Hurricanes & Earthquakes

These events have left a lasting significant amount of impact on Puerto Rico, with hurricanes being a frequent occurrence due to the island's location in the Caribbean hurricane belt.

Yet as puertorricans we stood strong and united to build up this beautiful Island I Proudly call Home.

Hurricanes:

1. San Ciriaco Hurricane (1899) – One of the deadliest hurricanes in Puerto Rican history, causing thousands of deaths.

2. San Felipe Segundo (1928) – A devastating Category 5 hurricane that struck Puerto Rico directly, causing widespread destruction.

3. Hurricane Hugo (1989) – A Category 3 hurricane that caused extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture.

4. Hurricane Georges (1998) – A powerful storm that resulted in significant loss of life and property damage across the island.

5. Hurricane Irene (2011) – A Category 1 hurricane that caused flooding and power outages.

6. Hurricane Maria (2017) – A catastrophic Category 5 hurricane that caused widespread devastation, leading to a humanitarian crisis.

Earthquakes:


1. 1867 Virgin Islands Earthquake – A major earthquake with a magnitude estimated at 7.5, followed by a tsunami that affected Puerto Rico.

2. 1918 San Fermín Earthquake – A magnitude 7.1 earthquake off the coast of Aguadilla, causing a tsunami and widespread destruction.

3. 2020 Southwestern Puerto Rico Earthquake – A series of earthquakes and aftershocks that culminated in a magnitude 6.4 earthquake on January 7, 2020, which caused significant damage in the southern part of the island.
