The Headband
"I think I see a cave below."
The team and I were flying on Appa with a cloud covering us as we flew. We didn't want to be seen by any Fire Nation citizens so we had to travel in secret.
"Sh! Keep quiet!" Sokka scolds as we land on one of the islands.
Aang airbends the cloud away from us, but if someone was around they would definitely see it, feel it, and hear it. We weren't exactly being quiet and sneaky to say the least.
Sokka hops of Appa and checks our surroundings before turning to us. Aang, being the sweet boyfriend he is, carried me off Appa and I kissed his cheek, causing him to blush.
"Great job with the cloud camo, but next time, let's disguise ourselves as the kind of cloud that knows how to keep its mouth shut." Sokka berated us with his arms crossed. Aang set me down and grabbed my hand.
"Yeah, we wouldn't want a bird to hear us chatting up there and turn us in." Toph sarcastically states, noticing the toucan puffins that stood on a rock that towered over Sokka.
Sokka turns back to us with skeptical eyes. "Hey, we're in enemy territory." He points above him to the four toucan puffins that are standing above his head. "Those are enemy birds."
One of the puffins jumps on Sokka's head and screeches. The four of us laugh before we walk toward a nearby cave and suddenly Sokka dives in front of us. He peeks his head up and looks around, suspiciously before he gets up and runs inside the cave.
Bubbles runs into my arms and hides her face. It doesn't mater what size the cave is, she is still afraid of dark cavernish places.
"Well, this is it. This is how we'll be living until the invasion begins. Hiding in cave after cave after cave after cave..." As Sokka says that, he gets less enthusiastic and lowers his head when he realizes how much we have to hide in caves.
"Sokka, we don't need to become cave people. What we need is some new clothes."
Katara's right. Our attire has gotten really old and we need new clothes, my dress isn't as nice as it was before.
"Yeah, blending in is better than hiding out." Aang agreed. "If we get Fire Nation disguises, we would be just as safe as we would be hiding in a cave."
"Yeah, I could use some new clothes." I agreed, looking down at my dress.
"Plus, they have real food out there." Toph adds from her spot on the ground. "Does anyone want to sit in the dirt and eat cave hoppers?" Toph punches the rock she was leaning on and multiple cave hoppers leaped out. Momo and Bubbles dive over to the hoppers and both eat one. I grimace at this and picked up Bubbles, taking the hopper out of her mouth. Momo looks at us and spits out a leg of the hopper.
"Looks like we got outvoted, guys. Let's get some new clothes." Sokka declared.
We walked over to a Fire Nation home that had a bunch of clothing that was on a clothesline that were drying. I spotted a top I really liked and wanted to grab it before my sister does. The five of us hid behind a rock wall, waiting for the right moment to grab the clothing.
"I don't know about this." Aang says with an unsure voice. "These clothes belong to somebody."
"I call the silk robe!"
Katara jumps out from behind the wall and grabs two outfits.
"I call the crop top and skirt!" I smile and follow my sister over to the clothesline. I snatch the clothing off and sprinted away over to my sister.
"Katara, can you help?" I aaked her and she smiled eagerly.
"Yes!"
Katara gets dressed in her outfit and she looked beautiful. I mean she already is beautiful, but the clothes matched her style and her hair was done up nicely.
"Okay, now you." Katara tells me before we start dressing myself.
I take off my dress and I pull on the red, ruffle off the shoulder crop top and slid on black tights. I pull on the black and red plaid skirt and slip on red flats. Katara pulled my hair into a high ponytail and stuck a Fire Lily in it. I brushed out my brown hair and spread out the red ombré at the bottom. The ombré matched well with the outfit and it made my eyes pop out.
"My sister is absolutely gorgeous." Katara smiles and creates a mirror out of ice with her bending. I admired myself in the mirror and I looked stunning. My curves worked well with the outfit, my six pack was showing which caused me to blush. "Since when did you get a six pack?"
"I don't know, they just appeared." I laughed with pink cheeks.
Katara chuckled at this and pulled me over to where the boys and Toph were. Katara wanted to do a 'big reveal' for me because she wanted to see Aang's face.
"How do I look?" Katara asked them.
Aang gave her a smile but it faded. "Your mom's necklace."
Katara touches her necklace chagrined. "Oh...oh, yeah. I guess it's pretty obviously water tribe, isn't it?"
She reluctantly removes it and puts on a smile. "How does Aya look?"
I shyly reveal myself and Aang's eyes grew wide while Sokka gave me an approving nod.
"Uhh.." Aang blushed, rubbing his head. I giggled and looked down at my feet.
"Don't ask me, I can't see her." Toph says.
I looked up and saw that Aang still hasn't removed his eyes from me.
"You look beautiful, Aya." Aang shyly remarks still with red cheeks.
"Thank you." I giggle quietly.
"That's my sister, Aang." Sokka flicks Aang's forehead. "Don't get to flirty."
"Sokka." I complained. "He's my boyfriend. He can flirt with me all he wants."
Aang gave me a loving smile and I returned it.
——
The team and I walk to a nearby town and Katara buys a new necklace to wear. She decided to buy me a similar one because there were two and she wanted me to have the same one. Toph buys a new headband and Sokka buys a topknot clasp.
From my arms, Bubbles chitters and I looked down remembering I have to hide her. Aang stuffs Momo inside his suit and I decided to give Aang Bubbles because she wouldn't fit anywhere in my outfit. It would look like I got breast implants if a did that and I didn't need a bigger chest anyway.
The five of us stood behind a building at the Fire Nation town and Aang turned to us.
"I used to visit my friend Kuzon here a hundred years ago. So everyone just follow my lead and stay cool. Or as they say in the Fire Nation - "Stay flamin'"!" Aang smiles before he saunters out and we following. We walked by a man eating a kebab on the sidewalk and Aang waves to him. "Greetings, my good Hotman!"
I chuckle lightly at his happy attitude.
"Uh, hi, I guess." The man replies with surprise. Maybe Aang's lingo is a little out of date, just guessing.
Sokka leads us a butcher's ship and Aang wasn't fond of the idea.
"Oh, we're going to a meat place?" Aang asks.
"Come on, Aang. Every one here eats meat... even the meat!" Sokka beams and we look over to see a big cow-hippo eating a pile of meat.
To Aang's dismay, I love meat and he doesn't. That's our biggest difference but I do like vegan food.
Aang grimaced. "You guys go ahead. I'll just get some lettuce out of the garbage."
Aang and I share a hug before I following my siblings inside the shop.
——
It's been hours since we've seen Aang and we were all worried. We couldn't find him in the town and now I'm panicking on where he is. It's pathetic on how worried I get about Aang, but can you blame me. He's the Avatar, in the middle of the Fire Nation town, and the whole world thinks he's dead. It would be a huge issue if someone found out he was alive and then our invasion plan would be ruined.
The four of us were sitting back in the cave waiting for Aang's return. Katara was holding me close in attempt to calm me down and it was working physically, not mentally.
I heard a noise enter the cave and I looked to the entrance. I saw Aang walk and I ran over to him, embracing him.
"Where have you been?" Katara asked The Avatar. "We've been worried sick! Aya was worried something happened to you."
I got a good look at Aang and he was covered in burn marks. He loosely wrapped his arms around me and Bubbles popped out of his suit.
"I got invited to play with some kids after school." Aang told us removing his headband and Momo and Bubbles ran over to the fire.
School?
Sokkka stood up from the ground with wide eyes. "After what?!"
"I enrolled in a Fire Nation school." Aang grinned and put his hands on his hips.
I let go of my boyfriend and gave him a confused look.
"Enrolled in what?!" Sokka exclaimed in shock and horror before he passes out.
Sokka recovered from his unconsciousness and we all sat by the fire. Aang and I were sharing a rock while the others sat on separate ones. Bubbles was on my lap and Momo was perched on my shoulder
"Aang, I'm trying to be mature and not immediately shoot down your idea. But it sounds... really terrible." Sokka pointed out and I nodded.
"Yeah, we got our outfits. What do you need to go to school for?" Toph asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Every minute I'm in that classroom. I'm learning new things about the fire nation. I already have a picture of Fire Lord Ozai." Aang pulled out a poster of a menacing looking Firelord Ozai and then he showed us a picture of a cheesier copy of the poster. "And he's one I made out of noodles.
"Impressive, I admit. But I still think it's too dangerous." Sokka admits.
"I guess we'll never find out about the secret river then. It goes right to the Fire Lord's palace. We were supposed to learn about it in class tomorrow..." Aang remarks slyly to convince my brother.
"Hmm... I am a fan of secret rivers." Sokka says relentlessly. "Fine, let's stay a few more days."
Aang shot up with his arms up. "Flamey-o, Hotman!" Aang kisses my cheek before he runs off.
"Flamey-0?" Sokka asked our sister who shrugged.
——
"Thank you for coming Mr and Mrs..."
"Fire! Wang Fire and this is my wife, Sapphire!"
I never thought I would have to play the role of a ten year old so Aang doesn't get caught. He got in a fight at school today and now we are talking to the headmaster about it. Sokka had a fake mustache on and Katara was pretending to be pregnant.
"Sapphire Fire, nice to meet you." Katara greets and pats my back. "And this our daughter Natsumi."
My hair was done in pigtails and I carrying a stuffed animal in my arms. Don't ask where I found.
"Hi." I greeted in a high voice.
"Mr and Mrs. Fire. You're son has been enrolled here for two days and he's already causing problems." The headmaster informed my siblings. "He's argued with his history teacher, disrupted music class, and ruffed up my star pupil."
"Haha." I chuckled and Sokka slapped me upside the head. "Ow! Dad!"
I'm a pretty good actress.
"Quiet!" Sokka shushed me.
"My goodness! That doesn't sound like our Kuzon." Katara gasped.
"That's what any mother would say ma'am." The headmaster indulgently says. "Nonetheless, you're forewarned. If he acts up one more time, I'll have him sent to reform school... by which I mean the coal mines. Are we clear?"
"Don't you worry Mister Headmaster! I'll straighten this boy out something fierce!" Sokka tells the headmaster in his fake accent before blustering in Aang's face. "Young man, as soon as we get home, you're gonna get the punishment of a lifetime!"
"That's what I like to hear." The headmaster says sitting back.
We all stood up and Katara grabbed my hand like a mother would as we walked out. Sokka playing the role of a strict and overbearing father seemed to suit his personality well.
We returned to our cave and I took out the obnoxious pigtails. I hated pigtails ever since I was little, they make me look ridiculous.
"That settles it. No more school for you young man!"
To any other kid, they would be ecstatic about that but Aang's not like other kids.
I redid my hair like it was before and Aang stood up.
"I'm not ready to leave." Aang protests. "I'm having fun for once. Just being a normal kid. You don't what it's like Sokka. You get to be normal all the time."
"Haha." Toph and I laughed. Sokka narrowed his eyes at us and I grinned.
"Listen, guys, those kids at school are the future of the Fire Nation. If we wanna change this place for the better, we need to show them a little taste of freedom." Aang explains.
"What could you possibly do for a country of depraved little fire monsters?" Sokka asked and I glared at him, whacking his arm. "Not you."
"I'm gonna throw them..." Aang does a quick tap dance. "A secret dance party!"
We all stared at him and Sokka points to the side.
"Go to your room!"
——
Despite how crazy it was, we all agreed to throw a party for the Fire Nation kids. Sokka wasn't fond of the idea but he was outvoted so it doesn't matter.
Toph was earthbending platforms, tables, and chairs. I was lighting the candles that were surrounding us, Katara was waterbending beverages, and Sokka was trying to light candles but I beat him to each one.
"I can't believe we're having a dance party. It seems so... silly." Sokka mentions as I lit the last candle.
Seconds later Toph says, "they're coming! Everyone stood bending!"
Aang went up to Appa. "Sorry buddy, You should probably wait out back." Appa grumbles and shuffles into a tunnel at the back of the cave. "I know, you've got fancier feet than anybody...and six of 'em!"
Bubbles follows Appa and Aang turned to us with a smile.
Soon enough the party was in full swing. A group kids were playing instruments on the big platform Toph created. Katara, Toph, and I were sitting at a rock table enjoying beverages.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Aang announces and leaps in front of them. "The Flamey-os! Yeah, this ought to get everybody moving."
Aang turned around and saw no one was moving. They all seemed hesitant and scared.
"Now what do we do?" A kid asked.
"This is when you start dancing." Aang tells him.
"I don't think my parents want me dancing in a cave." Another kid says as his head sinks into his collar like a turtle.
"Yeah! What if someone finds out?!" Another kid asked with nervousness, looking around anxiously.
"Oh boy... Listen, guys, dancing isn't something you think about. It's a form of self-expression that no one can ever take away from you." Aang explains to the group.
"Maybe it was different in the colonies, Kuzon." The first kid stepped forward. "But we don't do that here."
"Sure you do! You have for generations!" Aang beams. "It just so happens that I know several classic fire nation dances. A hundred years ago, this was known as "The Phoenix Flight."
Aang squats down and runs in a circle as he kicks his legs. The other kids were impressed by his dance.
"And this was the "Camelephant Strut."
He hops on one foot toward the kids, alternating feet with each hop, passing his palms in front of his face as he does so. I smiled as Aang danced, he's amazing.
Aang somersaults forward and lands in front of two girls who giggled. He backhand springs into a backflip and lands on a foot bowing. The crowd cheered with amazement as Aang danced.
"Who knew Twinkle Toes could dance?" Toph asked with smile.
My eyes followed my boyfriend as he danced and my cheeks turned pink. My boyfriend just got more attractive.
Aang continued to dance and something struck my eyes. He went up to this pretty girl and offered her to dance.
I folded my arms and glared at this. Aang pulled her into the center of the room.
"And this is how they do it in the ballrooms at Ba Sing Se."
He passes his arms in an undulating motion across his chest, stepping from side to side as he does so. The girl begins to imitate his movement and I watched with a jealous look.
"Wow, they look pretty good together." Sokka mentions and I look away.
"Whatever."
It wasn't just jealousy I was feeling, it was sadness too. I thought Aang wasn't the type of boyfriend who would do this.
Soon, more kids joined Aang and the girl with the dancing.
"Yeah, that's it! That's the sound of happy feet!" Aang says as he notices more kids joining in.
"All right, go with that! Everybody free style!" Aang announces. Katara, Toph, and Sokka got up to but I stayed sitting down. I wasn't in the middle to dance, especially when Aang and the girl are dancing together.
I looked up from my hand when I saw Aang offering his hand to me. I averted my eyes, twiddling my fingers
"I don't know, Aang." I shook my head, shyly. "I'm not much a dancer and you seem to be having a good time with that girl."
"On Ji? She's just a friend." Aang denies and gives me a smirk. "I'd rather dance with the most beautiful girl here and that's my girlfriend. Take my hand."
I felt relief rush through me at this and smiled softly. "Okay."
I take his hand and he pulls me to the center of the room where all the kids are. He wraps his arms around my waist and whispers something in my ear.
We bowed and began to dance. I've been teaching Aang some fighting techniques and I guess it's similar to dancing. We're just gonna modify it a little.
We stretch out an arm and touch our wrist circling around each other. Switching directions frequently and I noticed that everyone stopped dancing to watch us.
I got nervous and shifted my eyes side to side. "Aang, everyone's watching."
"Don't worry about them." Aang tells me and gives me a sly smirk. "It's just you and me right now, Angel."
My cheeks turned red and I formed a smirk. The two of us begin to dance together that involved a bunch of acrobatic tricks like cartwheels, backflips, kicking over each other's heads. Aang brought me close to him and touched his nose to mine, smiling for a second before we continued our elaborate dance together.
(It's the same dance Aang and Katara did)
"Is that Kuzon's girlfriend?" A girl whispered and I blushed.
"She's so pretty!" Another one giggled.
To finish the dance, I did a backhand spring toward Aang and he grabbed my hand bringing me into his arms. I landed with my hands against his chest and his arms were around my waist. Our noses were touching and we were smiling at one another, while sweating. The crowd cheered and applauded loudly for us.
"I love you, Angel." Aang whispers, passionately.
"I love you too." I replied with the same tone of voice. Suddenly, everyone stopped dancing and I turned to see the headmaster at the entrance of the cave and I widened my eyes.
"Uh..." I pulled away from Aang and pointed toward the headmaster.
"He's the one we want. The boy with the headband!"
"Uh, oh!" Aang says and pulls me away from the entrance.
Thankfully, the other kids were on our side. As the guards and headmaster searched for Aang, the kids pretended to be Aang by putting a headband around their head to confuse the headmaster and the guards.
It worked out perfectly and the headmaster and guards were distracted enough for us to escape. I waited for Aang to joins us and he bowed to one the kids before following us to the back of the cave.
We boarded Appa and left the cave before we could get caught. All of us were sat in the saddle and Bubbles was in my lap, sleeping peacefully. I sitting next to Aang with my arms wrapped around his arm, leaning my head on his shoulder.
"We're safe, Sokka. You can take off the mustache now." Katara tells our brother who hasn't removed his disguise yet.
"Oh no, I can't." Sokka strokes his fake beard. "It's permanently glued to my skin."
"I wonder how Suki would react to that mustache." I smirk and Sokka's eyes widened with nervousness.
"Way to go, Dancypants." Toph praises Aang. "I think you really did help those kids. You taught them to be free."
Aang rubs his head. "I don't know. It was just a dance party that's all."
"Well, that was some dance party, Aang." Katara smiles softly and Aang returns it.
"I agree." I kissed my boyfriend's cheek who blushed.
Sokka clapped slowly. "Flamey-o sir. Flamey-o."
