Chapter 8: The Actual Size

The shark in the water had been circling Doyle for about 3 minutes and Doyle was running out of energy, fast.

"Time for plan B," said Robin taking action.

"Plan B? Was there ever a plan A?" asked Noah confused, but also very scared. Robin ignored him and pulled on his arm to the beach. They both got out of the water. They had only been about ankle deep, so they weren't that wet. Robin raced to a pile of big rocks and yelled to Noah,

"Help me get these rocks to the edge of the water. We will throw them at the animal and see what happens,"

Noah went over to Robin and helped her take trips back and forth to the edge of the water. Once the pile of rocks was good enough for Robin, she threw a rock at the huge shark in the water,

"Don't worry, if we do hit the shark, it won't hurt him because of his size," said Robin reassuring Noah.

"Hey, watch it! Don't hit me!" yelled Doyle trying to put up an arm from the water to block his face.

"Gee, I can't throw far," said Noah throwing a rock, missing and hitting a passing stingray.

"Don't harm the stingray! It was not doing anything wrong!" shouted Robin.

"What? And the shark is?" Noah asked loudly.

Noah kept silent and kept the next thought to himself because Robin just glared at him. Then Noah remembered that the shark was circling his best friend. Doyle was now floating so he could rest a minute.

"Don't do that! The shark will know you are giving up and eat you!" shouted Robin. She was clearly upset at both boys as she gave a monstrous sign.

Robin and Noah where still throwing rocks at the shark, missing every time. Soon they only had one left and Noah threw it with all his effort. The rock went soaring through the air and landed about a foot away from the massive sharks fin. Robin explained how the rock probably sank down and hit his body. Which made sense because of his size. From the dark shadow of the creature was about six feet wide. Three feet on each side of its fin.

The shark stopped. Doyle was now treading slowly to the beach. The sharks face was the farthest away from Doyle. His feet finally touched the bottom of the sand. He started walking on the sand to the beach when the shark started coming at him. Doyle kept going fast now. The shark couldn't come too far or it would get beached.

"Come on Doyle, hurry up and swim! He can't get you; he is too big to come this close. He would get beached," said Robin.

"Does it know that?" yelled Doyle. Noah was wondering the same thing but hadn't asked because of the angry glare earlier.

"Of course it probably knows. His face would get stuck on the sand and then his body," Noah was right not to ask that question because he could tell Robin wasn't too happy at the moment.

Noah ran into the water to help Doyle who was struggling a little. The shark had stopped and was now watching them on the beach, waiting. Now all three kids where standing on the beach watching the shark. Noah gave Doyle a water bottle. He drank the whole thing and sat down in the sand.

"Wow! What a day! This is exciting," said Robin entering the ocean again.

"What are you doing now?" Doyle asked tiredly.

"What does it look like I'm doing? I'm going to go touch him,"

"WHAT?" asked Noah alarmed by the response.

Robin sighed and said,

"Because sometimes animals calm down by the touch of a hand and the look of gentle eyes. I'm pretty good at it too. I do it all the time when I see an animal at home," She looked back to the shark and murmured something under hear breath, "But I've never done it to a shark before. And certainly not to a shark this big,"

She kept going farther and farther. Eventually Doyle and Noah got a little closer to her, but didn't go deep in the water; just to their ankles. It seemed like Robin had no fear and usually Noah didn't either. He had climbed trees, climbed houses, jumped of high places, and broken many bones in his life, but today Noah wasn't feeling to brave.

Robin kept going. She stopped at the edge of the drop off area. She was about chest high with water. Since the water was so calm, she didn't get hit by any waves. But if she did stumble, even a little, she would fall into the deeper water and who knew what the shark would do then.

Finally she reached out her arm and touched the creature's enormous nose. They all sat there for a minute in silence. Robin was looking down at its giant Black eyes. The eyes were looking up at her she could tell by the way they popped upwards.

Then out of nowhere, the giant shark turned and started backing up all the way back to the island which was really far. Its two enormous pectoral fins started going fast in circles as he tried half backing up and turning.

Then once it was back really far (back to the island) it did the most unexpected thing any of the kids would ever think. The shark charged forward, tail swishing back and forth, and jumped out of the water. Doyle, Noah, and Robin stayed still and watched the giant creature in ah. Even Robin who had never seen anything like this.

Its body was enormous. At least seventy feet long and six feet wide! They could see now that his underbody was a shade of white and mostly the top of him was grey. It had a really long pointy nose and tall tail and fin. His mouth was open barley and all they could see was the razor sharp tips of his thousands of teeth. The moment went by as if it were in slow motion.

Finally the moment was over and neither one of the kids would ever forget what had just happened.
