Chapter 10

Jethro pressed his lips into a thin line and narrowed his eyes while he studied me. He didn't say another word, and I could tell that he didn't believe me but didn't want to call out my bluff in front of everyone else.

We were going to talk about this later... I could feel it.

I bit back a small sigh and shook my head, turning my attention back to the boy next to Ben. "So, what's your name?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question, changing the subject.

"Virgel," the boy, Virgel, said. He smiled and waved, and I bit back a small smile while I waved as well. He cocked his head and stared at me with wide eyes. "What's your name?"

"I'm Katie. It's nice to meet you, Virgel."

"He's my brother," Ben said, and I looked at him before I looked at Virgel again, narrowing my eyes ever so slightly while I stared at him, seeing a bit of resemblance of my mate but someone else as well.

Ben cleared his throat and shifted on his feet, and I looked at him again, making sure that my face was blank while I looked at him. "He is also Nathaniel's son..."

Instantly, I looked at Virgel again, my heart skipping a beat before it started to pound hard and fast in my chest, memories of the man that had caused me so much pain and grief filling my mind.

But he had been controlled by Makhala. It wasn't actually him... a soothing voice whispered in my ear. Virgel will be nothing like the man you came in contact with...

"Katie?" Jethro asked when he saw the look on my face, and I looked at him with wide eyes and a pale face. He frowned and narrowed his eyes further while he studied me with his lips pressed into a thin line. "Are you ok?"

I bit back a small sigh and shook my head while I moved a hand across my face and through my hair. "I will be," I said my voice barely above a whisper. I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "So who else is new to this little family of ours?" I asked, changing the subject and praying that I wouldn't be asked what happened and why I froze. I looked at Snitch when I asked that, raising an eyebrow in question.

Ben frowned and looked at Jethro before he looked at me again. He didn't say a word, but I could tell that he wanted to know what was wrong and what happened and why Jethro wanted to know if I was ok.

"Reeves's sister," Snitch said, oblivious about the turmoil that I was feeling, even though his sister did pick up on it but didn't say a word. "Her name is Caroline."

I looked at Snitch with a blank look on my face and slowly blinked. "Reeves has a sister?" I asked, and he rolled his eyes and scowled.

"That's exactly what I said, Katie," he said. He folded his arms across his chest and scowled, narrowing his eyes. "Reeves has a sister, and the two girls we picked up all that time ago were actually his cousins."

"One had a baby, and his name is Owen," a small female voice said, her voice barely above a whisper, and I instantly turned to look at Maddie with wide eyes.

Maddie's cheeks were red, and she didn't look me in the eye. She shifted in her seat and cleared her throat, not saying another word.

"Did you just talk, Katie?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, and instantly, the young female shook her head, no, with her cheeks turning a different shade of red.

"Oh, and Thomas met his mate," Snitch said. He gave his sister a weird look before he looked at me. "His name is Peter."

I slowly nodded and bit the inside of my lip to keep a small smile off of my face. I didn't say a word while I tucked into my meal, silently waiting for Snitch to tell me what happened with Thomas's mate and Sky.

Snitch sighed and slouched in his seat, folding his arms across his chest and pouting. "I lost the bet," he said, earning a curious glance from Jethro. "And I paid Sky fifty dollars."

"Yes, but it was my money," Ben said and narrowed his eyes at the young boy beside me with a small scowl on his face, even though a small smile seemed to appear around the edges of his lips. "Why didn't you tell me that it was going to be used to pay off your bet?"

Snitch shrugged and looked nonchalant while he looked at Ben with a small spark of mischief in his eyes. "I might be a snitch, but I am not that bad, Ben," he said with a small giggle in his voice. "I can keep secrets."

"For a price, Snitch," I said, and Snitch looked at me and grinned. "And you damn well know that you are not as good as you claim to be."

Snitch cocked his head and stared at me with an innocent look in his eyes. He didn't say a word, and I couldn't help but snort and roll my eyes while I scowled and pressed my lips into a thin line.

"You also keep secrets better that deals with your sister and no one else, Snitch," I said, and Snitch looked at her before he looked at me with an innocent look in his eyes. "For example, you hadn't said a word about your sister talking."

Snitch looked at his sister before he looked at me and shrugged. "I do not know what you mean," he said while he shook his head. "She didn't speak just now."

I scowled and narrowed my eyes. "Liar," I said, and he looked at me with an innocent smile on his face. "You know that she said something."

"No," he said and shook his head. "There is a baby named Owen, though. He's the youngest person in the group and not us anymore. Also, Thomas is not allowed to babysit us anymore either."

"That is a complete and total lie, and you know it," Thomas said and walked into the room followed by someone else. He scowled and narrowed his eyes, and Snitch looked at him with a wide innocent look on his face. "Tell her the truth."

"Fine," he said and looked at me. "Toby isn't allowed to babysit us. Thomas does it, even though he spends most of his time with his mate." He pointed at the man behind him, and I looked at them before I looked at him again.

"Toby doesn't babysit you two that much anyway," I said while I pressed my lips into a thin line. "That isn't anything new."

Snitch shrugged and looked nonchalant. "Anyway, Katie, that's Peter. He's Thomas's mate. Peter, this is Katie. She is our Beta and has left for two years to be the Beta of his pack." He pointed at Jethro. "But she is back now to take her position as our Beta again."

I rolled my eyes and pressed my lips into a thin line. I didn't say a word while I ate my food, not knowing if I wanted to either deny or confirm his comment about me staying to take my position as Beta.

Snitch looked at me and frowned, cocking his head to the side. "Right?" he asked, and I paused in eating while I looked at him with a raised eyebrow in question.

"Right what?"

"Are you staying? Are you going to take over your position as Beta?"

I bit back a small sigh and held back a shake of my head, even though a part of me wanted to do that. "Let's just take it day by day, Snitch," I said, not giving him a definite answer while I didn't look at Ben when I felt his gaze on me as if he was afraid of my answer. "Let's just take it day by day."
