Chapter 2: Kirti

Kirti dashed hurriedly towards a room and swung open the door without taking a moment to read anything written on the board. To her surprise, she had unwittingly stepped into the presentation room. As she entered, her eyes quickly fell on a woman seated on a bench, and, without realizing, she offered a quick apology for being late.

The woman in the room questioned, "Why are you apologizing to me, and by the way, who are you?" Kirti looked up and was surprised to see a lady holding a lipstick and mirror. Her appearance took Kirti aback, as she hadn't expected to find such an unexpected sight in what she assumed was the manager's office.

Kirti responded, "I'm the new member, Kirti. It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am. I am sorry I was late. I will ensure that I will not make a similar mistake again..."

In response, the lady kindly smiled and clarified, "Hold on, hold on. I think you've entered the wrong room. This is the presentation room, not the manager's room, and I'm the admin here."

Upon realizing her mistake, Kirti couldn't help but let out a little "oops." Just as she was beginning to compose herself, the door swung open with a sense of drama, revealing a person brandishing a baton. This person stormed into the room, exclaiming with a theatrical flourish, "Where is he? Who dares to harm my one and only darling? Where is he?" The sudden entrance and dramatic outburst left Kirti in a state of mild shock.

The admin, with a composed demeanor, quickly corrected the person, saying, "It's not a 'he,' it's a 'she.'" Her frustration was evident as she added with a hint of anger, tightly clutching her fists, "And who are you calling 'darling' here?"

The person, sensing the mistake, quickly retracted their initial dramatic stance and said with a friendly tone, "My apologies, I thought there might have been a thief or some troublemaker in the room. By the way, who is this new face?" The tension diffused, and the atmosphere lightened as the situation became clearer.

Kirti, eager to make amends, swiftly responded, "I'm Kirti, the new member here." The person, now recognizing her, responded with a smile, "Oh, you're the one joining my team." The abrupt encounter had turned into a moment of recognition and camaraderie.

"Hello, I'm Robin, and I'll be your team leader. It's a pleasure to meet you," Robin introduced himself with a friendly smile. He continued, a playful curiosity in his voice as he placed a hand on his chin, "By the way, why did you arrive in the afternoon?"

Kirti, slightly flustered, quickly explained, "I apologize for being late; I encountered some unexpected issues."

"Oh, don't worry," Robin assured with a smile, creating a sense of relief, but his expression suddenly turned serious as he continued, "because it will be your last day." The abrupt shift in his tone left Kirti feeling a wave of uncertainty and concern about her job.

The admin, who had been observing the exchange, interjected from behind, saying, "Hey, don't frighten her. Let's guide her to the manager's office instead." The admin's words and tone aimed to provide reassurance and support to Kirti during this uncertain situation. She then turned her attention to Kirti and inquired with a friendly tone, "Kirti, are you feeling lucky?"

Confused by the admin's question, Kirti furrowed her brow and asked, "Why?" She was genuinely puzzled. The admin patiently explained, "If you're lucky, you'll find only the manager in his office, and he'll forgive you, advising you not to repeat the same mistake." The admin's words aimed to clarify the possible outcomes and offer Kirti some guidance.

In a more serious tone, the admin continued, "If luck isn't on your side, you'll have to face the assistant manager, and that's when Robin's words may become a reality." As Kirti's anxiety heightened, she nervously inquired, "Why?" Her curiosity stemmed from a desire to comprehend the potential consequences of this encounter with the assistant manager.

From behind, Robin's voice took on an ominous tone as he asked Kirti, "Have you ever encountered a real witch in real life?" Kirti replied with a hint of unease, "Yes, I have." Robin, seemingly surprised, responded in a normal tone, "Oh, you have?" But then, he swiftly transitioned back to an eerie tone as he continued, "However, have you seen the queen of witches?" Kirti, now genuinely apprehensive, replied, "No," with a nervous gulp. The atmosphere became tinged with suspense and mystery.

"Then you'll encounter one today, if luck is not on your side," Robin declared ominously. Kirti gulped again, her apprehension growing. She turned her head toward the admin, who confirmed Robin's statement with a solemn nod, adding a layer of seriousness to the situation.

With an air of mystery, Robin declared, "Let's head to the place where both hell and heaven meet." He proceeded to open the door of the presentation room and gestured for Kirti to follow. As she trailed behind him, Kirti couldn't shake the feeling that she was embarking on an adventure, with Robin as her guiding NPC, leading her toward a palace where the most formidable witch awaited with a sinister cackle. The anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable.

Robin led Kirti to the manager's door and wished her "Best of luck" before leaving her alone. As she stood before the door, Kirti's imagination ran wild once more, envisioning the possibility of the queen of witches awaiting her behind it. With a deep breath, she mentally encouraged herself, whispering, "You can do it."

With newfound determination, she faced the ground and knocked politely on the door, asking, "May I come in?" The mixture of anxiety and courage in the air was palpable as she waited for a response.

She was unlucky. In that room both manager and assistant manager were present and the manager told her, "Come in." As she slowly walking into the room she was cursing her bad luck. In her mind's eye, she could almost see herself with tears in her eyes, metaphorically backed into a corner, grappling with the predicament she found herself in.

The manager, with a polite but inquisitive tone, inquired, "May I know who you are?" Kirti responded with respect, saying, "Certainly, sir. I'm Kirti." As she spoke, she extended the blue file containing her appointment letter and other essential documents, hoping to make a good impression.

The sight of Kirti left both the manager and assistant manager utterly surprised. In a sharp tone, the assistant manager queried, "Are you the new employee?" Kirti replied respectfully, "Yes, ma'am." However, her response only seemed to intensify the assistant manager's frustration. She placed her hand on the desk, her voice growing louder as she scolded, "Why are you arriving so late? Do you think this is your house, and you can come and go as you please?" The assistant manager's irritation was unmistakable as she addressed Kirti's tardiness.

Kirti, feeling the weight of the situation, lowered her gaze, her voice trembling with fear as she admitted, "I am sorry. I encountered a small issue in the morning, which caused my delay." The assistant manager pressed further, asking, "What is the reason behind your late arrival? Please, be honest." The asst. manager's insistence on the truth was evident, and it made Kirti even more anxious to explain herself.

The assistant manager's high-pitched tone continued to unnerve Kirti. Her anxiety intensified, causing her legs and hands to tremble, and tears welled up in her eyes. With a quivering voice, Kirti finally confessed, "I overslept." The admission left the assistant manager astonished, and she exclaimed, "What!" in sheer disbelief at the simplicity of the reason for Kirti's tardiness.

In an effort to explain herself, Kirti quickly added, "I'm really sorry, ma'am. The thing is, yesterday, I was engrossed in a game on my PlayStation, and my mom called me. She advised me to sleep early to ensure I'd wake up on time for work."

Kirti continued, explaining her situation, "While I was engrossed in the game, I happened to check the time, and it was 9:25 PM. I told myself I'd play for just another 5 minutes and then sleep at exactly 9:30. But, you won't believe it, I ended up playing continuously until 3:30 AM without any breaks. It was only when exhaustion finally caught up with me that I realized the time, and I decided to skip my sleep for the night and come straight to the office." Her admission conveyed both regret and the recognition of her lapse in judgment.

Kirti continued, "Unknowingly, I fell into a deep slumber. My mom had tried calling me, but my phone was on silent, and I didn't hear it. When I finally woke up and checked the time, it was already 12 noon. I rushed to get ready and ran to the office as if there were no tomorrow." Her words conveyed the mix of panic and haste that followed her unexpected late awakening.
