chapter three : oh shit
Today we were getting a tour of the ESPN building before we drove out to Arrowhead Stadium to interview some of the star players. Right now our boss, Ben Martin, was showing us the studio where we would be on days that we weren't on the field.
I felt guilty leaving Milo behind, especially since yesterday was his first day with us. He didn't do too well last night sleeping on his pillow and since I couldn't sleep well either, I brought him in my room. He was somewhat potty trained already but he still needed some work. When he slept in my bed with me we both went right to sleep.
"If you think this is huge you should see the headquarters," he joked with a laugh and we followed him to the lounge area where we could eat lunch.
We finished the tour of the place when he brought us into another room to meet the team we would be working with.
"This is the rest of the crew that you'll have with you today and most days that you will be at games - Chase, Paul and Lindsay. Guys this is Katherine and Natalia. Go make some magic happen. Make me proud," he introduced us as he rubbed his hands together.
"Hey guys, I'm Katherine but you can call me Kat," I tell them all as Natalia introduces herself.
"I'm Chase, this is Paul and Lindsay. I'll be helping you with the mic situations and Paul and Lindsay will be working with Natalia. We ready to go?"
"Let's do this," Natalia said.
"Let's roll out," Paul chimed in. "Have you guys ever been to Arrowhead Stadium before?"
"Never," I shake my head.
"You're in for a treat then," Lindsay commented with a smirk.
*
"You weren't kidding," I said after we pulled up and got the equipment out of the car.
Arrowhead Stadium was huge. I had heard that it has some of the best fans because they're the loudest stadium so I was excited to meet the players. I know that they were already done with training camp and were back to practices now.
"Yeah, it's one of the loudest stadium's too," Lindsay says with a smirk as we walk in and I marvel at the stadium as we walk in.
I still wasn't sure why Natalia had such strong hate towards Tyreek. I mean, we don't even know the people and what really happened, yet she was convinced he was a horrible person who needed to be locked up for life. Me on the other hand, wasn't convinced either way and I had no opinion on the subject. All I knew was that he was so damn good on the field and there was a reason why he was nicknamed cheetah. I do know that they are broken up again but that there was an investigation surrounding child abuse from both parents. There was a ton of people disappointed in the fact that the NFL wasn't going to discipline him and they allowed him to come back for the season. As a sports commentator though, unfortunately, we weren't allowed to say our opinion's when we released news like this on ESPN. We had to give the generic statement that we hoped everyone involved was okay.
Walking in, we met with the head coach Andy Reid. We also met with Dave Toub who was the offensive coordinator and Eric Bieniemy as the defensive coordinator.
"Thanks for letting us come here today to interview some of your players," I told coach Andy Reid and he smiled at me through his mustache.
"You're welcome. They know it's all part of the job and they all love ESPN. So it seems as though this will be the first of many times we'll be working with each other," Andy told me and Natalia. "Your boss messaged me last week and told me that you'll be the the one interviewing the players during games."
"Yeah," I told him with a smile. "We're looking forward to it. Your stadium is beautiful."
"Thank you," he smiled at my compliment. "I have to ask because you look so young. How old are you?"
"Twenty-four," I tell him.
"Wow," he shakes his head with a smile. "That's great that you knew what you wanted to be at a young age. You know - you're the same age as our quarterback that you'll be interviewing. I think you guys might get along well since you're the same age," he told me and just as he finished a football was thrown at his back which made him flinch. "Which one of you threw that at me?" He yelled which I held in my laughter as Josie and I shared a look.
"Sorry coach," Tyreek Hill yelled across the field and ran up to get the ball from him.
"Hey, stay here for a minute," Andy told him.
"What's going on coach?" He asks as he rests his arm on Andy Reid's shoulder.
"We have a sports commentator here along with her team from ESPN interviewing some of your teammates. This is Katherine, Natalia, Chase, Paul and Lindsay."
"Oh, nice to meet you all," he says with a smile.
"Nice to meet you too," I tell him and so do the others.
"Am I gonna be one you interview?" He asked me as his eyes lit up.
"Not today, unfortunately," I told him and he fake pouts and puts his hand over his heart.
"I'm hurt," he says dramatically.
"Get the hell out of here," Andy says as pushes his player off him which makes us all laugh and so does Tyreek as he runs away with the football.
"Don't let any of these players push you around," Andy tells me. "You girls deserve to be here and I've seen a few of your interviews with other players. You're good."
"Thank you," I smile at Andy. "That means a lot."
"You're welcome. I need to get back to coaching but just call whichever players at any time over to talk to you."
"Alright," I turn to my crew. "First let's get everything set up and then I'll start calling the players over through out the next couple hours."
"Sounds good," Lindsay said as she got the video camera out of the case and got everything set up as everyone else helped her.
*
Patrick Mahomes was called over and right away my head was flooded with memories from a couple nights ago. His skin on my skin doing a lot more than making out. Grinding on him in the club. And not even putting the two together.
"Wait - your Patrick Mahomes?" I ask as I feel my eyes widen.
His eyes widen as well as recognizes me. I seriously never thought I would see Patrick again. Let alone that he was the Patrick Mahomes.
"Uh, yeah," he laughs nervously. "I didn't want to give you a choice to turn me down so I just wanted to be a normal guy for a night."
"Is there a problem?" Lindsay asks with a slight attitude. "Do you guys know each other or something?"
"Just give us five minutes guys and then I'll be all yours," Patrick tells my crew nicely and they leave.
I see Natalia's eyes widen off to the side as she starts to come to the same conclusion that I had come to. Patrick Mahomes was the guy I slept with the other night.
Oh shit.
"I had sex with you and you're in a relationship," I started to freak out more and hyperventilate and I could tell Patrick was trying to stay calm. "Oh my God," I said as I sat down on the bench.
"I swear I'm not," he told me in a hushed and calm voice. "Brittany and I broke up about a month ago. The media just hasn't caught on yet."
"Are you sure? How can I be sure you're telling the truth?" I asked still panicked.
"Ay, Travis, come here for minute," Patrick called out to his teammate and my eyes widened as he jogged over here.
Travis Kelce was coming over here. He was huge.
"What's up, bro?"
"Are Brittany and I still together?"
"Nah," Travis shook his head as he gave a loud boisterous laugh. "Didn't you guys break up like a month ago?"
"See?" Patrick gave me a small smile. "I promise, you didn't wreck my relationship."
"Oh shit," Travis' eyes widened in recognition as he turned to look at me. "Your the girl from the club."
"Yeah," I nodded my head as my heart rate started to calm down. "That's me."
"You did good bro," he pats Patrick's chest before leaving with a smile on his face.
"Are you okay with us working together?" He asks.
"Yeah. I just didn't think that the Patrick I slept with was Patrick fucking Mahomes and I didn't think I'd ever see you again," I told him and I saw slight flash of hurt in his eyes. "Just letting you know - I never do that," I tell him because I didn't want him to think I had sex with random guys all the time.
"What?" He asked as his eyebrows furrowed.
"I don't normally have one night stands with random guys I've never met before."
"Oh," he smirks slightly and runs his fingers through his hair and I couldn't help but think about how a few nights ago I did that.
Snap out of it.
"It's alright. I don't regret it. Do you?" He asked, concerned.
"No," I blurt out which made him smile and I smiled too.
"So, are you new to the city?"
"Yeah," I nodded my head. "Actually the day we met was my first day here."
"Cool, welcome to Kansas City. Where did you live before?"
"Thanks and I lived in Los Angeles," I smile as I think about the city I lived beforehand.
"That's dope," he said as he let out a small laugh. "I better let you get back to work and I should, uh, get back to work. Were cool though?"
"Yeah, it's all good," I promised him with a smile. "Thanks."
"Alright guys, we can start now," I tell the group and they come back as Chase helped me with the mic and Natalia made the call.
"Camera's rolling in 3....2....1."
"Hi everyone," I greet anyone whose watching. "Today I am here with the Chief's quarterback - Patrick Mahomes. Patrick, what are you looking forward to in the new season?" I asked Patrick. "Is there anything that's going to be different?"
"For sure," he let out a laugh as he ran his fingers through his hair. "Not all seasons are the same but this team has been practicing really hard and we've been grinding, bringing it, everyday. I'm really proud of my boys and just excited to see how far we'll go."
"In that devastating loss from last season what did you learn from it and can we expect a Super Bowl this year for the Chief's?" I asked him.
"We definitely learned a lot from that game after replaying the tapes and studying everything. Hopefully we'll be able to go to the Super Bowl this year. That's always the goal."
"Can you tell us a little more about what the team has stressed in practices since last season?"
"Yeah," he nods his head as he rests his hands on his hips. "We've been making sure to get our players more open so that I have more people I can throw the ball to. Some teams have caught onto the fact that I really look for certain players so we want to kind of change it up a bit. We've been tryin' to spend as much time in the weight room as possible too and just going over plays from last season and where we went wrong so we can try to do better," he said and I could hear a slight Texan accent.
"Thank you, Patrick," I tell him with a smile as I wrap up our interview.
"Thank you," he smiles back and rushes back to the field and we finish.
He nods his head with a smile and leaves to go back to practice. I still can't wrap around my head the fact that the Patrick I slept with was Patrick Mahomes. I mean what are the odds that it was him?
"Alright next is De'Anthony Thomas," I tell the group and I call him over.
"Ay, you watch the Oregon Duck's football games?" He asked with a big smile as I told him I was a big fan of his.
"I don't miss a game," I told him. "Though, I have to admit its not the same without you, Mariota and Chip Kelly."
"Oh man," he rubs his hands together as he got jazzed up. "I miss those guys."
"I actually got to interview Mariota once and he's probably one of the nicest guys I've ever interviewed."
"Yeah, he's cool. We were like the dream team," he tells me as we reminisce about his college days.
"You were though. I mean you guys brought your game every night you played. And I loved Chip Kelly's coaching style of having you guys play fast."
"Ay coach," De'Anthony calls out to Andy Reid. "I think I love this woman. She can talk sports all day long. I love it!"
We all laugh at his comment and I notice that Patrick looked at us for a minute with a look on his face before he threw the football to Travis.
"Alright, I see you," De'Anthony told me with a laugh. "Let's go with this interview."
The rest of the interviews went great and I loved interviewing De'Anthony Thomas. His sense of humor was great and though he was serious he also acted like a little kid about the sport he loved. I wasn't lying to him when I told him I was a fan of his.
*
"Well, that was awkward," Natalia let out a cough as both of us busted out laughing.
"Holy shit, that was so awkward! And I ended up freaking out? Like what even..."
"I would have too," Natalia admitted. "I mean like holy shit you slept with him! You lucky bitch," she says.
I let out a laugh as I get Milo's dog food ready for him since it was time for him to eat. Since we both had full-time jobs, we had found a dog watcher who can take him out on walks a couple times a day and play with him for a while. I felt bad that he would have to be alone for a while but hopefully it would get easier as he gets older. We were now back in our apartment after having spent the rest of the time in the studio. Today was a full day of work and while it was awkward with Patrick at first - in some weird way I'm actually relieved to know that the guy I slept with wasn't just someone I'll never see again.

^ i thought this post was interesting. definitely a good read on tyreek's situation.
the reason i'm not having my character have a view point on it is because she literally loves sports. she looks at the player and what they do on the field. my character is going to have her moments where she's conflicted on the subject because again - she feels like she's not getting the whole story. i know he can be a pretty hot topic but i'm by no means putting this in to start an argument with anyone.
i hope you all can look at both view points and see why my character is going to have a hard time of it. just know it's all part of the story and my character's growth.
