Chapter 7: Meeting Robin
10 minutes later, a smiling girl walked across the road and was walking to them waving at Doyle. She had dirty blond hair, brown eyes, wore light pink lip-gloss, and wore a pink bathing suit with a purple jacket over it. She also held onto a pink and purple striped beach bag.
Doyle turned around to Noah and said,
"She is a little talkative and a little bossy just to let you know," Noah gave a smile and they both turned around to Robin standing behind them already. She put down her pink and purple striped beach bag.
"Whoo! Hello," said Noah very surprised to see her so close to them already.
"Hi I'm Robin, as you probably already know. And you probably already know that I am Doyle's only girl cousin and you probably already know that I like sharks, dolphins, and whales. And I want to be a Marine Biologist when I am older. Wait you knew that right?" said Robin shaking Noah's hand the whole time.
"Um... yah. Hi I'm Noah and I..." started Noah.
"Great, well let's get to the mystery. I'm great at solving things. I do mystery solving with my younger brother all the time," she said taking off her jacket and then walking into the water. Doyle and Noah looked at each other and smiled.
"Come on, don't be scared. The waters nice and warm," said Robin already about 5 feet into the water treading. A wave hit her in the face as she turned back around.
"Whoops, forgot to get my googles," Robin said coming out of the water and looking in her bag. "All the essentials for the beach. A towel, goggles, water, and sunscreen," she said holding up each item as she said it.
"Plus a knife and a rope. Just in case we run into trouble," she said going back into the water with her goggles. She brought her bag to the edge of the water.
"Oh hi Doyle! I forgot to say hi to you," Robin said adjusting her pink camo goggles.
"Hey," said Doyle awkwardly.
-----
It was now 12' o clock and all three kids were still at the beach searching in the waters. The entire time Doyle and Noah were listening to Robin tell facts about sharks. She never closed her mouth, Doyle was right.
They had only taken one break, and that was to eat lunch. They all ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, an apple, and some cookies. Noah and Doyle gave their extra crust from their sandwiches to the seagulls, but Robin said that wasn't a good idea. She gave a whole long boring speech about why you shouldn't feed a wild animal human food.
"Think sharks are dangerous? The most dangerous sharks are the Great White shark, the Tiger shark, the Hammerhead shark, the Mako shark and the Bull shark. On average, there are only about 100 shark attacks each year and only 10 of those result in a human death. You should check it out from their perspective, though! People kill thousands of sharks in a year for sport and for food. How crazy and mean! Shark skins are used to make products like any other leather would be. Up until the 1950's, shark livers were used as a vitamin A supplement. Shark fin soup and shark steaks are both eaten in many countries. So who do you think is the predator?" Robin asked.
Just as Robin finished, Noah saw the fin in the water about 10 feet in front of Doyle, but his back was turned.
"Doyle watch out!" yelled Noah.
Doyle turned around to an enormous fin go past him. Behind the fin about 64 feet was a tail popping out of the water. Everybody was now silent, even Robin, which hadn't been silent all afternoon.
"I don't believe it!" Robin started to say, "I know what that shark is, but it's supposed to be extinct," Noah turned to her and blurted out,
"What shark are you thinking of?"
"Megalodon," she whispered.
"Even the great white shark, the most feared of all sharks, is nothing compared to the giant shark that used to roam most of the world's oceans — the Megalodon. It used to even eat Blue whales and even Humpbacks! And they are one of the biggest whales alive!" Robin whispered to Noah, which was standing next to her with an alarmed face.
"It looks like the shark is stuck in that area," shouted Robin for both boys to hear.
Now that Noah looked at the area where the shark and Doyle were at he realized she was right. There was a smallish island and on either of the islands there were big boulders protruded for the ocean water. It looked like the shark was too big to get out of that area. It was trapped.
"We have been having some hug storms lately that make the water raise a lot, and we had that hurricane about seven months ago! Maybe that shark got stuck in there while the water was raised and then when the water went back down- "
"It got trapped!" Noah realized Robin was correct.
Robin and Noah looked back to where Doyle was. The shark was circling Doyle now.
"It must be hungry! We don't know when the last time it ate was," said Robin, "Could have been seven months ago or a couples days,"
"So do we give it food?" asked Noah.
"No silly. They eat whales, other sharks, and dolphins! Not just any meat you get from the store, but it could distract it...but we don't have time for that. Doyle can't tread water forever," Robin responded.
They looked back to Doyle feeling helpless. He was treading water as the shark circled him. All we could see of the shark was its enormous tail, its tall fin, and a very dark shadow beneath the water making a circle around Doyle. He must have felt so scared. At least the water was pretty calm in that area because the waves couldn't get past the boulders.
"What do I do?! Do something!" Doyle shouted to them.
