67. Blessed beginning
Olivia
Grandma's eyes were fixed intently on me and Logan. Nervousness crept over me as I awaited what she had to say. I shifted in my seat when she cleared her throat, and her gaze shifted to Logan. "So, what plans do you have for my granddaughter?" she asked.
My brows creased in confusion. "What plan, Grandma? Logan and I are married."
She threw me a glare in return. "Are you his mouth? I'm talking to Logan, not you."
I formed my lips into a thin line. "Sure, go on," I urged, using my hand to indicate that she should continue. I didn't even want to look at Logan, knowing he might become nervous.
"My plan is simple. I'm going to make her the happiest person alive." Heat crept up my cheeks at his words. Logan always knew how to warm my heart and make butterflies erupt in my stomach. I was sure lucky to have someone like him in my life. I would say he was like an angel sent to me to shower my life with love and happiness.
I was snapped back to reality by Grandma's words. "You have a way with words. You have convinced me enough. I know I cannot separate you two no matter how hard I tried. I see the love for Olivia in your eyes. I pray you won't disappoint me. Olivia has a fragile heart. Little things make her emotional."
An amused smile found its way to me at my grandma's words. This was the first time she complimented me without hurling insults at the end. However, Logan took charge. "And I would add she's a crybaby," Logan added.
"What the hell!" I turned to him with a glare. "Who is a crybaby? Grandma, am I a crybaby?" I directed my question at her. The smile that occupied her lips indicated she agreed with Logan's words.
"Don't tell me you believed him. Don't test my patience, Logan. You know how I will get to you," I warned.
Logan shrugged his shoulder. "Nothing I'm not used to."
I squinted my angry eyes at him and was about to hurl the spare pillow at him when Grandma held it mid-air. "Don't even try it. I'm sure it wasn't easy handling you. Now that you're pregnant, it'd be even worse. And yes, you're a crybaby. Logan didn't lie."
"Give me a high five, Grandma," Logan chirped, pushing his hand forward. My mouth hung open as I saw her actually giving him a high five.
"When did you two become friends? I thought you didn't want him around here," I teased.
"It's all in the past. And we have sorted things out now."
"Are you sure?" I pressed on again playfully, getting another glare from her.
"I have a rich son-in-law, why would I play around with the opportunity."
"Oh, I see. It's all about the money," I squinted my eyes at her.
Logan nudged me on my shoulder. "Don't rile Grandma up. I don't mind spending all my fortune on her."
"You see, he said it himself. So don't disturb me," I shook my head with a smile. I'm glad the two are slowly getting comfortable around each other.
I saw the smile on Logan's face, a genuine one. It made my love for him grow stronger. "Logan, won't your family be worried with you leaving your work to come here?" Grandma asked in all seriousness. I had asked him the same thing, and he told me not to worry. Maybe Grandma will be able to convince him. I don't want to be the reason for his slacking off at work. I know Scott and Bernard are there, but at least he should fulfill his own part of the work.
"Don't worry, Grandma." Logan reached for her hand and began running his thumb over them. Seeing the mixed expression on his face made my body weak. At some point, I felt like he was getting emotional. Maybe he was reminded of his mother. "Work will be taken care of. You should just get better."
"You mean you're staying here until I get the transplant done?" She asked.
"Yes. I have spoken to a family doctor. We would be able to get the donor fast. This hospital isn't processing things fast. Hopefully, by the end of this week or the beginning of next week, you'd get your transplant done."
And the next thing, she was in tears. "Grandma," Logan and I said at the same time, standing up from our seats. "I don't know what to say anymore. Thank you, Logan."
Logan and I spared each other a glance. I thought it was something serious. "I promise you, Grandma, I won't allow any harm to come to you and Olivia. Her family is mine. You will be up on your feet soon."
Grandma flashed him a smile. "I trust you. You have passed all the tests of being my son-in-law." I didn't know when a giggle escaped me.
"Thank you, Grandma. Get well soon if you don't want my baby to come into this world and see my grandma sick," I muffled out.
"He won't dare. Wait, what's the gender of the baby?"
"We haven't checked yet. I want it to be a surprise. And I'm giving birth here at this hospital so you don't have to worry about anything."
She reached for my hand, and Logan and I intertwined them together. The same moisture was back in her eyes. "I wish you a happy married life. You should take care of each other."
Logan and I flashed each other a smile. "Thank you, Grandma. I will make sure I don't make her sad," Logan replied. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Like he won't.
"By the way, I heard you guys are making me money," she raised a brow.
"Of course. All thanks to Logan with his magic hands. I advised him to open up a restaurant down here."
"So, my own restaurant will go down the drain, right?" She threw me a dirty glare.
"No, I don't mean it that way. Your restaurant is still the most popular one in the whole neighborhood," I retorted. She cleared her throat in return.
---
"Logan?" I called.
"Hmm, baby girl," he answered, planting a kiss on my forehead. We had retired back home after staying at the hospital for the rest of the afternoon. Jamie insisted we head home, that she'd stay with grandma. I didn't object because I was exhausted. The same went for Logan, who had been busy in the kitchen. So, we retired back to Grandma's house and hopped into bed immediately without even bothering to change out of our clothes.
"Do you think Grandma will be fine after the transplant?" I was worried about the whole transplant thing. No one had ever gone through that in my family before, not even people close to me. So, everything was new to me.
"Why not? The transplant will be a success. Don't worry." I shifted myself in bed so that I was facing him.
"What's with the look?" He raised an eyebrow, playing with a strand of my hair. I didn't know why my heart was thumping loudly inside. I didn't know why looking at him at that moment brought out all shades of emotions in me. I blinked my eyes to prevent them from welling up.
"I love you, Logan," I confessed. His furrowed brows relaxed.
He leaned forward and planted a kiss on my lips. "I love you more, Olivia."
"Logan," I called again.
"Yes, my wife. My one and only troublemaker." A chuckle erupted from me.
"What sort of nickname is this? It seems you're looking for trouble for yourself."
"I dare not to. I promised Grandma I will never make you sad."
I pushed my lips forward. "But you're doing that. You're calling me a troublemaker." His laughter followed. I punched his chest.
"You're even laughing. I'm leaving. I don't want to sleep with you again." I slipped off the bedcovers and proceeded to get off the bed when I felt strong arms engulf me from behind. My body instantly reacted to his familiar scent. I melted in his touch.
"You know I can't sleep without you by my side." He whispered in my ears, which didn't fail to warm up my heart.
"Of course, you can. How did you sleep before?" I said, forming my lips into a thin line to prevent myself from laughing. I wanted to tease him a bit.
Logan slowly whirled me around and cupped my face with both of his palms. "The past is different from now. I have never told you this before, but I have suffered from anxiety and depression."
Shock filled me up. "How? When? Are you okay now?" I bombarded.
"It's all a long story. Taking medication was the only way to get me to sleep at night. Amelia even advised me not to take them again as they had begun affecting me emotionally. But ever since you came, Olivia, things have changed. I don't know how the anxiety managed to subside, but I don't get them anymore."
"You are an angel sent to me to change my life. There was no way I would let go of your hand. I can't live without you because you are already a part of my life. You are my world, Olivia. I love everything about you."
I didn't know when the tears welled up. Logan had ignited all the emotions in me. I didn't say anything; instead, I wrapped my arms around him. "You've been through a lot, Logan. But you don't have to worry anymore. I'm here for you. Always," I muffled out, rubbing my palms on his back soothingly.
We broke free from the hug, and Logan held my hand. "You see the reason why I said I can't sleep without you by my side, right?" I nodded my head and then reversed back to bed. I lay on my back and pulled him to his position.
"Let's sleep."
"I want to kiss you first," he said, rendering me speechless.
"Then do so. What are you waiting for? Unless you want to do more than kissing me," I teased. Logan's eyes darkened.
"If I do that, I'm afraid I won't be able to sleep for the night because I will behave like a lion hunting for his prey." I giggled, shaking my head.
"Or a wolf hunting for his mate," I added for him. "I can't wait for this baby to come out so that we would have sex freely." I grinned.
"You are a and girl."
"A bad girl for a naughty boy."
Logan lay back, and in a moment, his lips were on mine. I wasted no time in parting my lips to give him more access. The kiss was slow yet held a lot of promise and love. I cupped Logan's face, deepening the kiss. We kissed for what felt like hours before Logan finally broke the kiss, but he leaned his forehead on mine.
"You're driving me crazy, Olivia. I know you're mine already. But I want you in every single moment of my life. I can't wait for our baby to come out into this world."
Our eyes were fixed on one another. I saw nothing in his eyes but his love for me. I know how much Logan loves me. I trust he won't make me sad, as he promised Grandma. I interlaced our hands together and planted a lingering kiss on them. "I am already yours. We are in for a forever ride. You, me..." I trailed off, placing our hands on my baby bump. "And our baby." Logan's smile widened.
"I like the sound of that. I'm excited."
"Likewise me. We-"
A wince escaped me as I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. "Logan." I called out. Logan sat upright.
"What's wrong? Are you okay? Is the baby kicking in?" He bombarded, helping me up, but my whole body felt weak, and the pain kept increasing.
"I don't think I can move." I held Logan's hand tightly. He got off the bed, and I bit my bottom lip. Why the pain all of a sudden? And in the middle of the night. As my eyes looked down to the floor, I was met with a liquid dangling from my legs onto the floor.
I gripped his hand. "I think my water broke, Logan!" I exclaimed, biting my bottom lip even more. I was sure it would leave a mark. Logan's eyes darted left to right, thinking about what to do. He was confused.
"Logan, take me to the hospital!" I yelled out. And the next thing, he scooped me into his arms and sauntered to the door.
---
I began hurling insults at Logan even before we reached the hospital. It was all his fault I was going through such pain. I didn't know how or when we arrived at the hospital. What I knew was that Logan was going to pay if I didn't get out of the operating room alive. "I will kill you if something happens to me," I warned.
"You will be fine, Olivia. Don't panic. Remember it is not the end of the world," Jamie's reassuring words resonated in my ears, but I was too far in pain to store her words in my brain.
"Tell Grandma to forgive me for troubling her. I will never forget her kindness and support. And you, Jamie, I'm sorry for teasing you to get married. Don't even get married. There's nothing special in it. In the end, they will leave you to suffer with the pregnancy."
My body was being transferred to a stretcher, and that was when the real panic visited me. Is this how giving birth is? You would be left all alone, with pain and fear. "Nurse, please call my husband. I want him to be by my side," I said to the nurse who was rolling the stretcher towards the operating room.
"Don't worry. Your husband will be with you after delivery. No one is allowed inside while the operation is going on."
I was in pain, but it didn't stop me from hissing and hurling insults at the nurse. "Do I care! He was the one who put this in me. He has to be there to witness what he caused."
I didn't miss noticing the smile that curved up her lips. "You're laughing! You're taking me for a joke. Call my husband im-"
"Argh!"
"Ma'am, you have to stop talking if you want to deliver safely and if you want to see your husband." I swallowed my saliva and gripped my side tightly.
Just before the doors slid open, I held the nurse's hand. "Please, in case something happens to me, tell Logan that I love him."
The nurse nodded her head in response. "I will do that." And then I was taken inside.
---
I didn't know how I ended up on the main bed with the doctor urging me to push. "I can't," I screamed out after pushing several times. My whole body was weak. I didn't know giving birth wouldn't be easy.
"Push!" His voice came through again. I gripped the bedcovers tightly, biting my bottom lip. "I swear, after this, I will kill Logan." I gathered my strength and pushed harder.
"Doctor, why didn't you operate... and remove the baby... instead..." I pushed again.
"Why do I have to experience... this pain..." I pushed again.
"You're getting there. I can see the baby's head. Let's do this. One more push." As the doctor mentioned seeing the baby's head, it somehow gave me strength.
I thought of all the weeks and months I've gone through carrying the baby inside me. I thought of my family - Logan, my grandma, and the whole Nero family. I had to do this, not only for myself but for the entire family.
Summoning the remaining strength I had in me, I pushed harder, my voice echoing all over the room. The next thing that followed was the cries of a baby. My head fell back on the bed in exhaustion. "Congratulations Mrs. Olivia. You have given birth to a bouncing baby boy." I heard the doctor say, yet his voice sounded distant, and my vision blurred as my eyes began to close.
My eyes reopened to familiar voices. "She's awake," I heard someone say, a voice like Amelia's. I slowly shifted my eyes from the ceiling to my side.
"How are you feeling now?" Logan's warm hands engulfed me.
"My head is heavy. You will pay for this later," I threw him a dirty look.
"Are you sure you are the one who gave birth a few hours ago? Why are you glaring at Logan?"
Wait... Sarah's voice. My eyes scanned the room, and I almost let out a gasp seeing Sarah and Amelia.
"You guys are here?" I croaked, my eyes stopping on Amelia.
She sat on the bed. "We had to. Logan was worried and decided to call and inform us. So we rushed here. Congratulations. The Nero family finally has a male heir."
"Congratulations Olivia. I'm proud of you. You're finally a mother," Jamie uttered, flashing me a smile.
"Thank you, Jamie. But don't get pregnant. You will suffer."
The ladies burst into laughter. "Here," Sarah said through the other side. Tears welled up in my eyes as I saw her holding the baby. With shaky hands, I collected the baby from her embrace.
"Hi baby, welcome to the world," I muffled out, touching the baby's cheeks. I turned to Logan. "Our baby is finally out, Logan," I choked out, tears streaming down my face.
I could swear I saw the same tears in his eyes. "I know, right. We are officially parents," he chuckled, and we stared at our sleeping baby.
"Where is Grandma? I didn't see her around," I asked, my eyes roaming around the room.
"She's in the ICU. She's undergoing surgery." My heart literally dropped.
