Chapter 4

Finally! That did not just take a month too long. My computer was being mean to me and wouldn't work :/ I'm probably gonna write another Chapter tomorrow just for the lack of updates lately. Yes this one is also shorter than my usual chapters.

"You did not do that!" Thomas' laughter could be heard clearly through the screen, putting a smile on Newt's face within seconds.

"I swear to god I did. The cops hate me now." Newt looked at his new friend like he'd gone mental, and maybe he had, but they still had a laugh over it.

"Remind me to never go drinking with you." Thomas faked sadness for the others words but he couldn't help the small chuckle that left his lips effortlessly.

"So how's school? Do you miss me?"

"Not enough to want you back." Newt started laughing at the other boys reaction.

"Ouch. You just hurt my feelings." The blonde rolled his eyes before he heard a noise from outside, glancing out the window to see his mums car being parked in the driveway, and he let out an involuntary groan.

"What's wrong Newt?" Thomas looked generally concerned now and Newt almost wanted to hug him through the computer screen. Almost.

"Satan has come back. I repeat. Satan has come back." Thomas looked confused, his eyebrows furrowed and his lips in a pout. Newt thought he looked adorable before he let out another groan in annoyance that he had just thought that.

"Do you want me to come rescue you?" And that's when Newt burst out laughing, completely forgetting that his mum was home for a minute.

"Tommy, you live like an hour and a half away."

"Actually two, but I guess picking up some speeding tickets along the way won't hurt." Newt shook his head, hoping that Thomas was kidding.

"Please be joking. I don't need you to get in any trouble cause of me." Thomas placed his head in his hands, a smile still evident on his lips, before glancing up at Newt who was currently taking a sip of water.

"What if you're worth it." Newt choked slightly, before his cheeks turned red, and he had to look down whilst biting his lip. Was he serious? He hesitantly glanced up to meet Thomas' gaze, and there was no source of evidence that told him that Thomas was joking. He wasn't kidding, and that very fact made Newt blush even more, but he never looked away from Thomas.

"I went too far didn't I?" Newt furiously shook his head, trying to reassure the other boy that it was okay.

"It wasn't what I'd expected but I definitely don't think you went too far at all." Newt could see Thomas' tense shoulders slump and he seemed to visibly relax.

"For real this time. Who's satan?" And that's when Newt remembered that his mum was home and his mood immediately seemed to change like an on and off switch.

"My mum." His voice quieted down to a whisper and he looked down ashamed. He wasn't supposed to hate his mother, but he did and it made him feel extremely guilty.

"Oh." Was all the other boy said and Newt could only respond with, "Yea, oh."

It was painfully quiet for them afterwards, neither knowing what to say to the other, so they eventually both agreed to just call each other tomorrow and talk. Newt hung up with mixed feelings. He didn't talk about his mum to anyone, and then Thomas had made Newt blush furiously, and then they'd had an actual conversation between friends. Newt wasn't familiar with it and it scared him a bit, but he could't help the smile that appeared on his lips as he fell asleep.

The walk to school was incredibly painful. The rain fell harshly onto the ground or soaked into Newt's clothes, and the freezing cold had made Newt's bad leg hurt, his limp more evident than usual. He thought about running back home and skipping school, but he couldn't. For one, he couldn't run, and second, he couldn't afford to miss any classes as much as he wanted to.

So now he was walking to school in the pouring rain and a heavy limp, with a cigarette placed between his lips like every morning. What he hadn't expected was to get a phone call. He was even more surprised when he saw that it was Thomas. What would Thomas want this early in the morning? He hesitantly picked up and placed the phone back in his pocket. He had his headphones on so he could hear Thomas anyway.

"You okay, Tommy?" He didn't know why he'd asked that before saying hello, but he had and now he waited anxiously for Thomas to answer.

"Remember how my parents were fighting with all the legal drama and custody and all that annoying stuff?"

"Uh huh. I remember." Newt suddenly wondered what this was about. He remembered Thomas mentioning that his mum lived here, or maybe his dad, he couldn't remember. Was he moving?

"Well guess what?" Thomas let out a chuckle and his voice was dripping with sarcasm, and Newt was suddenly worried about what was happening.

"Well they got this joint custody sort of thing which means that I will be moved around every two weeks between my Mum and my Dad. In other words, I'm currently going to school and then I have to pack some stuff when I get home so that I can have two places to live." Newt tried to gather all the information in one go, but it was a lot to process.

"Wait. Does that mean that..."

"...You'll see me every two weeks. Yes, it does and right now that's the only good thing that I see in all of this."

"So when will you be here?" The blonde waited patiently for the other to reply, and he eventually did.

"This Saturday to get everything settled. I still hate this. How am I gonna practice with lacrosse if I go to school there for two weeks and then homeschooling for two weeks at mums with the assignments I miss back at dads? They'll kick me off the team if I miss so much practice. Newt I can't do this." Newt's heart broke at how sad the other boy seemed. He really loved lacrosse and Newt could tell, and the very fact that this could all be ruined for Thomas really hurt him.

"You'll figure it out Tommy. I know you will. You'll still be able to play with them and you can practice over here as well."

"What? You mean with your terrible team?" Newt laughed when Thomas' usual self came back for a moment and he tried to stop before someone saw him laugh and gave him a look.

"Not with them. That'd be low even for you. You can practice with me. I don't know how to play but you can teach me and get practice out of it yourself."

"You'd really do that for me?" I'd do almost anything if you asked me to.

"Of course I would. Just call me and I'll be over."

"Thanks Newt." Newt shrugged before he realized that they weren't on skype like usual, he was on the phone and Thomas couldn't see him.

"It's nothing Tommy. Keep me updated so that I can crush you in a hug when you arrive."

"I thought you didn't miss me that much?" Newt looked down at the ground and then waited to respond for a few seconds.

"Well maybe I lied." And he hung up before he could get another response from the other boy.
