Chapter 27 (The End)

Beth's family had arrived as River Moss, and Wyatt's mother was down from New York. The majority of the family was staying in Charleston, but Wyatt's mother, her parents, and Mave were staying at River Moss with her, Wyatt, his father, and Kay.

The last few weeks had given time for Beth to talk to her family one on one, and she had learned a few things in the process. The most important one was that they were all happy for her and didn't resent the way she and Wyatt had married without them. She had discovered that Mason and Cassie had done the same thing between rehearsals for a play in which they were starring, Caleb had married Norah and hadn't told anyone for years, in fact, the majority of them had kept their relationships private until it was forced out into the open one way or another. Mason had assured Beth she was only keeping with family tradition and that they didn't want to know any of the juicy details anyway. Then he had asked if it meant he could get the friends and family discount next time he wanted to film at River Moss.

After her parents adjusted to the idea of their daughter being a Mrs. and not a Miss, they were happy to welcome Wyatt into the family. They had had a serious conversation, where they had told Beth how proud they were that she had followed her heart.

One thing that was agreed upon by everyone was that since Elizabeth had died, they had lost their rudder, she had been their guide and the one to keep them all on the right path, and that they needed to work harder on being a family.

Mave, on the other hand, that one was harder. It was early morning on the day of the wedding, and Beth had snuck into Mave's room and awakened her just before sunrise. The majority of her issues, Beth realized, stemmed from her relationship with her sister, and she needed to straighten it all out before the wedding.

Mave hadn't objected as Beth waited for her to get dressed. Then Beth led the way through the quiet house and out towards Mary's cabin. Something in her gut told her that was where they needed to talk.

Wyatt had given her the key, and as she opened the door, Beth felt a sense of calm settle over her. Something told her everything was going to be alright, and she didn't have to try to figure out all of her problems today, tomorrow, or even in a year.

"Why are we here?" Mave asked, looking around the room as early morning light filtered through the windows.

"We needed a quiet place to talk. I don't want to get married today without you on my side." Beth turned to look at her sister.

"Why not, you did the first time?" Mave said as she crossed her arms.

"I know, and I'm sorry about that." Beth frowned.

"Why did you do it? I get that you didn't have to tell me and that it was about you and not me or even the family, but we used to be so close? What happened to that?" Mave asked.

"We grew apart. I went to Georgia, and you went to L.A." Beth knew now was the time too be honest. "When was the last time you shared anything personal with me, Mave, or anyone for that matter?"

Mave looked startled at the question.

"I don't know who you date, how you're handling being an actress, what your end goal with it is, or how you feel about anything. Whenever we are together, it is about me. It's always about me needing a new job, needing a boyfriend, needing a haircut. Why?"

"Because I don't want anyone to realize that I'm a failure! I don't know what I'm doing, and I'm far from having what I want in life!" Mave screwed her lips up tight after her outburst.

"I feel the same way. I have no clue what I want, except for Wyatt. I knew I wanted him when I met him five years ago." Beth admitted. "I got my degree, and then I started doing my best to figure it all out, which I am failing miserably by the way."

"But you have Wyatt," Mave's smile was bittersweet.

"I do, but you don't have Sam?" Beth watched as Mave blushed at her comment. "I knew the minute I met Wyatt exactly how you have always felt about Sam all of these years."

"But you knew about Sam. Why didn't you tell me about Wyatt?"

"Wyatt and I had a lot to figure out, well Wyatt had a lot to figure out just like Sam does. I didn't want you forcing the issue or trying to play matchmaker. It's a habit you have gotten into over the years."

Mave bit her lip, realizing the Beth was right.

"I'm expected to be the outgoing one, the outrageous one, and perhaps in my attempt to maintain that image, I go a little over the top." Mave conceded.

"Which you do." Beth agreed with a grin. "I'm expected to be the calm and grounded one, the one who never makes waves, and maybe I overplay it," Beth conceded.

"Except with Wyatt, he was your break out role," Mave teased as the tension between them lifted

"And today, while I'm walking down the aisle, being the center of attention, you can stand in the shadows," Beth suggested.

"I can do that." Mave nodded her agreement. "Will you tell me about how you and Wyatt met?" Mave asked, looking around the cabin.

"Mary," Beth nodded towards the photograph on the wall.

"Who's Mary?" Mave asked as she walked towards the image.

"That's our many greats-grandmother on our mother's side. I was researching our family tree in college, and I tracked her down. I came to see the place that she had lived, and Wyatt happened to be giving a tour that day."

"Really, that's how you two met?" Mave seemed stunned. "Our great-grandmother was a slave?" she asked.

"She was Wyatt's family's slave. It's a lot to take in, isn't it?"

Mave nodded as she looked at the photograph. "Does Mom know?"

"No, I haven't told anyone but you and Wyatt."

Mave turned to her with a smile. "So Wyatt noticed you across the crowded room?"

"Something like that..." Beth told her an edited version of the story, leaving out the fact that she had slept in his arms, and he had kept the quilt. They kept talking until the first visitors showed up, and then they returned to the main house for breakfast.

Mave stayed by her side all day, making sure it was a day that was all about Beth as she helped her with everything she needed.

Then it was time.

Beth's dress was simple. It was a beautiful white sundress with a flowing skirt and capped sleeves. Beth had put her hair up and wore a crown of flowers while keeping her make-up to a minimum.

Her mother and Mave walked with her down the stairs and into the main hall with both its doors open, one in the front and one in the back. The chairs for the guests were set up on the lawn between the river and the house and were full of all of the people she loved most in the world.

As they reached the hall, her mother and Mave both kissed her cheek then went to join everyone else on the lawn. Wyatt stepped up behind her and placed a kiss in her shoulder where it met her neck and Beth sighed. It was her perfect moment and she closed her eyes, hoping she would remember it forever.

"You look beautiful," he said in a wavering voice that was full of emotion. He felt it too.

Beth turned to look at him with a calm smile. He was wearing a navy suit and a lighter blue tie.

"You look handsome," Beth returned,

"Should we go get married again?" he asked.

"Yes, please." Beth nodded and let him lead her out of the door and into her future.

The ceremony was short, and when it was time for the kiss, there were plenty of catcalls and whistling that made Beth blush.

There was no need for anyone to rush away because the post-wedding dinner was to be held in the dining room with fireworks to follow. Wyatt had told Beth that Kay was more than happy to host such an illustrious family in her home, it had pleased her so much that she hadn't batted an eye at Mary Alice staying in the house.

Beth and Wyatt were passed around and hugged by everyone until they reached Mary Alice, who had kept a low profile since she arrived.

"Everyone agrees, you make a lovely bride," she said as she hugged Beth.

"Thank you, does that include my grandmothers?" Beth asked.

"Elizabeth, yes. She's glad the family has found their way again, and she knows that the bond will gain strength again over the coming months. Mary couldn't be here, but she's on her way." Mary Alice reached out and lightly touched Beth's flat tummy. "She'll be here before you know it." Then she gave a contented sigh, ignoring Wyatt and Beth's stunned looks. "It's been pleasant being back here after all of these years."

"Mary Alice, I need an explanation," Beth said, placing her hand over her stomach.

"Sometimes, we have the chance to come back to those we love in a different form," was all she said before she wandered off.

"Wyatt?" Beth asked in a shaky voice as she looked up at him.

"Do you think it's possible?" His voice cracked.

"Possibly," Beth nodded.

They looked at each other and grinned as Wyatt placed his hand on Beth's stomach, and she put her hand over his.

"I was wrong," he said. "This is the best thing!"
