Just trust me
Most everyone was done eating and had shoved their plates toward the center of the table, exception being Thor and Bruce, the group was listening to Fable tell them the story that included her and Bruce going to the same schools, Leonard and Loki would exchange minor banter when they found something funny in Fable's story, Bruce was just adding small details between bites while she spoke.
"Now I have a question about you though." Clint chimed in after she finished talking about being Bruce's friend in the past, she hummed in reply, "Why is your name Fable, is it an alias or something?" She heard something just as he asked her that, "Everyone, hands on the table please." She urged, A few of them quietly asked her why, she just waved their concern away quickly, "Just trust me." She whispered.
Everyone did as she said, with that she herself grabbed the edge of the table and surged power though it, speeding up the group just enough that they could defend themselves if need be, herself on the other hand moved faster than they could comprehend even when they were sped up too, only seeing a trail of blue light in her wake she she moved as she shoved her chair away from the table.
She had heard someone in the room, moving too quickly, too quietly for anyone not of Haldin blood to hear, she knew the third brother wanted her dead, so she had to make sure that any possible threats were taken care of, she recognised the footsteps but she still didn't trust anything, especially since they were about to walk behind her, her actions were only to trap them against the wall and possibly incapacitate the person if necessary.
When she slid her chair out, everyone around her was sped up just a bit but they were moving in slow motion in comparison to her, she seen the spacial energy magic of the Haldin Order that allowed them to move without being seen, flowing from one spot in the room, just behind where she was just sitting, in one hand she held an energy dagger in the other she grabbed a fork from the table.
She used her own spacial energy magic to phase from her bathrobe into a simple outfit of jeans and a dark shirt under her hooded cloak and the signiture mask she always used to hide her identity before she attempted to face the unknown foe.
Gracefully Fable rammed her leg into the nearly invisible person that was trespassing, the figure slammed against the wall breaking the phase, showing a short woman in a long, white trench coat with soil brown hair, lightly tanned skin and deep brown eyes.
Fable charged the woman that was now against the wall, as she slammed into the woman she dropped all the time magic she was using, so the group around the table could clearly see what was happening.
"Holy shit!" The girl in the trench coat nervously laughed once Fable's energy dagger was less than an inch away from the bridge of her nose, her other arm pressed firmly against her ribs, holding her against the wall, "What the hell?" Bruce asked with surprise embedded into his expression, the two just ignored his and a few others questions from around the room as the girl in the trenchcoat started to speak again "I forgot how fucking scary you can be." The girl joked as her shoulders relaxed.
"Then don't try sneaking behind me." Fable said in a modified voice due to her mask still being on, "Is that anyway to greet your little sister?" The girl pouted.
Fable shook the hood of her cloak down, vanished her dagger then removed her face mask before she spoke again, "Why are you here?" Fable asked, her arm still pressed against her sisters ribs, everyone in the room was silently watching the exchange, Steve, Natasha, Clint and Thor were all four standing by now, not trusting the stranger that just appeared out of thin air.
"I'm here for the pancakes before the beefy prince finishes them off." The girl laughed as she sent Thor a sweet little smile, "Now could you be a sweetie and maybe remove the fork from between my ribs, it kinda hurts." The girl exhaled, "No blood please, new threads." She smiled as Fable stepped back and waved her hand in the direction of the fork, making blue light swirl around the handle, the blood that was staining her jacket just seemed to disappear, the fork moved from its place then hit the floor with a clang as soon as Fable closed her hand.
Everyone around the table was staring in awe, especially Bruce whose mouth was hanging open, "Now, since she didn't answer your question, I will," the girl started as she limped over to the table to sit down, holding her side where the fork had impaled her, "Her name is Fable because she was born of myth and legend, just like mine is Noble because I was born of royalty and fame." She smiled at the group as she grabbed a piece of bacon off of a serving plate.
Fable just watched quietly for a minute, "Okay, this hurts, I need something to drink." Noble whined as she gribbed her side again, "You need that checked out?" Tony asked as he finally gathered his bearings, "Nope, just the phantom pain, comes with getting an injury fully reversed, only lasts about an hour usually." She gritted her teeth.
Seconds later Fable returned with a can of sparkling water, no one even noticed that she had left the room until she returned, handing Noble her drink, "Can you guys maybe stop staring at me, it's a little rude." Noble chuckled.
"How are you sisters?" Natasha questioned the two as she looked between them, noticing all the ways they certainly did not look alike, "Same father." They both answered simultaneously as Noble held the can out toward Fable, non verbally asking her to open it for her.
Fable opened the can then disappeared, only to reappear seconds later with a plate in one hand and a large burlap sack in the other, "No weapons at the table, no pancakes until you hand them over either." Fable warned, gaining an eye roll from Noble.
First she removed an antique six shooter from her waistband, a few throwing stars from a small holster hidden on the calve of her leg, then an arm rig and a small pistol from up her sleeve, a taser from her trenchcoat's pocket, even the sharpened knitting needles from the bun in her hair, "Are those mine?" Fable questioned as she pulled them from her hair, "Are you gonna yell at me if I lie and say no?" Noble sighed, just gaining an eye roll from Fable.
Natasha, Clint, Leonard and Steve were just watching the entire exchange, feeling extremely intrigued by the stranger, Tony was watching with a worried expression, whispering to himself about why any one person would need so many random and physically different weapons.
Next Noble removed a gun holster from her belt, a handful of knives came from her left boot, another antique six shooter from her right boot, she was laying each weapon on the table in front of her, Fable was grabbing them, unloading the guns, sheathing the knifes, placing them carefully inside of the bag.
Everyone was silently watching as one by one Noble pulled dozens of weapons from her person and placed them on the table, the looks on their faces varied from scared, to confused, to impressed, Fable was used to her sister having an affinity toward all things sharp, shiny or dangerous.
A few more random weapons were removed when Tony just had to make a smart ass joke, "Aren't you going to take away her fork too?" He laughed, waiting for a snarky remark in return, but instead he received a pleading look from Noble, "No, please don't say that!" She begged, "She did once, after the pitchfork incident." She admitted.
"What was the pitchfork incident?" Steve was genuinely curious, "I may have, just accidentally impaled her in the thigh with a pitchfork in the Renaissance age." Noble chuckled, "Impaled, my ass, you fucking skewered me." Fable corrected with a bit of venom in her voice, "She still has the scar." Noble smiled, "I was more upset that you destroyed my cold gun replica when you stabbed me than about the actual injury."
Fable added.
"Cold gun?" Leonard questioned, "Yes, cold gun, like the one you had, only more modified, power stability adjustments and such." Fable smiled, "It's great for making ice rinks out of ponds!" Noble beamed as she removed said cold gun replica from her thigh and laid it on the table, intimidating most of the heroes around the room, "What is it with you taking my stuff?" Fable huffed, Noble just ignored her and continued to pull two more knifes out of apparently nowhere.
Fable handed her sister the plate reluctantly, "Sound busters too." Fable demanded shortly after taking inventory of the weapons in the bag, Noble sighed in reply, she shook both of her hands once, purple light formed around her fingers revealing a set of weapons that resembled brass knuckles but they looked like they weren't physically there, they were purple and looked airy, like you could try touching them and your hand would pass right though them.
She reluctantly placed them on the table, Tony just had to know, "What are those?" He had an unreadable expression on his face as he asked, "I call them my sound busters, made of an aerated solid called Staran, it's an element that only exists on Alfheim, in deep underground caverns, the Dwarves mine it from below the cliffs one day a year, before they celebrate with the elves trading ale for Staran." she smirked.
"It's harder than diamond, lighter than aluminium, these are engineered to carry high pitched sound frequencies on their surfaces, and when you're wearing them, if you hit them together-" Noble was about to tap they two weapons together but Fable cut her sister's explanation off before she could give them an example of what they could do, "Not inside!" Fable hissed as she took one from her.
"Fine, I'll just show them the video." Noble mumbled as she placed the remaining sound buster on the table, retrieving a very futuristic looking phone from her pocket and laying it face up on the table, and with a wave of her hand a hologram popped up from the phones screen, gaining whispered questions around the room, mainly from Thor, and Steve to Tony.
They asked questions as Noble went though her phone, swiping by selfies with random historical figures, mythical creatures, futuristic buildings on different worlds, beautiful cityscapes, pictures of night skies, she ignored the questions while Fable answered a select few of them.
Soon enough she came to the video she was searching for and pulled it up, enlarging the hologram, making it easily viewed from all angles before she pressed play.
Video content:
"Okay you two, only your first powers and one weapon choice for this practice session." A regal sounding mans voice said, "Let's do it." The younger version of Noble said, the camera panned out and there stood a younger Fable, they only real difference was the lack of her silver hair, in its place was the same shade of brown that her sister was sporting, and the absence of scars on her shoulders, neck and arms was another clear difference.
The two siblings took an introductory bow, as is Haldin tradition for any battle against another of Haldin blood, Noble holding a purple ball of pulsating magic in front of her, Fable in much the same position but holding a pink ball of magic instead, they both vanished their magic then took a knee before they charged each other as soon as the mans voice told them to start.
A few seconds later the two were sparring, dodging each other's punches and blocking kicks, Fable brought forth her energy daggers after her sister had landed a knee to her ribs, she was slashing rapidly at Noble, missing each time by mere inches.
Finally, with a quick shake of her hands, Noble's sound busters appeared on her hands, and the next swing of a dagger, Noble caught it between her sound busters, freezing Fable in her steps, with a glint in her eyes, she forced her sound busters together, crushing the energy dagger, as the two sound busters finally touched.
A sound resonated from the metals touching, a high pitched squeal, the sound throwing Fable against the wall across the room, kickback knocking Noble flat on her rear as she slid across the floor, "Are you two okay?" The mans voice asked as he came into the screen just before the video cut off.
☆☆☆
Everyone was watching the video attentively, with the exception of Noble who was stuffing her face, Leonard, who was disassembling the cold gun, Tony who was examining each piece carefully, and Fable who was explaining how it worked, "That guy with the brown hair, who was he?" Clint spoke up, "Our dad, he had a really long name that I can't remember." Noble announced before she shoved another bite of food into her mouth.
Fable handed the screwdriver she was holding to Tony where he was trying to put the cold gun back together before she turned her attention back to everyone else, "Sir Alexander Bartholomew Latavius Haldin." Noble mumbled an agreement, "So he was a knight?" Thor asked attentively, "Sort of." Fable shrugged before she stood from the spot in the floor she was crouching in with her cloak in hand.
Bruce looked up just as she stood and seen the scars on her shoulders, arms and neck gaining a gasp from him, causing her to look over to him, "Don't worry, you should see the other guys." Noble assured him when she sensed the tension when he noticed the array of scars on her sister, "Your friend is a fighter, she proudly shows off the battle scars like any great warrior should." Thor assured him.
"Why is your hair grey now?" Natasha finally asked, "Not grey, silver, there's a difference-" Fable started to answer but was cut off by her sister, "She seduced a siren then got cursed with the sirens silver hair, its silver until the person meets their soulmate then it slowly turns to their natural hair color shade over time, curse for sirens since they eat the men they meet, supposed to be a gift to othe-" this time Fable cut off her sister.
"I did not seduce the siren, I spared her life so she repaid me." She growled, "And you just happened to come home that day with a smile on your face that made me think of our uncle Carlos." Noble laughed, "What's the story behind your uncle Carlos?" Steve cautiously asked.
"He slept with a gorgon." Both of the siblings answered simultaneously without breaking eye contact, causing Leonard to get choked on the water he was drinking, Bruce's eyes got big, and even Tony gave the two a certain look.
"Like from the myths, Medusa with the snakes for hair, how did he do that without turning to stone?" Tony asked as he put down the part he was putting back into place on the cold gun, "He was blind." Fable just shrugged as if it were the most common thing in the world.
Authors note:
This chapter was a lot longer than I originally intended but I just really wanted to add the bit about their uncle Carlos in there so I kept typing until I could fit it in there.
Also I'm sorry you had to wait so long for this chapter I just haven't been able to write very often lately.
