One Step

~Sean

The day was finally here. May twenty-second, the day I was finally going to marry the man of my dreams. "You ready for the big day?" Wade asked as I combed my recently dyed emerald green hair. Wade and Bob had flown in as soon as they could, which happened to be yesterday. Bob was spending the day with Mark away from home while I was here with Wade. Not that I minded of course, despite the numerous times I teased him. "Yeah, but...." I trailed off, swallowing the lump that rose in my throat. "There's something I need to do first." "What do you mean?" Wade frowned. "I'll be back soon." I promised him as I walked to my car and drove away to the police station.

"I'm here to see Signe Hansen." I told the officer at the desk. He nodded and led me to her cell, allowing me inside while he waited by the door. She looked awful, her long dirty blond hair tangled and greasy, her skin ghostly white, and her body so skinny that I could see her ribs under the orange jumpsuit. Her head was bowed like she was praying when I entered and sat down in front of her at the light gray table. "Hey." I greeted her softly. Her head instantly shot up, her eyes wide, wild, and bloodshot with bags underneath. "You!" She snarled, slamming her hand cuffed fists down on the table, causing me to jump. "You locked me in here!" "I-I didn't make you almost murder someone." I stammered, taken aback by her rage. "It's always my fault, everything's my fault." She muttered under her breath. "Is there anything I can do to help you?" I asked gently. She remained silent, glaring at me with her hazel eyes filled with hate. "Well....there is one thing." All of the anger melted away, replaced with a sudden calmnessthat almost creeped me out more. "Yeah?" "Stand up. I want to see you properly." Her voice was barely more than a whisper. Hesitantly I obliged. I flinched as she to got up and began circling me, pity in her eyes. "If I can't have you," she paused behind me. "No one can." Before I could react, I felt the cold metal of the handcuffs dig into my neck, cutting off my air as I tried to call for help. "P-please." I choked out, black spots beginning to dance in my vision. "Dump Mark and marry me." She hissed in my ear. I couldn't even form words as she tightened her grip. Even if I could, she would kill me nonetheless. My lungs were searing with pain like they were being burnt alive as my legs buckled and gave out, causing me to fall to my knees, a bright white light replacing the black. Mark was standing in front of me, hand outstretched as he smiled. He looked like he did back when I first met him. "R-raven....black ha-ir with choc-olate...bro-wn eyes." I gasped in short breaths, tears sliding down my cheeks as I reached up to touch his face. "Let go." I heard Signe and Mark's voice say in unison. So I did. I let the light encompass me completely in its blissful painless embrace, the last thing I heard was a pair of footsteps and Signe's crazed laugh.

"Have you seen Sean?!?" I frantically ran up to Wade. The wedding was supposed to have started nearly an hour ago, but he was still nowhere in sight. I then noticed that his eyes were red and puffy from crying. "Mark...." He trailed off, struggling to find the right words to say. "What?" I felt my heart drop into my stomach. Did Sean decide against the wedding? Did he not love me anymore? Was it something I did? "It's Signe." He blurted. "Sean left promising that he'd be back soon but he didn't come back so I called the police and-" "Woah, slow down." I instructed. Wade took a deep breath before continuing. "Sean left about two hours ago, he didn't tell me where, just that he'd be back soon. When the wedding supposed to have started, I assumed that he came here early or something, but he wasn't here. So, I called him and he didn't answer, so I panicked and called the police." "And?" I prompted impatiently. "They found him, but...Signe killed him." Instantly the world seemed to freeze. No. No way. He can't be, we're supposed to get married, adopt kids together someday, do YouTube together. "No, you're wrong." I rapidly shook my head, tears springing into my eyes. Was this a sick joke? "I already told Bob, we're going to see him now." Wade added. "He's not dead, stop pretending that he is!" I shouted in his face, tears freely streaming down my face. Everyone in the pews turned to stare at me, but I didn't care. Wade said nothing, just walked solemnly to his car where Bob was already sitting in the passenger seat. He opened his mouth to say something to me, then wisely shut it again. The entire car ride was tense and silent, the joking mood that used to exist completely gone. "Where's Sean?" I demanded as soon as I ran into the building. "Are you family?" He asked. "I was supposed to marry him an hour ago." My voice cracked with emotion. The officer behind the desk led me further into the back of the building to a cell room where Signe sat in the back. My breath caught in my throat when I saw Sean's body lying peacefully on the dirty cement, ocean blue eyes staring lifelessly at nothing. "HOW COULD YOU?!?" I exploded with rage, red hazing my vision like a veil as I charged towards Signe, fingers curled into fists. I wanted to tear her limb from limb, make her suffer like she made Sean. Bob and Wade were quick to react, each grabbing an arm to restrain me. "Let me go!" I cried, sobbing uncontrollably as I slumped to the floor. "I was supposed to marry you." I caressed Sean's slightly warm cheek, noticing that it was still wet with tears. He was dressed in the suit he wore on our first date like I did. Trembling, I kissed Sean's soft lips one last time, memories of us flashing in my mind. The engagement, our first date, and where I first met him back at college. "I'll be seeing you again soon." I promised him before standing back up, determination burning in my heart as Wade drove me back home. I walked inside my apartment one last time. Everything seemed duller without Sean's bright personality to make everything better. With a sigh, I climbed up the stairs to the roof. There was a soft warm breeze that brushed against my arms, causing my red tie to sway and my hair to ruffle. I walked to the edge, staring out at the horizon of tall buildings. It was sometime in the afternoon, the vibrant yellowish-orange spring sun high in the cloudless blue sky. Even the sky doesn't match Sean's eye color, I thought with wry amusement as I glanced down at the unforgiving pavement waiting below. All it took was a step. I am one step away from seeing the love of my life once more. So I took the step.

I fell forward, arms outstretched and tear stained cheeks glittering in the sun. I was falling....

And falling...

And falling...

This is the best mistake I've ever made, I decided before feeling an explosion of unbearable pain, then nothing.
