66. Devils call
Olivia
"Three plates of fried shrimp for table two!" Jamie's voice boomed through the crowded room.
"Coming!" I yelled back from the counter and then made my way into the kitchen.
"I've told you countless times about shouting," Logan scolded.
"Three plates of fried shrimp for table two. Looks like Grandma will just have to hire you. People are liking your fried shrimps," I said with an amused smile, brushing off his first statement.
"Trying to dodge the topic by using sweet words on me, right?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Did I? If I don't shout, how would the customers hear me?" I voiced out. Logan dished out the shrimp onto three plates.
"If they can't hear, they should fuck off. They can't stress my wife." That made me blush like a fool, and I didn't try to hide it.
"Easy. At least no one is flirting with your wife." I mused.
"They won't even dare." Logan winked at me, making the situation even worse. I was sure he could see right through my blush.
"You guys should wait till we're closed, then you can flirt however you want," Jamie's sudden voice resonated.
Logan cleared his throat, and I rolled my eyes. I was about to grab two plates when Logan beat me to it by holding my wrist, stopping me. "Take one plate. Jamie, take the rest."
Jamie's mouth hung open. "Why do I sense mockery here? You guys are taking advantage of me because I'm single, right? I will take you all by surprise." She pointed a finger at Logan and me before sauntering out. I chuckled at her outburst before following suit.
It wasn't easy, but the three of us managed the restaurant, with Jamie and me going back and forth with customer orders while Logan took charge of the kitchen as the chef. Even though Logan kept monitoring my every move and sometimes didn't allow me to take customer orders, asking Jamie to do it instead, I don't blame him. It only made my love for him more special and stronger, seeing the way he takes care of me.
As the last customer left, Jamie changed the sign from "open" to "closed" before we collapsed onto one of the tables. "I haven't had such a tiring day in a while," Jamie sighed, stretching her legs.
"Stop being lazy. We didn't do that much," I retorted, giving her a playful look.
"Point of correction. You didn't do that much. Logan kept switching the orders to me."
My cheeks heated up at the memory of how he reminded me not to raise my voice or walk too fast. "Well, he knows how to take care of his wife," I mumbled, tucking my hair behind my ears.
"What are you ladies gossiping about?" Logan approached us and placed a mug in front of me.
"What's this?" I examined the contents. It wasn't coffee; it smelled like a mixture of honey and lemon.
"It's herbal tea. I heard it's good for the body." I couldn't help but marvel at how sweet my husband was. I glanced at Jamie, who was busy rolling her eyes. Her action made me let out a light laugh.
"Find yourself a man, my dear best friend," I teased, taking a sip of the tea. The warmth and taste immediately filled my senses.
"Not bad. How did you get it?" I inquired. Logan took his seat.
"It's a secret."
"What! When did we start having secrets between us?" Logan's smile raised a red flag. "Better spill it out," I warned.
"Or else?"
"Wow. You're even challenging me. Or I will—" A wince escaped me when I felt a pain on my lower back.
"What's wrong?" Logan asked, touching my arm.
I bit my bottom lip. The pain didn't come again. "Nothing serious. Just a slight pain in my lower back. I think it was due to all the walking around," I explained.
**
"Seriously, Logan. I told you I'm fine. I don't feel any more pain. You're worrying over nothing," I tried to explain.
After what happened at the restaurant, Logan didn't allow me to be in peace, and we had to come to the hospital so the doctor could check my condition. I knew the pain was due to the stress of going to and fro at the restaurant, which I didn't even do much.
"I won't rest assured until the doctor tells me you're okay himself," he said, holding my wrist firmly.
"I will be in Grandma's room," Jamie announced, entering the room.
"Logan, I don't—"
"I don't want to hear any excuses," he deadpanned. I heaved out a sharp breath. Well, he wouldn't back down. Although I like his caring side.
As we stood in front of the doctor's office, Logan knocked on the door. The doctor's voice sounded from the other end, ushering us in. "Mr. Logan, I was just about to call you," the doctor started as he shifted his eyes from the computer screen.
"Oh, really? Is everything okay?" Logan asked.
"Yes. It's regarding Mrs. Elizabeth."
"What is wrong with my grandma? Have you found the donor?" I charged towards his table.
"Can you calm down, Olivia? Doctor, before we discuss anything, I want you to check her up. She has been experiencing pain in her lower back."
"It was just once," I corrected him. He wanted to make it sound as if the pain was happening all the time. He was getting worried unnecessarily. "And I don't feel the pain anymore. It was probably due to stress."
"You are not the doctor to predict what caused the pain," Logan answered.
"You haven't done any scans since your arrival here," the doctor chimed in. He was right. What I knew was I'm in my last month. However, I hadn't prepared anything. Funny enough, we didn't know the gender of the baby.
"The last time she went to the hospital was close to a month now. I think she should get everything done here."
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes when the doctor announced that I would do a scan. Logan was about to leave the room when I called out to him. "Don't tell me you're going to leave me. Come and stay and watch how your baby is growing inside," I said. I didn't miss the smile that curved up his lips. He knew when to make my heart flutter.
Logan sat on the stool next to me on the bed while the doctor scanned my stomach. I felt a warm hand intertwining with mine. "It seems like it's the baby kicking in," the doctor said.
"See? I told you. You're getting worried over nothing," I muffled out, but Logan's gaze seemed to be focused on the ultrasound machine.
"Can you see our baby?" I said again, noticing the way his hand tightened around mine.
"Yes, I can't wait. Doctor, when should we expect her delivery?" His eyes shifted to the doctor.
"You shouldn't worry. She should be in labor within a week or two." I gripped his hand, making him look at me. I could swear I saw moisture in his eyes.
"Olivia-"
"You don't have to say anything, Logan. I'm as excited as you. We have a lot to plan." We shared an emotional moment before the clearing of the doctor's voice snapped us back to reality.
"Why don't we talk about Mrs. Elizabeth's condition?" He said. Right. I had even forgotten about it.
Logan helped me down from the bed before we grabbed our seats. "Um.. before that, you didn't ask me about the gender or do you know already?"
Logan and I shared a look. "I want it to be a surprise," I replied back. If you ask me what my choice is, I don't really mind. Whether it's a boy or a girl. I'm okay with both genders.
"Alright then. Regarding Mrs. Elizabeth's, we have processed the paperwork. She came to me earlier."
I shot him a questioning brow. "Fret not. She came to tell me she'd go ahead with the transplant," he proclaimed, letting out a smile. I didn't know when I let out a sigh of relief. Finally, she had let her guard down. She didn't only give Logan and I her blessings; she was willing to go ahead with the transplant.
"We'll be able to get feedback before the end of this week, and then we'll prepare for the surgery. Your grandma will be all better," he assured.
"Thank you, Doctor."
"What now?" I said as we left the doctor's office.
"What now?" Logan repeated. I squinted my eyes at him. "You didn't say anything when I told the doctor I want the gender of the baby to be a surprise."
He formed his lips into a thin line. "I'm okay with whatever you decide."
"You're whipped," I teased. Logan leaned forward and snaked his hands around my waist, pulling me in. "I'm whipped in your love. I don't have regrets," I giggled in return. Logan pressed a light kiss on my lips.
"When are you going back to the city? You can't leave your work pending," I had been wanting to ask him. I'm sure his brothers have resumed back at the office.
"I don't have a reason to go back when you're here. Forget work. My brothers will take care of it. Besides, you have already cracked Father. He told me not to worry and to take better care of you."
My eyes widened at his outburst. "Father said that?"
Logan nodded. "You don't know how much change you have brought to my family. You don't know how lucky I am to have you in my life."
I wrapped my arms around his neck. "And I'm grateful to have met a sweet and caring husband like you. I can't wait for our baby to arrive."
"Me too." We rested our foreheads against each other.
"If you guys are done showing off your love to the world, you should come and meet me." The familiar voice of Grandma resonated through our eardrums.
The sound of the door shutting was what we heard next.
"The devil is calling," I chuckled as Logan and I pulled apart.
