulder and looked to see Elis no where near ready to leave.
Kenway: You need to hurry and get ready. We're riding back to Winterfell.
Elis: Actually I'm not coming with you. I'm staying here.
Kenway stopped and looked to her as she looked to the balcony above them.
Elis: The Lord Commander has offered me payed work for Castle Black. As much as you are my friend. I want to stay with Jon.
Kenway: And your okay with this?
Kenway asked the Lord Commander, who nodded in return, Kenway looked slightly sad as this is his best friend, they've been together since a nearby villager found her all alone when she was still a babe.
Kenway: Well I won't say I'm happy about it, 'cause I'm not, but you must do what you need to.
Elis: Thank you Kenny. Take care.
She said hugging Kenway, Kenway hugged back as it was a sad moment for the child hood friends.
Kenway: You too. And make sure my brother doesn't do anything stupid while I'm gone.
Elis chuckled at Kenway as Kenway mounted Shah and followed the Night's Watch transporter and Lord Tyrion down the long path towards Winterfell, meanwhile both Jon and Elis watched the Black Wolf leave sadly as Jon hugged the upset Elis...
=========================
Bran just awoke from a dream he had involving a three eyes Raven, Bran woke up understandably confused as he didn't know why he had that dream but he soon relaxed when he noticed Summer laying on the bed beside him.
Nan: The little lord's been dreaming again.
Bran looked to his left to see the Nan of Winterfell knitting on a nearby chair, what she's knitting no one will ever know but before either could say another thing Theon marches through the door.
Summer growls at someone just storming through the door as Theon visibly shit's himself and slowly makes his way into the room.
Theon: We have visitors.
Bran: I don't want to see anyone.
Bran responded with a bad attitude clearly still upset of his downfall in life.
(I'm not sorry that's a great pun)
Theon: Really? If I was cooped up all day with no one but this old bat for company, I'd go mad. Anyway, you don't have a choice. Robb's waiting.
Bran: I don't want to go.
Theon: Neither do I. But Robb's Lord of Winterfell, which means I do what he says, and you do what I say. Hodor!
The big loveable Giant known as Hodor enters the room whilst having to duck under the door frame.
Hodor: Hodor?
Theon: Help Bran down the hall.
Hodor: Hodor.
Hodor then walked over to help Bran up from his bed till Midnight ran into the room and jumped on to the bed beside Summer, everyone in the room looked to see how much bigger Midnight is compared to Summer already as Bran looked confused and Hodor watched the two wolves.
Bran: Midnight? What are you doing here?
Midnight just looked to the door as Kenway walked in with a smile on his face.
Kenway: Miss me little cub.
Bran dragged himself to sit up as Kenway walked towards Hodor.
Kenway: How are you Hodor?
Hodor: Hodor.
Hodor responded with a massive smile, Kenway patted the giant on the back as Kenway looked to Theon.
Kenway: You still here? Bran said he didn't want to go.
Theon: I listen to the Lord of Winterfell, that's your...
Kenway: I'll deal with Robb once he's done with Lord Tyrion, whilst Robb isn't here you take orders from me now. Get. Out.
Theon clenched his teeth and turned to leave the room but not before Kenway had one more thing to say.
Kenway: Theon?
Theon turned to Kenway as Bran smiled at Theon's demise.
Kenway: Be a good boy and give the stables a clean. Thanks.
Kenway took his cloak off and layed it at the foot off the bed as Theon left the room.
Hodor: Hodor?
Kenway: It's okay Hodor you can stay.
Hodor: Hodor.
Meanwhile in the Main Hall of Winterfell, Robb is sat in Eddard chair with Maester Luwin by his side whilst they both look to Tyrion and the Night's Watch recruiter.
Tyrion: I must say I received a slightly warmer welcome on my last visit.
Robb: Any man of the Night's Watch is welcome at Winterfell.
Tyrion: Any man of the Night's Watch, but not I, eh, boy?
Robb: I'm not your boy, Lannister. I'm Lord of Winterfell while my Father is away.
Tyrion: Then you might learn a Lord's courtesy.
They stop for a moment as the door opens and they all look to see Kenway, Bran and Hodor walking into the room, turns out the way you get Bran to do something is not by instructing him but persuading or manipulating him.
Tyrion: So it's true.
Tyrion said as Hodor walked passed him with Bran in his arms and Kenway sat next to Robb.
Robb: I will speak to you for disobeying my order.
Kenway: Your instructions were to get Bran here, Bran is here. I see no disobeying of your orders.
Tyrian: Hello Bran.
Tyrian said as Hodor stopped so Tyrion can speak to the young wolf.
Tyrian: Do you remember anything about what happened?
Luwin: He has no memory of that day.
Maester Luwin replied speaking up for the first time since Kenway returned to Winterfell a short while ago.
Tyrion: Curious.
Robb: Why are you here?
Kenway looked to Robb surprised by the way he's speaking to an ally of the Stark House and by the way Robb spoke to him earlier, is the power getting to Robb's head, Kenway thought to himself as he sat back in his chair.
Tyrion ignored Robb's question and looked back to Bran.
Tyrion: Would your charming companion be so kind as to kneel? My neck is beginning to hurt.
Bran: Kneel, Hodor.
Hodor did as asked and kneeled down making Bran the same level as the Lannister's Imp.
Tyrion: Do you like to ride, Bran?
Kenway smiled as he knows what's coming, he and Tyrion spoke about this all the way back to Winterfell.
Bran: Yes. Well, I mean I did like to.
Luwin: The boy has lost the use of his legs.
Tyrion: What of it? With the right horse and saddle, even a cripple can ride.
Bran: I'm not a cripple.
Tyrion: Then I'm not a dwarf. My father will rejoice to hear it. I have a gift for you.
Tyrion reached in to his cloak and pulled out a rolled up peace of parchment that Kenway knows has the plans for a special saddle to be made for Bran so he can ride a horse again.
Tyrion: Give that to your saddler. He'll provide the rest.
Tyrion then looked to Kenway, Robb and Maester Luwin as Bran began to unroll the parchment.
Tyrion: You must shape the horse to the rider. Start with a yearling and teach it to respond to the reins and to the boy's voice.
Kenway didn't really listen to Tyrion though as Kenway was more interested in what Bran will think of the plans.
Bran: Will I really be able to ride?
Tyrion: You will. On horseback you will be as tall as any of them.
Robb: Is this some kind of trick? Why do you want to help him?
Tyrion: I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples, bastards and broken things.
Kenway sat their confused and tried to figure out how he's broken, unless he's a bastard but that's not right... right? As Kenway was lost in his own world Bran smiled at Tyrion as he put the plans away and Tyrion smirked in response.
Robb: You've done my brother a kindness. The hospitality of Winterfell is yours.
Kenway looked to his older brother in surprise as to why he has only just offered Tyrion the hospitality of Winterfell.
Tyrion: Spare me your false courtesies, Lord Stark. There's a brothel outside your walls. There I'll find a bed and both of us can sleep easier.
Kenway watched as Tyrion left the hall with his guards in tow.
Kenway: What the hell was that?
Robb: Give us the room.
The room quickly cleared as it just left Robb and Kenway in the room alone.
Kenway: What aren't you telling me?
Robb: Whilst you were on your little trip. An assassin in the night came for Bran and tried to kill him and mother with a dagger from that man you just tried to defend. That Imp is the one who did that to Bran.
Kenway: Horse shit. If he did it he wouldn't show his face here again and he wouldn't have told Bran how to ride a horse... besides look at the Imp. there is no way he could over power Bran and throw him out the window.
Robb: How do explain the Assassin?
Kenway: Maybe it was the Queen, we all know how much she despises the Imp. Maybe Bran saw something he wasn't supposed to see and she pushed him out the window then to cover her own ass she put the blame on Tyrion.
Robb thought about it for a second as that theory has never crossed their minds, Robb looked to his younger brother as Kenway isn't a stupid man, completely the opposite, but Robb needs to keep in mind the prof they have against Tyrion and not just a theory.
Robb: As my brother, I ask you not to question my authority again.
Robb left the room leaving Kenway to his own thoughts as he pondered on what a strange few months this has been already...
