CHAPTER V
--------------------------------------
"What the hell", I murmur groggily, rubbing my eyes, trying to look at the person who woke me up from the beautiful dream I was having. I squint my eyes trying to adjust to the sudden brightness of the living world and also trying to remember what that beautiful dream was about. Why do we forget about some of our dreams as soon as we wake up, and why the hell can't we pause our dreams and record them or something? Have any scientists thought about this? This is definitely a trillion-dollar idea. I mean if I had a trillion dollars I would definitely invest each penny into this.
Before I could formulate a business plan for the idea that my half-asleep brain construed as a 'trillion dollar idea', I fell back on my bed, face front, as somebody lunged upon me. The person quickly sat on my back and held both of my hands against my back with one of their hands, and their other hand was looped around my knees, holding both my legs together. I immediately recognized who the person was, having been held up in the same manner at least a million times.
"What the hell are you doing, Naali? Let me go." I struggled against her, knowing well that it would be fruitless.
"I demand answers." I could almost hear her gritting her teeth in anger as she spoke.
"What answers?" I acted clueless.
"Quit it, Shi shi. You know damn well what I want to know."
"Well, you ain't getting one if you don't let me go."
She immediately removed her hold from my legs and hands and got down from my back. I sat up, facing her, and sighed. She was wearing that gorgeous blush pink slip dress we bought together, her makeup still intact, and she was still in her stilettos, showing how eager she was to get the answers out of me.
"Do you have any idea how I rushed home? I lied to Tarun about how I was not feeling well and he was so worried. He kept going about how we should go see a doctor and stuff and I felt so fucking guilty lying to him. I can't just say, 'oh, I have to rush home because my sister rejected your brother and she's being so weird about it.'"
"I'm not being weird about it."
"Yes, you are. I read your tweets and I've no fucking clue what happened. I almost called up your friends on my way home. Now, just tell me how all of this happened."
"So, that's what happened...."
By now, we were both lying side by side on my bed, me on my stomach, and her facing the ceiling. Her stilettos were off within a few minutes into the story and her hair was now tied in a loose bun. I was always jealous of her hair. She inherited the silky texture from our mother, while my hair was more of a frizzy type like our father's.
"So you tried flirting with him by pretending as if he hit you, but he played the Uno-reverse card, and then when he asked you out you rejected him and gave some idiotic excuse, and then he called you out for it and then you got angry at him and tweeted about it, and then you told your friends everything and then they tried to drill some sense into you, and then you understood your mistake and then instead of apologizing to him personally you apologized on Twitter in a very diplomatic tweet that I'm pretty sure he never read so he will never know that."
"Well if you put it that way, I come out as a-"
"Total bitch."
"Hey! Girls supporting girls?"
"Not in their bullshit."
"Shi shi, just tell me one thing. Do you like him?"
My mind immediately went back to the magnificent time I had with him today. The way he smiled, bringing out the dimple on his left cheek and showing off his crooked right canine. The way his eyes shone brightly when he talked about his favorite dessert and the way he listened to me talk about my profession with a hint of a smile. The way he was so worried when he thought he accidentally hurt me and the way he tried to make me feel better.
"Yes."
"Do you want to go on this date and see how it goes?"
"Yes."
"Then you don't have to worry about anothet single thing. Go on this date. Have fun and see where it leads you. I will handle everything."
She didn't have to say a single extra thing. I realized that all along I was just waiting to hear those words from her mouth to get over my hesitation, and now that I heard them it felt like a weight was lifted from my chest.
I immediately sat up and hugged her tightly while she hugged me back just as tight. And that's exactly how we fell asleep, cuddling each other, with her still in that slip dress, her makeup and hair a huge mess.
