Leaving The Nest

~Sean

"Why should I have to be whatever you want me to be anyway?!?" I yelled in my mother's face, a little bit of spit flying from my mouth and towards her stoic face as I stood glowering at her, my father staring disapprovingly at me from where he was sitting in the kitchen. Her face turned a bright shade of crimson red. "Because you're my son." She replied tersely. "I don't want to be a business man! I don't want to be the youngest sibling and most of all, I don't want to be your son!" I shot back furiously, then immediately regretted what I said, wishing I could take it back, but knowing that the damage was done either way. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Malcolm, my oldest brother, watching our fight with wide eyes filled with surprise from where he was standing in the doorway of his room. I've always been the submissive younger brother that always did what he was told. Not anymore. Today I snapped, and there was no going back. I have been told what to do too many times. It was time that I was my own boss, even though I was only twenty-two years old. Her expression softened slightly, her eyes shining with hurt. "Then go." She whispered so quietly that I could barely hear her. "But-" "Go!" She roared. "Fine!" I shot back as I gathered what few possessions I could in such a short amount of time in my black suitcase before walking out the door. I looked over at my father, but he remained silent as I stepped through the door. I took one last glance behind me at the cabin I once called my home, then trudged on, tears gathering in my eyes as I clutched the light gray knit cap that used to be my mother's close to my chest. I only had enough money to afford a plane ticket to somewhere in America, but I had no idea where to go. I've never been to America. "First thing's first though. I need to get out of Athlone." I reminded myself, trying to solve the problem one step at a time as I placed the cap on my head to somewhat shield my eyes from the bright afternoon sun as I walked on, lugging my sparsely filled suitcase until I came upon a highway. "Now what?" I wondered aloud on exasperation as I watched various cars whiz by in colorful blurs. Suddenly a silver car pulled off to the side of the road in front of me. Inside was a pretty woman that looked to be about my age. She had long dirty blond hair, large black rectangular glasses and forest green eyes. "Need a ride?" She asked in a thick Danish accent. Completely ignoring my mother's warnings about stranger danger, I nodded and hopped into the tan leather passenger seat and closed the door behind me as we drove off. "Where are ye going?" I asked politely, trying to make conversation and not be awkward. "The airport. You?" She answered. "The airport I guess. Why are you going there?" I asked. "I'm visiting my family in Denmark." She replied. "I'm..." I trailed off, not really sure what I was doing. "You don't know what you're wanting to do, do you?" She smiled sympathetically. I nodded sheepishly, feeling my face turn a bright shade of red. "I don't blame you. It took me a while to find what I wanted to do too." She sighed. I considered asking her what she was doing here in Ireland, then decided that it was too personal and remained silent. We sat in an uncomfortable silence until we reached the airport. "See you later!" She waved goodbye as she moved through the crowd to wherever her flight was. I watched in awe as thousands of people swarmed around me. I haven't seen so many people in one place before. "Flight to Cincinnati leaving in five minutes." A lady announced. "What the hell." I muttered under my breath as I went up and paid for my ticket, then hurriedly boarded the plane. "This is gonna be a long ass ride." I complained as I stowed my suitcase in the overhead compartment. I was lucky enough that no one sat next to me. I wasn't in a real talkative mood. My thoughts kept returning to home and the girl I met. I hadn't even asked her what her name was. "Stupid." I slapped myself in the forehead as the plane took off. I should've asked her. I sighed in content as I leaned my head against the cold window, watching the white fluffy clouds fly by.
