It was funny really, their meeting. The two were just sort of shoved towards one another and forced to stand next to each other awkwardly, shuffling their feet and looking at anything that wasn't one another. It could've been fate that made Karkat sigh in annoyance as his dancestor droned on and on. It could've been fate that made Dirk and Dave walk towards the two candy blooded trolls in the dream bubbles. It could've been fate that made Karkat hastily grab Kankri's arm and pull him toward the two Strider's and shove the deceased Vantas towards the Alpha Strider as he grabbed Dave's hand and made a hasty get away. It could've been fate.
After a long awkward pause, Kankri sucked up second long fear of talking to this stranger and introduced himself. Of course Kankri went through the whole process of explaining his triggers, his culture, a little bit of background information and blah blah blah. Throughout this entire speech though, Dirk waited patiently for the troll to finish. He was fascinated really. He was fascinated that this small troll was able to go on and on and on without seeming to stop and gather his thoughts for one moment. Dirk was actually impressed.
When the giant speech was done, Dirk did his own introduction speech. Although the human's speech wasn't as long and stretched out as the troll's it was still quite long and boring itself. Kankri was intrigued. The main thing that made Dirk so intriguing was his supposed background, he had grown up in a troll based society. Dirk grew up in a society similar to Karkat's and Kankri was hungry for more information.
Because of that thirst for knowledge, that of course wasn't their last little meeting. It was the last time they were forced together by the hands of Karkat though.
Kankri would idly sit besides a tree, reading old papers or thinking to himself, when Dirk would appear. The human knew that when Kankri's eyes were closed that that was a sign for him to quietly wait until he was finished with his thought process. Dirk did wait patiently. He would fiddle with his phone or mess with an old robotic project he had stashed away in sylladex long ago until the nubby-horned troll opened his eyes.
The two would talk for absolute hours. They discussed different hot topics in their own cultures. Kankri would go on about the horrible blood based hierarchy and any other thing he classified as triggering. Dirk would talk about how evil the Batterwitch was and what kind of things he had to do to survive in his world.
Those conversational topics were soon worn out and changed to something more personal. Dirk told Kankri about his previously failed relationship with Jake, which lead to an awkward talk about human sexuality and what people used to think of it, and about how much he admired his older brother though he never got to know him. Kankri spoke about the discrimination against him due to his mutant blood color and the reason as to why he never wore the symbol that was given to his dancestor.
From personal lives the topic changed to that of their ancestors and pre-scratch selves. Kankri told Dirk how he often felt like he wasn't good enough in the eyes of others and himself because of the other trolls in his bloodline. His ancestor did many great things to try to keep the peace that the Empress worked for so long to make, his pre-scratch self endured a life full of hardship and died to bring awareness of the horrible hierarchy and tried to change it, hell Karkat had an actual prophecy describing him as the next savior. And Kankri? Nothing. He was just there. He was just a troll who spouted bullshit about trigger warnings.
Dirk told Kankri about how he felt like a failure to his friends and to his brother. His older brother was a famous director. He had amazing movies that rebelled against the Condescension and made some effort to stop her. Hell, he even killed her evil juggalos. His pre-scratch self was a dick. He had constantly neglected and abused Dave and now Dave can't really look at Dirk without getting some sort of horrible flashback and Dirk felt horrible about it but he knew he couldn't do anything about it. Dave was a fucking Knight of Time. He was basically the one guy that kept everything in tact, he was the one that had to watch other versions of himself die. Dirk? All Dirk ever did was hurt the people he cared for, whether it was directly or indirectly.
Dirk never felt so close to anyone before. He had just spilled his guts to Kankri, every horrible little thing about himself, and the troll sat there and listened to everything. Hell, Kankri was even attempting to comfort him. When all that was said and done, Kankri returned to his own little corner of the bubbles and Dirk went to his own home as well.
Kankri was overwhelmed. Not because of the intense emotions that had just been shared, but because of the feelings those emotions had stirred up. He was a celibate. He didn't have these kinds of feelings for anyone. He was a celibate. He wasn't supposed to want to be in a quadrant with anyone. He was a celibate, this wasn't supposed to be happening.
No. He wasn't going to freak out. He was going to stay calm and collected and he was going to pretend like he wasn't feeling this towards a human. He was going to fix himself.
The next day when they met at their designated area, Kankri acted as calm as possible. They talked like normal and everything went fine. Kankri repeated this same little process each time they met. Pretty soon Kankri realized that it wasn't working. He was just falling deeper flushed for Dirk and at long last he just accepted it. The next day they met, Kankri dropped his pretending not to like Dirk act and just caved in. He didn't act any different, or so he thought. It was the little things that were noticeable. Laying a head on the other's shoulder, holding eye contact for a moment too long, hands finding their way to the other's grasp. Pretty soon they just melted in a relationship.
They hadn't even realized they had unconsciously gotten into a flushed relationship until they ran into Karkat and Dave in the bubbles. Karkat gave the two one long stare before asking the inevitable relationship question to the two, who were holding each other's hands. They gave each other a small glance before Kankri slowly nodded, a small smile forming on his face.
So, it wasn't fate that brought them together. It was Karkat's inability to be patient that brought them together.
