Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The Magizoologist
Rosemary had worse days. But today wasn't anything that she will ever imagine.
Yes, she may the daughter of Percival Graves. Yes, it is hard to be the child of the head of the Magical Security. Yes, it is complicated to know the world not known by the muggles.
Rosemary is American, but she was better known with British terms. As she was saying, she had worse days.
The Ministry was busy this morning. The Daily Prophet was bustling with news about the mysterious invisible "beast" lurking around New York City, and threatening to expose the magic world that they tried so hard to keep as a secret from muggles, wait, No-Maj.
Rosemary walked the aisles of their base. That's what she called it, at least. Maybe it was called home?
Only for the president Seraphina Picquery, obviously, she thought.
She heard about the strange attacks that have been happening recently in New York, and wondered who was up to it and why.
Rosemary always wanted to help in investigations like these, but her father Percival will never let her to it.
"It's too dangerous, honey." He will say to her. "I want to keep you safe." Yeah, right, as if keeping your daughter away from anyone will help Rosemary.
She scoffed at the thought when she was in front of an Auror she knows, and whom she trusts. His name is Alexander Lovelace, a high-ranking Auror who is part of the investigation team that Rosemary always wanted to be a part of.
"Hey Rose." Rose was the nickname Alexander used often with her. He always said that she has a personality like a white rose. Beautiful and quiet.
"Hi Alex." Rosemary whispered under her breath. She isn't the social kind of person, which her father frets about. Since he wants Rosemary to be a great spokeswoman, just like her mother.
Wondering who her mother is? Don't ask Rosemary. She's dead for good.
"What's up?" He quipped, as he kept his wand on his coat's pockets. Alex was a handsome young boy of Rosemary's age. He had striking blonde hair, and tanned skin. He had a lean and fit body build to go with his looks.
"The sky." Rosemary joked and chuckled softly. Upon seeing Alex's confused expression, she stopped laughing and turned her gaze downwards. "Sorry."
Alex stared blankly at her, before composing himself again. "No, I mean. It's okay. I just don't see you joke or laugh often." Alex gave her one of his killer smiles that ladies swoon over.
Rosemary just cocked her head. "What brings you here? Don't you have.." She paused for a mere second before continuing. "Auror duties?" She finished with a slight hint of worry.
Alex shook his head. "Nope. Today, I think I'm free for a few hours. Wanna go somewhere?" He invited Rosemary.
She tapped her chin. "Sure. Just let me grab my bag and we're off." Rosemary smiled at Alex and ran off.
•~•
"So.., any preferences?" Alex asked Rosemary Graves, who was gripping her backpack, as she walked at the bustling streets of New York.
"No." She said, and her gaze fell at a man of her age. He looked like he was in a great hurry, and was gripping his suitcase awfully close to him.
He looked foreign, Rosemary thought. No doubt that he might be British. He had ruffled copper locks of hair and fair skin. Yep, British alright.
"Excuse me." His voice was tinged with a thick accent that can be considered as high. But Rosemary liked it.
"Rosemary?" She whirled to see Alex looking at her. "Were you listening?" He asked her with questioned look.
"Of course." replied Rosemary. Alex gave her a raised eyebrow but didn't further pester her, or asked. Rosemary went to find the man, when she saw a crowd gathering in front of a bank.
"There has been strange things going all over the city!" The woman spoke with an utterly high voice. She was convincing, no doubt about that.
Rosemary stopped in her tracks and lent an ear to the muggles' conversation. "And we must stop it. This is obviously witches doing these." Her blood starting to run cold, and she gripped the wand in her pocket tightly.
At the corner of her eye, Rosemary saw the young man listening too. Rosemary looked around to check if Alexander was still around, and with her, but it seems like he has left alone.
Well, Rosemary was fine with that. She was never even that comfortable with friends or social people like Alex.
She then heard a stumble and whirled to see a plump muggle that tripped on the suitcase of the young man who caught her eye a while ago.
"Sorry." apologized the British man. The muggle looked at him, and shook his head. "No hard feelings." The man said, and went on his way.
The woman who was speaking then looked at the man. "What are you doing here, anyways?" She asked the man. He looked startled. "N..nothing. I was just passing by." He stuttered, with an obvious hint of nervousness present in his wavering voice.
Rosemary just shrugged and turned to listen to young woman. She continued about the weird and mysterious attacks that have been spoken around. And that it threatens the world.
Her gaze then went to the British man. He was looking at his case, with a look of panic in his face. "What was wrong with him?" Rosemary murmured under her breath, so not to be heard.
He then looked over at the stairs, and there, Rosemary saw a Niffler. Her eyes widened when she saw it and looked back at the man.
He was scrambling, and squeezing his way out of the crowd. "Excuse me." "Sorry!" were the words he kept on uttering while he was running.
Rosemary brandished her wand and hid it behind her coat as she followed the man. He was ducking from left to right and trying to find the creature.
By the looks of it, at least.
The first thing that came up in Rosemary's mind was "Is he a wizard?". She wondered if the answer was yes, judging by how he seem to find for the runaway Niffler.
She found him then seated next to the muggle who tripped on his suitcase a while ago. The muggle was attempting for a conversation between them, and it looks like it was failing.
She was about to walk over to him, when he stood up again and ran. Leaving the muggle to seat by himself, but notice an egg beside him. Rosemary's eyes widened yet again.
"Hey fella!" He tried to call for him, but the wizard (supposing he is one) seem to have not hear him. The muggle groaned, but she looked to see someone call out for him, and he pocketed the egg and went in.
Rosemary turned and tried to spot the man. She saw him, by the counters and staring intently inside. Rosemary ran to him and gripped his shoulders.
"Hu..huh?" He stammered and Rosemary and the man were face-to-face. She held his shoulders. "Who are you?" asked Rosemary.
"Newt Scamander." He said quickly and turned, just in time to see the Niffler being escorted off in a cart towards the lift.
The doors closed before the both of them could get to it. "Hey English guy!" Rosemary's head whipped to the direction of the voice and she saw the muggle holding out the egg.
"I think you forgot your egg!" He shouted. Newt seemed to sigh and he whipped a stick out. No, wait a minute.., was that a wand?
He pointed it at the man and waved it around. He was pulled to Newt and he grabbed her to his chest and disappeared out of thin air.
•~•
Rosemary suddenly appeared near the stairs. The man had the egg at his hand, as Newt got it from him. It's shell was cracking open, and Rosemary knew that it was gonna break free.
Instead, there was a baby beast with blue feathers, or so she saw, and it looked cute. The muggle was in awe at the beast's appearance, and Rosemary just smiled at it. Newt looked fascinated and he held it with him and went down the stairs.
With no hesitance, Rosemary went down with Newt, leaving the muggle to process what just happened.
"Newt Scamander is your name?" Rosemary asked the wizard. He nodded swiftly as he set his case down and opened it.
There were lots of voices, and squawks, and squeals, and squeaky sounds. Rosemary looked confused as Newt seemed to take care of it.
"It's okay, guys. Go back in. Go inside." He soothed the animals quietly, as she heard the muggle go down the stairs.
Then Newt's gaze fell at the Niffler, who squeezed itself in the bank door. His face fell and he brandished his wand out. "Alohomora!" He utters and the door's locks started to open.
Rosemary heard footsteps behind her, and she knew they were screwed. "Hey!" She whirled to see the boss of the bank looking at the three of them.
"And now, you're robbing the bank, Kowalski." He said, and pounded the switch of the bank's alarm. And sirens started to go off.
Newt stuck his wand out, but before he could utter a spell, Rosemary already brandished hers. "Petrificus Totalus!"
He froze at his spot, and slowly fell to the ground. Newt stared at Rosemary in awe for a moment, and turned. Kowalski, the muggle she presumed that that was his name, seemed to fret. She could hear the boss say "Kowalski." faintly.
Newt got in the room, which was filled with gold and definitely a robber's dreamplace and turned to find his Niffler. Was it his Niffler?
He scooped up the Niffler and threw out the golds and silvers that it had with it. Kowalski was panicking when he heard the armed men going down the stairs. "They're coming!" He shouted at Rosemary and Newt.
Rosemary held Newt's other hand and hauled him out of the room. He gripped the suitcase with him and the armed men were pointing their guns at the three people.
"You see guys.." Kowalski tries to explain but Newt Apparates him and Rosemary outside the bank.
Kowalski then pants in exhaustion. Rosemary just stares blankly at Newt and Kowalski. Newt then looked at Kowalski. "Sorry for the mess." He apologized to Kowalski, who was still in a daze.
Newt helps Kowalski stand up. In return, Kowalski grabs his suitcase and smacks Newt in the face and runs off.
Rosemary looked alarmed. "Are you okay?" She turned to Newt, who was crouching a bit. But otherwise, he looked fine. "I'm fine, who are you?"
Rosemary bit her lip. "Rosemary. Rosemary Graves." She didn't like introducing herself as Percival's daughter because she never liked her dad, to be honest.
Newt smiled at her. "Percival Graves's daughter? Heard that she was pretty." He gave her a shy smile, and Rosemary turned red in embarrassment. "Now, let's get going." He said, as he fixed his coat and held Rosemary's hand with his other free hand.
They went on their way, and passed by a woman, who suddenly Apparated them in a corner.
"Woah!" Rosemary stuttered as her back was on the wall. "Who are you?" She asked the newcomer.
"Tina Goldstein. And I have come to ask of the racket you two made in the bank." She said, with a face that looked deadly serious.
And for all Rosemary knew, she was in big trouble. Trouble with this girl.
And trouble with her father, Percival.
So.... That's the first chapter. It's really long and it's over 1900+ words and I'm so happy for myself. I just wished I'd hit the 2000 mark. But that's fine. I enjoyed writing this anyways. I just watched Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them a few hours ago, and I love it! Wait.., I reached the 2000 mark already! So I hope you enjoyed and please vote and comment for more!
