Chapter 9
Snitch shrugged and grimaced while he walked over to me with his little sister, Maddie, at his side, and Jethro instantly moved out of his way. "I still go by Snitch," he said, "but school insists on having me be called Matthew or Matt." He rolled his eyes and scowled, and I couldn't help but laugh.
"And how many people follow that rule and call you Snitch?" I asked and gave him a side hug when he made it to my side.
"Nobody," he said and shook his head. He grinned amused while he shrugged. "All of the teachers say "Sni- uh, I mean, Matthew," if they ask me something or tell me to do something. It is funny."
I bit back another small laugh and gave his sister a hug when he pulled away and placed a quick kiss to his sister's head before I looked at him. "I am not surprised, Snitch," I said. "You have been called Snitch for most of your life, and I don't think that it is going to change any time soon." I moved a hand through his hair, and he groaned in annoyance and swatted at my hands.
"Stop, Katie," he groaned while he pouted. He moved away from me and walked over to the kitchen table. He scowled and narrowed his eyes while he stared at me, folding his arms across his chest. "Why do you have to move a hand through my hair?"
"Because it is so soft," I said, biting back a small laugh. "Did you have to move that far away from me?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question.
"Yes," he said and nodded in confirmation, "and because your stomach is becoming annoying."
Sure enough, my stomach growled in hunger, earning a triumphant grin from Snitch. "Shush," I said, my cheeks turning red while I looked away from them. "It's been a long day, and I know it's been a long day for you all as well."
Snitch pressed his lips into a thin line, growing serious. He didn't say a word while he slowly nodded, and pain flashed through his eyes.
Jethro cleared his throat and shifted on his feet, and we looked at him. "Why don't you go ahead and sit down, Katie? Ben is almost done with cooking food for everyone. Have you seen everyone in your old group yet?"
I gave him a pointed look and raised both eyebrows in unison, earning a small grin from him. I didn't say a word while I walked over to the kitchen table and sat down with Jethro and Maddie following me.
"I take that as a no," he said. He sighed and sat down while I sat down in a different seat with Maddie sitting down beside me. 'How are you feeling?' he asked and raised an eyebrow in question, linking me.
I grimaced but didn't say a word while I shrugged. I was exhausted and nervous, and I had no idea how else I was feeling while I looked at my "new" Alpha.
My Alpha pressed his lips into a thin line and slowly nodded. He didn't say a word and sat down in the seat beside me while he looked between Ben and I before he solely looked at me, silently telling me to give him a chance.
I held back an eye roll and pressed my lips into a thin line. 'Luna and I already talked, and I was going to give him a chance,' I said, 'but that doesn't stop the fear or nervousness that I am feeling right now.'
'Hmph.' Jethro nodded and set his jaw. He didn't say an actual word while Ben walked over to me with a plate of food and was followed by Snitch with a plate of food in his hands.
I offered Ben a tight smile, my heart pounding fast and hard in my chest while I stared at him. "Thank you, Ben," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Of course," Ben said. He cleared his throat and shifted on his feet while he placed the food in front of me. "How are you?" he asked while he cocked his head and studied me, raising an eyebrow in question.
"I've been better," I said, biting back a small laugh. I moved a hand through my hair and across my face while I shook my head. "Hungry."
Ben bit back a small smile and slowly nodded. He didn't say a word and backed up, giving me some space, and I couldn't help but breathe a small sigh of relief.
Thank Goddess...
Ben walked over to the island where someone else sat, watching me with wide eyes. He sat down and nudged the other person, and the boy turned to look at him before he looked at me with the same wide eyes. "Stop staring," he said and narrowed his eyes further.
"But she's so pretty," the boy said, and my cheeks instantly turned red, and I looked down, feeling very bashful. "What is her name?"
"Well, her name is Katie," Snitch said and looked at the boy. He sat down near me, and I couldn't help but bite back a small snort while I looked at him. "We've said that a couple of times. Pay attention."
"Snitch," I said, and he instantly looked at me with wide eyes. "Be nice."
"I am being nice," he said while he shook his head. "I mean, I didn't call him st-"
"Matthew," I warned while I scowled and narrowed my eyes, calling him by his real name in an attempt to shut him up, and he looked at me with wide eyes. "Stop," I warned. "I'm serious, Matthew."
Snitch bit back a small sigh and shook his head. He didn't say a word while he folded his arms across his chest and narrowed his eyes, staring at me.
"Go ahead and eat, Snitch," I said and hesitated before I did what I told him to do, starting to eat. "I thought you were hungry."
"I am," he said, "but not as hungry as you." He shifted in his seat and watched me eat before he ate it himself. "Have you known Miza and them longer than what you remember, too?" Snitch asked while he cocked his head and studied me.
I bit back a small sigh before I slowly nodded. "Yes," I said, my voice barely above a whisper before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "I've known them as long as Sky has known them."
"Have you been to Ilrion?" Snitch asked while he cocked his head and studied me. He frowned and furrowed his brows while he cocked his head and studied me. "That's what the world of the Gods is called, right?"
I bit back a small laugh and nodded. "Yes, that is what the place where the Gods live is called," I said, "and yes, I have been there before." I took a bite of my food and cleared my throat. "I have been there a few times, actually."
"Really?" Snitch asked and stared at me with wide eyes, and I nodded in confirmation. "Why?" He furrowed his brows and cocked his head further to the side, pressing his lips into a thin line. "Isn't it considered dangerous for us to go there?"
I bit back a small snort and slowly nodded. "It is," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "And Sky wasn't the only one to be blessed by a God..."
"Wait." Snitch furrowed his brows further and frowned while he continued to study me. "Are you saying that you have been blessed by a God, too?" he asked, and I nodded in confirmation. "Who?"
"Miza," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, and I couldn't help but look around because I had no idea if he would be there since I had "called" him.
But unfortunately he wasn't there...
Oh...
I made sure to keep my face blank while I ate some more of my food, not knowing why I was thinking that he was going to appear when I called for him, even though I knew that he was busy.
He was the main Councilmember anyway...
"Katie?" Jethro asked, and I looked at him with wide eyes. He frowned and cocked his head while he furrowed his brows and studied me as if he knew what I was thinking. "Are you ok?" he asked, tucking his chest closer to his chest.
I bit back another small sigh and slowly nodded. "I am," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat while my head started to hurt. "I am just getting tired, I think," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
I sighed and shook my head while I rubbed my forehead with a small grimace on my face. "And I am starting to get a headache, but other than that, I am fine. I promise."
