31 | IN WHICH SHE DISCOVERED HIDDEN TRUTHS

Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay.

She heard the words, the vaguely familiar voice, coming out of the darkness.

And then somehow she was saying them, 'Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay.'

Malora and Lorena were sitting in the Kilburn children's hospital awaiting the doctor that had delivered Lorena's baby, Dr. Beauchamp and the baby in question.

Her sister had complained that the six month old baby had been refusing to eat for a few days now, plus he kept throwing up and had a very high temperature. They'd rushed him down to the hospital this morning when they woke up to find his little lips devoid of any color, plus he was had a high fever and kept sweating a lot.

It's been two hours since the baby was rushed into ICU and they'd been told to wait while Dr. Beauchamp ran several tests to determine the cause of the fever.

Her sister looked so frail and frightened, although her eyes remained dry. But Malora knew deep down inside, Lorena was sobbing.

Louis was an unplanned baby. Lorena had fallen for a married man charm, who'd promised to divorce his wife to marry her, but left her in the end with a baby and a restraining order. From the day the little guy came into the world, Malora loved him unconditionally. She refused to let her sister work until the baby was old enough to be left in a day care—and that was a year old in Malora's dictionary. Louis looked so much like his mother, and only inherited his father's green eyes, which they were grateful for.

'It's okay, Mal.' Lorena squeezed Malora's fingers, a faint smile curving the corner of her lips. 'He'll be fine.'

'I hope so, Rena,' Malora sobbed. 'I can't loose him, too.'

When Dr. Beauchamp brought the reports to them, Lorena broke down in tears, while it was Malora's turn to hold and comfort her sister. They needed a lot of money to treat the cancer, the doctor had said before leaving to attend to another patient. Money and miracle it would seem like.

Right there in the hospital, the smell of bleach and medicines coating her senses, Malora vowed to do everything in her power to find get the money. Even if she had to sell her body to get it.

*

Instead of the muffled, echoing voices of before, voices from the past, Malora heard only silence.

She was conscious of a fierce pounding of her head, and she saw nothing but blackness.

For a long stretch of time, this frightened her. The world had turned dark, silent, and unrevealing. But gradually she thought of something she might be able to do about it.

Very slowly, very carefully, she edged open her eyes.

The sterile light of the room hit her vision and caused a jolt of pain to shoot through her head. With a gasp, she squeezed her eyes shut again. She wasn't able to raise her head much, so she raised them a little further.

Lloyd sat in a chair beside her. His face was pale and damp, as if he'd been perspiring, but his expression was composed, just slightly strained.

'What happened?' She forced herself to shift her eyes around her, and she discovered she was in a hospital room. As instinct caught up to her before anything else, she gasped, 'Titan?'

'Titan is fine. You were in a car accident,' Lloyd said softly. 'You took a significant blow to the head. You might not remember the accident. That's normal.'

She tried to think back, recall anything about being in car accident, but it hurt too much to make her mind work that way. As awareness continued to come back to her, she was suddenly conscious of the way her whole body hurt.

She glanced down and saw bindings on her arm.

'You broke a bone in your arm,' Lloyd explained. 'And cracked a couple of ribs.'

'Oh.' She swallowed. When she was able to get her eyes focused on Lloyd once more, something about his expression made her heart pound in fear.

He looked perfectly calm, perfectly stoic. But she saw some sort of pained emotion shuddering under the surface of his absolute composure.

'Am I. . .' She cleared her voice. 'Am I all right?'

'Yes. Broken bones and some bruises. The hit on the head was the most serious thing.'

Despite his words, she knew it wasn't that simple. Her hands started to shake under the blanket. 'Am I. . .am I disfigured or something?'

'No. You have some bruising and broken skin, but all of it will heal.' His mouth twisted slightly. 'Does it feel like you’re disfigured?'

'No, but something is wrong. Why do you look like I'm dying?'

Lloyd took a deep breath and exhaled it hoarsely. 'You've been unconscious since the accident. We assumed it was a severe concussion and you'd shortly become conscious again.' He swallowed so hard she could see it in his throat. 'You were unconscious for almost three days. That's a really long time for a concussion. I've been waiting for you to wake up.'

Malora took a deep shuddering breath, and closed her eyes. She could hardly recall anything before the accident. It felt strange to be in here without Titan by her side.

'How is Titan, Lloyd?' She asked softly. Her eyes remained shut.

He sighed. 'He's in the ICU, Mal. He's been unconscious, too. His family have been steadily trickling in and out of the hospital since the day he'd been admitted.'

Titan's family were so close yet so far away. Did they even know that she was in the car with their son when he had an accident?

It seems Lloyd could hear her thoughts because he said, 'none of them have stopped by to check on you, and when I tried to ask about how he was, I was told that his family asked them not to disclose information about him to anyone who isn't family.'

Of course, they would say that. The man was a billionaire, after all. It didn't make it hurt any less, though. She was Titan's dirty little secret, something that was so far from the pristine world he came from. She knew this, yet she went ahead to fall in love with him, and if memory served her right, what they had sad long dead by now.

'How did you find out that I was here?'

'Lorena is listed as your emergency contact, remember? She called me to check on you.'

'How's Louis?'

Lloyd shrugged. 'She refused to tell me anything about him. I thought it strange that she would be at a party when her son is fighting for his life at the hospital.'

Malora opened her eyes, now. This wasn't the first time that happened. There was something Lorena was keeping from her, and she intended to find out once she's discharged from the hospital.

'I was so worried, Mal,' Lloyd said. 'The doctors said you need a lot of rest.'

She had nothing to say to that, so Malora let herself be dragged into the dark arms of slumber once again, making up her mind to find out every information she could about Titan's health.

*

When she woke again, Malora found a nurse checking her IV bag. The nurse was a middle aged Caucasian woman with hair as dark as midnight. Lloyd was nowhere to be seen.

The nurse smiled down at her when she was her opened eyes. 'Hey you.'

'Hi. Can I get a glass of water, please?'

'Of course.' She left. She returned a few minutes later with a disposable cup filled with water. 'Here you go.'

Malora was grateful for the cool liquid and savoured each gulp until it was empty. The nurse placed the cup on the steel trolley.

'How do you feel?' The nurse asked.

'Sore.' She sighed. 'Where's Lloyd?'

'Your boyfriend?'

Malora raised a dark brow.

'He went to the cafeteria.' The nurse uncapped the cover of the filled syringe and inserted the needle into the IV bag. 'He's been with you ever since you arrived here. You're so lucky to have someone like him.'

Since the nurse was a chatty Cathy, Malora decided to ask some questions that have been bugging her. 'The man that was with me in the car? How is he?"

'Hasn't moved a peep since he arrived, that one.' She shook her head. 'I heard they had to cut him the car to get him out. A shrapnel was removed from his chest; nearly nuked his lungs though. It's a miracle he's still alive. . .'

Malora fought back the tears threatening to spill down her cheeks, because she knew that the nurse would stop talking if she saw that she was distressed in anyway.

'But he has so many people who loves him,' chatty Cathy was still saying, 'Especially that fiancée of his. A real beauty, that one.'

Wait a minute. Did she just say fiancée? Titan was engaged?

'She barely leaves his side expect to eat, bathe and change her clothes. They both make a great couple, although I wonder why he was in the car with you instead of her.' She handed Malora some tablets and waited until she'd washed them down before checking her eyes. 'Looking all good.'

'Thank you.' Malora barely paid attention to her. Her mind was still reeling with the fact that the man she thought she knew wasn't who he claimed to be. Titan had been cheating on his fiancee with her.

Oh, God.

No wonder his family wanted nothing to do with her. They must really hate her for endangering the life of their child. It was, after all, her fault that they were in London now. If only she had kept her mother shut.

'Your boyfriend took the news of the loss of your baby like a man, though.'

The word baby was enough to snap Malora out of the labyrinth of thought she fell into. 'B-baby?' Her eyes widened. 'My Baby?'

The nurse frowned at her. 'Your boyfriend said he told you about it and told the doctor not to discuss it with you again.'

So, that was what was wrong with her. Lloyd lied to her.

'You were three days gone,' the nurse said, her eyes flashing with sympathy. 'You lost the baby on your way here. Listen, I know you the pain you must be going through now, but you're not alone. . .'

The words 'loss' and 'baby' kept ringing over and over in her head until her eyes became obscured by a red haze. A crazy beeping sound rang out through out the room, and Malora heard her name being called severally. But she was gone.

She was long gone.
