Chapter 1
Lots of humans believe that there are only the normal animals that roam their planet. From the graceful bird to the slithering snake they thought they knew them all. But they were wrong. In the many areas that were unused by humans there used to be small colony's of strange creatures no human has ever witnessed. These creatures were called Bathergons they all had the strong bodies and heads of a panther, the large wings of a bat and the claws and the ability to breath fire of a dragon. Each Bathergon had specific powers upon birth and these would vary depending on different situations. However, others would be gifted with two gifts these usually happened on rare chances and if they were seen they would be treated as a great gift. But where some saw these gifts as a blessing to be praised and admired others would see these gifts as a way to gain power.
Many years ago there was a large number of Bathergon colony's but now there was only one. The other colony's were wiped out by a ruthless force that the others were unsure what it was the last colony stood strong with all type's of Bathergons there was young and elderly living in the colony and everyone of them worked to help each other. That was how life was like for many years until one fateful night. As the moon rose storm clouds rolled in making rain fall down on the small colony where many of the Bathergon's had taken shelter in their cave homes. Something felt off, a strange scent in the air made all the elders worried for the young-lings and one in particular. As the eldest, and the leader, made a headcount for the night they turned to their second in command.
"Wait where's Springblossom?" He asked worriedly. Outside a small Bathergon cub was walking back to the cave ready to sleep with it's mother telling it a bedtime story. However, as it got closer to the cave it stopped suddenly when it heard a deep growling from the thick trees. As they slowly turned to the trees they started to shake in terror as two blood red eyes pierced from the darkness staring down at the child. The last thing the Bathergon cub saw was a shadowed figure jumping at it. The Bathergon's inside the cave heard a small scream before silence the mother of the cub walked forward before being stopped by the leader. The mother pushed past the leader exiting the cave looking around.
"S-Springblossom? Sweetheart? It's mummy, you can come out." Silence. A small figure was thrown in the Bathergon's direction and in front of the mother lay her cub motionless with blood pooling from it's throat. The mother screamed in terror as she fell to the floor mourning her loss. The leader of the group looked to his strongest fighters giving them a serious look.
"Okay, fighters follow me we will end this evil force here and now! The rest of you evacuate the village!" Despite everyone shaking from fear the fighters nuzzled their mates and their children before walking up to their leader. The leader turned to the still grieving mother. "Puddle I'm so sorry but you have to leave now" the leader tried to pull her away with his wing but she slashed at him.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!" She snapped making him flinch backwards from the grieving mother. She sobbed heavily hovering over her babies lifeless body. The leader sighed seeing all of the others evacuating when one of the fighters walked up to him.
"Sir, what about, you know...?" The leader's eyes widened in realisation.
"We don't have to time to go that way by the time we get there whatever is out there could of killed us all"
"I'll go" The leader spun around to see the mother standing up.
"No, I will not let you risk your life" the mother glared at him.
"Look, my mate died from starvation, my baby girl has been mauled by whatever is out there. I have nothing left. Just let me do this" More tears fell down her face the Leader walked up to her and pressed his forehead against her's.
"Try and be safe" Puddle nodded before running away. As Puddle disappeared a low growl could be heard surrounding the Leader and the fighters. "Show yourself, monster!" As silence fell the fighters slowly let their guard down when one of them was grabbed from the darkness making him scream in terror, which turned into painful screams. One by one each of the fighters was taken by this unknown force when the Leader was all alone. He took a deep breath knowing this was his finale one when a pair of blood red eyes shone against his.
As Puddle ran through her village the sound of the Leader's painful scream made her run faster. She finally got into the cave on the furthest away from the village. As she entered she walked closer to a tree that grew in the middle of the cave it's branches reaching out of a hole in the ceiling. As Puddle reached the tree she extended her claw and traced a pattern that was carved into the tree. As she completed the pattern a panel moved from the side of the tree opening up to reveal a small baby Bathergon. The baby, which was a girl, was small even for a baby however, she had bright white fur with blue patches with electric blue eyes. This was one of the rare birthed Bathergons. Puddle smiled kindly at the baby tears pricking at her eyes as she remembered Springblossom. She wiped her eyes before leaning down and licking the babies head calming the waking baby.
"Shhh, don't worry your going to be just fine" Puddle then leaned down and bite the babies scruff lifting them up and ran outside and smelled the air the scent of blood hit her first. Pushing past that she found the scent of other Bathergons. As soon as she knew where they where she ran in there direction. However, just as she thought herself and the baby were home free a black figure leaped in front of her making her sink her claws into the ground to slow herself to a stop. The figure steped into the moonlight making Puddle step back in fear. The figure turned out to be a male Bathergon. He had tar black fur with blood red strips across his face with blood red eyes that shone like a pair of rubys. Some would think this male Bathergon was attractive if it wasn't for the fact that just like the baby that Puddle was holding was rare he was just as rare. But he had used his powers to harm others making him a force to be feared.
"You thought you could hide the child from me? I will allow you to live if you just hand the child over to me" Puddle glared and stood her ground. "Just know this there are no others. There is not one other Bathergon to help you. I am your only salvation from death" Despite the fear setting into she just placed the baby down and stood over her and extender her claws growling. "So be it". The male Bathergon growled before pouncing slashing at her she kept her body over the baby despite getting multiple cuts and bites staining her fur and he blood dripping onto the baby underneath her. As another slash hit her she knew she had to get the baby out of here. Using perfect timing she quickly threw some wet mud into the Bathergon attacker and whilst he was wiping it away she used his distraction to slash across his eyes making him shriek in pain as blood splattered the wet muddy ground. Puddle quickly grabbed the baby her wounds screaming for her to stop and sleep. She kept on running before her wounds were to much she laid down on the ground resting the baby in the area between her paws resting her head trying to not close her eyes. As her vision began to blur a figure walked in front of her. Without smelling she knew that the figure was not the male Bathergon as they were smaller and much thinner. The figure walked forward to Puddle and placed their hand on her head. Knowing she didn't have enough time Puddle gently pushed the baby towards the figure sensing this figure had a good heart. As the figure gently picked up the baby Puddle closed her eyes and went limp.
The figure walked away from the strange creature they had found stumbling out of the woods. They carried the baby creature out of the woods and walked towards a small farm. As they entered the farm the lights from the farm house hit them. The figure turned out to be a male human. He wore denim overalls with a red checkered shirt underneath but had a rainproof jacket on due to the heavy rainfall. As he entered the house a women walked up to him.
"So, what was out there?" The woman slightly jumped seeing the creature in the man's arms.
"I'm not to sure but it's dead. Looks like it was attacked by something but it left its cub to us."
"aw it's cute. Can we keep it?" Both adults turned around to see three small children at the top of the stairs looking down. There was a boy who was the eldest a girl who was the middle child and another boy who was the youngest. The woman raised her eye brow at the three.
"Aren't you three meant to be in bed?" The eldest boy looked down to the two adults.
"Sorry Mum but we were worried about Dad going out at this time" The dad sighed but still smiled. "So are we keeping.... Whatever that is?" the dad looked down at the creature who was as big as a puppy but he knew it would grow to the size of a panther seeing how big the adult was. He seemed adamant but when the cub opened it's eyes he instantly felt like he had to help it.
"I don't see why not" this made the children cheer but the mum walked up to her husband.
"Where do you suggest we keep it?" The husband walked to the living room and grabbed a few pillows and threw them on the floor. He then gently placed the cub on the largest one making it instinctively curl into it.
"We'll keep here in the house for tonight she'll stay locked in the living room just to be safe then in the morning I'll find somewhere for a more permanent home" With that being the final word on the matter the husband ushered his family out of the room turning the light off and locking the door behind him. Unbeknown to the family the dark Bathergon loomed over the farm growling the cut still fresh across his now cloudy eye. He started moving forward just wanting to go in and killing the cub whilst she slept and the humans if they tried to stop him but he stopped himself.
"No, instead grow up little cub because I have a better death in store for you"
