Chapter 1: Homework at the Beach 5-8-16
Noah was sitting at his desk picking at a slimy and very sticky piece of green gum that he had placed a while ago. He tried getting it off everyday, but had never succeeded.
"...Noah?" Mrs. Kragle was calling on him.
"Yes?" he said looking up with a bright red face. The whole class laughed. Noah was use to this.
"I have asked you to read," said Mrs. Kragle with a harsh tone to her voice.
Mrs. Kragle was the type of old and grumpy teacher that everybody talked about after class. She was liked by a few kids, but most everybody thought she was mean and annoying. Noah looked back at the history book on his desk and began to read out loud. He hated history too, so it was even worse.
Class was soon over and the bell rang. Noah was glad it was a Friday and school was out. Spring break was in 1 week too, which everybody was excited about. Everyone left and Noah and Doyle were the only ones left packing up their books and papers in their backpacks. Doyle was Noah's best friend. They had been friends ever since Noah attended this school two years ago.
Noah was about the same height as Noah. Had short brown hair, brown eyes, bright green glasses, and always wore a water proof watch and an orange floppy hat outside of class. This school didn't allow kids wearing hats indoors unless it was spirit week. It was a sign of disrespect. The hat was special because Doyle had been given this hat to by his grandma that lived in Ohio. She was his favorite grandma but he didn't see her often because of how far away they lived. That's where Doyle's originally from, Ohio.
"Want to come to my house and do homework together?" asked Doyle running toward Noah across the hall.
"Sure," said Noah putting a piece of brand new gum in his mouth. "Maybe we could go to the movies afterwards! There's this awesome new movie that's playing! I think it came out a week ago. Everyone is talking about it,"
"Well I have a soccer game tonight, remember? Sorry dude..." said Doyle.
"Oh yah... okay," said Noah directing his eyes to the floor.
-----
They were soon off the bus and walking to Doyle's house.
"I've always loved that beach," said Noah stopping and looking at the huge beach that sat before them.
The beach he was looking at was the one right next to Doyle's house. Noah always thought he was lucky to live by it. This beach had smooth sand and large fancy shells at the shoreline.
"Well its Florida, there's pretty beaches all around! Now come on I'm hungry," said Doyle walking toward home a little faster.
"Race you! On your mark, get set, go!" said Noah running away.
"Hey I wasn't ready!" Doyle said running after him quickly placing a hand over his hat. They raced up the street and to the small white house up ahead. Their backpacks flopped around awkwardly Noah in the lead.
Noah was the sports guy. He loved running and could easily run a mile in 5 minutes. Doyle on the other hand didn't mind running, but couldn't run like Noah. Noah had orange hair, green eyes, and lots of freckles. The orange hair was his actual color, not dyed and he loved the way it felt when he ran through the wind. His hair was longer than Doyle's, but didn't hang like girls hair.
"I win!" shouted Noah opening the black gate and running onto the green grass on his front yard.
"You always do," panted Doyle coming to a stop collapsing on the grass.
A little girl dressed in a pink shirt with a purple butterfly on it and blue shorts came running out the front door. This was Doyle's little sister, Nicki. She was 8 years old and in 3rd grade. She was 3 years younger than Doyle and Noah. They were in sixth grade. "Hey Nicki, what's up?" asked Doyle.
"Hi guys! You here again Noah? Well dad has to stay for a long time at work, and mom is having trouble with a new brownie recipe, and I have nobody to play with!" complained Nicki. Nicki always had something to complain about, but she was also fun, smart, and easy to talk to.
"Brownies sound yummy, why don't you help mom make them? Maybe she just needs you in the room in order to figure the recipe," Doyle explained.
Satisfied with the answer, Nicki turned around and went inside with the boys and went to the kitchen. Noah and Doyle left their backpacks at the front door and then followed Nicki into the kitchen and said "hi" to Doyle's mom. She was looking at the brownie recipe with a confused face. Nicki was pointing to one side of the recipe and her mom the other. They started talking about it.
The boys grabbed and apple from a basket that sat on the kitchen table and told Doyle's mom they were going to the beach to work on their English homework. They liked getting all their homework done on Fridays, so they could play and relax the rest of the weekend. They took their backpacks that they had left by the front door and walked to the beach.
-----
"What did you get for number 7? That's the only one I have left." Asked Noah an hour later.
"I got Personification," answered Doyle filling in the last 2 questions quickly.
"Thanks," said Noah making sure that answer made sense and the writing it down on the worksheet.
They both looked out to the ocean for a couple minutes and then eventually Noah said, "I better get home now," Noah had to be home every day by at least 5 o'clock.
"Yah, okay. My soccer game will start in about an hour anyway, I better get home too. Thanks for working with me Noah," said Doyle packing up his papers and putting them in his green backpack. That was his favorite color. They smiled at each other, gave a high five and walked in opposite directions.
