Part 49: A Much Needed Talk

Nora: So what are we going to do now?

Qrow: I'll make a stretcher.

Ren: I'll help you.

Jaune: Can you not walk Y/n?

I groaned and nodded my head. My wound was completely sealed which was bad. No poison can get out of my body thta way meaning I had to Vomit it out. Which... Is not going to be fun.

Jaune: I guess Qrow and Ren will make the stretcher then. Nora, want to make camp for the rest of us with me?

Nora: Sure.

Qrow: Ruby wanna help?

Ruby: Umm no. I'm just going to stay here with Y/n.

Qrow nodded as he remembered what had happened between them.

Qrow: Right, Cmon green.

They all went their separate ways leaving me and Ruby together. I looked away and turned slightly away from her. I don't know what's going to happen now.

Ruby: Umm, how are you feeling?

Y/n: ...Dizzy.

Ruby: Ahh... I see your wound has already healed... That's good

Y/n: It's not. The poison can't escape.

I said all of this in a deadpan tone which Ruby noticed. The wind rustled past each other and I kept looking away.

Ruby: Look... A-About last night I-

Y/n: (Hugged knees together) I don't wanna hear it. If your just going to say we should break up then just-

Then she lunged forward and embraced me.

Ruby: No!

I winced at her gesture and tone. She retreated a little as she loosened the grip of the hug.

Ruby: Y/n, I'm so sorry...

I was surprised I though this conversation would go In the other direction.

Ruby: I didn't know what I was saying -I-I didn't mean any of it... I was just so angry...

I pushed her away very softly. She recoiled at my action.

Ruby: L-Look... I get it if your mad just please give me another chance. I can fix this.

Y/n: ....I... I don't know.

I fully wanted to accept her apology but I... I just felt a certain type of way. Ruby started tearing up because of my response.

Ruby: That's... understandable...

I looked toward Ruby and held eye contact for a while before I turned away again.

Ruby: I... I thought about what you said.

I looked back in confusion. She had her hand on her left elbow.

Ruby: When you said that sometimes I was too controlling?

I finally understood what she meant now.

Ruby: Last night I was thinking about what you said and I realised... You were right. You have every right to be mad at me. I-I kept you in patch for so long... I wouldn't let you go out too far because of what I thought would happen to you... I... I shouldve let you have more freedom and go see your uncle. And... If you want to give me a second chance... Then... I promise I'll do better.

She then looked at me for a few seconds before Turing away from my silence. I tried to get up before grunting. Ruby came towards me to help me but I refused.

Y/n: I-I understand... I guess I could've done better at not getting myself into danger...

Ruby: I should've listened to you more as well.

She then went to a cheery tone.

Ruby: So, What's it going to be?

Y/n: Well... I...

Ruby: You don't have to answer now... (Please Please...)

Imma start doing thinking in brackets and the emotions I might change it up if it gets confusing.

Y/n: Well, [Smiles] of course Ill give you another chance.

Ruby: YES!

I winced at the volume of her voice.

Ruby: Oop. Sorry. [Hugs me] I'll make sure this never happenens again.

Y/n: [Hugs back] I love you...

Ruby: I love you too...

Y/n: Hehe... You're not going to believe what Qrow has to say next.

Ruby: Why's that?

I chuckled.

Y/n: Just wait and see.

I groaned and held my stomach as I vomited. Ruby patted my back to help.

Ruby: This is good to Let the poison come out. Here's a tissue.

Y/n: [Panting heavily] Y-Yep... These next days are going to be rough. I don't even know if I'll make it... Haven is far away.

Ruby: Don't say that.

Y/n: (Hmm...I wonder... If my... Thing got stung... And I told Ruby to suck the poison out....)

I spaced out and Ruby noticed.

Ruby: Why are you blushing?

Y/n: O-Oh! Nothing! Umm I think it's because of the vomiting.

Ruby: Right...

Y/n: What do we do now?

Ruby: I don't know. Hmm... Y/n?

I hummed.

Ruby: Where do you think we will be in a year from now?

Y/n: (I know this answer and she probably won't like it...) Umm... I-I think we're going to be saving the world.

She chuckled at my response.

Ruby: Yeah, right. I think... Hmm I Dont know. I think we're going to be back in Beacon in a few year. We might go to the last Year. With... Yang Weiss and Blake.

Y/n: I know we'll see them again.

Ruby: Sometimes I feel like a terrible leader. I mean look at us.

Y/n: That's not true.

Ruby: But we're all apart.

Y/n: You couldn't control the outcome of the fall of Beacon. Nobody could. That's what set us apart not your leadership.

Ruby: Right.

Qrow: Hey, you two made up now?

Ruby: Yes. (How does he know?)

Qrow: Good. Never let that happen again Ruby. Y/n, Get in the stretcher.

Ruby/Y/n: Okay.

I grunted as I went on the stretcher. It was hard but I made it. Ruby held onto one side and Qrow held onto the other.

Y/n: I feel like a baby.

Qrow: You are.

The rest laughed.

Y/n: Well! You...

Qrow: Not so witty when you got stung by poison huh?

Y/n: You litterally drink poison everyday.

Qrow: Pssh nah. It's good for me. [Jokingly] You should try some.

Y/n: [Jokingly] Maybe I should.

Ruby didn't catch my sarcasm.

Ruby: Umm no thank you. [Remembers conversation earlier] I-I mean sure! Wait... No. Ugh

We all laughed because we know what it was about.

Y/n: Don't worry Ruby. I will never drink.

Ruby: Good.

Ren: So, Qrow... How did you find us.

Y/n: He can turn into a bird.

RNJR: WHAT??

Qrow: Y/n!? Wait how do you know!?

Y/n: I sensed it.

Qrow: You what?

Y/n: There's no chance a birds aura level should be that high. [Grunts] Plus You were following us and the bird happened to be a Crow.

Qrow: You shouldn't just say stuff like that though.

Y/n: Why does it matter? Weren't you going to say it in like a few minutes from now?

Qrow: ...

Ruby: Uncle Qrow?

Qrow looked at her.

Ruby: What's going on? What's with all the secret and the-

Qrow: I was going to wait for later but I guess I'll share now. Let's start with the maidens.

---

Around a campfire, Ruby Rose, Qrow Branwen, Jaune Arc, Lie Ren, Nora Valkyrie and Y/n Brunswick sit on four logs positioned in a square. Qrow has just finished telling the story of the Maidens. Ruby was sitting next to me and letting me rest on her shoulder.

There is silence and Qrow takes a swig from his flask. He has a bandage wrapped around his abdomen over his clothing.

Qrow: Really? No questions?

Jaune: Of course we have questions. This is just... a lot to take in.

Qrow: (sighing) Sure, of course.

Ruby: So these... Maidens... They're powerful fighters that don't need Dust to use magic.

Y/n: Yeah. Crazy right?

Nora: And there are four of them?

Qrow: Yup. Always.

Ren: Which means that, whenever one of them dies, the power transfers to someone - a female - that they cared about?

Qrow: Whoever was in their thoughts last. Important distinction. Best option is someone we can trust. Regardless, their souls become combined, in a way.

Y/n: Sexist system! The feminists have done this!

They all stared at me but Jaune was focused on something else.

Y/n: Oop So-

Jaune: And that's what you were trying to do to Pyrrha... the night the tower fell. You and Y/n were trying to turn her into one of them.

Qrow: The previous Fall Maiden, Amber, had been attacked. She was young, inexperienced. And her assailant, who we now know is Cinder, somehow managed to steal some of her power, but not all of it. We were afraid that if we didn't do something, the rest would go to her as well.

Jaune: (looking angry) So you and Y/n forced it on Pyrrha.

Qrow: We didn't force anything. We explained the situation and gave her the choice, and she chose. You were there, you heard her.

Y/n: It was her decision.

Jaune hangs his head for a brief moment before getting up and walking several feet away from group. Qrow watches him go.

Ruby: That guy, Tyrian - why was he after me?

Qrow: (sighing) Well, you definitely painted a target on your back with what you did at Beacon. I told you having silver eyes is a rare trait. And the fact that you were able to use them seems to have upset some very powerful people. Not many people know about the silver eyes. Those that do aren't very happy that one has surfaced. That's why I've been keeping an eye on you in order to make sure you were safe. All of you.

Nora: But Y/n doesn't have silver eyes. So... Why is he being hunted.

Qrow: Y/n is from an extremely rare bloodline. The L/n' s. Essentially the opposite of a silver eyed warrior. He can use his abilities to gain insane reflexes and his Physical abilities rise. He can also spawn Grimm but hes only done that a few times.

Y/n: Yep. It's true. The perks are that my reflexes are quicker than most. I'm stronger and faster than the normal person and I don't need that much sleep That's why I take first watch. I can also sense some emotions as well. It's like I'm part Grimm... Well, I kind of am.

I could feel rising anger from where Jaune was. I knew he'd be angry.

Jaune: So... This whole time. You just lied to us!?

We all were confused.

Jaune: Did Pyrrha know about your abilities or whatever?

Y/n: No. Nobody knew. Jaune calm down.

Jaune: Don't tell me to calm down.

Y/n: Moving on.

Ruby: Well, Uncle Qrow then... why not just travel with us? It seems like that would've been way easier.

Jaune answers her loudly enough to be heard, but with his back still turned to everyone.

Jaune: He was using you as bait.

Y/n: I told you to c-

Qrow: Look, I wouldn't put it like that - it's complicated.

Jaune: (turning back to face him) What is all of this? Ruby's being hunted, the schools are being attacked, all for what?! What is the point of all of this?! Will you just tell us what's going on?!

Qrow stares at him, then slouches over with a sigh.

Qrow: Would you sit down? You're stressin' me out, 'kid.

Jaune sits back down on his log and crosses his arms. Qrow starts to take another swig, but changes his mind before the flask reaches his lips.

Qrow: Not many people are super religious these days.

Qrow caps and sets the flask down.

Qrow: This world's been around for a long time, long enough that people have created dozens of gods. But if you believe Ozpin, two of them are actually real.

Pan over to a nearby large rock, where Qrow's story is illustrated with a display of light and shadows from the campfire.

Qrow: They were two brothers. The older sibling, the God of Light, found joy in creating forces of life. Meanwhile, the younger brother, the God of Darkness, spent his time creating forces of destruction. As you can imagine, they both had pretty different ideas about how things should go. The older one would spend his days creating water, plants, wildlife. And at night, his brother would wake to see all the things that the elder had made and become disgusted. To counteract his brother's creations, the God of Darkness brought drought, fire, famine, all he could do to rid Remnant of life. Life always returned. So one night, the younger brother went and made something - something that shared his innate desire to destroy anything and everything.

Ruby: The creatures of Grimm.

Qrow: You guessed it. The older brother finally had enough. Knowing that their feud couldn't last like this forever, he proposed that they make one final creation... together, something that they could both be proud of, their masterpiece. The younger brother agreed. This last great creation would be given the power to both create and destroy. It would be given the gift of knowledge, so that it could learn about itself and the world around it. And most importantly, it would be given the power to choose, to have free will to take everything it had learned and decide which path to follow - the path of light or the path of darkness. And that is how Humanity came to be.

Ren: But... what does that have to do with us?

Qrow: Well, that's the kicker. See, the four gifts to mankind - knowledge, creation, destruction and choice - aren't just metaphorical. Each of them exists in a physical form, left behind by the Gods before they abandoned Remnant, and each of them is extraordinarily powerful. If someone were to collect all four, they'd be able to change the world. That's exactly what the enemy wants. The Huntsman Academies were created to train generations of Humanity's protectors, but they also serve another purpose - guarding the Relics. When Ozpin's predecessor founded the schools, he built them around the Relics to act as a fortress. Not only would they be easier to defend, but they would constantly be surrounded by trained warriors. The hope was that hiding them would keep mankind from using them against itself... and, of course, keeping them out of her reach.

Cut back to the group sitting around the campfire.

Qrow: So yeah, there's that.

Ruby: Her. You mean Salem?

Qrow: That's right. Not much is known about her. Quite frankly, that's not what matters. What matters right now is that she wants the Relics, and if she gets them, it's not going to end well.

Team RNJR still sits talking to Qrow at the campfire.

Jaune: Alright. So, let's say we believe all this. There really is this crazy evil being behind these attacks, not just some thugs trying to become powerful. Why doesn't the world know? Why isn't Atlas going after them? Or Mistral?

Nora: And why aren't we in more of a hurry to get to Haven? Shouldn't we be getting them a message? What if they're next?

Qrow: The Headmaster over there saw what happened to Beacon. He's not dumb. He'll be on his guard. Besides, it takes time to mobilize forces like that. Do you really think they planned out that attack on Beacon overnight? (pointing at Jaune) And to answer your question, it's the same reason we keep quiet about the Maidens. If the whole world knew about the Relics, about Salem, there would be chaos. There'd be another Great War on our hands, and this time, you'd have to fight. (pointing at Jaune again)

Jaune turns away.

Qrow: Look, I had the same questions, too. But ol' Ozpin would always put his foot down. "We can't cause a panic." Heh, can't tell you how many times I've heard that. Salem's smart. She works from the shadows, using others to get what she wants, so that when it comes time to place the blame, we can only point at each other. She's trying to divide us - Humanity, and so far she's done a pretty damn good job.

Leaning back, Qrow looks up at the broken moon and the visual pans to follow his gaze before returning to him, with an above shot at first, changing to a frontal shot when he looks ahead and sighs.

Ruby: Alright, so what should we do?

Everyone looks to Qrow.

Qrow: (chuckling) I don't really know.

The teens all look at each other, surprised and nervous. They return their gaze to him when he starts speaking again.

Qrow: Ozpin has put a lot of trust in the Headmasters. Like I said, the schools are an important part of stopping Salem. Atlas is going to be on high alert after the last attack, and Vacuo is - well, Vacuo. It'll be hard to hire thieves and scoundrels to fight against other thieves and scoundrels. Take that, add in the fact that Cinder and her crew claim to be from Haven, and I think it's likely the next target. So, we're on our way to the Headmaster. Haven't heard from him in a while, even before the attack. I'm hoping he has the answers.

Qrow stands, but grabs at where he was cut.

Qrow: (groaning) Alright, I think it's time you kids got some sleep.

Ruby: Uncle Qrow?

Qrow: Yeah?

Ruby: (standing) This is a lot to take in, and it all sounds crazy, but... I'm willing to do whatever I can to help because I trust you. But why couldn't you trust me? Why couldn't you just travel with us, instead of this secrecy, and, and--

Qrow: Look, this has nothing to do with trust. I-- It's a long story, okay?

Nora: Seriously? Now you're tired of telling us stories?

He stares at the fire in silence before speaking. As he talks he kneels down, picks up a stick and pokes at the fire.

Qrow: Did you know that crows are a sign of bad luck? Old superstition, but it's how I got my name. See, some people can absorb electricity and some people can burst into rose petals and some people are just born unlucky. My Semblance isn't like most - it's not exactly something I do. It's always there, whether I like it or not. I bring misfortune. (chuckles bitterly) I guess you could call me a bad luck charm. Comes in real handy when I'm fighting an enemy, but it makes it a little hard on friends... (looking over at Ruby) and family.

Getting up, he still holds his side.

Jaune: Well, you are just a real bundle of help, aren't you?

Ruby and Nora turn to glare at Jaune.

Qrow: Yeah.

He walks away from the campfire, slowly.

Ren: Where are you going?

Qrow: Taking a walk.

Ruby: There's nothing else you want to tell us?

A red-eyed raven lands on a tree branch with a quiet caw. Qrow looks at it, and it cocks its head, looking at him.

Qrow: Not tonight.

He continues his slow walk away, leaving the four teenagers to themselves for a bit. The log he had prodded earlier rolls out of the campfire. Ruby watches Qrow, concerned.

Y/n: Wow Jaune. When did you turn into such a bitch?

Ruby: Woah... Y/n.

Jaune: You don't even talk to me Y/n. Especially not after you lied to us and Pyrrha which lead her to her death.

Y/n: Jaune I

Jaune: Don't "Jaune" me. If you would've just trusted us then maybe shed be here... Instead of you. She wouldve been way more helpf-

Ruby: Jaune, knock it off.

Jaune: No seriously. Maybe Cayde dying was a taste of your own medicine!

We all Gasped. Jaune slightly retracted what he said. It may have been too far.

Y/n: You did not just say that...

A tear formed in my eye.

Ruby: Grr, Jaune what the hell?! You can't just say that! That's so Rude.

Jaune: I'm sorry for saying it but my point still stands. If you would've just told us from the beginning then.

My eyes were turning black and so we're my hands.

Ruby: U-Umm... Let's go Y/n.

She helped me go out of the place and she put me down around 20 meters away from the camp site.

Y/n: ...It was a good thing you pulled me away when you did.

Ruby: Y/n, Jaunes just... Angry.

Y/n: Really? Because that's way worse than what you said. I don't think people just get angry like that.

Ruby: I know. There's no excuse. Plus, I think Caydes alive as well. I know it.

I smiled.

Y/n: Thank you.

Ruby: So... You knew everything that Qrow said?

Y/n: Almost everything. There were a few things that I didn't know but yeah.

Ruby: Ahh... You know I'm always here if you need it say something right?

Y/n: Of course.

Ruby: I'm glad your back Y/n.

Y/n: Hehe. Your too nice sometimes.

Ruby: Huh? Cmon Y/n. You know that's not true. Remember yesterday?

Y/n: Oh yeah. Never mind.

Ruby: H-Hey I'm still nice!

Y/n: I know Ruby. I know. Never change.

She giggled.

Ruby: Wanna head back now that you've calmed down?

Y/n: Nah. I'll come back later.

Ruby: Okay. Don't run off anywhere.

---

It is morning time at the campsite, and the birds are a-tweeting. All five teenagers are in their sleeping bags, the campfire burned out in the middle. Qrow sits up against the base of a tree, facing the group. Ren sits up with a sigh.

Ren: We should probably get moving.

Ruby: Yeah.

Both turn at the sound of Y/n coughing, which grows louder and sounds worse with each cough. Nora and Ruby sit up, and Ruby quickly goes to her boyfriends side.

Purple staining is visible on The grass next to Y/n. Everyone was nervous.

Y/n: I'll [Coughing] be fine. This poisons really going in deep huh.... Why did he have to be a scorpion faunus... Why not a unicorn faunus...?

Longer chapter. What do you guys think of what I did with Jaune? Was it too far? I don't mind really it makes the book more entertaining.
