Chpt 6: All Is Fair In Love And War
Three Years Later:
All is fair in love and war. That is something i heard long ago. I never truly knew what it meant. Now i do. I've become close men fighting on the Step Stones only to see them die.
And i couldn't even try to help them even when i beg. I had to leave them. Forget about them quickly. It's the only way to survive.
It was now night. Not saying war stopped at night, but sometimes both parties needed rest and to collect men... Or see how many they had left.
I laid down on the hard ground thinking of the comforts of home. I thought about Rhaenyra. What she was doing right now, how she felt about me leaving. I also thought about my father. I wondered if he missed me.
Corlys told me that he has written many times, begging me to return. But i couldn't. I needed to prove myself.
"Here. Water" i heard a voice say which snapped me out of my daze. I looked up to see Daemon. I gave him a weak smile gulping it down. Even though i despised the man, i needed to make peace with him... For now anyways.
I didn't need to like him but he was on our side of the war. So i couldn't hate him. "You tired yet?" he asked. "No. Are you?" i questioned. "Not yet... Not saying that i wouldn't love a comfy bed with good food and decent wine but... We're alive."
I laughed under my breath breaking off a piece of stale bread to eat. "Caraxes seems to like it here" i said. "Yes. Well she gets to kill men without getting punished. Of course she's happy" he mumbled.
The light in his eyes made me think he was taking about himself and not his dragon. "Cannibal is too. But he's hungry" i said. "He'll be fed tomorrow. I'm sure of it. Corlys is getting more impatient by the minute" he said.
Even though we've been fighting for three years now, it still seems like we've gotten no where. No closer to winning yet.
"So... How are the nightmares?" he asked. I gulped at his question. "I don't know what you're talking about" i mumbled. "I've heard you. The mumbling in your sleep."
I shuffled uncomfortably. "I get them too. So do the rest of the men here. You never get used to war" he said which made me feel a little bit at ease.
"How do i stop it?... I want to stop it" i mumbled. "You can't. The nightmares stop when the war is finished. You want it to stop? You fight harder. You kill more. It's the only way" he said. I nodded.
"Try get some sleep, princess. I feel as if the war will end soon... But i can't tell who will win" Daemon said as he walked off. I took a deep breath in and out. The truth was, either one of us had a chance of winning... But i would not let myself go down with them.
It was now the next day. I got a few hours of sleep... Well, two to be exact. I was standing with the rest of the men as Corlys told us of his plans. Cannibal lingered close by, getting more and more antsy.
Smoke filled the air from a few days prior. Cannibal had gotten many arrows through his leg and was still injured. I had never been more afraid in my life. If i lost him, i would loose the thing i love the most.
"We have sixteen, perhaps eighteen, seaworthy ships and sixty knights. Our food quickly dwindles, save what we can fish from the sea. I would say we have a fortnight, perhaps a bit longer with strict rationing. I made call for Driftmark to send more ships.... But they will be weeks away. And the crown is of no help. They refused to send any men or ships our way" Corlys said glaring over towards me.
"We are faltering and the Triarchy knows it. The Crab king believes he has already won. We must press the attack" i said taking a step closer being sure to be heard.
"I believe you are right, princess. Continue sending the dragons" Corlys said. "It's pointless father. The Crabfeeders have created a chokehold here, beyond these dunes. Archers hold their high positions, foot soldiers hold the ground. We strike them on dragon back time and time again, but they just retreat within the caves" Corlyses son, Laenor, said.
"Dragons can circle Bloodstone until they fall out of the sky" Vaemond said staring at me. Vaemond Velaryon was the brother of Corlys. We have not seen eye to eye these past few years. For the main reason him being a cunt.
"My dragon will not fall out of the sky just because these men are to afraid to fight on the front line, Ser Vaemond. I hope you know that" i spat. He rolled his eyes and continued blabbering on. "The Crab feeder and his men have no reason to leave these caves."
Everyone paused. "Then we'll give them one. An offering of flesh to bait the crab. If we kill him, his army will retreat" i said. Vaemond once again rolled his eyes. "Please explain to me again why you thought it was a good idea to bring a woman to battle?" Vaemond whispered to his brother. But he did not whisper quietly enough.
I opened my mouth to speak but was interrupted by the sound of Caraxes flying over us. Daemon landed his dragon close by as he made his over to us. "And tell me princess, which man here will happily go to his death?" Vaemond questioned.
"Daemon" Laenor said. I gave him an annoyed look. "Daemon is why we are loosing!" Vaemond spat through gritted teeth. "Atleast Daemon is fighting in this war. What have you done uncle? Other than be the master of complaints?" Laenor questioned sarcastically. I chuckled under my breath as he spoke.
"Enough, Laenor!" Corlys exclaimed. "If Kingslanding will not support the Targaryens, why should any of us?" Vaemond shouted in frustration. "Would you for once shut your mouth, Ser Vaemond... I'll go!" i exclaimed.
Silence... No one dared speak a word. Everyone's eyes drifted from me and to Daemon as he stood beside me. "What have i missed?" Daemon asked with a small smirk.
"If you do not seize control of this war, my lord, the crabs will soon dine on all of us" Vaemond said now backing down from his aggressiveness as he came face to face with Daemon.
Daemon looked at the men surrounding us until his eyes fell on me. Suddenly, the silence was interrupted by the sound of armour clashing together. I turned my head to see members of the kings guard coming towards us.
"Prince Daemon, princess Rhaena, i've bring word from king Viserys Targaryen, first of his name, king of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men. Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and protecter of the realm" one of the knight said handing a scroll to Daemon.
Daemon read the scroll with a disgusted look on his face. I did not know what the scroll said, but it couldn't have been good. He handed the scroll back to the knight and hung his head for a moment.
That was until he gripped his helmet and began beating the messenger with it. I laughed loudly at the scene. He continued beating the man until some of the knights held him back.
He tried to keep fighting until he eventually eased up. "My brother has sent men to finish this war for us... It will be his victory... It will be like we were never here" Daemon mumbled. My smile faded. "What?" is all i could get out.
"Fuck" Daemon mumbled with a sigh. I thought about these past two years. I came into this war when i was seventeen. A child. I was not a child anymore. I was done with my father stealing things from me.
First my birthright and now my victory? I don't think so. Even if it meant my death, i would win this war. And everyone will know it was me who did it.
"The bastard who won the war at the Stepstones"
I ripped up the scroll and stormed off. I made my way down to Cannibal who stood along side Caraxes as i mounted him with no saddle. There was no time for that.
"What are you doing?" i heard a voice question. I froze as i realised it was Daemon. "I can't let him do this. I can't... I just can't" i mumbled. Daemon stayed quiet. Without saying a word, Daemon began mounting Caraxes.
"What are you doing?" i asked. "I'm coming with you. My brother didn't just steal your right to throne, remember that?"
I gulped down the lump in my throat and gave him a small nod. "Let's go then" i said. "Good luck... Don't die" Daemon said jokingly. I let out a weak laugh. "I mean it... Don't die" he said sounding more serious.
"No promises, your grace" i teased as i flew off. Daemon followed close behind as we made our way to the caves where the Crabfeeders were hiding. There was rotten bodies deep down in the sand as crabs feasted on them.
Daemon and i made our way through the empty battlefield waiting to see any Crabfeeders. "Do you have a plan?" i asked. "No... Do you?" he asked. "Not really."
Daemon ripped one of the loose ship sales and pretended to use it as a sign of "surrender". He held it up infront if the caves as Crabfeeders slowly came out, one by one.
"Kneel" he mumbled. "What?" i whispered through gritted teeth. "Just... Kneel. Trust me" he said. I sighed in annoyance as we both knelt down. Daemon held up his sword as a few Crabfeeders walked towards us.
One of them took Daemons sword as i felt more and more uneasy. I didn't know what he was planning... But i hope it was this. I grabbed a dagger that was strapped to my leg and stabbed the Crabfeeder in his side.
Daemon grunted in annoyance at my eagerness. He grabbed another sword he had hidden in his armour and stabbed another Crabfeeder in the chest. I began slicing any man who came towards me whilst also trying to dodge the arrows that came flying our way.
I looked up to see the Crab king standing on top of the caves, not moving an inch. It was like he still thought he could win. If we wanted to win this war, we had to kill him.
I ran towards him killing anyone who stood in my way. As i was running, Crabfeeders all huddled around me until there was no way out. "Shit" i mumbled under my breath.
Suddenly, the men were cut down one by one by Daemon. "Kill him. Get to the Crab king and we've won. I'll hold them off" he shouted. I gave him a thankful nod as i ran up to the caves.
I began climbing up the rocks as i felt an arrow fly through my shoulder. I bit my tongue knowing i had to keep going. One i was up upon the top of the caves, i ran towards the crab king.
I felt another arrow fly through my leg as i screamed in pain and frustration. It was then i heard another scream... Well, scream is the wrong word. I heard a furious roar fill the air as i looked up at they sky. I let out a relived laugh to see Cannibal flying above me.
It was as if he felt my pain and knew i needed help. "You!" i heard someone shout. I looked back down to see the Crabking storming towards me. "You die today!" he shouted.
I grunted in pain and limped towards the man. He grabbed his sword as i weakly blocked it with mine. He tried to swing it again, but i managed to hold his sword down with all my might.
He shouted in frustration as he kicked my wounded leg down. I fell down on one knee as he grabbed me by my hair. "You. Bastard. Die" he said through gritted teeth. It was obvious he had to work on his vocabulary. But there was another thing that was obvious. I could not beat him with just my sword.
I gulped down any fear i had and realised this was the only way. I weakly looked up at Cannibal who lingered above us, roaring with fear, not knowing what to do.
"Dracarys."
The Crabkings cocky smirk faltered. I knew Cannibal did not want to do it... But he had to. "Dracarys!" i shouted with more urgency. This time, i was loud enough for Daemon to hear me.
"Rhaena!" he shouted. I saw him cut down the man in front of him as he ran towards me. "Please, Cannibal! Dracarys!" i said this time pleading. The Crabking tried once again to strike me, but i also once again blocked him.
Daemon tried to climb up to the caves, but was dragged back down by the furious Crabfeeders. I the Driftmark army, alongside my fathers army make their way toward us. But they were too late. I saw in Cannibals eyes that he understood what he had to do.
"Dracarys" i said one last time with tears running down my cheek. With one roar, Cannibals flames flew down towards us. I shut my eyes tightly hoping not to feel any pain.
I heard the Crabking scream in pain which slowly faded into nothingness. I was readying myself for the pain. For everything to turn into nothing. To be done with all of this shit.
But... Nothing happened.
I felt no pain... I felt alive. I slowly opened my eyes to see the flames crashing down on me. It was almost... Beautiful. To be honest, i never really felt more alive.
The flames faded away as i felt everyone's eyes on me. I felt Cannibals stare, the few Crabfeeders left standing stare, Driftmark and the Kingsgaurd stare and i felt Daemons stare, who was now standing behind me.
I looked down and realised that the only thing on me that had burned was my armour. I wrapped my arms around myself, still in a daze from what had just happened. "Here" Daemon said covering me up with his cloak.
He helped me stand up as my knees were weak. "Did we... Did we?" i stuttered not able to speak. "Yes, yes... We did it" Daemon said looking me up and down, also still in shock.
"How?" is all i could get out. "I don't know. Your not hurt at all?" he questioned. I shook my head. Daemon held me closer to him, gripping me tightly. "No one will ever call you bastard again, that's for sure" he said. "What do you mean?" i asked.
"Your unburnt... That sounds like a pretty good title to me... The Unburnt."
