Chapter 19
I wanted to speak, but I couldn't, I was too busy reliving everything that had just happened while he stood in front of me with a gigantic grin. I probably had one on my face as well.
Instead of speaking, we just leaned in again.
----
Evan couldn't even begin to describe what it felt like, only that it got better once they pulled away and did it again. And again. And again.
Until he felt the vibration of his phone in his jacket pocket.
Regretfully, they pulled away from each other, sitting in comfortable silence as Evan took out his phone. His alarm had went off, it was time to go back in.
He ran a hand through his hair as he kept his eyes on the screen. Looking up, he locked it and put it away.
"We better go." He said, smiling at the boy in front of him.
-
The slid back into class, the other students slowly filing in behind him, no one asked where they were or why they were together.
Because detention is a sacred place like that. Don't question anyone else, they won't question you.
"You can go." The teacher said, not looking up from her phone as she yawned to herself once more. The kids nodded, standing up.
As Evan left, he slipped a piece of paper onto Jonathan's desk. The paper had his number.
Jonathan stared at the paper in delight for a few heartbeats before gripping it in his hand and walking out of the class with a smile.
On his way home, he made Evan a contact.
Jonathan: hey Evan :)
Evan: hey Jon
Evan smiled at the text as he walked inside his house. "Mom! Dad! I'm home!" He called, getting no answer. He glanced out the living room window, no cars. Must be at work.
Tyler: ev u out yet
Evan: yeah but I'm super tired and I have hw
Tyler: alright get some rest bud, we'll hang later
Evan didn't reply after that, instead going back to texting Jonathan as he reached his room, dropping his bag onto the floor and turning on the light.
He didn't really have homework, he just would rather stay home than hang out with his friends.
They didn't talk about what happened during detention, although each one silently wished that they would, but they didn't.
Evan couldn't remember the last time he felt this happy.
--
The next day at school the two acted normally, avoiding each other save for a few glances and smiles.
At lunch, Evan risked a text.
Evan: how's ur day
"Why do you look so happy?" Tyler smirked at Evan, who looked way happier than he did before. "Did you hook up with the detention teacher or something?"
Evan's face dropped, twisting in disgust as he fake puked. "Oh god no, she was super old. Why can't I just be happy, Tyler? Do you not want me to be happy?" He asked, looking at him accusingly. He glanced at Jonathan's table, catching him on his phone.
He discreetly checked his own.
Jonathan: good, how's yours?
"You're texting somebody, aren't you?" Brock asked, trying to get a glimpse of what was on his friend's screen.
"Screw off." Evan snapped, shoving his phone in his pocket after he answered.
Evan: it would be better if my friends weren't so damn annoying
"Oh, touchy." Tyler teased, continuing to eat his food.
--
Two weeks later, the boys planned to get detention once more. This time, during first period.
"Detention." The teacher had snarled while the two held in their laughter. Tyler had glared at Evan while Lui glared at Jonathan.
"Again? Really, Ev? What the hell?" Tyler hissed as Evan slid back in his chair, rolling his eyes.
"Whatever." He spoke coldly, not looking at Tyler.
-
Evan pressed Jonathan against the statehouse wall on the roof, their lips connected.
Jonathan wrapped his arms around Evan, one rested on his lower back and the other against his head. Meanwhile, Evan rested a hand on Jonathan's hip and the other on the back of his neck.
They pulled away, panting, foreheads rested against each other's. Neither of them spoke, just caught their breath for a few seconds before kissing again, this time slower and softer.
They pulled away just as slow, both opening their eyes at the same time, still holding onto each other.
"This is nice." Jonathan breathed, smiling at Evan, who smiled right back at him, nodding.
"It really is." They flipped so Evan was pressed against the wall, Jonathan's arms wrapped around his torso as he buried himself in his chest. Evan petted his hair, kissing the top of his head.
--
"Why the fuck did you get detention again, Ev?" Tyler sat next to the teen, a tray of food in front of him while Evan clutched his phone in front of him.
"Again? Dude, what's up with you?" David asked, also sitting down with his food, everyone else followed
Evan shrugged, completely engrossed in his phone as he smiled at a text he received from Jonathan. He excitedly typed out a reply, hitting send before putting it away and paying attention to his friends.
"I don't even wanna know." Tyler declared, deciding to begin eating his food.
"Nothing is wrong with me, I'm just in a good mood! And if teachers just happen to try to ruin it, well, shit happens."
"Whatever you say." Brock said, launching into their daily conversation.
Despite trying to act normally, Evan just couldn't stop thinking about how perfect Jonathan was.
--
"Hey Ev." Tyler slid up to Evan's locker after school, greeting him with a smile.
"Hey Ty. Come here to ridicule me again, have you?" He closed his locker, turning around and beginning to walk in the direction of detention. "Because I'm not having it today."
"I got detention, too." Tyler replied coolly, walking in step with his friend.
Evan nearly stopped in track, he could've swore his heart skipped a beat, and suddenly he felt a flash of coldness. "Did you now?" He forced out as he stiffly continued to walk.
Tyler nudged him on the shoulder, chuckling. "Yeah, of course I did. Wouldn't want you to be alone, would I?"
Evan's nervous laughter successfully hid all his terrible thoughts.
