The fairy lights decorated around the mansion giving a spectacular view and the colourful decoration flowers created a lovely essence capturing the attention of many. The garden and halls buzzed with people and waiters as they served starters. The yellow and green theme gave a magnificent touch to the whole mansion as well as the people.Women wearing garlands made of fresh jasmine and marigold flowers. Some even wearing rose garlands. The fresh fragrance of roses wafting past the air.
Ahya moved aside, making me lean forward to have a look in the wall length mirror.Standing up from the stool to have a better look, I stared at the girl before me.Her light brown hair were in a casual bun.The light blush against her high cheekbones and the pink lipstick have her features a more prominent look. Her light brown eyes shining like all the stars of the night had been absorbed in them. Her figure clad in a golden blouse with contrasting orange and pale green with thread embroidery of yellow, blue, pink and green. The golden lehenga brushing against her feet. The embroidery of pink and orange with contrasting yellow flowers gave a beautiful look and the small stones encrusted in the flowers made the lehenga look even more beautiful. Her net dupatta that was on her shoulder had the same embroidery as the blouse as it ran along the four corners. Her feet clad in golden pumps. The girl nowhere looked like the usual Shahwar.
I turned my head around to look at Ahya only to see her smile brightly at me.I hugged the beautiful woman who had done a great job at my makeup.
"Thank you." I whispered.
"Your Welcome sweety. And you look beautiful."she said.
Ahya was wearing a yellow and orange Skirt that had embroidery with royal blue thread contrasted with golden colour and her blouse was simple yellow with blue print. Her dangling flower earring made her look more beautiful. The light green of her eyes stood out more against the liner and mascara and the blush made her face look more bright.
"You too."I said back just in time for my bedroom door to open as Mama walked in.Her figure clad in a lemon yellow Shalwar Kameez with contrasting orange gold. Her hands filled with bangles and jasmine garlands.Light makeup made her look more elegant.Walking towards me, she cupped my cheeks as her eyes filled with unshed tears.Lightly brushing her lips against my forehead she said,
"You look more than beautiful zamaad jaan."
Tears filled my eyes as I hugged her.The usual fragrance of her dupatta wafting past my nostrils. We parted and she took the yellow bangles encrusting them in my hands.Ahya came by our side and fixed my flower head piece.
After all the bangles were filled in my arms Mama said,
"Ahya Beta, bring her down in sometime all the guests are already here. "
"Okay Mama."Ahya said and mama turned to leave before giving me a beautiful smile.
Ahya pinned the dupatta on my head and this time the door opened to reveal my cousins as they brought a red long dupatta with them.
Ahya instructed everyone as I stood under the red cloth, my cousins holding the four corners above my head.As we moved out of the room and down the stairs. The men section was parted so no male was to come where the Mehndi function was taking place except the family members. My gaze was fixed on my feet as the girls led me to the veranda.
Once I was settled down the red cloth was removed and I had a better view around my surrounding. The lights were not very bright giving the perfect texture of mehndi.Soft traditional mehndi songs filled my ears with the beats of drum as the young girls sang along the lyrics.
Daadi Maa came before me followed by Aunty Naheed as they kissed my forehead and whispered thousands of blessings.Aunty Meena also came gushing about how beautiful I looked and blew thousands of dua's on me.Many other relatives also came wishing me.
Soon after some time dinner was served as the females enjoyed the wonderful dinner. The night was passing in laughter and joy.
My bangles were removed as the two henna designers started their magic on my arms as I sat there on a low stool with my hands spread out to my sides as the two ladies made beautiful patterns on my arms.
Some other girls also had henna cones as they decorated the hands of guests.Meena Aunty, Naheed Aunty and Zarah also sat on their station for their henna. And on my much insistence Mama and Ahya also sat down to get their henna done.My eyes roamed around trying the find Talia.I had seen her sometime ago when dinner was served not now she was nowhere to be seen.Turning a little to the side I saw her coming to sit besides me.Her dark brown eyes grazed my mehndi and she looked up to me, her eyes filling with appreciation.
"Wow Shahwar, your hands look beautiful."
"Thank You. Why don't you get some henna on your hands."I said softly.
She curved her dark painted lips before saying,
"I was wondering the same."
And then she stood up walking towards the girl who had just completed Zarah's henna. My eyes moved to my hands that had turned a little cold.My arms were fully covered with mehndi inner and outer sides both as the ladies now moved to my palms.I loved mehndi and its smell. And the women doing my mehndi were doing an amazing job.
Soon Imraan and Arsalan strolled in by the time most of the guests had left and only close ones remained. The two men dresses in green Kurta and white pajama pants looking handsome as ever. They awed at my hands as they sat before me, teasing me.Ahya who was sitting besides me as the henna designer completed her feet would occasionally make Imraan silent but then she would start teasing me.The other way round.
Time passed by quiet fast as I thought of the coming days. The wedding day.I day remained between.Only a day.My mehndi was dry and I was free to move my feet and hands. The design on my feet was a very simple and elegant one.So much time had passed that Aunty Naheed had even washed her hands.
When Imraan had done feeding me food on mama's insistence, I stood up to go to Daadi Maa's room. The older lady was tired of sitting so she had asked me to show her my mehndi before I sleep.
Zarah stood up to assist me but I refused her as I could easily move with my dress.I was about to go when Mama's soft voice reached my ears,
"Shahwar jaan, after showing your mehndi sleep.Okay."
I nodded at her as she kissed my head lovingly. My family calling out to me, 'The Bride'.I laughed at them and blow a flying kiss to them hearing Imraan say,
"It was directed to someone else but due to the wind it came our way." My cheeks flooded with crimson blush catching the meaning behind his words.
I opened my grandmother bedroom door but she was already asleep. Not disturbing her, I moved up the stairs.Passing the main balcony's door on my way to my bedroom I found it open.Curiosity got better of me as I took slow steps to inspect it.It wasn't usual for the balcony door to be open at this time of the night.
Standing by the door, two shadows caught my attention leaning near the railing.Moving closer a bit I froze. My mehndi clad hands freezing besides me as my eyes fixed on the two.Salah's form was leaning against the iron railing as Talia stood before him, her back facing me.Talia's head on Salah's shoulder as he stroked her long black hair.
They hadn't noticed me.I felt wetness on my cheeks, the crystal drop falling down my eyes.My tears.I remained shocked until Salah's eyes met mine. His green orbs fixing on mine in the light of the stars. His body had stiffened, his hand stopped stroking her hair.I bit my lips in order to stop the sob that wanted to rip out my mouth.
Without further delay I turned around before Salah's other hand raised in the air to stop me.Running to me door crying I opened it and slammed it shut.
I loved him and he was with someone else, with someone who I have bonded so much during the past days.My tears wont stop flowing. My mind suddenly remarked that it could be a friendly gesture but my heart couldn't stop defending Salah.Salah would never do this to me.I loved him and it was no wrong if he was there alone with Talia.Sitting on the bed I relived myself that it was not a big thing.Repeating all names of ALLAH I knew in my heart, I felt contended.
Only if I knew the storm awaited me..
