"A very good morning, afternoon, evening, a good whatever time of the day you are watching, to all of you. This generation has it so easy, I still remember the days when we had to wait for a whole full week to watch our favourite show and we couldn't miss it because then it would only be aired back the next day. But you guys today, you can watch your favourite show or movie whenever and wherever you want. Binge watching has become the norm of today. Eyebags have become a fashion, and people show them off as if they were limited edition designer bags. I feel like with the pandemic we have become more and more cozy in our comfort space that people still find it difficult to step out of it. With work from home, binge watching and food deliveries, people are reluctant to even step out of their homes. The lockdown has been quite unlucky for someone and very fruitful for the others. And our guest today probably belongs to the latter, with his latest album releasing within a month from the end of the lockdown last year, and having done fantastically, gaining him quite some trophies to decorate his place with. Please, join your hands together to help me welcome the pop sensation of India, the heartthrob of Lakhs of girls and at least a few thousands of boys, but definitely loved by Crores, Tanmay Kashyap."
The whole room was filled with the thunderous sound of clapping as soon as the host was finished introducing the guest. Majority of the girls in the audience were on the edge of their seats peeking at the entrance to catch a glimpse of the heartthrob the host described.
The applause almost doubled up when finally the audience spotted a person walking through the entrance towards their right, waving and joining his hands in a namaste as he walked towards the stage. He shook hands and hugged the host before taking his seat on the bright red couch, sitting opposite the host.
"Welcome Tanmay. And I must say there are not a lot of people who could pull off yellow but you definitely are rocking it." The host complimented Tanmay with a wide smile on his face.
"Thank you. I was just trying to look like a 'jugnu' ".
"Oohh, nice. I see you're still promoting your album a year later, huh? Not that it needs any promotion now. I'm sure people of every age group have heard at least one song from your album, even if they don't realise it."
"Oh god, you make it so hard to try and stay humble. I'm sure by the end of today I would definitely be titled some narcissist self obsessed megalomaniac jerk. I didn't even know the meaning of the word megalomaniac until someone published an article about me with that in the title. I was like, 'this sounds like a good word, maybe they're complimenting me' until I googled it."
The host laughed the kind of laugh that seems real but deep down you know is definitely fake. However the small giggles from the audience was definitely genuine.
"We from the entertainment industry are bound to be a little 'megalomaniac'. Anyways I have a lot to talk about with you, but before that as is the tradition of the show you must take a shot with me."
"Just one?"
"You can take as many as you want. But I don't think your publicist would be happy with that."
Both the guest and the audience laughed at that, as a member of the production staff walked in with a tray in his hand. He placed the tray on the koffee table in front of the couch. The host and the guest thanked the staff before lifting up the tiny glass and emptying it into their mouth with a single swift motion. Both of them cringed a little, gaining a little fit of giggles from the audience.
"So, now that that's done, we can move onto our next segment. Here I've a list of words with me and you've to answer them with the first thing that comes to your mind. You ready?"
"Yup." Tanmay fidgeted on his seat before finding a comfortable position, resting both of his elbows on his knees and his face on his intertwined fingers, furrowing his eyebrows with a look of concentration on his face.
"Okay. Here's your first word. Music?"
"Life."
"Family?"
"Love."
"Fans?"
"Stars."
"Me?"
"Fun."
"You?"
"Me." The host smiled.
"Sky?"
"Blue."
"Mom?"
"Call. Oh, I gotta call her." The audience laughed.
"Tarun?"
"Wedding."
"Nalini?"
"Shi- shimla." The host raised an eyebrow on that.
"Love?"
"Dandiya."
"And that's it. You can finally relax." Tanmay breathed a sigh of relief before slumping back on the sofa. "My god, look at you. People would think I made you run a kilometre or something."
"So anyways, Nalini and Shimla? I don't get the connection."
Tanmay visibly tenses for a second before relaxing again and answering, "Oh, it's that we always talk about making a trip to Shimla, because the both of us absolutely love trekking and whenever I think of her I immediately think of Shimla."
"Well it's confirmed, you definitely have a lot of love for your family, dandiya and Shimla." The host says with a smirk on his face, definitely not buying the whole Shimla thing but not pushing it further.
"Talking about Nalini, I must say your brother and her make a wonderful couple. They seem to be so in love with each other and guys I'm not kidding when I tell you, but one can say about the love and respect they have for each other just by observing the way they look at each other. How do you feel about their relationship?"
"God, I'm just so glad they found each other in this lifetime. Their relationship is what I someday aspire to have. The love, the respect, the understanding they have is truly astronomical. And what can I say about Nalini. I can't imagine a person better suited for my brother than her. They have become kind of like a combo deal for me, you just can't imagine one without the other."
"They have been together for what, 3 years now?"
"Yes, as far as I remember. It just seems so long. The good kind of long. Like she has always been a part of our family."
"So, are you excited that now she's soon officially going to be a part of your family?"
"Oh, I'm more than excited. I'm elated. You know, I was the first person Tarun said that he was proposing to. And I remember screaming, 'took you long enough' before hugging him."
"So about the wedding. It's been a hugely anticipated event I think across the whole nation. What do you think about that? And can you give us some little scraps about the wedding?"
"Ohh, I don't think I can do that. Nalini would definitely bury me alive if I ever do that. She's very, what's the word, controlly(?) about the whole wedding details. And wedding planning is a tough job, but with everyone's eyes on you it gets even tougher and you just can't control it yourself much longer. So both of them are definitely stressed about it, but I think they're doing a phenomenal job. They wanted to plan their wedding themselves and so far they're doing it amazingly."
"That's great to hear. But are you definitely sure that you cannot leak a little detail about the wedding? Just a teensy weensy one?"
"Well, if something's already out in the open, it's not leaking right. We are soon going to have a little cricket match."
"The groom vs the bride?"
"Yup."
"Ooh, very bollywood-y. I love that. Totally giving that, "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" vibes. And by the way, I just remembered that Nisha I mean Madhuri (Dixit) is holidaying in Shimla right now. You should definitely ask her about her trip whenever you see her." The host winked at Tanmay discreetly and Tanmay was definitely shocked at the pace at which the host could put two and two together.
"So, are you all set for the match? I remember you posting a story of your practice. I take that you genuinely broke a sweat for this match."
"Oh, I definitely broke some bones too, I think so. Although my X-ray's are fine, my wrist has definitely been weird."
The host laughed a genuine laugh, "Oh I hope it goes back to how it was. So, are you a bowler or a batsman?"
"I'm actually kind of an all rounder."
"All rounder, eh?" The host says in a sultry voice definitely making people doublethink the meaning of the word.
"You can genuinely make any word sound like an innuendo. You just lower your voice and smile creepily while saying it." Tanmay mimics his voice and expression, "Onion, eh? Lemon, eh? Books, eh?"
The audience bursts out in laughter and soon the room is filled with the sound of applause.
"Well, it takes talent to do that. So anyway, now it's time for our rapid fire round. You gotta answer these questions as fast as you can and the audience gets to decide if this beautiful and quite expensive hamper goes home with you or not. The questions range from general knowledge, bollywood, your personal choices to a bit of your personal life. Are you ready?"
"I think I got this."
"Okay so here's the first question. Which movie was the dialogue, "Pushpa, I hate tears" from?"
"Amar Prem."
"Correct. Who's a better dancer, Madhuri or Aishwarya?"
"Madhuri."
"Well you obviously have a personal bias. Anyway the next-"
"What personal bias? You asked a question about who I thought was a better dancer. Obviously there would be a personal bias. It's my choice."
The host laughed out loud, before continuing, "Well I meant personal bias as in personal bias in areas other than dance, you know with her holidaying in Shi-"
"Okay, go on, next question.'
"Are you on friendly terms with your exes?"
"A few of them, yes. Although some of them which did not end on a good note, I am not on good terms with them yet, but I definitely hope I will be someday."
"That's great. The end of one relationship doesn't mean the end of all the relationships you have with that person. You could not love them anymore, but you would always care about them a little. Moving on, what is the chemical name for salt?"
"Sodium Hydroxide?"
"It's sodium chloride. Sodium Hydroxide is for something else I think."
Someone from the audience yells something but neither the host nor the guest were able to make out what she was saying.
"Huh? Sodium Hydroxide is for what? Closet?" Tanmay was confused. Chemistry was never his strong suit.
"Caustic Soda." Finally a microphone was handed over to the audience member and everyone was able to hear her.
"Ohh. Never would have guessed that. Anyways, what's your name?"
"It's Shikha."
Tanmay almost choked on the water he was drinking. His head immediately snapped towards the person from the audience. He knew deep inside it could never be her, but he still had to look, just to confirm it.
The host smirked discreetly at Tanmay and Tanmay had the sudden urge to throw the water in his face.
"And what do you do Shikha?"
"I'm studying medicine."
"Ohh. Well, we have a gift for you. Please come up on the stage."
As the girl walked on the stage, Tanmay stood up to shake her hand and returned her hug. Tanmay then handed over the sponsored product to her, posing for the photographer, as he did. The girl was then soon escorted back to her seat by a staff member.
"Okay, moving on, if you were to be stranded on an island, who among the following would you choose to be stranded with. Tarun, your mom, your dad or Akash."
"I think it depends on the situation. Like if we're on an island and we need food, I would pick my mom, because she is very knowledgeable about the things you can and cannot eat. If I need someone who could get us out of that island, I would pick my dad, cause he's kind of a handyman. If I need someone who could fight off the wild animals, I would pick Tarun. And if I want to die on that island, I would pick Akash."
The whole room was filled with laughter as soon as Tanmay said that. Tanmay could see his future, him getting yelled at by his overdramatic best friend.
"Wow, you have a lot of trust in Akash for sure. So, the next question: what's the capital of Nagaland?"
"Kohima."
"Correct. What's the weirdest place you had sex in?"
"In a supply closet at a restaurant."
"We'll definitely delve into that later. Which movie was the song "Woh ladki hai Kahan" in?"
"Dil chahta hai."
"Correct. Do you regret any of your past romantic relationships?"
"No. But I definitely regret the way some of them ended. I don't regret the end, just the way it happened."
"How many weeks are there in a year?"
"51?"
"Close. It's 52. If you had one piece of advice for your 18 year old self, what would it be?"
"Don't look forward to growing up and just enjoy everything while you can. And lose that haircut, you think girls like it but that's the reason you're still a virgin."
"I think we have a few pictures of you in that haircut. We'll see them later. What's your current relationship status?"
"Single."
"Single and ready to mingle, huh? Anyway, here's your last question: what's the shortcut to your bed?"
"Weirdly, memes."
"And that's the rapid fire round. Let's look at your scores. The audience decides whether you pass or fail. Audience, please give your judgement with the help of the device with you."
Soon, the entire audience was busy deciding the fate of the expensive hamper, and as soon as they were done, a huge confetti cannon went off near the screen which displayed PASS in bold green letters."
"Well, congratulations Tanmay. Looks like you're taking the hamper home with you, today." The host smiled, handing the hamper to Tanmay.
"And now delving into your answers, I wanna talk about your friendship with Akash Sethwani. I think he's your only friend from the industry-"
"He is not my only friend from the industry, I have many friends in the industry, you're my friend too, aren't you?"
"Yes, of course. But Akash is probably your closest friend in the industry."
"Not just the industry. He's my closest friend."
"I heard you telling the story about how you met Akash in an interview. I recall you both met each other when both of you were voice acting as some characters for an animated film. You were new to the industry back then while Akash had already been in the business for quite a few years. So, do you think your friendship with him helped you in navigating your way in your career?"
"Definitely. He had been such a great support to me. Helping me understand the norms of the industry. I think I wouldn't be here today, without him or Smriti. I love those guys. I could talk to them about anything, any problems I have and they always have the best advice. It's great to know that you have a friend you can always count on."
"It's great to see that friendships like that still exist today. And moving to a little more steamy answer. A supply closet in a restaurant?"
"What can I say? It was a date that was going horribly, and I think the both of us realised that and we were like atleast we should have some good sex out of it."
"Well atleast you had a good time. And as I promised, we have some pictures of you from your late teens. Can we please have them on the screen."
The screen was immediately lightened up with a picture of a man in his late teens, his face full of acne and his hair, full of hair gel, sleeked back, with two little fringes falling onto his forehead from either side.
"God, look at that haircut, and that outfit. You look like a slightly upgraded version of Salman Khan from 'Tere Naam'."
"I don't even know what kind of look I was going for. And I can't believe my mom let em think that I looked handsome in that hairstyle."
"Well, that's Indian moms for you. You're always gonna be her 'Raja beta'. And moving on to your last answer, memes?"
"Yeah, I never thought that I would like them. But there's something so funny about them. I used to always wonder what's so funny about them and why they were so hyped, but now I kinda get the obsession around them."
"So, you're telling that someone could pick you up by sending you memes?"
"Not just any memes. Good memes. And yeah, I think that they could definitely land me in someone's bed."
"Well, it was nice talking to you Tanmay. Ladies and Gentlemen please give a round of applause for our guest today. Once again, Tanmay Kashyap guys."
Both the host and the guest stood up from their respective seats and hugged each other while the audience applauded and cheered.
"So, memes could land you in Shimla, huh?" The host whispered in Tanmay's ear while they were hugging.
Tanmay's eyes widened and when he pulled out of the hug, the host gave him a sly smirk along with a wink.
Their mics were now turned off and both pf them were walking towards the backstage.
"God, you should be a detective or something." Tanmay was truly shocked at the host's abilities to figure things out. "How do you even know about her?"
"I have my eyes and ears everywhere. But this time, I saw you both at the Dandiya party. I immediately recognised her because I rememvered asking her at some party if she wants to become an actress, but unfortunately my offer was rejected. When I saw the both of you together, I felt it in my bones that there definitely was something 'kaala in the dal'. And then your private account started following her, and she followed you back, and then you unfollowed her, and then I saw her latest tweet, and just like that I have a rough idea. It was not rocket science, I just put two and two together."
"Are you a RAW agent?"
"Guess you'll never know." The host shrugged and walked off leaving Tanmay wondering.
