KENDALL
--------------------------------
"We need to leave," I told Rose wrapping my fingers around her forearm. "Like now." I pushed.
She looked like a total train wreck, okay, that's a bit brutal. A hot mess.
"No, but- Ken-" She didn't get to finish her sentence before passing out.
How many times did I need to drag/carry Rose down or up a flight of stairs?
I crouched down on my knees shaking her arms softly, in hopes she'd wake up.
It was not going to be fun if David found us and I'd have to play dead as well.
"Rose."
At this point the adrenaline was really getting to me, not only because Rose had passed out but because everyone had already left the party.
The only ones left being David, Mac, Alex (wherever he was), Rose and I.
"Come on Rose." I cried.
Inhaling deeply, I pull her up off of the ground. I wasn't strong enough to carry her so instead, I wrapped my arms around her as she leaned against my body.
One step. Two steps.
Mentally I cried out in frustration, this was not good, not one bit.
David could catch us. David's going to catch us. It's impossible to make it to the door without passing the living room.
"Did you hear that?" I caught Mac murmur from downstairs as I stiffened. No, no, no. This could not be happening.
"No," there was silence. "Whatever, I don't have time for this, dad's going to be home any minute, we've got to clean." David argued back.
"What if someone's passed out?" Mac protested, he was such a caring, considerate person but at times like these I really wished he wasn't.
"I don't know-"
"I'm going to check it out." Mac finished, the sound of something hitting the floor rang throughout the house as David let out a agitated sigh.
Adrenaline was pulsing through me, I was thankful it wasn't David coming up, but on that note Mac didn't need to see us either.
"Rose please wake up, please wake up." I begun slapping her cheeks lightly but hell did I just want to slap her across the face for doing this to me.
The patting of Mac's footsteps against the tiles weren't any help, they slowly but surely became louder and louder until-
"Kendall?" I peered up at him, his hand on the railing, one step on the set of stairs in front of me.
I shook my head, pleading for him to stay quiet as I shifted Rose's weight to my right arm, using my free arm I bring my finger up to my lips.
Rose almost collapsed, for the better or the worse. Because Mac and I had both reached out to catch her resulting to his hand over mine.
Honestly, I would have melted on the spot... If we weren't catching a passed out Rose.
"I've got it." He whispered to me as I nodded. He lifted her off of the ground gently, placing his arms under the back of her knees and back.
"Is there anyone there Mac?" David shot out from the living room, the sound of his feet padding against the tiles scared the living day lights out of me, as Mac and I turned, looking at each other.
"Not sure yet, still looking!" He assured David.
"Hurry up. I can't have this place looking like this, or worse any hobo in my house."
Mac rolled his eyes in response. David could be so dramatic at times, I for one knew that better then anyone.
"We can't go down." Mac spoke more to himself then me.
My breathing became more strained by the minute, my breathing pattern becoming rapidly faster.
I didn't do well under pressure and maybe that explains why I failed everyone Naplan back in Australia. (Fellow aussie's will get it, but pretty much NAPLAN is like exams but instead, it's not for seniors.)
"Hey, don't worry." Mac reassured me, I wish I could have taken his word for it but I just didn't know if I could.
"Come on, let's go." He huffed, repositioning Rose because she begun slipping.
He took two steps at a time up the rest of the flight of stairs. I rushed up after him.
David's house was like a maze, so in a sense it was easy to hide but at the same time easy to get lost.
Mac pushed down the handle of a door down with his elbow, pushing it open with the side of his arm.
I entered in after him, quickly shutting the door behind me.
Rose was placed onto the vacant bed; before Mac begun to stretch his arms after putting her down.
"I'll be right back." Mac spoke softly as he began walking towards the door.
Once the door was opened the silent room was pierced with the sound of someone's voice.
"David, what is this mess?"
I stiffened at the sound of the oh-so-familiar voice.
Mac continued to walk out the door, before he walked out and closed the door he peered back at me with a smile, probably trying to lighten the mood, but something told me, just going out of a limb here, that we were in deep crap.
Maybe it was nothing, and I was reading into it too much; like any other seventeen year old would.
Exhausted, I take a seat on the bed besides Rose's sleeping body. I make myself comfortable; even lifting my legs up and crossing them on the bed.
Only then I could properly take in my surroundings.
The bed and dressing were black or various shades of grey. There was a large framed poster of Sticky Fingers. Something about this room was off to me, something that was familiar, I couldn't quite pinpoint it.
"Dad, you know how responsible Mac is." David argued from downstairs.
"I wouldn't throw a party with him here, like he would ever let me." He continued.
Mac on the other hand wasn't heard saying even a word, nor his dad.
It was silent for a minute or two longer until footsteps were heard.
Stay calm Kendall. Stay calm.
The footsteps were becoming louder by the second, this was not happening all over again.
The door swung open. Revealing, well:
"Don't forget the name, cause you're so-" Alex begun tapping his phone as he bopped his head to the beat of the song, singing the lyrics.
His eyes are closed, he's too lost in the melody of the song that he doesn't even notice Rose and I are here. He closes his door, flicking off the lights. Then, without warning flops back into the bed. His head lands in my lap, and I'm almost certain he thinks its his pillow because he turns to his side, snuggling his face in my lap.
Crap.
I should've said something as soon as he set foot in this room, but it all happened in an instant I had no idea what to do... and now its come to this.
I can see him turn off his phone but his earplugs are still in and the song is still playing. I'm scared half to death because his arm is draping down from the bed and what I can assume, touching the floor. Something is going to drag him under, I can guarantee.
I'm urged to pull his arm back but I know I can't. Why am I still sitting here? I mean, it was sort of a tad bit late to say something now. I needed to think fast.
Alex brings his arm up from the bed. You know how they say 'be careful what you wish for?', well, suddenly that phrase has come into terms with me. His arm is now above his head and in my lap. My breathing becomes heaving, but only in my head. I'm trying to hold in my breath and silently breath through my nose but its a struggle.
I really wish Mac would just return. But considering the situation I currently find myself in maybe that wasn't the best thing at the moment.
Alex turns again and I think, maybe he's finally noticed something's up. Like he's laying in someone's lap and not a pillow and there's a passed out girl next to him that's certainly not a pillow either.
He reaches over the side of his bed, getting what I can assume to be his phone. He taps the screen a few times before a flash light comes on and is pointed at me.
"Fu-" He starts jumping back in his bed. He's on the ledge and less then a centimeter from falling off.
I sit there awkwardly, his torchlight is still shining in my face and I'm still at a loss for words.
"Hey..." I awkwardly say, smiling.
His hand is at his chest and he's inhaling deeply then exhaling. If it were me and I had found out I was laying in someones lap I would have thrown a punch at the person. Although it probably wouldn't have caused much of an impact.
"Kendall, what are you doing in here?" He gets up, walking towards the door before the -his- room lights up in a orange light.
He turns back to me and he jumps back and hits his door when he see's Rose laying on the bed, slobber dripping from the ends of her mouth. She's too deep in slumber to know whats even going on.
"What is going on." His tone of voice doesn't sound angry but nor was it a question.
"Alex?"
Alex and I hold eye contact when we hear Mr. Legends call Alex out. His eyes grow wide but his face remains straight, all shock drained.
His head whips around, its as if he's looking or thinking. He ushers me to come over as he opens his sliding glass closet doors.
He tugs even harder at the door, trying to get it to budge open. Clothes or something is jammed under the sliding door, that's why it won't roll. We're out of luck.
The door handle turns downwards, My eyes are settled on it before Alex shifts me to against the wardrobe. He makes the space between us closer and I'm taken by surprise I find myself holding my breath again. My hands are up in front of me to ensure he doesn't try anything.
The door opens and Alex has gotten himself into 'position' His arm is up against the door, only from his elbows up to his hands. His face is close and if I weren't the one in this position I would have mistaken it for someone making out.
I close my eyes because I'm scared, I'm scared to find out what will happen, I'm scared to see Mr. Legends after all that's happened, I'm scared as to what he'll think of me-
"Oh God, um- sorry-" I can finally open my eyes because I know the voice, it's Mac. He's frazzled and obviously doesn't expect to walk in on us... Doing nothing really.
I sigh from relief, Alex grunts from irritation. Mac decides its safe to turn and look. I'm more than uncomfortable because Alex's is still too close for my liking.
Pushing away, Mac looks at me with an unreadable expression. It may just be the hormones and false hope but I detect jealousy from the way he frowns his eyebrows and later doesn't take his glaring eyes away from Alex.
"Time to make a run." Mac states, in a cold manner. He stares down at Alex, Mac's taller. But Alex is less then intimidated, he's neutral in fact.
I take a step towards Mac because its awkward to watch them just stare at each other so intensely.
Mac doesn't move so I gently pull him on by the arm.
"Don't repeat the past. Got it?" Mac tells Alex, bending over and saying into Alex's ear. Alex laughs and shrugs his shoulder, still not intimidated at the slightest. If he was then he does a hell of a good job masking it.
"Crystal clear." He winks, laughing. Alex emphasises when he says 'Crystal'.
Mac glares down at him and I can tell that Alex is pushing his buttons because Mac takes a threatening step forward, getting into his personal space.
"Stay the hell out of it." Mac warns him.
I don't know whats going on but from what I've gathered its over some girl. Again, I found myself too lost in the moment to even do anything.
I know, it sounds stupid and impossible. You say if a situation like this came around you'd do something, you'd stop it. But you're so taken aback that in all honesty you don't think of anything to do. It's like you're a watching corpse.
"I would if she wouldn't stop blowing up my phone."
It wasn't the time for laughing but I had to admit it was funny. But, keeping in mind it wasn't to Mac I didn't let my laugh slide out.
Mac collects himself and straightens out his shirt. He whispers what I can't hear in Alex's ear. Alex can't help but laugh and stare back up at me and I know its about me.
Learning from past experience, and high school from when girls that can't help but gossip, you know when someone's talking about you.
Mac forwards to the bed and sweeps Rose up with one arm. I stand there still utterly confused, but Mac gently places his free hand on my lower back guiding me out of the door before I can even comprehend the situation.
---
"Mac, what-"
Mac tries to put on his best smile and reassures me nothing is wrong. I know I shouldn't but I'm not letting the conversation drop so easily.
"It's nothing to worry about Bambi." He jokes. Then he starts going on about how he calls me Bambi because of my clumsy manner and on first accouter with me I dropped a McFlurry on him.
"Who's Crystal?" I cut him off, barely listening. God has blessed me with the perfect timing because we've reached a stop light.
Mac taps the wheel and inhales deeply before starting because he's defeated. He needs to talk, he is going to talk.
