Chapter 5: Follow the Rules; Rules Were Made to be Broken

Okay so I actually had a lot of trouble coming up with a title for this chapter so I'm sorry if it's not good.

Warning: Birdflash fluff and Batfam drama as well as an angry Bruce Wayne

Enjoy!

**Dick POV

I wake up to a warm solid surface against my back, a pair of arms wrapped around my waist, and soft snoring in my ear.

I see the bright light around my room, the puffy white comforter, and the soft gentle sounds of Wally's breathing in my ear.

I stretch a little and turn over, pressing my side into Wally's chest. I smell his faded cologne, a light manly touch. The fabric softener he uses, the old spice shampoo he stole from Jason's room when he took a shower yesterday. I smile lightly and snuggle close to him, taking his warmth.

His warm safe arms wrap around me, his fingers running over my sides and one across my back now as I stuff my face from the light into his shoulder. "Mmm" I groan lightly as I stretch a leg out. "Walls...?"

I open my eyes a little more. "...Wally..." I hum happily.

"Wait... What... Wally!" I sit up a little to look at him clearly.

'He's so handsome, it makes my heart stutter. His hands are so warm around me.'

"Mmm Dick, shut up and go back to sleep...."

I gasp a little, my heart pounding. "W-Walls...W-Wake up...please...?" I squeak a little the more I speak.

Wally cracks a green eye open and gives me an annoyed look. "I woke up in the middle of the night....morning....something...and you were shivering like crazy. I was too tired and lazy to go try and find another blanket so I just used my own body heat to warm you up."

I blush wildly. "Th-Thanks Wally... I... Thanks..." I look away.

"Mhmm.... No thanks needed.... Now shut up and go back to sleep." He starts to tug me back down still watching me with a single eye. "Seriously dude it's only 6:30, and now I'm starting to get cold. Why the heck do you even keep your room so freezing." He grumbles and shuts both his eyes again.

My face feels warm. "O-Oh Okay..." I let him pull me down and I snuggle close to him, welcoming his heat. "I-I don't keep it that cold... I don't really have control of the thermostat..."

He buries his face in my shoulder and mumbles tiredly. "Dude that is such bullshit. You're room is like the coldest one in this place."

I smile lightly. "I think it is just because you are warmer on a cellular level... Your cells move so fast that you just..." I quiet down when I look at his handsome face.

His eyes are open again and looking at me. "No, your room is just ridiculously cold. I bet you keep it this way so all the ladies cuddle up to you, huh?" He has a sleepy teasing smirk on his face.

"Well I'm sorry to ruin your fantasies, but I don't cuddle with anyone. If you want to fix this problem you'll have to discuss that with Alfred." I sigh and close my eyes hoping deep down that he is watching me, though I know he is most likely too sleepy to give me that snarky look he always does.

"Ha! You not cuddling with anyone? That is the biggest lie I have ever heard Richard Grayson."

"Well, aside from you... no one...." I shrug lightly.

"Wow...I'm thoroughly impressed. You actually just admitted to your own lie."

"Ha, you caught me..." I say quietly, turning away from him a little.

"Figuratively and literally if I do say so myself." His arms tighten around me. There's the snark and sass.

My heart sputters and I find myself holding onto his arms lightly, touching his hands and hunkering down into the warmth, feeling his chest against my back. "Shush you..."

He chuckles softly behind me. "Mmm nah.. You first."

I turn a little and press myself closer. "Um no, you shut up." I give him more sass, but delivered with a soft grin.

"Haha nope. You first dude."

"Nope! You!" I laugh happily, trying to muffle myself with the fluffy covers.

"No way! You!" Wally smiles and laughs back.

I scoot closer as he stares into my eyes and grins, his hands wrapping around me as I snuggle in closer.

Everything becomes almost static, his smile lures me in as he and I move closer to one another. I feel his soft warm breath just on the tip of my nose, his warm hands curling around my sides to hold me securely.

Everything feels right in the world.

Then the bedroom door starts rattling as something heavy hits it from the other side.

"Gray! Son! Wake! The! Hell! Up!!"

It's Damian....repeatedly kicking my bedroom door...

"It is nearly 7 O'clock and for some damn reason I was sent to wake you and the peasant up!!"

I groan lightly and shove my face into Walls's chest. "Nooooo...."

Wally lets out a frustrated huff and grumbles. "I don't care if that kid is the son of Batman, I swear if he calls me peasant one more time I am going to..."

"Damian go away! Give us until 8 or something!" I call to him.

He just kicks my door harder at that, its a miracle the wood hasn't started to splinter yet. "Father wants you downstairs for breakfast!! Pennyworth is making pancakes because your stupid friend is over!"

A chill travels down my spine, making me press closer to Wally. "Kill me."

"I'll join you..... After I get some pancakes though." His stomach growls.

I lift my head and look at Wally. "It'll be okay, dad will probably just scold me like he did last time... You won't get in trouble."

"GRAYSON GET UP NOW OR I WILL HAVE TITUS SHIT IN YOUR FAVOURITE PAIR OF SHOES!!!!" Damian practically screeches.

I push myself up with a deep seated groan, doing a somersault off of the bed and opening the bedroom door, staring down at the kid. "I swear to god you were created to make all of us want to cry... I'm here... What now?"

He stares up at me with a frown on his face. "Breakfast." He turns and leaves as suddenly as he came.

Wally watches from my bed as Damian angrily stomps away. "I don't know which one I'm more afraid of... Your dad...or your youngest brother."

I turn back and look at Wally as he lays in my bed. "They share the same blood, one isn't scarier than the other..." I smile and walk over to him.

"Good point." He stretches and sits up with a dorky smile on his face. "So. I don't know about you but I could totally go for some pancakes right about now."

"Well then get up already dummy!" I smile at him before looking down and seeing that I never took off his sweatshirt, and that I am just in some boxers. "Oh... I should probably change..."

"Nah, just put some pants on or something." He waves me off as he stands up. "I'm just gonna stay in what I'm already wearing."

I blush. "But, what about your sweatshirt?"

"Wouldn't be the first time." He shrugs it off like its no big deal and heads out of my room. "You coming or what?"

My face gets warm. "Coming."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we walk downstairs and into the dining hall it's actually quiet for once.
Damian is feeding his pets. Tim is looking over his science textbook as he stuffs food into his mouth. And Bruce is drinking coffee as he reads the day's newspaper.
I keep my head down, expecting Bruce to scold me like I'm a 10 year old for having a friend over without permission.
'I'm 25, why am I still so anxious about breaking the manor rules. Come on Dick, get a hold of yourself man.'
Wally is visibly vibrating from nervousness next me.
I, to my own surprise, touch my hand to his and let mine brush against his as we walk towards the table. "Remember, he's upset with me, not you..." I whisper close behind Wally.
He swallows and nods as we both sit down. Bruce is really the only person he has ever truly feared. His bloodline--- Damian is next in line.
Bruce clears his throat and sets his newspaper down as he looks up to glare at me and Wally. He opens his mouth to speak. "I-"
"Por todo lo que es bueno y santo, ¿podría alguien traerme una jodida bolsa de hielo y un maldito vaso de whisky?"[1] Everyone turns to look as Jason stumbles in. He looks like absolute shit, more accurately like death warmed over, and is holding a hand against the side of his head as he groans in pain.
"Nice of you to join us Jason. I would like to remind you that we speak English in this household." Bruce looks less than pleased.
"Ugggghhh......not now viejo[2]. You can yell at me later...nngh..." He winces in pain and squints his eyes. "It feels like my head is going to split open..... And this isn't the typical hangover kind of splitting either. I swear it feels like there's a huge bump on the back of my head and I have no fucking idea why because I am like 99.9% sure that I didn't get into any drunken bar fights last night." He stumbles over to the table and all but collapses into the nearest chair.
For once I am very happy and thankful for his nuisance and interruption.
"Oh yeah, that's probably from the baseball bat I knocked you unconscious with last night." Tim says nonchalantly as he downs half of his fourth cup of coffee.
'Has he really already had three cups full of coffee since I walked in?'
I sigh quietly and sit down, avoiding anyone's eyes, especially dad's.
Jason stares down at Tim with wide wild eyes. "Why the fuck do you have a baseball bat in your room!?!"
"How else am I going to protect myself from drunken creeps that wander into my room with no pants on?" Tim smirks into his coffee mug as Damian can't help but let out a small snicker at the older's reply.
"I-that's not-...!" Jason stammers with his mouth agape as Tim raises an eyebrow at him. "............shit. Touché replacement, touché."
I take a small glance at Wally who almost smiles over his anxiousness, but the smile quickly vanishes when Bruce clears his throat. "Boys."
Everyone stops talking. Damian looks up obediently. Tim looks up dumbly with his mouth full of pancakes. Jason just grumbles and places the ice pack Alfred had brought him against the back of his aching head. And Wally... Wally freezes from nerves and grips tightly at my hand underneath the table.
My face gets warm, but I squeeze back, naturally, a silent gasp escaping my lips.
Nobody says anything, all of us staring at Bruce at the head of the table.
I look up slowly, hoping my cheeks aren't too red.
Jason lets out a low whistle as he takes a bite of bacon. "Well...This is certainly starting to get awkward."
Bruce looks at all of us. "As I seem to remind you time and time again, being quiet and respectful is a fundamental part of being a good man, and a good hero." He says calmly.
"Well if it's what makes a good man than I suppose lady Dick is out of the picture." Jason snickers as he wiggles his eyebrows at me.
I didn't think anything could sound so sexual. "You make it sound like we..." I mumble, my voice fading away unheard.
I shoot a glare at him and hope that no one can see my hand holding Wally's tightly.
"At least Dick is actually a good hero unlike some drunk moron we know..." Tim mumbles into his coffee mug while glancing up at Jay.
Jason growls at Tim. "Hey watch your fucking mouth Timothy, I never had to come back to this damn place ya know, fucking Replacement!"
I give Wally's hand a small squeeze, feeling his quick pulse in my fingertips. I spell out letters into his palm. A-R-E-Y-O-U-O-K-A-Y-?
I feel his warm fingertips slowly trace over my palm, making my heart shutter. Y-E-A-H-J-U-S-T-N-E-R-V-O-U-S-A-N-D-H-U-N-G-R-Y-!
I chuckle lightly, not wanting his fingers to stop moving, it's just about the slowest thing he does.
"If anyone should watch their mouth I believe it's you Todd." Damian finally speaks up.
Both Jason and Tim turn to glare at Damian, speaking in tandem. "No one asked you demon brat!"
Just before a full blown war can begin between my younger brothers Alfred walks into the room and clears his throat. "Ahem!"
I look up, instinctively intertwining my fingers with Wally's.
"As much as I hate to disturb this lovely family breakfast I do believe that it is time for you to leave for school Master Timothy." Alfred says as he holds up Tim's backpack and a packed lunch.
Tim stares at Alfred for about a minute before swallowing the food in his mouth and checking the time on his phone. "Oh crap! I totally lost track of time!! Oh man at this rate I'm gonna be late for my midterm!!" Tim panics as he quickly packs up his belongings.
"The car is already out front and waiting." Alfred says as Tim grabs his bag and lunch from the man.
"Thanks Alfred you're the best!" Tim shouts as he races outside to the car.
"But of course sir." Alfred sighs and turns briefly to give Bruce a pointed look before following after the teenager.
The rest of us turn our heads and move our eyes to follow. But dad quickly brings us back to his attention. "As I was saying..."
The stern tone in his voice raises my arm hairs and sends a chill up my spine.
"Father?" Damian lifts his chin in superiority, earning a discreet eye roll from just about everyone of us.
Wally leans over to whisper at me, eyeing Bruce nervously. "Maybe I shouldn't have stayed for breakfast after all."
I give his hand a squeeze. "It'll be okay, you won't be the one getting ripped open today."
Bruce continues talking. "...being quiet and respectful is a fundamental part of being a good man, and a good hero." He turns his eyes to Wally and I. "I also distinctly remember saying that Metas are not allowed in this household, no matter who they might be, without my permission."
I try to swallow the rock in my throat. "Dad... I...." I feel my spine tingle and my hands get a little clammy. "Please..."
I feel Wally's breathing change in disappointment and worry. I-T-O-L-D-Y-O-U! He draws into my palm almost too quickly to comprehend.
"No," Bruce's voice gets low and scratchy like it does when he puts on the cowl, making my stomach flip. "We have rules Richard, you know that, and as long as you are living under this roof you are not to break them under any circumstances." He pauses when my mouth opens a little.
"Bruce you don't und-" he cuts me off.
"We have rules Richard, and time and time again you disobey me. Friendship does not save lives, and friendship will not keep you alive--"
"No Bruce, you're wrong, my friendship does keep me alive, it makes me happy!" I stand and take a deep breath, holding Wally's hand tightly for support and strength to speak my mind.
Jason and Damian silently watch with wide eyes and gaping mouths as I continue to talk back to Bruce.
"But you wouldn't understand that would you? Because you aren't really alive, you're a cold shell of a person, you don't even know what happiness is!" I bark at him, tears welling in my eyes.
"Time and time again you deny me, you deny me helping people on an emotional level, telling me that my feelings for people make me weak, make me vulnerable, well fuck that! F-f-f-f-fuck you!" I cover my face with my arm and take a shaky breath, hating the tears that are falling down my cheeks.
"This is why I left and went to Blüdhaven and became Nightwing! YOU are the reason I left!" I sob.
Someone chokes on food and suddenly all eyes are on me.
Wally's hand grips mine protectively. I hear Bruce's voice rumble in his chest, he stands up and white knuckles the end of the table. "You WHAT?!"
His tone makes everyone flinch, even Damian. I look up at him, trying to appear strong and brave. "That's right Bruce."
He pushes back his chair harshly and walks around toward me, standing with his chest to my shoulders, him being a few inches taller than me. "I expected better from you, I expected you to lead your brothers and be strong, but you have only shown me that you are not up to the task. I appreciate all that you've done since Damian got here but until you earn your place here again, I must ask you to leave." His voice does not sound the slightest bit sad.
I stare straight ahead, Damian's eyes meeting mine, tears threatening to well in them. He looks away quickly, always trying to hide his feelings so Bruce won't notice. I hate that.
Even Jason looked utterly surprised having always seen me as the goody two shoes kind of guy that never seemed to do anything wrong.
I turn and stand close to Bruce, looking up into his dark angry eyes. "You'll regret this, you'll realize that not only are you losing a partner, you are losing someone you love. And you don't even care." I growl. For a moment his eyes soften to show me a facade of fatherly affection, but it vanishes and is replaced with a firm hand and a push to my shoulder, shoving me away from the table. He shoots Wally a look that says "don't make me ask twice", causing Wally to get up and stand close beside me.
"Pack your things and leave. You are not welcome here now." He sounds as cold as ice, and refuses to look at me. He turns and retreats to his study to be alone like the weak, cruel man he has always shown himself to be.
Jason lets out a cough. "Just another typical monday morning at the Wayne household huh."
I turn toward my brothers. "You're all next if he doesn't learn to feel anything." I coldly speak, turning and not looking back. I take Wally's hand hoping it will keep me from crying again. "C'mon Walls... We don't n-n-need t-th-hem..." My voice wavers as tears dribble down my cheeks.
"Woah hold on there Dickie-bird, not so fast." Jason is up out of his chair and slinging an arm around my shoulders, leaving Damian in the dining hall by himself.
I stop in my tracks but don't turn, I feel Wally watching me intently, with worry.
"Look man, I get it. You're not use to the big man yelling at you like this and kicking you out. But trust me, it's really not that big of a deal. I mean hell it happens to me all the time!"
I turn and look at him. "You don't know what it's like, so don't pretend that you do. This is different, I am different." I hiss and walk again.
He stops me again, his hands on my shoulders and looks into my eyes. No jokes, all seriousness. "Richard. I'm the son that died then came back to life as an insane murderous vigilante. Try honestly telling me that I don't know what it's like to be yelled at by him like that. To know that Bruce is disappointed in you and sees you as a lost cause. That you, yourself, see you as a lost cause! So yeah, Dick, I understand what you're feeling right now."
I sigh lowly and look back at Damian in the empty dining hall. "I just need to go." I push past Jason and walk up the stairs, hoping that Wally will keep up.
Unbeknownst to me Jason steps in front of Wally and blocks his path. "Woah! And just where do you think you are going Wallace?" He puts emphasis on his name, an unreadable expression on his face as he stops the older man with a hand placed on his chest.
Wally turns and looks at him intently. "What do you want?"
Jason narrows his eyes a bit. "Do you seriously think I'm going to let you follow him? Haven't you already done enough here. Or did you already forget that the old man just kicked him out?"
"Excuse me, he is my best friend... He needs me more than he needs this place."
"Yeah, well. I hate to break it to ya bud, but I think his best friend just caused him to get kicked out of his own home." Jay practically growls.
Wally returns a glare, "Shut up."
"Make me." He gives the older male a smug and cocky grin.
Wally gets a look in his eyes that only enemies see, a fire of passion. "Don't test me... You don't want to."
I hear them from upstairs, arguing. I never thought Wally cared so much, I mean I know he cares, but this much? It's different.
"And you don't want to test me. I may not want to admit it, but whether I like it or not Mr. Pretty Boy is family and I'm not just going to stand around and see him suffer like this."
"Just let me fix this." Walls turns and marches up the steps, I get up and hurry to my room before he gets there.
Jason grabs Wally by the arm and pulls back. "I said you're not going up there."
Wally twists and smacks his hand away in a blur. "Don't fucking touch me." His voice is sharp and deep, almost scary.
"Oh yeah? Whatcha gonna do tough guy?" Jason is toying with him.
"I'll take you down so fast that you won't even be able to raise your fists." He hisses.
"Hehe... Sorry, but I don't really see you as all that." In a flash, ironically so, Jason has a hunting knife pressed against the older's throat. "Now. I won't say it again. Leave or I will make you. You've already done enough for one day."
Walls only smiles with anger. "You'll be sorry, he needs me and you'll be sorry."
"Please, he needs a lot of things. And right now, you are not one of them." Jason removes his knife, giving a twisted smile of his own.
Wally opens his mouth to speak but quiets down. "Fine, have it your way. But if you hurt him or make this worse I swear to god..." He growls.
"Please. I've been beaten and broken and tortured. Hell I've even died before. So what, pray tell, could you possibly do to me that hasn't already been done before. Face it, I'm not afraid of you. Never will be. So threaten me all you like, it won't do anything." Jason shoves Wally away, daring him to do something, anything.
Wally glares, fire in his eyes. "I'd kill you again, and make sure you never come back, I'd make sure nothing remains."
I hear Wally from upstairs, his voice sending chills through my bones. I never knew he could ever sound like that, ever sound so protective or violent.
I walk over to watch them from on the balcony, making sure to drag my hand over the railing where they can see it, knowing that I am there. I slam my door, pack a bag and hop out my window, climbing up onto the roof to look over the distant sunny city. "I could just leave, but to where? Maybe I could go back to Blüdhaven? No, impossible, that would require me having to buy a new apartment and Bruce was the one who helped me buy the first one. Ugh why did mine have to one of them, god damn arsonists." I frown as I think back to 5 months ago when my apartment burned down. It was a serial arsonist targeting apartment complexes and mine just so happened to be one of 8 buildings that were destroyed, there were a lot of victims but thankfully no actual criticals or casualties. Still though, it left me homeless and I was forced to return to Wayne Manor as a result. I guess the only upside to it was that I didn't lose too many things in the fire since a lot of my stuff was already at the manor with how often I had been staying over while helping to train Damian.
'And now I'm back to being homeless....'
Jason just sneers at Wally. "Good luck trying to. Anyway I've got better and more important things to do, so if I were you I'd leave before Bruce finds you still here." With that Jason turns around and runs up the stairs and into my room.
"For once he's right. You should leave before Father comes back West." Damian is standing behind Wally with Alfred gathered in his arms.
Wally glares, he doesn't want to glare at the kid, but he can't help it. He turns and starts up the steps, stopping, feeling his cells seem to heat up, his teeth grind without his control and he turns and sharply punches the wall. His knuckles crack and they feel the wall and wood and brick crack and splinter under the pressure. He punches again, the veins in his neck protruding with rage, again. Again.
His knuckles begin to bleed, faster and faster before already starting to slowly heal, his eyes flare with flames with each strike.
Damian, Damian Al Ghul Wayne, actually flinches at the ginger's sudden and unusual display of rage, his arms just barely tightening around Alfred.
Wally suddenly stops, his bloody knuckles an inch from striking the wall again. He turns his head a little and looks down at Damian who stands watching beneath him.
He looks forward and walks upstairs away from the large bloody hole that is left in the wall.
"Hey asshole! Think you forgot something!" Suddenly a bundle of cloth is thrown into Wally's face as Jason stands at the top of the steps smirking before turning on his heel and walking into my room shutting the door behind himself.
Wally looks at the bundle of cloth as it falls into his hands. "What the..."
He growls lowly, not sure how the ass got his clothes. "Thanks..." He, quicker than light, puts on his clothes, tucking the new bundle of clothes under his arm before taking one last look around and then leaving quickly.
[1]- For all that is good and holy, could someone bring me a fucking ice pack and a damn glass of whiskey?
Well that was certainly a drama filled chapter wasn't it?
So unfortunately I have a lot of family issues going on right now concerning my grandma and it's not leaving me with a whole lot of free time. Meaning that for the next while new chapters will probably be posted every week/two weeks, possibly even three weeks. I'll try to get them out as soon as possible but no promises. Sorry guys.
Anyway I hope you all continue to enjoy the story.
