Chapter 6: Canteen

Arjun responded, "No, no. It's not your fault. I was the one who acted without observing the surroundings. By the way, where are you going?" Kirti replied, "To the canteen." Arjun offered a surprising and unexpected encouragement, saying, "Oh. Best of luck." Her astonishment lingered as Arjun's unexpected words echoed in her mind, leaving her with a sense of intrigue and curiosity.

Later, Admin joined Kirti and greeted the other two. Arjun, with a mischievous grin, remarked, "Well, well, playing the role of the supportive companion now, are we? When did you acquire such benevolence? Or are you planning something behind her back?" Admin shot back, "Oh, please. Are you trying to relieve your stress by cursing me?" Arjun, maintaining his teasing demeanor, responded, "Oh, come on. Everyone here knows the kind of sorcery you're capable of."

During their friendly conversation, Kirti's gaze fell upon Admin's lunch bag, which appeared noticeably smaller than before. Wondering if Admin had perhaps shared her meal with Robin, Kirti refrained from asking, choosing to respect the unspoken dynamics of their relationship.

Upon reaching the ground floor, Kirti and Admin bid farewell to Arjun and Vishnu. Stepping into the main lunch area, Kirti was taken aback by the expansive dining space-it resembled more of a large dining area than a modest lunch spot. Trying to ease Kirti's surprise, Admin reassured, "Don't stress too much. Employees from all ten floors gather here for lunch if they're buying from the canteen. You might find a decent meal if you're lucky, or you might have to settle for leftovers. Go try your luck; I'll secure us a place to sit."

Spotting a food counter with a substantial queue, where employees were swiftly purchasing pre-packed lunch boxes, Kirti joined the line. The efficiency of the counter staff was evident as they efficiently cleared the line, ensuring a quick and streamlined process for the hungry employees.

As the queue shortened to a mere six individuals, Kirti found herself at the tail end, and the availability of only five lunch boxes heightened the tension. The person standing in front of the counter, keenly aware of the intense gazes from the remaining five, purchased alternative food items instead of the sought-after lunch box.

A collective sigh of relief swept through the queue as everyone thought that they secured their respective lunch, but the second person in line purchased two lunch boxes, prompting the two individuals to exchange sympathetic glances on Kirti. The pity in their eyes confirmed Kirti's suspicion that they, too, intended to purchase lunch boxes.

Approaching the food counter, Kirti's eyes welled with tears as she discovered the absence of pre-packed lunch boxes. She turned to a staff member, inquiring, "Are there any lunch boxes available?" In response, the staff member regretfully stated, "I'm sorry, we don't have any pre-packed lunch boxes, but you have the option to purchase customized lunch boxes, albeit at a slightly higher cost than the regular ones."

Hearing the possibility of a customized lunch, filled Kirti with newfound joy. She swiftly requested the staff to prepare one, specifying a preference for more curries than rice, drawn in by their enticing aroma. With her sumptuous customized lunch in hand, Kirti made her way toward the spot where she had parted ways with Admin.

Navigating the unfamiliar surroundings, Kirti heard someone call her name-it was Admin. Spotting Admin, Kirti hurried towards her and gratefully took the seat that Admin had reserved for her.

Observing Kirti's distinctive lunch box, Admin couldn't help but express curiosity, asking, "Why does your box look different than the usual ones?" In response, Kirti shared the entire incident that unfolded at the food counter, and as Admin listened, a smile formed on her lips, appreciating the quirks of Kirti's lunchtime adventure.

Amused by Kirti's lunchtime fortune, Admin remarked, "I've never seen someone as lucky as you, truly." Blushing with embarrassment, Kirti retorted, "Stop it, Admin." Undeterred, Admin playfully insisted, "Ha ha. And don't call me Admin. I have a name, you know. Call me by my name, Diana." Grinning, Kirti responded, "Okay, ma'am. Sorry, I mean, okay, Diana ma'am," injecting a touch of humor into her acknowledgment.

As Kirti's curiosity grew, she couldn't resist inquiring about the noticeable reduction in the size of Diana's lunch bag. Apologetically, she asked, "Diana, sorry to ask, but it looked like the size of your lunch bag has shrunk a bit." Diana, responding with a laugh, acknowledged, "Good observation."

"My bag contains two lunch boxes, one for me and one for Robin," Diana explained. Hearing this, Kirti teasingly remarked, "Ohh! One for you and one for your husband, huh?" Diana quickly clarified, "Shut up. We're not married yet." Undeterred, Kirti playfully responded, "Oh, so you're in position of fiance now. When will you get the promotion to wife?" With a humorous gesture, she added, "Tell me."

Diana responded, "Not sure, but I might reveal it in the future," accompanied by a shy smile. Following lunch, they returned to their floor and settled at their respective desks. Kirti noticed Harsh still engrossed in work and inquired, "Have you had your lunch?" He replied, "I will soon."

Surprised, Kirti questioned, "But lunchtime is almost about to end." Harsh chuckled and explained, "Here, the lunch break is more of a formality. It doesn't mean you have to eat strictly during that time. Between 12:30-3:00 pm, you can have your lunch whenever without any issue." Processing this, Kirti simply uttered, "Oh! It is great to know that."

Upon returning to her computer, Kirti discovered an email from Vishnu. Opening it, she found instructions to complete the attached task and visit him after successfully finishing it. With focused determination, she worked diligently until 5:00 pm, ensuring the task was completed with precision, and promptly sent the finished work to Vishnu.

After completing her task, Kirti took a moment to relax. She rose from her chair, stretching her upper body with a gentle twist before heading towards the team leader's cabin. She sought Vishnu's permission to enter in to the leader's cabin . Vishnu told her to come and sit beside him as he was reviewing the completed task she had sent.

To lighten the atmosphere, Vishnu inquired, "Did you manage to secure a packed lunch box, or did you survive on just bread?" Responding with a hint of seriousness, Kirti replied, "Oh, don't even ask. I found myself at the very end of the line, and..." She proceeded to narrate the entire canteen experience. Drawing closer to Vishnu, she leaned in and shared the details about Diana's lunch bag in a hushed tone, ensuring her words were only for Vishnu's ears, mindful not to let Robin, seated nearby, catch wind of the conversation.

Surprised, Vishnu exclaimed, "Really?" in a regular tone. Kirti, giving a subtle warning signal with her hand, urged him to speak more quietly. In a hushed voice, Vishnu murmured, "Really. I thought they brought their own lunches, but I didn't know she's the one who was bringing his lunch too. You're quite perceptive. Gathering so much information on your first day, impressive."

Flattered and feeling proud, Kirti playfully rubbed her nose with her index finger and confidently remarked, "People don't call me Byomkesh Bakshi for nothing." Vishnu, amused, smiled in response. After a while, he commended her, saying, "You've done a great job on your first day. Though there were some mistakes, they won't pose any problems. I'm sending you the file with corrections; check it later and take a look at the books I've recommended if you get any free time."

Kirti responded, "I will definitely check them," and exited the cabin. Her first day at work had gone remarkably well. Upon reaching home, after refreshing herself, she dedicated an hour or more to review the recommended books. Following this, she took some well-deserved rest and decided to rise early the next day. Mindful of her budget, she packed lunch, aiming to avoid spending her entire savings on lunch boxes.

Following her routine, Kirti received lessons from Vishnu and then returned to her desk. As the lunchtime approached, she ventured to the lunch area and spotted Diana and Robin there having their lunch. Diana noticed Kirti and extended an invitation to join them. After a few minutes, Arjun also joined the group, creating a pleasant lunchtime gathering.

Seeing towards Arjun, Diana questioned, "Any idea where Vishnu is?" Arjun, taking a moment from his meal, explained, "He's caught up with work; mentioned he'll be having his lunch a bit later." Seizing the opportunity, Arjun turned the conversation towards Kirti, inquiring, "How's your training with Vishnu progressing?" With a polite smile, Kirti shared, "It's going quite well. Vishnu has a knack for explaining things in a very clear and understandable manner."

The unexpected display of respect that Kirti showed to Arjun surprised everyone, including Arjun himself. A moment of shared glances passed among them, prompting Diana to question Kirti, "Why are you giving respect to him?" Kirti, wearing a look of surprise, replied, "Well, we have to respect our seniors, don't we?" Her response carried an air of sincerity, emphasizing the value she placed on acknowledging the experience and seniority of her colleagues. The responses, however, only deepened the sense of surprise among the group.
