59. Grandma's outburst
Olivia
"Never mind; I'm sure Grandma was shaken up by the news. You know, this big baby bump is enough to scare her," I said with a laugh, trying to hide my confusion.
Logan held me by the shoulders. "Don't worry. Grandma will be fine. We will explain everything to her later. What you need now is rest. You haven't eaten anything since we left Costa Rica. Your eyes are puffy." I didn't miss the teasing tone in his voice. I threw him a glare in return.
"Whose fault, was it?" I threw.
"What do you mean whose fault? Did you even give me a chance to get you something? When you were literally crying like a kid being deprived of her cookies," he retorted as we made our way out of the hospital. I said nothing in return because he was right. I cried like a river when I got the call. My grandma is the only family I have left after my parents' demise. I was scared when the nurse who had called said she collapsed.
Logan and I managed to spot a restaurant after walking for a while. I hadn't been to the countryside for a while, so I had lost track of a lot of places. But then again, I couldn't forget the route to my grandma's house. "Welcome," an elderly woman who looked to be the same age as my grandma welcomed us.
"Good day, Ma'am," I greeted, proceeding to take my seat while Logan's eyes inspected the place. I didn't blame him; he was used to luxury. I pulled at his shirt. "Have a seat," I mouthed, my eyes going to the woman who was looking at us, perhaps waiting for Logan to take his seat so she could take our order.
Logan cleared his throat and sat down, but his eyes were still assessing the place. "What would you like to order?" the woman broke through the silence.
"What do you have on the house?" I asked, adjusting my sitting position. I didn't miss the way the woman's eyes went down to my belly.
"Since you're pregnant, I'd suggest a light meal. Do you want to try our signature Hungry Man Size noodles?"
"Hungry Man Size? Is there something like that?" I asked, getting curious. I hadn't heard such a name before. The woman let out a smile. "It is a special noodle for couples. I figure it would be good for you considering your condition."
"Wow," I said aloud, sparing Logan a look. "What do you think?" I asked. He shrugged in return. "I'm not sure. As long as it won't affect you."
"Trust me, it won't. I'm a woman, you know. I know things that are good for a pregnant woman. So, are you in?"
"Definitely," I said excitedly. The woman grinned in return. "What about drinks?" she asked.
"I—"
"We will go with water," Logan interjected.
"Alright. Your food will be with you soon," and she walked away.
I turned to Logan with a glare. "What was that?"
"What was what?" The way an amused smile played on his lips indicated he knew what I was referring to.
"Why are you inspecting the place so weirdly? And why did you tell her we will go with water?" I asked both questions. "Remember, this isn't your luxury mansion. We are not in the city but the countryside. You are bound to see local places," I added, using my hand as a way of explaining.
The next thing that followed was his laughter, a genuine sound. "What's funny?"
"Do you seriously think I won't be able to blend with local life? I was just checking the place to make sure it's clean enough for us to dine in. I don't want you having a troubled stomach due to bad food. And to answer your second question, after the long journey, water is what you need."
My mouth was left open as he explained everything calmly. I found myself clapping. "Thumbs up to you. You gave me no reason to complain. How did I get such a sweet husband like you," I teased, nudging him playfully on the shoulder.
"I'm a rare human being. My type is hard to get. You should be lucky you got me on a free platter."
"Excuse me, what free platter? Please don't feel too proud of yourself. One would think—"
"And your meal is here." I was interrupted by a bowl being placed in front of us.
"Wow," I couldn't contain my surprise as I stared at the big bowl. "So, this is the hungry man size?"
"Yes. It is one of our best sellers. It might look plain, but if you taste it, you'd understand why it's called hungry man size. The fried shrimp is on the house. Enjoy."
My mouth watered just at the sight of the noodles. "Why don't we have a taste together?" I glanced at Logan with a raised brow. He copied my action. We scooped the noodles, spared each other a look, and took it to our mouths.
My mind went blank. I rested my back on the seat. "I don't think I will leave here without having another bowl. Like, how can noodles taste so good like this? I can taste different flavors on my tongue." I won't lie. I haven't tasted something so good before. Even the noodles I had in Costa Rica the other night couldn't measure up to what I was eating at that moment.
The same expression was on Logan's face. "This woman should be given an award," Logan broke in, making me chuckle.
"I know, right." Logan and I wasted no time in digging in again. We added in the fried shrimp, which made the noodles even more delicious.
"I can see you guys enjoyed your meal," the woman walked up to us, a smile dancing on her face.
I gave her a thumbs up in return. "We really do. I now understand why it's called a best seller. You need an award, ma'am."
"Thank you for the meal, ma'am." Logan chimed in.
"I'm glad you do. Please come back again," she spoke.
"We will," Logan answered. The woman nodded her head with a smile and walked away.
"If Sarah and Amelia hear about this noodle, they will freak out," I uttered, picturing how Sarah would react to the noodles.
The sound of Logan's phone blared through the place. "Talking of the devil." He turned his phone screen to face me. Amelia was the one calling, a video call at that.
"Wait, let me adjust myself. Do I look okay?" I pinned my hair behind my ear and cleaned my face with my palms.
"Seriously, you don't have to adjust yourself. You're looking perfect already. I'm picking up."
As Logan picked up the call, surprise filled me as I saw the faces of all the family members. "Olivia!" Amelia exclaimed.
"Hey, guys!" I chimed back waving at them. They were in a restaurant too, the suite restaurant. I didn't forget the spot.
"How are you guys? How is your Grandma's health?" Sarah's face appeared as she took a bite of her sandwich.
"We're doing good, as you can see. We just finished eating an amazing, mouthwatering noodle. You guys will literally pass out. It's called the hungry man size." I had Logan turn the camera to show them the empty bowl. "And my Grandma is getting better."
"Why are you showing us an empty bowl?" Sarah hissed. I giggled in return.
"You guys have to fly all the way here to see and taste it for yourselves."
Amelia rolled her eyes in return. "We really missed you here, Olivia." Amelia's voice was soft.
"We miss the energy you bring her," Sarah added. My heart swelled at their words. I didn't know I had such an effect on the family. When I thought I wouldn't be able to crack their shell.
"Our leader is sending his greetings." Amelia shifted the camera to Father, who was seated next to Scott.
He cleared his throat. "Hope you're taking care of your Grandmother?" His tone was calm as always.
A smile spread across my face. "Yes, Father. She's getting better. Thank you for asking." I couldn't help but recall my Grandma's reaction to Mr. Nero. Why had she reacted that way? Did they know each other?
My thoughts were interrupted by Scott's voice. "Wish her a speedy recovery."
"Thank you, Scott," the rest all chimed in. I didn't realize when tears welled up in my eyes. Logan passed me a knowing glance.
"Oh, Olivia, we didn't mean to make you cry," Amelia said.
"You guys are the best. Don't worry about us and enjoy your trip. Sarah and Amelia, remember our motto: Shut down Costa Rica at all costs!" I exclaimed.
"We're definitely shutting it down!" They said in unison.
"Crying is very easy for you," Logan teased as he ended the call.
I sniffed away my tears and passed him a glare. "I can't help it when your family are being so nice to me," I said. Their gesture really warmed my heart. If someone had asked me before if we'd be so comfortable with each other, I would have laughed it off. But now, I had found a family in them.
I reached for Logan's hand and held it in mine. "I'm happy to be a part of your family," I said with honesty in my voice.
Logan squeezed my hand back. "And I'm happy to be a part of your life. Now, let's go back to the hospital. I'm sure Grandma is up by now."
"Sure. Let me send Jamie a quick text. I haven't informed her about Grandma's health condition."
**
"Grandma, we're back," I announced, pushing the door to her room open. Logan followed closely behind me.
"He's here again? I thought I told him to leave." Her voice was starting to get loud, and confusion clouded my face. I didn't expect her to still be fixated on this issue. Logan stepped forward.
"Grandma, I know you're shaken up. We made a mistake by not informing you, and we didn't expect it to turn out this way. However, I want you to know that I'm taking responsibility as the father of the baby. I will make sure your granddaughter doesn't experience any sadness. I will ch—"
Grandma's next words shocked both of us to the core. My mind almost went blank with confusion and anger. "I'm not talking about what happened between you two. I don't mind that. What I want from you is to leave my granddaughter. Stay away from her!" It was the worst shock I'd received all day.
