Chapter One

"We're getting a divorce."

Fifteen year old me looked up at my parents, not in shock, but in complete numbness. I had seen it coming, as had my two older siblings.

"We're going to share custody, so you'll be staying with me during the week, and with your father on the weekend," my mom said. Her eyes were red from crying.

I stared at them. I felt angry, but I couldn't bring it to the surface. Why on earth wouldn't they try harder? Love wasn't easy. It was like they just gave up on trying and let their relationship go down the drain.

I told myself, in that moment, that wouldn't happen to me.

"Are you going to be okay, Jane?" My dad asked. He stood a tad farther away from my mom, arms crossed.

"I'll be fine," I said, pushing my true thoughts down.

What else could I be? If I brought up my irritations, they'd just get upset.

I stood and walked away from the dining room table and up to my room.

"Jane?"

I snapped out of my trance and looked up to see Hongseok standing on the opposite side of the kitchen island. I gave him a small smile.

"Hey Hongseok."

"You were off in la la land," Hongseok said, making his way to the pantry. "Anything you want to talk about before we start this movie?"

I shook my head. "I'm okay Hongseok. Thank you."

He grabbed a microwavable bag of popcorn. "Well, in that case, do you wanna watch the movie with us?"

I nodded, smiling. "I'd love to."

Hongseok smiled back before putting the popcorn in the microwave.

The dynamic in the house was different. A good different. The guys could roam freely, but for right now, they had on ankle bracelets, meaning they can't leave the house. They were to have these for the first few months, then they would be able to take them off and go out, supervised of course.

They were able to connect and talk with one another, which made the environment much better for them. After two years of isolation, they were always around each other, talking, playing games, watching movies. It felt like I was rooming with eight guys, which... I mean... I was, but it just felt so much better.

It had been about a week or so since we moved in.

Hyojong and Yanan came over to visit a few times already. Some of the members really took to them and didn't seem upset at all and others, despite the talk at the hospital, were more distant.

I stood and made my way to the living room.

Hui and Kino were in the living room when I joined them, Kino in his own chair, and Hui on the couch. Kino's eyes lit up when he saw me.

Damn, he was so sweet.

"Are you watching the movie with us, Jane?" Kino asked hopefully. He was wrapped in a big blanket and cross legged on the chair. He looked so small and innocent it made me want to cry.

"Yes, I am," I replied, laughing softly. Hui patted the spot next to him and, after a moment of hesitation, I took it.

No one knew about what had happened between Hui and I.

In the one week we'd been there, nothing much has happened, but he has kissed me a few times whenever he got the chance. The most important thing to me right now was Hui opening up and healing, but when he walked around, looking like his beautiful self, it was hard not to steal a kiss here and there.

Yuto entered the room, but only to cut into the kitchen. He was still on his crutches, and, because the gov had begun giving them all real medication, his legs were feeling a bit better. Hui turned around. "Ah, Yuto, do you wanna watch this movie with us?"

"What is it?"

Hui checked the box. "It. Like, the movie It."

"Is it a scary movie?" Yuto asked nervously.

"I believe so."

"I'll pass," he muttered, making his way into the kitchen. Hongseok was pouring the popcorn into a bowl.

"Hey! I'm a wuss too!" Hui protested. "And we've missed a lot! Don't you wanna see what we didn't get to experience?"

"I've never liked horror movies, hyung."

"Aish," Hui sighed. "Fine."

I looked at Hui and smiled.

"Okay, let's do this thing!" Hongseok said excitedly.

"Oh boy..." Hui muttered. He was nervous.

"You just... don't like horror movies?" I asked him.

"I'm kind of scared of them," he said, laughing softly.

"If you get scared, just hide behind Jane," Hongseok joked, throwing a piece of popcorn in the air and catching it with his mouth.

"With pleasure," Hui replied, grinning.

My cheeks burned a little, but Hongseok didn't seem to notice. He just chuckled at what Hui said and continued eating.

"Let's go!" Kino said excitedly. He grabbed the remote and pushed play.

************

Everything seemed really great. I was to have sessions with them often, but there was no fixed schedule when we got the house. I met with two a day for an hour, and the rest of the day, if anyone wanted to talk to me, it was open.

One good thing about these sessions were they were completely private. There was a room in the house where we could go and close the door and talk, which everyone appreciated. At the Institution, everything they said was monitored.

Speaking of.

The Institution had now become a crime scene of sorts. Park had been right; the NIS got involved and was leading a full fledged investigation.

He even warned me that there was going to be a trial.

The HM, based on our story, the camera evidence, and the placebo, was going to be arrested for abuse of the guys. The only reason he hadn't yet was he was still recovering from the two bullet wounds.

Yeah... we weren't exactly in the clear.

We made some mistakes.

One, the chloroform. You aren't really supposed to use that on people. That means they were weighing whether or not Dawn and I should get in trouble. That was scary as hell.

Two, Wooseok.

There were two ways the argument could go. He shot the HM in self defense, or he shot the HM while he was unable to fight back. We were all a bit nervous over what was going to happen to him. On top of that, he threatened the nurses, who were also all arrested for assisting the abuse.

Right now it was just extremely complicated.

I sat on my bed, zoned out, barely noticing when someone walked into my room and shut the door. I blinked and looked up. Hui.

"Hey..." he said, sitting down on my left.

"Hey."

"You okay?" He asked as he scratched the back of his head.

I nodded. "Yes, I'm okay."

He nodded too. "Good..."

After a moment he put an arm across my shoulders. I leaned into him and sighed. "You know they're most likely gonna have you all testify, right?"

"I know," Hui agreed.

"And they'll want you to talk about what happened."

"I know."

I took a deep breath. "Even I don't know what happened to you guys at night. I mean I do, but not from your perspective."

"I will get around to telling you, okay? But for right now, I'm just enjoying not being tortured."

I hugged him tightly. "I'm so sorry all of that happened to you. I understand if you blame me for not getting you out of there sooner-"

"What?" He pulled away slightly and looked at me in confusion. "Jane, of course I don't blame you! You're the one who got us out of there!"

"I know, but I could have been faster-"

He put a finger to my lips. "No. Stop blaming yourself. Look where we are now. You did it, and no one is mad that it wasn't immediately after you found out."

I looked at him, but didn't know what to say.

He moved his finger and smiled. "I haven't felt this great in 6 years. Because of you. Does that make you feel better?"

I laughed softly and a little awkwardly. "It does Hui, thank you."

"And I can see Kino is getting more comfortable around us. We can't touch him, but he isn't flinching or shying away from us when we are close. And Shinwon seems to be scratching less too. We're getting better!"

I smiled. "That's all I want."

"You're so sweet," he groaned. I hugged him again.

"Don't sound so upset about that," I told him jokingly.

"Believe me, I'm not." He gave me a quick peck on the cheek. "You need to get some sleep. It's midnight."

"Well so do you," I said. Hui grinned and stood up.

"I know, I'm going I'm going." He looked down at me and smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow Jane."

"Bye Hui."

He bent down and gave me a quick kiss on the lips. I smiled, so he gave me one more before leaving my room.

Before I went to bed, I checked to make sure everyone was in their room. They all were, but when I checked on Wooseok, he said: "Hey Jane?"

I stopped. "Yes?"

"Can I talk to you for a minute?"

I walked in as he turned on the lamp on his bedside table.

"Of course, what's up?" I sat on the end of his bed, smiling.

He seemed nervous, on edge. "I just... I'm scared."

"Oh no... what's wrong?" I asked nervously.

"I just don't want to go to jail," he said. He immediately started crying. I crawled forward and grabbed his hand.

"I'll make sure that doesn't happen, okay?"

"I-I shouldn't have done it," he stuttered as he cried. "I should have just left him alone!"

I squeezed his hand tightly. "He's a horrible person, and you were angry. You have been hurt by him for so long!"

"I still... now I'm possibly getting locked back up. I can't do that. I just can't!"

He hugged me and sobbed.

I hugged back tightly. I couldn't let them put him in jail. He'd already lost such a big chunk of his life, and if he went to jail... I would never forgive myself. I'd fight like hell to get him out.

This certainly wasn't helping his mental state.

"Do you want me to stay up with you, Wooseok?" I asked.

"You don't have to... I'm just stressed."

"I understand. It's going to be okay. Tomorrow is Monday. Park is coming by to give us an update. We'll see tomorrow, okay?"

Wooseok wiped his eyes. "Thank you... for everything. I'll try and sleep..."

"Are you sure you're okay? I don't want you to..." I trailed off.

"To hurt myself?"

"Yeah..." I sighed.

"I-I'll be okay. I promise." Wooseok forced a smile.

I gave him a quick hug. "If you start feeling bad, don't hesitate to come wake me up, okay?"

"Okay Jane, thank you."

I left Wooseok's room sadly.

I wasn't tired anymore.
