chapter four : fate or coincidences
I was busy today watching old games of the Chief's from last season as I tried to get a feel for the players and how they played for the past two hours. I studied their offense and defense teams as I made notes about some of the plays that stood out to me and some of the fumbles they had.
One thing that stood out to me the most?
Patrick rarely got any dropped interceptions.
Many compared him to Tom Brady but I liked how humble he was and just brushed aside those comments and put the focus back on his teammates. It was refreshing to see that the fame that he had hasn't gotten to him so far. Hopefully it stayed that way.
After a couple of hours, I decided to get up as I took off my blue light glasses that I always wore when using my laptop and got Milo's leash and called him over.
"Want to go to the dog park?" I ask him as his tail wags and I get the bags for him as well and my things as we leave the apartment.
Natalia had to run to the pharmacy for some medication so I sent her a text and let her know where I would be with Milo. His new collar had come in a couple days ago from Etsy and it looked so good on him. I had bought him an olive green one because Natalia and I thought the blue would look odd on him. I made a stop at Smoothie King before going to the dog park and bought an Island Impact smoothie that had pineapple, mango, papaya juice blend, apple pineapple juice blend and protein blend.

"Fancy seeing you here," I hear a voice behind me which freaked me out and made me jump a little before I turned around and saw who it was.
"Oh my God," I laughed as I saw Patrick at the dog park and he looked at me as he laughed as well.
"This is some weird shit going on," he commented, equally surprised.
"You're telling me," I laughed as I let Milo off the leash and he right away went running to play with the other dogs.
"Are you sure you aren't stalking me?" He teased as he looked at me with an amused smile and I scoffed.
"Oh please, don't tell me you think that highly of yourself," I replied, joking with a smile. "This is so weird. You have dogs?"
"Yeah," he nodded his head as he pointed to the two dogs that had gone up to Milo now. "You see those two? They're mine. Silver and Steel."
"Cute," I let out a small aw as I saw them playing with Milo. "Listen, I'm sorry about the other day," she started off. "It was totally unprofessional of me. I just didn't think that you were you," I said and made a face as I scrunched my nose up and laughed slightly as I closed my eyes. "That came out weird. I just didn't think you were the Patrick Mahomes is what I meant."
He laughed slightly and ran his fingers through his hair.
"I get it and don't worry about it. I didn't think it was you either."
"You know who I am?" I asked, confused.
"Yeah," he let out a laugh. "I watch ESPN religiously and always see your interviews. You're pretty famous for being young."
"I don't know about famous," I scoffed at the word as I had never liked it. "I'm just doing my job."
"Just like I'm doing my job," he teased back as he leaned in a little bit and looked at me.
"Point taken," I laughed.
"So, is that one your dog?" He asked pointing to Milo.
"Technically yes," I told him.
"What does that mean?" He asked as he took a sip of water.
"My roommate bought him the day after we came here and surprised me. So I guess, he technically is mine too," I shrugged my shoulders.
"He's a cutie," he smiled at me and I smiled back.
"Thanks. I already have about thirty pictures on my phone of him."
"Welcome to the mom life of dogs," he let out a cute laugh. "Half of the pictures on my phone are of those two crazy dogs."
"They're cuties. Are they pit bull's?"
"Yeah," he nodded his head with a smile. "Well, technically, Silver is a cane corso but she also has some pit in her."
"I love pit bull's. I hate that they get such a bad rep," I frowned.
"I do too. Sometimes I lie to people and tell them that they aren't pit's because I can see the fear in their eyes. Steel and Silver are very lovable dogs."
"Aw," I said as I saw how playful Steel and Silver were with Milo. "They're surprisingly being really careful with him too and not rough housing."
"Yeah, I think they know he's a puppy," he said with a proud smile on his face. "How old is he?"
"He's three months," I commented. "He's actually starting puppy training this week."
"Oof, that's gotta be fun," he teased. "Good luck with that."
"Yeah, thanks," I replied sarcastically and looked at the time on my phone. "Oh shit, I didn't realize I've been here for two hours," I laughed slightly. "I should probably get going. Milo - come here!" I called out to our puppy and he came trotting over with his tongue out to the side slightly as his ears flopped. Ugh, the cutest thing ever.
When he came over along with Patrick's dogs, Patrick bent down and started petting him as Milo climbed onto him slightly and licked his jawline which made both of us laugh.
Correction - that's the cutest thing ever.
"Mind if I get a picture of you two?" I asked a little awkward.
"No problem," he smiled as he held Milo and smiled as I took the picture.
"Thanks," I grinned and pet his dogs as well. "They're such softies."
"Told ya," he smiled at me. "I've gotta get a picture of you with my dogs."
I put my arms around both dogs and just as he was getting ready to take the picture, Steel licked my cheek as I gasped from the shock.
"Not cool man, not cool," Patrick shakes his head playfully at his dog as I laugh and Steel continues to lick me.
"Your just so handsome," I tell Steel. "Don't listen to your dad. Thank you for the kisses," I tell him as I kiss his head and he turns his head to me and tilts it to the side.
I give Steel one last kiss and give Silver one as well before I hook the leash on Milo's collar.
"Hey, before you go-" Patrick started sounding unsure.
"Yeah?" I ask him as my eyebrows furrow.
"I didn't get a chance to ask you other day and I thought it might come across as unprofessional of me but can I get your number?" He asked me nervously.
"I mean technically we don't really work with each other," I told him and he let out what seemed to be a sigh of relief. "Do you have your phone?"
"Yeah," he nodded his head and got it out from his pocket.
I told him my number and I got his as well.
"We should hang out sometime," he told me.
"I'd like that," I gave him a small smile. "I better get going. See you later?"
"Yeah," he smiled back as called our dogs and left together as I sent him the picture of him with Milo and he sent the picture of me with his dogs.
*
I saw later on when I clicked on my Instagram account that Patrick requested to follow me and I accepted with a small smile on my face. I kept my profile on private because I didn't like random people I didn't know follow me.
I clicked on Patrick's profile and followed him back since his was public and I noticed a picture he just posted today. It was of his dogs at the dog park and I couldn't help but smile and click like on the picture as I had posted the picture of Milo at the dog park today too as he was playing with a stick and begging me to throw it for him which I did.
It seemed like for some reason it had been a long day and was just one of those days where everything went on forever.
"Talia?" I call out to her when I hear the front door jiggle.
"Hey," my roommate and best friend greets me with Chick-Fil-A bags. "Figured we could have Chick-Fil-A tonight. Is that alright with you?"
"Yes," I groaned as I grabbed the bag which made Natalia laugh. "Thank you. I was starting to get hangry."
"Uh oh. That's never good," she teased.
As soon as Natalia came back, Milo came rushing over and it just looked so cute how he was running against the hardwood floor.
"Guess who I saw at the dog park today?" I told her as we began eating.
"I have no idea. Who?"
"Patrick."
"Shut up. Are you serious?" She asked shocked as she ate her mac and cheese and I nodded my head.
"Yeah. It was pretty crazy. But he's really nice."
"Aw, you like him," Talia said with more of a teasing tone but also serious which made me widen my eyes.
"No, I don't," I said quickly and she smirked at me.
"Uh huh. I'm calling it now you guys will end up together."
"Whatever," I scoffed, not believing her.
Just then my phone rang and I noticed it was my mom so I immediately answered it.
"Hey sweetie, how are you liking it in Kansas City so far?" My mom asked over the phone as I put her on speaker and started eating my Chick-Fil-A dinner that Natalia brought back, as it was both of our favorites since moving here. She ordered me their waffle fries, spicy chicken sandwich and their nuggets along with lemonade.
"Hey mom, I actually really love it here so far. I hope you guys can come visit soon."
"I know, I want to. I just need to find a good time that works with your schedule. Dad wants to talk to you," my mom said which made my shoulders grow stiff.
"Please don't put him on the phone," I begged her. "I really don't want to talk to him right now."
I felt bad that my mom was in the middle whenever my dad and I were arguing. I never really had the best relationship with my dad and had called it from a young age that he was a narcissist. He was hard to live with and I always felt like I was never good enough.
"Alright sweetie. But you guys are going to have to talk at some point," she told me.
"Yeah, but not now," I tell her. "Tell me about you though. How have you been? I miss you."
My mom was my best friend. I was closest to her out of both my parents. What we go through with my dad definitely helps bring us closer. My older sister doesn't even speak to my dad as he stopped talking to her because he didn't agree with her college choices. Getting my dad to apologize about his wrongdoings was like pulling teeth - it was hard. I just didn't have time for his pettiness anymore if he was going to be that way.
"I miss you too," she tells me. "Things have been okay here. I use work to keep busy and I have lunch with my girlfriends at least once a week. Milo looks like a little cutie," she coos.
I begin to put my lime rice, corn and chicken in my tortilla as I take my first bite.
"He's so cute! You and Sam need to come visit me soon," I tell her. "I'm glad that you're doing good and still get together with your friends."
"How's Natalia? Are you girls looking out for each other?" She asks.
"Hey, I'm going to put you on speaker really quick since Natalia is here too," I say as I pull my phone away from my ear and press the audio button and then the speaker. "You still there mom?"
"I'm here. How are you Natalia?"
"I'm good, Jane," she greets my mom as her look brightens up talking to her. "Missing your infamous monkey bread."
My mom laughs at her comment as she loves compliments always and is easily flattered.
"Well, next time I see you I'll have to make some."
"What?" I asked shocked. "I try to get you to make some for me and you say you don't have enough time but with Nat you give in so easily?"
"She loves me better," she said in a sing song voice.
"No," my mom tsk'd at Natalia's answer and I could picture her shaking her head. "I love you all equally."
That was the thing about my mom with any of our friends - once we introduced them to the family, my mom treated them like her own and in a way looked after them It was the opposite of my dad who couldn't care less if he was rude or not. He never saw himself as being rude to anyone which is where the narcissistic behavior comes into play.
"I'll have to send you my work schedule tonight that way you'll have it."
"Sounds good," my mom told me. "I should let you girls go and let you finish eating your dinner. I love you both."
"Love you," we say together as I hang up the phone.
"You okay?" Natalia asked in concern as she noticed my silence after my mom hung up.
"Yeah, fine," I reassured her as I gave her a strained smile. "My mom said that my dad wanted to speak with me on the phone but I couldn't do it."
"Shit," Natalia murmured as she got out the alcohol and poured my favorite glass of wine which made me laugh slightly as I thanked her and took a sip. "Have you talked to him since then?"
"Nope," I tell her. "And I don't really know what to say to him either. I'm just sick of his behavior to me, my sister and mom but I don't want to cut him out of my life either like my sister did. Does that even make any sense?"
Natalia has been there for me through it all. She's seen my dad's bad sides and my dad's good sides. He's never physically abused any of us but his pettiness is too much sometimes and really gets me down. It was one of the reasons why I don't have high expectations with him.
"I get it," she shrugs her shoulders. "I may not agree with it but I get it. I do. He's your dad. I just don't understand his behavior at all."
"He's a narcissist. We're not supposed to understand them," I say as I let out a small scoff. "I'm jealous of your relationship with your dad."
Natalia had the perfect family. Yeah, they argued sometimes here and there but they all loved each other and she had a great relationship with both her parents. Natalia could be hard to understand sometimes to some people but we understood each other. We have been best friends ever since college and like my mom, her family had taken me into theirs and treated me like family. Even though I didn't have the greatest relationship with my dad, he was still my dad and I knew at some point I was gonna have to talk to him again.
I just didn't know when.
