Chapter 36: It's All Crumbling!

=========================

Kenway's alone in the Godswood, if he can't get what he needs from his ancestors, then maybe the Gods can help him, however that never happened, all he could do was remember his father sitting in front of the Weirwood tree, sharpening Ice, he was either sharpening it or cleaning it, point is, his father would spend a lot of time here, just him the large sword and his thoughts.

Kenway: Not many people can sneak up on me.

Kenway turned on the spot, knocking himself out of his own thoughts to see his youngest sister, Arya, it's been literal years since he last saw her, the last time was when they spilt at the fork, Kenway heading to the Wall and Arya going to Kings Landing.

Arya: Not many can survive a spear through the heart.

Kenway fully turned to her and wanted to smile but this is more her speed, she's not like Sansa, Arya has the looks of their mother but spirit of their father, she's gotten taller as well, more confident, she's different from the little girl who left Winterfell all those years ago, only so has Kenway.

Kenway: I didn't.

Arya was the first to smile and ran to her now oldest brother, jumping into him and hugging him, Kenway obviously caught her and hugged back while he thought this was how Sansa would have reacted to him being back, not Arya, maybe he doesn't know his sister's as much as he thought, Kenway held her in place for a little while longer before dropping her back into the snow, taking her face in his hands, her smile made him smile.

Kenway: Is that it? The one Jon made you?

Arya nodded and took her sword out for it's sheathe, she seemed really proud of it and held it out to Kenway like it was made of glass, Kenway appreciated that, you have to treat your sword with respect or it won't look after you.

Arya: Needle.

Kenway took the sword in his right hand before looking up to her with a small chuckle, it was a fitting name for the sword, a little like Cold Breath, he only called it that because of the small light blue gem stone in the hilt, the smile slowly faded from his face though when a question came to his mind, one he didn't want to know the answer to.

Kenway: Have you ever used it?

Kenway didn't look away from the well maintained sword, he didn't want to picture his little sister having to kill people to survive, he promised to keep her safe but he failed, he didn't keep any of them safe, now he has another chance while Arya answered his question.

Arya: Once or twice.

Kenway looked up to her, well, down to her but lifted his head from looking at needle to her, she took her sword back sliding it into it's sheathe as she didn't look too sad about having to use it, she didn't look pleased though either which made Kenway feel a little better about the fact.

Kenway: I'm sorry. You shouldn't have had too.

Arya gave him a sad smile remembering that Kenway was supposed to have gone with them all those years ago now, imagine what he could have done then, maybe he could have saved their father, maybe Arya wouldn't have had to be alone, or maybe he would be dead too, all things to think about, before he could thing about it too much, he saw the way she was looking at his sword so with a small smile, drew Cold Breath from his left hip and held it sideways to her.

Arya: I always loved this sword. Valyrian Steel.

Kenway smiled to her while she held Cold Breath, memories of times before flashed through Kenway's mind, him walking into the armory and seeing her trying to pick the sword up, it was adorable and made him slightly proud, now Kenway knows that this sword was made for him, for a purpose, one that he can't fail at.

Kenway: Jealous?

Kenway asked with a scoff as she returned the gesture still admiring his sword, it was a little funny watching her hold it because the sword is nearly bigger then her, but he took it back careful not to cut her or anything, he's recently sharpened it, can't guarantee when the Night King will get here, he needs to be ready.

Arya: Too heavy for me.

Kenway slide Cold Breath back into it's sheathe on the side of his hip before looking back to her, he can't believe he has all his family back here in Winterfell, minus, Robb, his mother and father, but the rest of them is a win, there was nothing he could do about them.

Kenway: Where were you earlier. I could have used your help with Sansa.

Arya seems to be a little more kinda towards Daenerys then Sansa is, Kenway's not sure what it is that Sansa doesn't like about her, maybe it's because she's now Queen of Westeros and Sansa was supposed to be, Kenway doesn't know, all he does know is it needs to stop.

Arya: She doesn't like your Queen, does she?

Kenway sighed a little annoyed by it, he's a man that likes to keep control of things, to make sure things go his way, Sansa meeting Deanerys isn't going his way, not to the extent he wants it too anyway.

Arya: Look at you. You never wanted a crown, now your married to a Queen with a son...

Kenway smiled as he sat on the rock their father has so many times before them, Arya walked towards him and sat on the small rock where he used to rest his foot while servicing Ice, Kenway smiled to the memory of Aemon, he loves that boy and will do anything that he can to make sure there is a world for him to run around in after.

Arya: ... I remember you used to say "I'd rather bed a Targaryen", to things you don't want to do.

Kenway's smile wiped from his face as he remembered that saying, the one he remembers the most is when he was asked to marry the Lannister girl, Myrcella, his father gave him the choice though, Kenway had no intention of accepting that, he was disappointed to hear about her death, she seemed like a good girl.

Arya: Maybe you were right. Maybe you did die from that spear.

Kenway looked to her as she walked away from him, leaving him once again in his own mind with the Godswood around him, he never once denied that, he never once tried to go back to who he once was but then something came to mind.

Kenway: Thank you.

Kenway smiled with a chuckle, that's how he's going to beat the Night King, not as the King he is right now, but as the teenager he used to be, the Black Wolf can't beat the Night King but maybe Kenway Stark can, maybe he can't look at this as a commander or even a king, maybe someone who reads books and scrolls can.

Kenway: Enjoy your lunch?

Kenway asked as Midnight joined him, fresh blood dripping from her jaw, he called her towards him as he scooped some of the water into his hand and washed it away, when he went for some more water, he noticed something in the reflection, it was his face, corpse like, rotting, eyes, sharp blue and staring at him, Kenway ignored it and continued to clean his best friend...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kenway is standing outside the castle walls helping as best he can build the catapults they'll use against the Army of Dead, throw a few fireballs into the crowd that should weaken the numbers a little, he couldn't help but smile when he was joined by the love of his life and Aemon.
Kenway: Don't go too far.
Daenerys smiled to him as they watched Aemon, Midnight and Rickon run off amongst the workers, he wanted him to stay close because of the tools and other dangerous equipment lying around, he would stop him from going out in general but the whole of Winterfell is like that.
Daenerys: Your sister doesn't like me.
That left Kenway and his queen to take a small stroll together, they haven't been able to spend so much time together, only really sharing the same bed, Kenway's been busy around the clock, no off time, they can't even get married in the Godswood like Kenway wanted for them.
Kenway: It's because she doesn't know you. If it makes you feel any better...
Kenway stopped them from walking, her hand in his turning to face her, smiling down to her as she looked up to him a small grin on her lips too, he took her last free hand in his holding both her hands in his trying to keep her as warm as he possibly can.
Kenway: ...  I'm not even sure she likes me anymore.
That clearly didn't help if anything that might have just made things a little more worse for the situation because Daenerys let go of his hands and stepped a little closure to him.
Daenerys: She doesn't need to be my friend, but I am her Queen. If she can't respect me...
A Dothraki call got her attention and drew her away from him, Kenway stood there with a sigh, how's he supposed to keep the peace between them, he has to run a kingdom, plan a war and now keep his sister and wife apart.
Kenway: Should've stayed in the ocean.
Kenway mumbled to himself before walking away, she went to go see her dragons or something, Kenway's not a big fan of them, sure their cool and they don't want to eat him but that just means he doesn't want to push his luck.
Aemon: I can't do it.
Kenway is standing beside Ser Davos, Jorah Mormont and Jon as Aemon is where Bran stood all those years ago, shooting arrows at the very same target that Arya showed him up at, Kenway smiled to the memories as he looked to Jon to see him smirking as well.
Kenway: You can.
Kenway walked over to his son, dropping to his knee and moving his arms into a better position, Kenway guided him, relaxed the boys arms and noticed him clutch his eyes, Kenway tickled him making the boy laugh and open his eyes.
Kenway: Don't close your eyes. Relax your bow arm and breath, slow, deep breaths. Don't hold them in.
Aemon did everything his father told him, Sansa, Arya, Deanerys all watching, sure from different parts of the castle but still watching nonetheless, Kenway slowly let go of Aemon and waited beside him, the boy took his time, till he let loose and hit the target, not in the centre but it was still something to celebrate, which they did, Kenway lifted the boy in his arms while the others clapped with a little cheer, Kenway then noticed Jon get dragged off by Sam Tarly he's not sure what that's about but left it alone for now, he was too proud of his son...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kenway got a message to meet Jon in the crypts so he did, just him, no one else, Kenway walked down there and saw Jon looking at Lyanna, their aunt, Kenway was confused as to why he's looking there but stood by him now both of them looking.

Kenway: Do you think she's as beautiful as father said?

Jon didn't answer him, didn't even turn his head, Kenway was curious is something was wrong but all Jon could do was kick at the dirt under their feet, Kenway just sighed and was about to say something else but stopped when Jon was the one to break the silence.

Jon: Did you know?

Kenway wasn't sure what's going on, he could only just chuckle a little while looking at Jon, Jon wasn't in a laughing mood and turned to Kenway, having to look up at the younger of the two but he still looked pissed about something, so since Kenway had no idea what Jon was talking, he asked him again.

Jon: Cut the shit Kenway. Did you know?

Kenway turned to Jon and let out a small breath, he did know, he knew, it was in the prophecy that Jon would get in the way of Daenerys reign, make things more difficult, so to keep his promise, he changed the future.

Kenway: Now is not the time for...

Kenway didn't wan't to talk about this now, it's not the time for it so he turned to walk away only stopping when Jon called to him, Jon's never really one for raising his voice so Kenway stopped, still not turning back around though.

Jon: Don't walk away from me! Tell me now. Did. You. Know?

Kenway looked down to the dirt as he thought about it, when he first legitimised him as Ned Starks son, no, no he didn't know but as soon as he found out he was glad he did, Jon doesn't want the throne anyway so where's the harm in it.

Kenway: Would it make a difference if I did?

Kenway asked over his shoulder, Jon got the answer he wanted, if Kenway didn't know then Kenway would tell him, not avoid the answer, Jon let out a batted breath running his hand down his face as Kenway turned to him.

Kenway: It was for your own...

Kenway tried to explain as Jon walked towards him and punched him across the face, Kenway only turned his head in the direction of the punch, Kenway sighed while Jon was clearly angered by this, Kenway turned his head back towards Jon as Jon put everything he had in that punch.

Jon: I never wanted a throne. Just to belong, to know who I am. You called me your brother but kept this from me...

Kenway just looked at him, Peter's body gone from Midnights clean up service, he's impressed that no one seems to see that he's actually gone right now, however right in front of him isn't an angry Jon but a betrayed one, Kenway did love this man but he was and always seems to be stuck between a rock and a even bigger rock.

Jon: ... Maybe you were right. Kenway Stark did die. I have no idea who you are now.

Jon pushed past Kenway making him turn his body, still not looking away from the depths of the crypt, Jon's footsteps leading towards the exit, Kenway stayed though just being looked down on by these piles of stone, he's never noticed how much taller they are compared to him till now, Kenway turned on his heels and walked out of that place, out of the crypts and into the Godswood, apparently he still has a lot of thinking to do...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daenerys can't find Kenway anywhere, or Aemon for that matter, she assumed they were both off doing their own thing, Kenway's been a little more distant lately and Aemon loves running around with Rickon and the other kids, it's nice to see him with others his own age for a change.
Daenerys found her way to the library of Winterfell where Kenway has spent so much time in his younger years, reading and learning, Daenerys however wasn't looking for Kenway, she was looking for his sister, Sansa who's sitting at the centre table talking to Ser Royce of the Vale.
Royce: The moment we can get the last infantryman out onto the field, we should shut the gates.
Daenerys watched for a second as they spoke about the main gates to Winterfell, Kenway's plan has been put into action, it's either pure genius or completely stupid, they'll find out when the time comes.
Sansa: Keep them open for as long as you can. There are still people coming in from the countryside.
Sansa handed a scroll to Royce while Daenerys' presents caught their attention, Sansa stood up pretty quickly while Royce followed her actions, neither said anything till it was Daenerys who made the request.
Daenerys: Lady Sansa, I was hoping we could speak alone.
Sansa gave Royce a small nod making him bow a little to her, he then walked towards Daenerys and gave another bow, only it was a little more stiff then the one Sansa got, the north are clearly not comfortable yet with having a Targaryen in their world.
Daenerys: I was hoping we could have a little talk about the things we have in common.
Daenerys was asked by Jorah Mormont to build a bridge with Sansa, to lighten the load on Kenway's shoulders, no one can possibly understand what he's going through right now, Daenerys never thought of it like that and he has a point so she set out to find Sansa.
Daenerys: We've both known what it means to lead people who aren't inclined to accept a woman's rule. And we've done a damn good job or it, from what I can tell.
Daenerys gave a small smile to Sansa and watched as she grew one as well, Daenerys is hoping to sort this out, they have a lot in common, as stated before and the love for Kenway, even if he's being weird lately.
Daenerys: And yet, I can't help but feel we're at odds with one another. Why is that?
Daenerys waited for an answer but all Sansa did do was take a deep breath, opened her mouth a little to answer but then closed it, not going to, Daenerys however didn't need to ask again, she already pretty much knew the answer.
Daenerys: Your brother.
Daenerys said as more of a statement then question, Sansa could see that and didn't see the point in deny it, instead she could see that she's trying to make something here and might as well try as well.
Sansa: He loves you, you know that.
It was a pretty obvious statement, they have a son together and are married, you wouldn't do that unless you loved that person, Daenerys however was trying to piece things together.
Daenerys: That bothers you?
Daenerys had thought it was that but never actually had the chance to confirm it, Sansa also never denied it while the two sat close to each other still in the library.
Sansa: Men do stupid things for women. They're easily manipulated.
Daenerys felt a little annoyed by that, she wouldn't marry Kenway to just manipulate him, plus it's Kenway, he'd have figured that out way before this moment and would have probably stormed King's Landing on his own, it was technically him that took the Red Keep while Daenerys kept Cersei distracted.
Daenerys: All my life, I've known one goal: the Iron Throne. Taking it back from the people who destroyed my family, and almost destroyed yours. Kenway has done both of those things. I am now Queen and your family is back here. Safe. There isn't anything I can do to repay Kenny for what he's done for me. He's shown me what it's like to love again as well as giving me something I was told, is impossible. I promise, I'm not your enemy.
Sansa smirked a little with a chuckle, she never saw it like that, she just saw that Kenway changed when he came back from Meereen and assumed it was because of her, hearing her say that made her feel a little better about all this.
Sansa: I should have thanked you the moment you arrived. That was a mistake.
Sansa rested her hands on the table top where Daenerys was able to rest her's a top, Sansa looked down to the connection and wasn't sure about it but let it be while Daenerys continued to speak her heart.
Daenerys: I'm here because I love your brother, and I trust him. And I know he's true to his word. He's only the second man in my life I can say that about.
Sansa listened to every word she said as she started to think she was wrong about Daenerys, maybe Kenway too, she might have been a bit too hard on him, especially the young Aemon, he's done nothing to warrant her cold shoulder.
Sansa: Who was the first?
She asked on pure curiosity on who took her heart before her brother did, she didn't need to know about Daario, although Daenerys has had trouble remembering him as well, not in a bad way but like a ship you admired sunk to the bottom of the ocean, you know where it is and don't want to dig up old history.
Daenerys: Someone taller.
It wasn't Daario because Kenway is bigger then him in most ways, She was of course talking about Drogo, the man she named her favorite Dragon after, the two of them shared a laugh while Kenway is sitting in the Godswood alone, the end is fast approaching and he's not sure he's ready for it...
