Conpetition

"It's been like six hours and we still can't fund Sean!" I hissed frantically as I paced around my room, trying to think if where I would go if I were him. Nothing came to mind. Bob was sitting on his bed watching me pace around like a caged animal. "Have the police said anything?" I asked again for the third time on five minutes. "Still no. I promise I will tell you if I hear anything about him." Bob promised me exasperatedly as he ran a hand through his short hair. I nervously wrung my hands and held my head in my hands, trying desperately to think of a place where I could find him. Then very faintly I heard something. It sounded like an Irish person talking. Immediately I left the room to go investigate. Bob rolled his eyes then followed behind me. Farther down the hall was a dorm room with the door being held open by a Danish girl. She looked left, then right as she slowly closed the door. "Hey!" I shouted over at her. Her head whipped around and instantly her eyes fixed on me. "I was looking for a...friend, have you seen him?" I asked. "No." She said quickly. "Do you mind if I look in here then?" I asked as I put a hand on the doorknob. She slapped my hand away. "I do mind, it's my room!" She protested defensively. I glanced over at Bob out of the corner of my eye and was glad to see Bob sneaking behind her and into the room. "So what's your major?" I asked so I could distract her. "Art. Now leave." She ordered. "Really? I do enginee-" "I don't care, just go away!" She snapped. C'mon Bob, hurry it up, I prayed.

From outside the apartment, I could hear Signe arguing heatedly with someone outside the door. I jumped in surprise as the door softly creaked open, then closed again. "Signe?" I called out. No answer. "Jack!" A man with short curly brown hair and thin wire frame glasses ran up to me excitedly and hugged me tightly. "Ow!" I exclaimed in pain as I pushed him away from me. "Who the hell are you?!?" I demanded. "You don't remember me?" The man frowned. I shook my head no. "I got a concussion, so I don't remember much." I explained. "I'm-" the guy began to introduce himself, but was interrupted by Signe barging in. "Get out!" She yelled angrily at him. Meekly, the guy obeyed and shuffled out of the room. Signe quickly closed the door behind him and turned back to face me. "So you know him?" She asked. Again I shook my head no, feeling lost. "I just came by to check up on you." She explained as she gave me a quick kiss on the cheek then left. As soon as she closed the door, I wiped the kiss off of my face, feeling disgusted and guilty like I was betraying someone.

"So, what happened?" I sled Bob once we both retreated back into our dorm and shut the door. Bob hesitated slightly before answering. "Sean got a concussion. The only thing he remembers is whatever that Danish chick told him. If I were to guess, it's probably from the huge hailstorm that went on this morning." Bob predicted. I felt my heart sink as I slumped down onto my bed in defeat. "Well, he didn't recognize me, but he might recognize you!" Bob said hopefully. I perked up a little at the thought. "It's worth a shot u guess. It's just a matter of getting past the crazy lady." I frowned thoughtfully. Bob suddenly snapped his fingers excitedly. "She can't always be there at her room! I can try and figure out her schedule and find a good time to sneak us in." "Bob you're a genius!" I praised him, beaming widely. I could finally try and make things up to Sean.

"Okay, it took a lot of asking people, but I think we have a shot at going at twelve. That's when she eats lunch." Bob informed me. "It is-" I paused to check the time on my phone. "-eleven fifty, so I say we go ahead and get ready to go as soon as she leaves." I decided. The two of us waited impatiently by the door for the Danish chick to leave. Finally after what felt like an eternity, she exited her dorm. Bob and I darted to her dorm and opened it with ease. Lying in bed swaddled in blankets was Sean, sleeping soundly. "Sean!" I whispered sharply as I gently shook him. "Huh?" He snorted as he woke up. He looked from Bob, to me, then to Bob again. "Do I know you guys?" He asked as he slid out of bed and pushed the wad of blankets off of him. Before I could answer, he began coughing, barely able to breath in between each cough before he fell unconscious onto the wooden floor. I quickly caught his head with my hands and gently lowered his head onto my lap. I smoothed back his scruffy short light brown and carefully shook him. "Jack?" My heart began pounding in my ears as I stared helplessly at Sean's prone form. "What did you do to him?!?" The Danish lady shrieked. "What the-" The headmaster froze in the doorway when he saw the four of us. "I'm going to call nine-one-one, okay?" He whipped out his phone and dialed in the number. "Sean, please wake up, this is a stupid way to get back at me." I sniffed as tears gathered up in my eyes, clouding my vision. Five minutes later I could hear sirens blaring in the distance, getting louder as they steadily grew closer. Eventually paramedics came bustling in here and carried Sean away on a stretcher and into an ambulance. "What's wrong with him?!?" I cried as the ambulance drove off. "From what we can tell so far, he has a serious case of pneumonia and possible brain injury." The paramedic stated. "B-But-" I stammered as I felt Bob gently lead me away. "I'll take you there." Bob grabbed his car keys then ran with me to his car.

I was worried that by the time I would get there he would be gone, but thankfully he wasn't. Sean was hooked up to a bunch of random different machines, his chest rising, then falling as he breathed through a see through plastic mask strapped to his face. Unfortunately the Danish lady was there too. "He's alive, but the pneumonia has really weakened him and he has mild brain damage, meaning that he won't be able to remember things for a bit and he is in a coma-" "For how long?" I interrupted. "I don't know." He admitted. "The best we can do is keep him on life support until he wakes up." He sighed, then left the room again. "This is my fault." I realized as I watched Sean's chest rise and fall in a steady rhythm. "I chased him away and now..." I trailed off. "We'll stay here as long as you want." Bob told me. I nodded, not really listening to what he said. We stayed there until visiting hours were closed, which wasn't until eight at night. Bob brought food to me as I talked to Sean and kept me company. "What are you doing here anyway?" I finally asked the lady who was sitting quietly in the corner right before we were forced to leave. "My name is Signe and I am his girlfriend." She proclaimed proudly. I then remembered what Sean said about leaving Ireland because of girlfriend issues. I guess they followed him here. "So it's true." I muttered, feeling deflated. Jack had a girlfriend. Sending trouble, Bob ushered me back to his car and drove me back to our dorm. "You wanna visit him tomorrow morning?"' Bob asked as we entered our dorm. I shrugged, then flopped face first onto my bed, my face buries in my pillow. "What's up? Before I couldn't get you to leave-" "Sean has a girlfriend!" I cut Bob off frustratedly as I screamed into my pillow. "Just...try and get some sleep, okay?" Bob advised. Instead of answering, I rolled over on my side so I was facing away from Bob and I didn't  sleep, I stared at the wall instead, feeling wide awake and restless. "I need to stop caring about him. He doesn't care about you." I reminded myself. But there still was that tiny part of me that didn't believe Signe. I held onto that hope tightly like it was a life preserver.
