Chapter 9: Bat Problem

After a few days of traveling, gathering herbs and berries, hunting and a bit of a bond forging between the two, they arrive at the base of Sapphire Peak.

Lariat: "We should take the eastern path, it leads straight to their village."

Owen: "What's down the other path?"

Lariat: "If my research is correct, it should be the Sapphire Mine. The source of all of the Dwarves income."

Owen: "The more you know..."

As the two begin climbing up the left path, something unnatural is going on in the Sapphire Mine...

Dwarven Leader: "And time for a break men!"

A large group of sixty dwarves are currently in a mining expedition and have been mining two hours straight.

58 Dwarves: "Thank you sir!"

As most of the heavily bearded dwarves sit down on some rock stools halfway into the mine, one young dwarf continues to work.

Young Dwarf: "(focused) Gotta keep going."

The leader puts his hand on the younger not yet bearded dwarf's shoulder.

Dwarven Leader: "You need to take a break every once in a while Thoris."

Thoris: "(focused) I can't take a break, not when there is still a goal that is within my grasp."

Dwarven Leader: "But pace yourself. We don't want someone as young and ambitious as you to collapse here."

The leader walks away to join the others.

Thoris: "(focused) There is a massive vein of gold and other minerals just waiting for me to tap into."

Meanwhile, Jex's orb begins to react.

Jex: "It appears that my power is reacting now."

Wosen: "The other two must be within the vicinity."

Lariat and Owen are able to see a village in the distance after an hour of walking up.

Lariat: "We're almost at Sapphire."

Owen: "(groaning) Thank you..."

Back in Sapphire Mine...

Dwarf 1: "The kid is still going!"

Thoris is determined to reach his goal.

Dwarf 2: "Well we should-"

A strange screech and wing flaps are heard coming from the entrance.

Dwarf 3: "What in the name of the gods does-"

Thousands of bats begin charging into the cave when it is only around noon.

Dwarven Leader: "Everyone evacu-"

Half of the dwarves get caught in the bats and are sent further down the mine.

Thoris: "(in head) No..."

The leader grabs Thoris just in time as he drags him outside.

Dwarf 1: "We need to report this to the three chiefs!"

They begin running down a path heading east, but Thoris is still sad.

Thoris: "(mumbling) I could see it."

The heroes are just about to enter Sapphire.

Lariat: "We're here Owen."

Owen lies down on the ground.

Owen: "(muffled) I can barely feel my legs."

A few Dwarves see Lariat and Owen.

Dwarf Woman: "An Elf and a Human?"

Lariat: "Don't worry, we're be in and out ASAP."

Owen begins to stand up again.

Owen: "(dizzy) Seems that they're more cautious than Elves."

Lariat: "But are more focused than a Human."

Owen: "Hey!"

They begin to walk towards an inn when they see thirty Dwarves enter town from a western entrance in a panic.

Lariat: "They must be from the mine, but why are they panicking?"

Twenty-nine remain behind as a slightly bigger dwarf rushes to a structure built into the mountain.

Owen: "(exhausted) Well let's just get a room and wait to hear more about this."

Lariat: "I will admit that climb took a bit out of us."

The two enter the inn as Thoris notices them just as he turns around.

Thoris: "(confused) Who were those people? (smacking face) They're just travelers."

Thoris looks back towards the mine.

Thoris: "(determined) I won't let a bunch of bats keep me from reaching my goal. Nothing will change that."

Jex's orb glows a little brighter.

Jex: "Nearly there."
