KENDALL
---------------------------------
A year had passed since I had moved to Haven High, to say at the least the school year was a breeze. I had preferred to stay out of trouble rather than get into it, because honestly it was finally my senior year- I only had 365 days left with my fellow peers and it was better off just to stay out of gossip all together.
And that leaves me here, in my black uniform with embroidered red bold letters on it, the letters spelling out McDonalds. It was only my first week here, and if you didn't pick up on the 'goody-two-shoes' attitude from me already, then it may come a shock to you that I planned to do nothing but play by the rule book. Yes, my boss Andrew actually created a staff rule book, with the count of 101 rules inside.
"Honestly, Andrew has way too much free time on his hands," mumbled Rose as she sat on the marble counter top holding the rule book in her petite hands. I quickly peered over her shoulder, she was up to page 10.
You're probably wondering who in their right mind would even bother to read that rule book... Well, you see it was actually compulsory to read it. If I were to be completely honest with you; the book was like the boss's pride and joy, he might have loved that book even more than his buisness. Throughout the day he would come in to check up on everything, and you would think he'd greet his staff, oh no, you have it all wrong he would be throwing trivia question at us such as;
"Rule number seven!" or another example would be him begining a sentence from the rule book and mid-way through his sentence he would stop and you would have to finish it. Yeah, this place had a weird way of functioning, believe me I know.
Rose groaned, slamming the book shut as she turned to me. "I can't do this." Her mouth gaped, eyes looking sheepish and expressionless. I could tell that she was practically dying from boredom, I smiled nodding in understandment. Rose and I had only met this week, we attended the same high school suprisingly enough. But in all honesty she was the closet friend I had made since moving here to Manhattan from Australia. Quite a big move, from all the way across the world actually, but what could I say? My family tended to move alot, if not house to house it was country to country.
"Hey, at least today you're working at the front register right?" I tried lightning her mood as her lips slightly tugged back into a small smile. Rose hated preparing the food, she hated it with a passion, or so she would always tell me. "Yeah." she sighed as her phone rang, "I'm just going to quickly take this, take care of my shift?" before I could even protest, Rose was no longer standing next to me, she was aready making her way to the front door.
I was the only one patrolling the registers at the moment, so I had my work cut out for me. I leaned over the counter top utterly bored out of my mind, there was literally no one in here at the moment. Customers would usually come running in at the stroke of twelve O'clock. It was nearing twelve now, the time being 11:50. Rose couldn't take that long to make a single call, could she? I sighed aloud. I played with my fingers waiting for the first customer of my shift (or should I say Rose's shift), to come in.
I swallowed down hard as the glass doors where Rose had exit moments earlier were pulled open. I scanned the customer quickly preparing myself for their order. (Weirdly enough it was a big deal for me), the person wore black nike shoes with basketball shorts and a basketball jersey thrown over the top. I slowly read the white words plastered on their jersey. Haven High Lions. Thats when it clicked for me, the customer went to the same school as me. They held a Spadling basketball in the crook of their arm. A Nike hat covered their face, I couldn't quite figure out who it was but whoever it was they made me want to pretend like I wasn't here.
The customer pulled off their cap as they neared the front register they peered up at the menu above my head, plastered on several television screens. I almost had a heart attack then and there, it was... Mac Flurry, the star player on the Haven High Lions basketball team, and he conveniently enough he had all the girls at school bowing to his freaking feet.
I pulled down my work hat to hide my face and sure enough, it was covered. Rose owed me big time. Mac stopped in his tracks in front of the counter, he looked down from the menu as it was now my cue to greet him. 'SOMEONE SAVE ME!' was the only thing running through my head. I inhaled deeply and spoke in a quiet tone of voice.
"Hi, how may I help you today... sir?" I mumbled under my breath. My cap blocked my line of vision in front of me, and thank God for that, or I'd be even more of a bigger nervous whreck then I already was... if that was even possible!
I wanted to run out of McDonalds no matter how stupid I looked. All I wanted to do was run out of the fast-food place, I wanted to run for my life!
"One McFlurry please." Ironic, Mac Flurry orders a McFlurry, why am I not suprised. He forgot to choose his toppings, dear lord don't make me repeat his order, don't you think I've said enough already? The world officially hates my guts.
"Toppings sir?" I breathed out in a mumble, hoping he had caught what I said.
"Sorry what was that?" why didn't I have a translater on my phone to speak for me when I couldn't talk at times like these?
I inhaled deeply before speaking up. "Any toppings on that sir?" I did it.
"Oh, Oreo's please." He answered as there was a moment of silence, and to make matters worst I couldn't even see a thing past my cap.
He chuckled. "Did you want the money?" I averted my head up so high that you could see up my nostrils, good one. I found the five dollar slip he was holding in front of me as I took it from his hands I put it into the cash register.
"Thanks," I caught him smile back, I hadn't noticed I was still in the 'look-up-my-nose' position until I noticed I could see ahead of me. "Kendall." he knew my name?
"Nice name tag." he spoke before walking to his stall. Way to burst my bubble.
Rose walked into the store looking as if she was lost, having fun in her own little world. As she came around the corner walking into the staff only zone she tied her apron back on, knoting it with a mini-bow behind her back. She sighed, resting her head on the palm of her hand as her elbow was prompted up on the table.
Snapping her out of her daze I asked her "Whats up with you?" she turned to me with a grin plastered on her face so large it was even larger then the Chesire cats grin. My, that look only mean one thing (I'm in for a long story).
"Christian." She giggled as I waited for her to continue. Christain was Rose's boyfriend, they had been dating since the seventh grade. From what she's told me they're quite serious. But I'm glad for her, I actually 'ship' their relationship, it was cute.
She rambled on as I was whipping up the Jock's order of a Oreo McFlurry. I was making it to precision, it had to be perfect. I was a bit of a perfectionist.
Rose finished talking and finally noticed I had been making a McFlurry while she had been speaking.
"Who's the McFlurry for?" She questioned raising an eyebrow as I laughed lightly at her question.
"Oh I wonder." I answered, all while Rose embraced me in a great big hug.
"It's for me isn't it? You're such a sweet heart!"
I pointed off at Mac sitting on a stall waiting for his order patiently. Although his back was facing us, it was enough to know that it was him, because written on the back of his Jersey was the number '0' and his last name was plastered on the sky blue jersey in bold white letters. 'Flurry', If that wasn't enough to know it was him, I don't know what is.
"Its actually for the customer. But whatever floats your boat." I shrugged, placing the ice-cream on a plastic tray. She parted her lips into an 'O'.
"I took his order, now you serve." I spoke pushing the tray to her as she shook her head stepping back, "Oh no, I insist you do it." She grined at me as I scoffed, no way was I doing it.
"Kendall just serve it." Tony shot out from the back as I jumped up out of fright forgetting he was here as well. Rose nodded along to Tony's words.
"Listen to your elders young one." Rose added referring to Tony as the 'elder' and me being the 'young one'. Rose and I are both the same age, seventeen.
"God, I'm flattered Rose. I'm only twenty-one, and an elder," he sneered. I snickered at his remark.
I groaned mentally face palming myself in the face, with shaky hands I picked up the tray, the ice-cream slightly wobbled on such uneasy grounds, every step after another I moved foward on wobbly knee's. As I reached his table he looked up our eyes meeting, his sea blue eyes. I gasped when I realised I wasn't wearing my cap.
"Is something wrong?" he asked. I swallowed quickly shaking my head. He hasn't reached out for his tray yet and he's staring at me dead straight in my face, making me more than uncomfortable.
"Huh, you're coach Summer's little sister right? Kendall Summers?" He smiled politely.
"Yeah..." Coach summers was my older brother Reace, he trained the boys basketball team back at Haven high, he started coaching since we moved here, which has been just over a year now. He was the replacement for there old coach, Coach Blackwood. It was only meant to be for a temporary amount of time, but Coach Blackwood moved into a retirement home. Reace enjoyed coaching the boys and the boys never complained about the switch, according to Reace anyways, so he was happy to take the job.
"I didn't know you worked here." He stated more than he asked. Well in my defense, I didn't even know you acknowledged my very existence. I casted a small smile.
"Thanks." I passed him his tray.
As I thought he had taken the ice-cream I pulled back, slipping on my butt when I stepped back, I closed my eyes before openning them, the agony! I looked over to him thinking he'd be the one laughing from the embrassing show I just put on in front of him, my life was over.
Thats when I noticed...
The McFlurry was spilt all over him, oh my gosh. I gasped covering my mouth as I heard Rose at the counter burst into historical laughter. Well, she looked like she was having fun. Now my life was officially over. Someone kill me now and save me from the embarrassment after.
"I am so sorry!" I shot up from my spot, if this wasn't enough to get me fired...
He shook his head raising his hand waving it off. "Nah, don't worry about it. Besides, it's just ice-cream. No big deal." I insisted to get him tissues but he shook it off walking to the rest room.
I ran over to Rose who was almost dying from her laughter, tears escaped her green eyes, her face went the colour of Santa Claus' cheeks, just great, she was such an encourgement. I rolled my eyes at her as I jumped up to sit on the counter. Keep calm and collected Kendall, it wasn't even that big of a deal, all that happened was the star basketball player, crowned Captain Ball made an effort to talk to you, not only did you blow it but you gave him a full view up your nose, fell on your butt and spilt ice-cream on him! I mean no big deal... Oh God who was I kidding!
I couldn't wait to move to another country and leave this all behind. 7
Rose got up from the ground as she pulled out a tissue to wipe away her tears from laughing so hard, she hobbled over to me, as she coughed she rested a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"It's okay," she begun as she brought me into a comforting hug, I waited for her pep talk to lighten my mood but it never came instead... she said "Don't worry, it's going to be okay beacuse..." I nodded slowly. "I've got footage." I gasped as she pulled out her phone playing the video she took.
"Oh. My. Heavenly. God!" I screamed, probably scaring off some customers making their way inside McDonalds (also known as; the house of embarrassment).
"Delete it, Rose Annabelle Winters!" I only ever used her whole name when I was completely, and utterly serious.
Rose muffled out my screams by gently pushing my head into her shoulder as she whispered in my ear. "Shhh, it's okay." I could hear in her voice she had to keep herself from laughing.
Well I guess this is why we're best friends.
