Review: The Lotus Eaters is a gripping sci-fi horror story which will take the reader to an unknown universe.
The six crew members of the TSS Olavia follow a distress signal to an unknown planet to save human lives. Yazmin Lang is the Chief Security Officer and leads the mission. As the crew lands on the planet, they split into pairs and decide to take different routes to the distress signal and meet there. When only four of the six crew members arrive at the distress signal, Lang is worried and tries to get a hold of the missing Astronauts by radio. They don't respond, and Lang and her team return to the ship. There they hear the screams of one of the missing people out of the woods. Lang and Joey West follow the screams into the woods. There they get scared of the noises that come from the trees. Their minds get attacked by the Lotus Eaters that make them feel comfort and happiness. Lang and West find the dead bodies of their crew members while their minds are under the influence of the aliens, not allowing them conscious thought. While her friend is paralysed by the trees, Lang tries to flee and makes it to the ship. There she gets a hold of the communication system. She tells the others to leave the planet as soon as possible and to never come back... but is there still time?
The story is worth a read and it's exciting and mysterious until the end. The author describes the planet in colorful pictures and weaves a captivating and creative story with complex characters. I would not recommend this story for readers who are easily triggered by horror scenarios. Thus the reader is able to get deeper into the story and to feel what the crew members feel while on this rescue mission.
Every reader who enjoys science fiction and horror stories should read this one.
All in all, it's a great short story that blends the genres of horror and Sci-Fi in a masterful way.

Interview with the Author
How long have you enjoyed writing?
I've been writing for as long as I remember, in every level of schooling I was always in the extracurricular writing groups or the special writing courses — it's pretty much the only thing that I've consistently enjoyed since I was a young kid! I'm a bit of a classics nerd, and the lotus eaters are figures that appear in The Odyssey.
I'd never heard of lotus-eaters until I read your story, where did you first hear about them?
I'm not sure when I first heard about them but it just seemed right to give my monsters that name; beings that tempt crew members to stay forever where they've landed by means of happiness.
Your story includes themes of sci-fi and horror, is this your first time writing for those genres? / What were your inspirations for The Lotus Eaters?
Sci-fi is the genre that I write in the most. I went through a long period where I couldn't really write anything original (chronic creative block haha) and Star Trek fanfiction was the thing that kept me writing! So now my repertoire is mostly sci-fi. I've dabbled in horror a bit, and I'm a fairly big fan of horror books and movies, so I'm not uncomfortable with writing it.
If your story were to be made into a film, who would you want to cast for your characters?
I actually don't really follow any actors or celebrities so I genuinely don't know any names of actors... I never really write with actors cast in my head, however many of my characters are based on or inspired by other characters — e.g. Joe is very clearly inspired by McCoy from Star Trek, and Lang is somewhat of a Janeway-type character. Outside of that I honestly can't think of any actors that I picture as each character!
Do you have any other stories in the works?
Not anything I'm planning on publishing on Wattpad any time soon. I'm actually working alongside a literary journal to create and refine a piece for publication, but that's under my real name so I won't be sharing that to Wattpad. I'm planning on giving next year's Open Novella Contest a go, but for now I'm focusing on my uni work.
