⤜∞⤛ Getting Personal
Later in the afternoon, Hasan walked along the large corridor. He fiddled with a book in his hand. Biophysics was not his strong point and he had few doubts, so he had fixed an appointment with Professor Mishra to guide him.
He heard muffled sounds from the staff room, and he stood rooted to the spot. Hasan strained his ear to listen to the commotion. Taking slow steps towards the staff room, he peeped from the door. There were few girls in the empty staff room. It was strange that there weren't any staff?
These girls were sticking gum on Mr. Mishra's chair. Hasan's mouth dropped open. Just then, one of the girls looked up and he swiftly pulled back. With his back tightly pressed against the wall, he debated if he should walk away or act casual? There was complete silence for a long time, and he thought they didn't notice him.
Hasan turned his head and gasped upon finding Anaisha standing next to him with her arms folded. She eyed him from top to bottom and a slow smile appeared on her face.
"Who are you?" She asked, arching one of her brows that hid under her front fringe.
"Um,"- He gulped, - "Ha—Ha—Has—Hasan."
"Interesting?"- Anaisha dropped her arms and shifted, - "And you didn't see anything, right." She patted his shoulder. Hasan lost his balance but steadied himself.
"What you are doing isn't right?" He could feel his heart thumping, the tremors of which were felt in his ear that turned red.
Anaisha chuckled and leaned, pinning him to the wall, - "And what are you going to do about it? Complain?" She smirked.
Hasan gulped hard, - He mustered some courage. He noticed the color change on Anaisha's face, the amused smile instantly dropped. She looked menacingly at him as she leaned back. The other girls encouraged her to leave and walk away but she kept glaring at him. Then, in a flash of a second Anaisha punched the wall next to Hasan's face. He yelped, squeezing his eyes tightly. She huffed.
"Listen,"- She pinched his cheek, - "Don't get personal with me. Next time, that wall will be your face." She warned. Hasan dropped his gaze to her bloody knuckles, and she forced him to look up into her eyes. Her upturned brown eyes were filled with rage and that made a shiver run down Hasan. He could feel his knees wobble a little and his cheeks hurt badly. Anaisha threw one more glare at him and turned. She pulled up the sleeves of her top and haughtily walked away. The other girls silently followed her.
Hasan exhaled loudly, adjusting the top buttons, - "What a wild woman?" He wiped the sweat off his brow and forehead.
Shivansh was super- entertained with what Hasan narrated. He couldn't believe he had such a close encounter with Anaisha. James was envious though. Hasan wasn't impressed.
"That girl is vile. She attacked the wall. Girls don't do such things." He said while jotting down points from the textbook.
Shivansh folded his legs and shifted on James's bed. Accounts book laid open and unattended on his lap. James leaned against his table, more interested in imagining everything Hasan had narrated.
For a moment, Anaisha's fury-filled eyes flashed in Hasan's mind. She reacted so aggressively. Why did she? Hasan looked up from the heavy textbook and stared at the cream-white cupboard in front whilst twirling the pencil in his hand. In his head, he debated if he should apologize to her for getting personal? He didn't want to keep any acquaintance with her though. Then, the thought of her bloodied hand made him feel responsible for hurting her.
Shivansh jumped from his bed declaring that he was hungry. Hasan shook his head, lowering his gaze. He chewed on the corner of his mouth as James and Shivansh prepared to go to the Mess.
"Dude!"- James leaned over Hasan, - "Don't dream about her."
"Yeah!" Shivansh teased him, - "You are cursing her with your lips but inside your heart you are fantasizing about her." He poked at his waist. Hasan wiggled away from the attacks of his friends, constantly refuting their rubbish mocks.
"And what—will you do? Complain to your father?"
"Hey, Choti!"- Abhinav's voice brought Anaisha out from her reverie. The plate filled with Paneer and Paratha came back to view. She blinked, licked her lips, and looked up.
"Ye—Yes." She spoke in a croaking voice. She cleared her throat, flipping back her hair.
Abhinav frowned, - "Hey, why is this bandaged?"-He grabbed her hand from across the table. Anaisha stammered for excuses as he observed her bandaged knuckles. Mr. Singhaniya, their father, looked alarmed. He extended his hand to hold his daughter's hand but Anaisha pulled away.
"Stop treating me like a baby. I was playing basketball and I hurt my hand." She lied. Family dinner was always a pain for her. At times, she wished she could just be served at room.
Abhinav exhaled deeply.
"Okay! Anyway, be ready tomorrow evening."
"Why?" She replied un-enthusiastically as she tore a piece of roti.
Abhinav and Mr. Singhaniya passed a smile. He shifted, keeping his gaze fixed on Anaisha.
"Tomorrow, we are going to meet a prospective bride for your brother." He declared. Anaisha chocked on her food. Then, she glanced at her brother and chuckled.
"Wow!"
"Aryaman!" Dadisa's stern voice got everyone's attention and Anaisha's smiled faded. Mr. Singhaniya gulped and stammered a yes.
Dadisa straightened in her seat, - "There is no need to take her with us." – Anaisha looked away, but she knew her grandmother was looking at her.
Dadisa cleared her throat, - "They will have wrong impression of us." She added.
Abhinav looked aghast. His gaze darted from his grandmother to his father and then at Anaisha. Looking at her disappointed face made his heart sink.
"No, Dadisa. I won't go if Choti isn't coming." He said determinedly. Dadisa's expressions softened. She placed her palm over her grandson's hand.
"Beta why are you comparing yourself with her. You are my grandson, my blood and—"
Anaisha roughly pushed her plate away from her. It hit the ceramic bowl, alerting everyone. Abhinav called out to his sister but Anaisha had already got up and stormed out of the room. On her way she heard her Dadisa say,
- "No need to take Babita with us either. I know, she is Abhinav's mother, Aryaman. But what use is a woman who can't control her husband. What good decision will she take...no, arguments, Aryaman."
Anaisha walked into her room, slamming the door shut behind her. She jumped on the bed, resting on her stomach and grabbed her phone from the bedside table.
"Hello, Rocky. Do you have more packets?... I am coming, give me all you got and some booze too."
