II

She started coughing and feeling like she would never stop, after throwing up some she wiped her eyes and looked up seeing a man looking down at her. She was back on the beach and she couldn't breathe after swallowing a bunch of salt water.

"Hey it's okay it's okay take your time and breathe." His voice sounded soft and smooth and she simply nodded and pushed her hair behind her ears.
"Wh-what happened?" She wanted to know.

"I pulled you out of the water, love, you started for the bottom and you weren't headed up."

"Are you a lifeguard?" She looked around she didn't remember seeing anybody and she didn't think there was a tower nearby.

"Oh no I'm uhm I'm just new around here and I just wanted to take a walk when I saw you go into the water."
She nodded and ran her fingers through her hair.

"My house is just right up there I think I can make it there." She tried to get up and her legs nearly gave out and she fell into his arms.

He picked her up and looked into her eyes and he smiled at how they looked like the sky and her heart melted at how his eyes were green like emeralds.
"Uhm my house," She pointed up past the beach to a tiny little yellow home. "That's it."

He walked her back and she studied the way his muscles moved as he carried her, and he took her in and set her on the couch.

"You aren't wet." She stated. It was bizarre. How was she drenched still and he was bone dry?

"Oh I um I dried off when you were waking up."

She raised an eyebrow. It didn't add up but she just nodded her head.
"Can you get me a bottle of water please?"

He scoffed. "A bottle? What's wrong with tap?"

"I-Uhm I didn't think there was anything wrong with bottled water I mean there's nothing wrong with tap I just don't usually drink it."

He walked to the kitchen and searched through the cabinets until he found a cup and filled it.

"Bottled water is terrible. All plastics are. If people hate the way tap tastes it's because their filters don't get rid of the taste of plastic."

He brought her water back and he looked somewhat tense.

"You feel really strongly about this don't you?" She asked.

He simply nodded.

"What's your name?" She asked.

"Douglas, miss, and yours?"

She blushed. "It's Mary Ann. Like from Gilligan's Island."

He raised an eyebrow at her.

"What's that?"

~~~~~~~
Mary Ann's stomach growled, they'd been sitting on her couch watching the entire first season of Gilligan's Island.
"Douglas are you hungry?"
He turned his attention away from the tv. "Yeah what do you like to eat?"
"We could go out to this restaurant that I really like down the road."
He nodded and she put her shoes on and they started walking.
"So where do you stay?" She asked looking up at him.
He shrugged. She was jealous at how he seemed so nonchalant and she was a nervous wreck.
"You don't know? Aren't you staying at a hotel or at least in a car?"
"Not really I mean I just kind of walk everywhere and sleep wherever I can when it's time for sleep."
"So you're homeless?"
"Oh no I'm not homeless my home just isn't around here."
They stepped into the restaurant.
"What's the name?" The hostess asked.
"Mary Ann Johnson." Mary Ann took Douglas and sat in a little waiting spot waiting to be called.
"So Mary Ann why do you live alone? You're young, you live on a beach so I'm sure lots of people would love to live with you, so why?"
Mary Ann bit her lip nervously. "I'm not that young."
He raised an eyebrow.
"What? I'm 18 that's really not THAT young."
He couldn't help but let out a deep chuckle. "Where's your family?"
She looked down. "I don't really have one anymore." She picked and bit at her nails until there was no nail left to bite on.
"I'm sorry." He said. "...I didn't know my mom."
She looked towards him and he was looking out the window. "My mom passed about 3 months ago...she was the last family I had...what about you?"
He slowly slid his hand towards hers. "I have a dad and two younger brothers. They're back home."
She peeled up at hearing about his family. "What are they like?"
He smiled softly. "My father is a terrific man. He cares for others and puts the well being of his family and his- friends- first. Damn the consequences. As long as everyone else is fine so is he."
She loved hearing about his father and it made her wonder why he was here away from his home.
"Now my two brothers, I have one younger brother named Alexander. He's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. He helps me when I can't figure things out sometimes and I hope to always have his help in the future once I return home."
Mary Ann's heart felt a soft crack at hearing him mention returning home.
"And my other brother is named Terrence. Terrence means well I mean I believe he has a good heart he just has a hard way of showing it. I believe growing up without mother took a toll on him that he was unable to overcome, however I always have seen the best in him. He may not be good at showing he cares but he does care deeply. And what about your father?"
They got called to their table before she could answer him.
"How about you tell me what your favorite thing to eat is."
~~~~~~

"Douglas where are your clothes?" It was finally getting dark and Douglas hadn't left. He was worried about her after the way he'd found her.

"I don't really have many I mean I have a bag that I left down at the beach but that's all."

She shot up in her seat. "What if somebody takes it?!"

He chuckled softly. "Don't worry I hid it. I'm not worried and I'll be able to find it, however my dear I fear I must be leaving soon." He got up and kissed her bead softly and a feeling of warmth and protection spread over her body.

"Don't leave." She looked up at him through her eyelashes, leaned her head up and wraped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer.
