Chapter 3

Newt was never known to be sane. However, he still questioned his reasoning behind walking to school on a Saturday morning. He felt bad about irritating Thomas, which was an unfamiliar feeling to him. One that he could do well without. He arrived to his destination and saw the other schools team still playing on the empty field, but his eyes scanned around for one boy in particular. They'd won yesterday and Newt was glad. His school was devastated, but he wasn't.

He didn't spot Thomas anywhere, and he was sure his face fell when he couldn't find the reason to why he was here. Normally, he'd leave it alone and go by his day, but it was something about Thomas' persistence yesterday to stay with Newt. It was the fact that Thomas chose to go after Newt. He chose to talk to him and he wasn't saying anything bad to him either. To say it got Newt's attention would be an understatement. It amazed him, and now Newt couldn't stop blaming himself for being so rude to the one person that was nice to him.

He hesitantly walked onto the field filled with players spread out across, passing to each other as they went. Newt knew that he looked extremely out of place given the fact that they were all built differently and presented themselves with confidence. Newt was the opposite. He wasn't close to being anywhere near confident, and he was extremely thin. It was almost unnatural, you'd think he barely ate at all. But he knew that he ate like any other person, which was plenty to get through the day.

"Lookin' for someone?" Newt raised his head up from the ground to see a younger boy standing in front of him. An arrogant smirk present on his lips, his blue eyes expectant of Newt's reply. Newt didn't speak.

"I asked you a question. It's a little rude not to answer." He still didn't reply. Instead he opted on looking down onto the grass below again. Newt didn't expect the next thing to happen, but it did. He was pushed to the ground by the other boy, landing onto his side as he visibly winced when he felt his hip collide with the ground.

"Well? Aren't you gonna say somethin' now?" Newt whimpered in fear glancing upwards as the blue eyed boy stepped closer to him. He expected to get hit, even with all the other people around, but he didn't. Suddenly, the unfamiliar boy was no longer in front of him. Someone else was standing in his place, and that someone was Thomas.

"What the fuck, dude?" Newt heard the kid who was now on the ground, shout. Thomas ignored the boys question, his eyes glazed with anger. He was furious.

"The hell do you think you're doing to him?" Thomas' reply came out strong, confident, as if he knew exactly where he was going with this. He knew what he was doing. Newt sat up and pulled his knees to his chest, ignoring the seething pain prominent on his left hip. He was scared of what would unfold between the two in front of him. The boy who Thomas had pushed to the ground, pushed himself up and walked up to Thomas.

"The fucker wouldn't reply to me." Thomas walked another step closer to the boy, and Newt closed his eyes. He didn't want to see this.

"That's cause he doesn't talk to assholes." Newt's eyes snapped open at the reply and he dared to look back up at the two boys. Their figures were hovering over him which made him look extremely small. He didn't like it.

"What did you just say to me?" He was being threatened for defending Newt and Newt couldn't help but feel guilty. This was his fault.

"You heard me. Now walk away, or I won't hesitate to hurt you." The younger one scoffed. He didn't believe that Thomas could hurt him. Newt wasn't sure as he hadn't seen either of them throw a punch, but he didn't doubt that Thomas had the strength for it.

"Why are you defending this pathetic boy anyway?" Thomas paused his movement and he now had a small smile evident on his lips.

"Poor Matthew. You seem to be getting Newt confused with yourself." Matthew, who Newt now knew him as, seemed taken aback. However, he didn't budge and cower away like Newt would've done.

"How cute. You know his name. Bet that that comes in handy when...." But before he could finish, he was thrown back onto the ground. Thomas had pushed himself above him and was hitting him while Newt sat paralyzed beside them. He didn't know what to do, how to react. No one ever defended him like this, so he had no idea on how to respond to what was happening in front of him. Newt seemed to snap back out of it when he could see blood on Matthew's face, and he knew that it had gone too far.

"S-stop it! Please!" Thomas instantly stopped, but that's when Matthew started, and he threw himself onto Thomas and started to hit him back. Tears fell from Newt's eyes as he saw Thomas squirm trying to fight himself out of the other boys grip. Nothing worked, and Newt suddenly wondered where the other team members were and why they hadn't done anything yet.

He didn't know what came over him next but he ran over to the boys struggling on the ground, as fast as he could manage, and he pushed Matthew to the side with all the strength that his body could muster. It wasn't much, but it was enough to throw the other boy off his balance and fall besides Thomas. Newt didn't focus on him once he was to the side, he focused on Thomas, who now had a bleeding lip that was swollen and an eye to match. This is your fault.

"I- I'm sorry." He wanted to hug Thomas right then, he looked so broken glancing up at Newt. But Thomas still managed a small smile and Newt returned it instantly.

"Don't be sorry. He was gonna hurt you."

"I'm a stranger. Why does it matter?" Thomas didn't respond, instead he glanced to the side to see that Matthew was no longer there.

"It matters because I don't like it when other people get hurt when I can prevent it. Now c'mon." Thomas got up slowly and held his hand out for Newt to take, which he eventually did after contemplating on it for a couple of seconds.

"That bastard probably just went to our coach to blame this all on me. Do you know somewhere I can hide until it cools off?" Newt's eyes widened.

"You want to hide? Doesn't that just make things worse?" Thomas bit his lip, pacing back and forth, and Newt found it oddly attractive.

"Wether it makes things worse or not, I'll find out. Right now I just don't want to deal with this. Please?" Newt let out an audible sigh but nodded anyway. Thomas had helped him, the least he could do was to return the offer. Newt signaled for the brown eyed boy to follow him, and he did, keeping up with Newt's pace as he walked besides the smaller boy.

He followed Newt all the way to where they were yesterday, except that they were besides Newt's tree.

"You can still see the field, but they won't see you." Newt sat on the log he'd placed and Thomas followed his actions.

"Thanks." Newt shrugged like it was nothing and a silence followed shortly after. A silence that Thomas broke.

"Ehrm... Last time I checked, we don't really have school on Saturdays. Why are you here?" Newt's breathing hitched as the reason to why he was here had completely slipped his mind.

"Well, honestly... I came here to talk to you." Thomas furrowed his eyebrows, a look of confusion evident on his face, asking for Newt to continue.

"I felt bad... about how I acted towards you yesterday. You were trying to be nice to me and I was being horrible. I came to apologize. I couldn't stop thinking about it yesterday."

"It's alright. I get it. Besides, you were right. Why make a deal when I'm leaving the next day anyway?" Newt glanced over to look at Thomas, who was already looking at him. He contemplated to himself on what he should say next, and he was sure he didn't just surprise Thomas with what he said next.

"I- I mean I have skype. We could still have that deal." The boy next to him lets out a small chuckle in response.

"You don't have to just because you feel bad. I already told you that it's okay."

"But what if I want to?" Thomas stopped to look at Newt again, trying to find any sign of deception. He soon came to realize that Newt wasn't joking, and he nodded.

"Okay. Now I'll finally have a reason to have a skype."

"Same." It was quiet between the two of them again before Newt asked one final question before he had to go.

"Is this the last time I'll see you?"

"No, definitely not. That would suck. Besides, my mum lives here and there's this whole legal argument happening with my dad, so I might actually move here depending on how that goes. You'll be stuck with me depending on how it ends." Newt smiled a bit before opening the notes app on his phone and handing it to Thomas.

"Your skype? I have to go now so I thought... well yea." Thomas nods and types something onto the device, only to then hand it back to Newt.

"I need to get going. It was nice to meet you, even if you were annoying the hell out of me."

"No problem. It's what I do. And it was nice to meet you too. You're interesting Newt. I like you." Newt stood up after their goodbyes, and for the first time in ages, he walked home from school with a smile on his face. He likes you. Someone actually likes you.
