Chapter 9
"Plonker"
♢ ♢
"So, they what?" Draco asked me as his head rested in his hand, and his elbow propped up his whole arm. He was clearly uninterested and not paying full attention and so I sighed.
"Look, read" I pointed to the old textbook that was sourcing our information.
He leaned forward and 'read' the textbook.
"You're so bossy, you know that?" He looked at me as I moved the textbook away from him and started writing. I ignored him and carried on scribbling stuff down.
I finally spoke up, "I'm not bossy, you just frustrate me, you plonker" I spoke quietly as we were in the library but a chuckle escaped.
"Plonker?" He tried to suppress the laugh that was approaching.
With a straight face, I replied. "Yeah. Plonker"
We stayed in silence a few moments before we both simultaneously looked up. Our eyes met, and before we could stop it, we both broke out laughing...
When we had composed ourselves and the giggling had died down, I spoke, "You can use that if you want" I smiled.
"Plonker? I think I might" He laughed. This was the first time I'd seen Draco fully relaxed and laughing. "Where did you ever here that word?" He asked and I spent a few minutes explaining the story of my step father yelling plonker at some wizard in the ministry, for 10 minutes. It was, of course, a muggle word that he had picked up, but he used it to insult the poor fellow none the less.
All the while, Draco stared at me intently, listening to me and laughing at all the right moments...until someone disturbed us.
Cedric's head popped out from around one of the shelves, smiling at me. "Hey Oli"
"Hey" I chimed.
"What you doing?" He asked slowly, eyeing Draco.
"We're doing some history of magic homework. Figured it'd be better to get it done now, rather than later" I smiled innocently.
"Yeah, professor Binns is awful for homework tasks, who picked the pairs?" Cedric decided to stay stood up, leaning against the selves.
"He did, if you must know, Diggory" Draco spat. Cedric seemed to take some sort of offense to this and took a step back in surrender. I rolled my eyes and spoke,
"Hey did, Ced" Cedric smiled at me and nodded before waving at me.
"Anyways, I'll see you later, Oli" Cedric smiled and nodded, turning around and wandering off with the small book, most likely for the next task.
"Plonker" Draco sneered as Cedric left view. I scoffed and rolled my eye, in annoyance. He was smirking and I wasn't sure whether it was because of his lexical choice or because he was insulting Cedric. Either way, I stood up and put my quill away, walking out.
As I walked down the hall, I passed just a few students as it was late night and nearly curfew. It made me wonder why Cedric was heading to the library so late.
"Oli....OLI" Draco called behind me which caused me to stop and spin around.
"It's Olivia to you" I spat. My words were venomous and I regretted them.
"Alright, sorry...Sorry" He apologized softly.
I sighed, "Sorry. What do you want?"
"I'm sorry if I offended you" He spoke.
"What do you gain from being the schools bully? The hard to get?.." I asked, trying to understand Draco.
Draco was raised with a merciless father -Lucius Malfoy- Someone who, isn't renowned for being kind, and that has obviously rubbed off on Draco.
"...Nothing...But..Never mind.." He stuttered.
My eye's softened. "Nothing, you gain nothing. So why carry on?" I asked, turning and heading away.
"Oli-Olivia" He quickly corrected himself, but I still ignored it until he grabbed my wrist, spinning me to face him.
He sighed, letting go of my wrist as he spoke, "I'm sorry..I was enjoying our conversation and he...-"
"-He interrupted? He was just popping over to say hello, Draco" My voice was quiet. "He's like my family, and you just continuously insult him...to my face. Unlike you, Draco, I don't have any family anymore, okay? So when someone constantly talks about the only person that feels like family, it wears me down..." My eyes filled with water as Draco looked at me.
The corridor was now empty and it was just me and Draco. Tears fell down my cheeks as I began to weep. He looked at me with no emotion but soft eyes.
He put his hand on my shoulder as I sobbed and slowly, he pulled me into his chest and was whispering in my ear.
"I'm sorry about what happened to your family, I'm sorry. I guess I didn't realize what it was doing to you..." He admitted softly.
I looked up at him. "What are you doing, Malfoy? It's your fathers fault Silus is dead!"
Draco looked down. "I know..I'm sorry"
My eyes went wide as my tears continued to fall. "Wait? It was?" Draco nodded slowly.
"My father told someone that you were still hanging out with the Diggory's and they made him kill Silus...My father didn't actually commit the act but, he might as well have done."
"Voldemort ordered it...Didn't he?" I whispered.
Draco nodded, his arm was still around me as he looked at the ground, refusing to look at me.
Why was Voldemort involved with Silus?
We stayed silent for 5 minutes before Draco looked up and around, seeing how dark it was.
"It has to be well past curfew, you should go back to your common room, I can walk you there if you want..?" I lifted my head and nodded.
"Thank you" I smiled gently at him.
"My pleasure" He chuckled. And with that we walked down endless corridors, until we reached the Gryffindor common room.
"Thank you, though, you didn't have to" I smiled. The tears had evaporated from my cheeks and eyes and I was now feeling better, and calmer.
"Are you okay now?" He asked politely and formally as he stood in front of me.
"I'm fine.." I laughed a little, still smiling at me. "Why are you so formal? You plonker" I chuckled.
He shrugged. "Guess it was the way I was raised...." He answered nervously, quietly.
"You should go before you get in trouble..." I suggested.
"Oh, yeah.....When do you want to meet again?" He asked.
"Oh, erm.....Well, the first task is soon and....I don't know what's going to happen so....I'll speak to you after, yeah?" I informed. He nodded slowly.
"Yeah, course...I'll see you then..." He smiled gently before walking away.
I hesitated before raising my hand, calling back to Draco. "Draco...If you get in trouble, I'm sorry..." He turned around to look at me for a second before he answered.
"It's alright..." He replied before walking back down the corridor.
I entered the password to the common room and entered. The heat of the fire surging towards me and wrapping itself around my body. Seamus and Dean sat on the sofa, chuckling about something.
They turned to look at me as I walked in, a small smile on my face. "Hey" I managed to mumble before yawning.
"Where the bloody Hell have you been?" His Irish accent prominent and laced around his tongue.
"Doing the history of magical creatures homework" I informed him. I yawned once more, stretching as I did so, "Anyway, I'm tired. See you".
Slowly, I sauntered upstairs and into the girls dorm. When I got in I threw my stuff down, took my jumper and tie off, unbuttoned my shirt and got straight into bed, I was tired. It had been a real long day. I pulled the gentle and infamous Gryffindor covers over me and rested my head down on my feather filled cushion and soon enough, I was drifting off to sleep. One that couldn't have ended sooner...
I was thrown into the dark, no light, no wand. Just me, spinning around endlessly as voices called to me.
"You're a disgrace!" A man yelled. His face was covered and his voice was unknown. I searched for the owner of the voice but all I could hear was his harsh words, burning into my skin.
"I wish you were never born!" The dark figure called. Confusion flooded my core as sharp pain slithered up my arm.
Carefully, I pulled up my sleeve and revealed the damage that was being done. Their words were being engraved into my skin, my blood evaporating immediately, revealing the full effect of their words.
"You're stupid!" Another male called, he was younger, much younger and as he stepped into the small light which was focused on me, I saw Draco's face emerge, full of hate and spite.
"I hate you, I don't like you, no one does!" Another male voice shouted. It was Cedric's calming voice, but this time, it was full of rage. Rage I had only seen from him once before.
The chanting continued and so did the pain up my arm. Their words continuously being etched into me until it all stopped. Their words, the pain, everything stopped and one voice spoke.
It was wise and calm, but also raspy and harsh, it felt familiar to me, yet, I couldn't remember anyone with a voice of such. It felt as if they were trying to touch me as they called out to me.
"You are strong, you are brave, and you are smart, your birth was great. Not only to others, but to me..." Their voice dragged on slightly, as if they were struggling for breath.
"And as your father, I am here to support you whenever you feel lonely. Trust Snape, he will guide you on the right path...." His raspy voice started to drown the others out and they got quieter and the engraving on my arm slowly faded and healed. Once I looked up, every figure was gone and the light above me went out.
