Chapter 21
Just a few days later, Hunter sat in concentration on his bed in his room, sewing a mark onto his Golden Guard cape. He had been sitting like that for a while when his little palisman friend settled on his shoulder, chirping.
"Yeah! It does look good as new.", the boy replied and looked at his work with a satisfied smile, but with its poorly sewn-on condition, the smile quickly disappeared again. "Aaand I have no idea what I'm doing...."
Suddenly there was a knock on his room door. While Flapjack quickly hid, Hunter got up confused and went to open the door. As he did so, he was a little startled as he saw two Coven Scouts and wasn't sure if this meant anything good or bad for him. However, one of the two only handed him a letter which he accepted confused before the two disappeared again and he turned away and opened the letter himself.
It was from Emperor Belos, his uncle...
"My duties are keeping me busy. I entrust you to lead the Coven Heads today. Consider this a test .", the light-blond boy said out loud before he smiled confidently. That shouldn't be too difficult.
With quick steps he grabbed his cape and pulled on his Golden Guard uniform, fastened the cape and walked to the throne room to meet the Coven Heads there. In fact, just as he arrived in the hallway in front of it, the heavy door opened and the Coven Heads came out. "Good you're all here, we can get started-" he began calmly and composed but he watched as Healing, Potion, Construction, Illusion and Oracle leaders just walked past him with friendly smiles.
"Hey wait! Come back here!", he said a bit startled, after all they all got along well and he himself had imagined the whole thing differently. However, Raine stopped and looked over at Hunter, which also brought Terra, the Plant Coven leader, to a standstill. She smiled softly at Hunter. "Don't worry we know what to do." "Yeah small one." The Construction leader agreed as he continued walking. Now Terra and Raine also started to move, although Raine was more guided by Terra.
"But I...", Hunter began with a slightly disappointed expression on his face, when he suddenly realized that two Coven Heads hadn't passed him yet. So they still had to be in the throne room! With newfound energy, he ran to the large door and opened it in one swoop and without a hitch.
As expected, he spotted the two missing ones in front of (and Eberwolf on top of) a long table full of cards and reels. "Darius, Eberwolf!" he called out. "Why is everyone leaving...? We're scheduled to have a recruitment meeting." Darius sighed a little as Hunter had jumped right into the subject without further ado. "Good morning to you too." Hunter looked aside a bit embarrassed because he understood what Darius wanted to tell him.
"We decided to reschedule the meeting. Everyone has better stuff to do...and you can do whatever you want today i guess." He shrugged. Hunter looked at him a little disappointed and surprised, but then Darius noticed that Hunter's cape had sewn spots.
"Hm? Did you sew something on your Cape?" Hunter looked embarrassed at the older one, but then nodded. "Show me." Darius said to him, out of curiosity about what was on the cape. The light blonde then pulled off his cape and stepped closer to hand it to the Coven Head. Darius smiled kindly and took the cape in his own hands and turned it over to face him. His facial expression turned a bit surprised. "Oh...this is...impressively bad...", but it didn't sound malicious, but rather as if Darius had simply expected something else.
"Wait...", the Coven Head looked more closely and thoughtfully at the symbol. "Is this the old Golden Guard sigil?" "Of course it is!" Hunter said straight out, unable to think of anything else to sew onto his cloak. Darius smiled slightly. "I knew your predecessor. He was my mentor. One of the strongest witches I've ever known." Hunter immediately replied: "Belos says I don't need magic to serve the Coven." since he took it as a kind of comparison since he didn't have any magic himself.
"Here." Darius just said and gave Hunter his cape back before he turned to go with Eberwolf. Hunter turned to them. "Wait..." he then said because he thought that he had to prove himself to Darius because his predecessor had been his mentor. However, Darius found he didn't have to prove himself because he already knew what Hunter was capable of and how he ticked.
Darius looked back at him over his shoulder.
"What can I do to be worthy of the symbol...?" Darius sighed a little. "I don't know. Find new recruits for the Emperor's Coven. The best and the brightest witches in all the land.", but he said it in a sarcastic tone, since he honestly didn't think Hunter would take his statement seriously and was serious about his own.
He probably wouldn't have guessed that he would put such an idea in the boy's head. It wasn't until Hunter said "I'll do it." that he slowly became aware of it. "Don't do exactly what you get told.", Darius sighed before he and Eberwolf left Hunter alone.
It took Hunter some time to come up with a plan, but at some point he had the idea to go to the Hexside. So he got some clothes to match and disguised himself as a Potion Track student before mingling with the school community with Flapjack on his shoulder as they were in the process of presenting or joining various clubs.
"Look at all these potential recruits. Sure I've never actually spoken to witches my age....Teens are probably into the same things as me! Like Authority and Rules!", Hunter talked to his palisman before he got up convinced and walked towards the first witch he saw. "Classmate! Ignore the fact that we've never met. What if I told you all your dreams could come true and you just have to leave your home, friends and family forever.", he began to tell with a smile. But the witch in front of him didn't bring the reaction he had hoped for or expected.
His next attempts also failed miserably and ended in him having to fly away from a beast because he accidentally stepped on its tail. This accident also forced him to meet Willow and Gus. They were friends of Luz the Human, but he didn't find that out until later.
Since Willow wanted to open a sports club that should attract the "best and brightest" and Hunter had heard these words from Darius, he more or less let himself be persuaded to join this club. Here, thanks to Flapjack's help, he introduced himself as Caleb Jasper Bloodwilliams, who was transferred from the toes of the titans.
After that, all he had to do in front of school was show off some of the tricks he learned as the golden guard to attract more candidates to the club. However, Hunter pursued the goal of taking Willow and that team as recruits for the Emperors Coven, while Willow wanted to find a club for sport with friends.
At first, however, Hunter wasn't very convinced of the new team, but after getting to know them better and giving them a chance, they quickly grew into a good team. Just before their first game Hunter decided to call Darius so he grabbed a crow phone and told it to call Darius.
Hunter didn't know that Darius was actually relaxing and enjoying his day off, but well Darius wouldn't be Darius if something didn't always get in the way. "Darius it's me!", the boy began immediately, delighted when he heard the startled noises of the man, who hadn't expected a call. "What the- how did you even get my number?" Darius asked surprised, since he couldn't remember giving it to him. "Doesn't matter, but what does matter is that I found some incredible recruits in Hexside! I'm earning my place just like you told me!" Darius blinked. "Wait I told you to not do it.", he then said a bit perplexed. "I gotta go Darius but you'll meet them soon!" With that, Hunter hung up and turned to his team.
Darius, on the other hand, sat up with a sigh from the couch he had been lying on. "Seems like I need to talk to him again."
When Hunter returned to his team they were ready for their first game which served to prove their club could last. Hunter didn't quite understand what the problem was, but he played along anyway and had a lot of fun proving himself with Willow, Gus, Viney and Skara as a Team.
Eventually they won and Hunter was the one who gave their team the name "Emerald Entrails" because they were green and there was more to them than you would think. However, after they took a group photo and Hunter confessed to himself and them that he had a lot of fun, he decided to tell them the real reason he was there.
Turns out they weren't as excited as he thought and after he revealed himself to them as the Golden Guard they were just startled, especially when some Coven Scouts came out of the woods. But now Hunter was a bit surprised too, that' why he blocked one of them when they surrounded his new team.
"Oh, hello there Scouts, I didn't give you orders to come here." "Darius sent us to collect your recruits.", the Scout replied and pushed past the smaller one. "Ah okay very good! And there won't be any delay in branding you with coven sigils and taking you away from your friends and family forever hooray!", Hunter addressed his team again and waved his hands around in agreement while he was there face hidden under a mask.
