Chapter 3

When Beth had arrived at the house, Wyatt was placing a bag in the trunk of a car.

"Good morning, Beth," he said as he reached for her bag and placed it in the trunk as well. "You and Katherine may not need these, but it's better to have them just in case." His smile was polite as he slammed the trunk closed.

Beth had awakened excited at the prospect of taking a trip with Wyatt. She had grand visions of them connecting like they had the night they had met five years earlier. However, learning that Katherine was going with them quickly nipped that in the bud.

"Are you ready?" Wyatt asked as he turned to look her over.

Beth nodded as she rubbed her hands on her thighs nervously. In an attempt to play it casual she had worn a pair of faded blue jeans and a cotton t-shirt, and she was glad to see Wyatt similarly dressed.

"I'm ready," Katherine said as she glided down the steps towards the car with Kay watching from the door of the house. Due to all of the visitors touring the house during the day, the family used the back of the house for their main entrance. It preserved the illusion of the past for the public that visited.

Wyatt held open the front passenger side door for Katherine as Beth opened the back door for herself. She could have told him that she suffered from terrible motion sickness, but Beth was afraid that it would sound like she was making an excuse to sit next to him.

"It's only about a forty-five-minute drive into town," Wyatt assured them as he took the driver's side and cranked the engine.

The drive was alright at first, but eventually, when they hit the outskirts of the city, the stop and go traffic made Beth start to feel nauseous. Trying to focus on something else, she thought about Mave's phone call with their Uncle Bryce that morning.

Mave was seriously crushing on Wyatt, or she was pretending to at least. Mave had a habit of pretending to like a guy if she thought Beth did too in an effort to try and draw Beth out, but Beth had been through it enough times not to take the bait.

Mave had put Uncle Bryce on speakerphone and asked what he knew about a Wyatt Ramsey.

"Southerner, a good trial lawyer," was all Bryce had said.

Beth had had to smother a laugh at Mave's evident frustration. She had tried to ask him about personal stuff, attempting to jog his memory about the fact their mother, Alice, had taught him and perhaps Aunt Grace had as well.

"Did they?" was his only response.

Uncle Bryce was a man of few words, who played his cards close. If he knew more about Wyatt, he wasn't going to share that information with Mave.

Beth, who had turned pale with sickness, gave a half-smile at the memory that ended up more like a grimace.

"Are you alright?" Wyatt asked, looking at her reflection in the rearview mirror of the car.

"Fine," she said as she kept her eyes focused on what little road she could see out of the windshield in front of her.

Beth was relieved when Wyatt pulled into the parking lot of a little coffee shop. "Let's stop for a few minutes," he suggested.

"Coffee, good idea!" Katherine agreed, looking over her shoulder at Beth with a smile.

Wyatt opened Beth's door for her, eyeing her as she stood on wobbly legs. "Are you sure you're alright?" he asked.

"Fine," she said again with a slight nod.

"Would you like some coffee?" he asked.

The idea of eating or drinking anything made Beth's stomach turn. "N-no," she stammered, biting her bottom lip to keep from throwing up on his shoes.

When they entered the coffee shop, Beth found a chair and sank into its plush depths, watching as Katherine and Wyatt walked up to the counter to order. She had to admire how well they looked together. They were both tall and dark, and they seemed well suited. Beth was unsure what they were to each other. Were they friends, lovers, or only mild acquaintances.

Wyatt said something to Katherine that made her laugh, and Beth moved the bar to friends at the very least. Closing her eyes, in part to block out Wyatt and Katherine's image, she willed the room to stop spinning. There couldn't be that much further to go until they reached Charleston, but the traffic was getting worse.

"Beth," Katherine said as she sat across from her, "would you mind if I rode the rest of the way in the back seat? I wouldn't mind stretching my legs out a little."

Beth opened her eyes, noticing that Wyatt was at the register paying for the coffee.

"Is it that obvious?" she laughed, and Katherine blushed. "I know you're more comfortable in the front seat with those long legs of yours." Beth smiled.

"Wyatt said that you might be suffering from a touch of car-sickness. I think he is trying not to embarrass you," she explained. "I'm a horrible liar, and he knows it."

They both looked at his broad back as he put creamer and sugar in his coffee.

Beth felt her heart sink at the fact that Wyatt would know that Katherine was a horrible liar. It must mean that they knew a good deal about each other, and that bumped their relationship from friends to possible lovers.

"I would appreciate riding in the front seat, thank you." Beth accepted, knowing if she didn't, she would most likely hurl in the car before they reached their destination.

Wyatt sat across from them and handed Beth water. "Here, this is for the road."

"It's all fixed, Wyatt. I'll ride the rest of the way in the back," Katherine gave a brilliant smile.

"Katherine?" Beth asked, liking the woman even though she could be Wyatt's lover. "What do you do for a living?"

"Me?" Katherine looked shocked that Beth had asked her. "Nothing, why?"

"Have you ever thought of modeling? You have the face and figure for it?" Beth smiled. "I can see you on the Paris runways."

"And what would you know about modeling?" Wyatt asked with an amused expression.

Beth shot him a death stare, and he choked on his coffee. "Sorry, that came out wrong, didn't it?"

"Yes, it did," Beth said from between clenched teeth.

"I remember telling you once that you were beautiful, and it still stands," Wyatt reminded her.

Beth blushed at the reminder.

"Wait, you two know each other?" Katherine asked, shocked.

"We met once a long time ago," Wyatt explained before continuing with their previous conversation. "I simply mean to ask, that as a history major, how would you know about modeling as a career, better?" he asked as he sat down in a chair opposite Beth.

"A little," Beth conceded. "My aunt is a former model turned agent, and my uncle is a photographer." Beth turned her attention back to Katherine. "I could get you an introduction if you like. Aunt Laura is always looking for talent. I might even be able to talk Uncle Davis into taking a few headshots for you. I am his favorite niece. Although I think he tells us all that."

"Your Uncle is Davis Stevens, isn't he? And your aunt in Laura Wren, right?" Katherine looked giddy as she connected the dots.

"Yes," Beth nodded, wondering what was so exciting about her aunt and uncle.

"Are there any other famous family members?" Wyatt asked, sounding almost bored, and Beth had to admit that his tone hurt a little.

Beth cracked open the water and took a sip, licking the excess off her lips, missing Wyatt's eyes follow the movement of her tongue as she played with the label on the bottle. She never thought of her family as famous. It was just who they were and what they did for a living.

"Ummm, my grandmother was Elizabeth Stevens." Beth offered.

"Beth, Elizabeth, that's who you're named for?" Wyatt asked.

Beth nodded, tearing up a little at the thought of her grandmother.

"You look like her," Wyatt said, letting his gaze run over Beth's face.

Katherine looked between the two of them, watching the interaction without saying a word.

"I think she would have liked you," Beth said with a sad smile.

"Why?" Wyatt asked, taking a sip of his coffee as he leaned back into his seat with an amused smile.

Beth held up her water with a smile. "Because you're a gentleman. She always said that gentlemen were hard to find."

"So you're willing to help make Katherine a famous model?" he asked, changing the subject as if it made him uncomfortable.

"No, I'm willing to get her an introduction. I can't make her anything," Beth said softly. It felt as if he was trying to bait her, and she was at a loss as to why he was suddenly so hostile.

"I would love it if you're willing," Katherine jumped in, shooting Wyatt a look that clearly told him to shut up.

"Sure," Beth said with a nod.

Katherine changed the subject after that, talking about restaurants in Charleston and what might be a good option for lunch. They finished their coffee and headed back towards the car. Beth got in the front, and the last fifteen minutes of the trip was conducted in silence.

Beth was at a loss as to why Wyatt was upset with her. Did he think she was name dropping her family? That hadn't been what she had intended to do. She had only wanted to help Katherine.

She wasn't sure why she thought Katherine needed help, but something told her she did.
