The Awakening

It's been weeks. It's been weeks since Aang got struck by Azula and was revived. It's been hard seeing him lay in bed and not moving, but he's breathing and he's alive.

After the incident in Ba Sing Se and watching it get captured by the Fire Nation, the team, my mother, and I flew to Chameleon Bay where we found Hakoda and the other Water Tribe Men. Ruka was relieved to be back with her tribe and Hakoda was glad to know his best warrior was safe. The Earth King and Bosco decided to go off on there own adventure together in disguise so they are gone. Unfortunately, Chameleon Bay was overrun by the Fire Nation so instead of attacking we fled and stole one of their ships. So, what are we doing now?

We were sailing on a Fire Nation ship in disguises and are traveling West. We've seen a few other Fire Navy ships but they haven't bothered us.

In the last few weeks, Sapphire hasn't been contacting me as much. Ever since the fight at Ba Sing Se and I grew my fire wings, she's only contacted me twice. The day after I got my wings, my hair changed and it now has red ombré at the bottom of it. Sapphire spoke to me about how Aang came back to life and she told me some shocking news.

I revived him. My tears brought him back to life, because I have the ability to heal the sick and injured. Katara's water from the North Pole helped by awakening his Avatar spirit, but I brought him back to life.

I revived the Avatar. That's big.

Every night, I visit Aang and just sit there hoping he would wake up. I miss him so much, it's killing me and not a day goes by that I don't see him. Everyone wants him to wake up and be okay, but I'm the worst one.

I just love him so much.

Night had fallen on the Fire Navy ship and everyone was asleep, except for me. I stood on the edge of the deck and stared out at the ocean below us. The beautiful moon reflected off the water and it made the water shine, stunningly.

I leaned on the edge of the boat and sighed.

There goes my heart beating
'Cause you are the reason
I'm losing my sleep
Please come back now
There goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I'm still breathing
I'm hopeless now

I stood up straight and put my hands to my chest.

I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, 'cause I need you to see
That you are the reason

I looked down at my hands and felt tears escape my gold orbs.

There goes my hand shaking
And you are the reason
My heart keeps bleeding
I need you now

I looked up at the moon that dazzled the night sky and smiled softly.

If I could turn back the clock
I'd make sure the light defeated the dark
I'd spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe
And I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken

I grabbed the edge of the ship and hopped onto it. I placed my hands on my chest and blinked my tears away.

Oh, 'cause I need you to see
That you are the reason, oh
I don't wanna fight no more
I don't wanna hurt no more
I don't wanna cry no more
Come back, I need you to hold me closer now
You are the reason, oh
Just a little closer now
Come a little closer now
I need you to hold me tonight

I lowered my hands and gazed at the moon above me.

I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
'Cause I need you to see
That you are the reason

The next day, I was talking with my mother. It's been great to talk with her and spend time with her after all this time. Ruka is a very good hearted and kind woman, but she is also a very determined and tough warrior like myself. I guess I get my personality from her along with my father Iroh. They both are very caring and loyal people that I luckily get to call my parents.

I hope Iroh is okay. Last time I saw him was at Ba Sing Se and he was fighting off Zuko and Azula. A part of me thinks he was able to fight them off, but the other part believes he was defeated.

"Mom, what if Aang never wakes up? What if he-what if he didn't-"

"Aya, sweetie." Ruka stopped me from rambling. "Don't worry so much. Don't look at the negative things that could happen, just think about the positivity."

I nodded at this and Ruka brought me into a hug.

"Momo? Bubbles?"

I pulled away from my mom when I heard the voice. I recognized it immediately and turned toward it to see someone I've been wanting to see for weeks.

"Twinkle Toes! That's gotta be you!" Toph smiles and I felt joy enter my soul from head to toe.

"Aang..." I smile softly as Toph, Katara, and I race over to him. "You're awake."

"Finally." Katara said with relief.

"Are you sure?" Aang asks rubbing his eyes. "I feel like I'm dreaming."

I gently hugged my boyfriend and sighed with relief. "You're not dreaming. You're finally awake."

I pull away and my brother comes over disguised as a Fire Nation guard and hugs the Avatar. "Aang, good to see you back with the living, buddy!"

"Sokka?" Aang begins to breath heavily and starts to pass out.

"Uh-oh, somebody catch him, he's going to-"

Before Toph could finish, I quickly catch Aang before he hits the ground and he falls limp in my arms.

——

Aang woke up not to long after he passed out and I sat in front of Aang with my siblings and Toph standing by. Aang receives a Fire Nation robe and I can tell he's confused and stressed out.

"Why are we on a Fire Nation ship? Why is everyone dressed this way? And why am I the only one who's completely out of it?"

Toph, Sokka, and Katara left us alone and I put my hand on his shoulder. "You need to take it easy, okay? You got hurt pretty bad." I glance at his newly grown hair and I smile. "I like your hair."

I really like it.

"I have hair?!" He expresses and feels his head with wide eyes. "How long was I out?"

"A few weeks."

"Everything okay?"

My mother approaches us and I look away. "We're fine, mom."

"I'm Ruka, Aya's mother." She introduces, putting her hand out to shake Aang's.

"He knows who you are I just said 'mom didn't I?" I retorted.

I know it sounds rude to talk to him like this, but I wanted to talk to Aang alone.

"I guess you're right." She agreed.

"Nice to officially meet you, Warrior Ruka." Aang smiles offering his hand.

"It's an honor to meet you." The two shake hands.

"Okay, you've met. Now, can you give my boyfriend and I some privacy?" I asked my mother a little bitterly.

"Of course." My mother walks off and I watched her leave.

"Are you mad at your mom or something?" Aang asked me and I looked at him.

"What? No, why would you think that?" I asked him and Aang shrugged.

"I don't know." He muttered and suddenly gasped in pain grabbing his stomach.

"Maybe we should go upstairs." I suggested and helped him up. "You need healing session."

"Shouldn't we get Katara?" He asked me thinking only Katara can heal him.

"Not really." I smile softly.

We went to the room Aang was sleeping in and I prepared the healing fire in my hands. Aang was curious about how I can heal him.

"I thought only waterbenders can heal people." Aang said as my fire began to glow a yellow color.

"Well, being the Fire Angel I have the ability to heal anyone." I told him and motioned him to turn around. He didn't question this and I exhaled softly.

"Tell me where the pain feels most intense. The fire is warm so don't flinch." I warned him and gently placed my hands near his wound. I heard him groan in pain as I massaged his wound with the fire. The amount of energy I able to feel was insane.

"A little higher." He groans and I shift my hands higher up and he lets out a small grunt.
"Wow, you're definitely in the right area there."

"I can feel a lot of energy twisted up around there. Let me just see if I can..." I slowly removed the fire from his wound and Aang arched his back in pain.

I looked at him with shock as I watched him arch back. He slumped his shoulders over moments later with shock all over his face.

"I went down!" He exclaims. "I didn't just get hurt, did I? It was worse than that. I was gone. But you brought me back." He turned to me and I shrugged with a shy smile.

"Katara used the spirit water from the North Pole to help, but my tears brought you back to life." My cheeks turned pink and I looked down shyly. "I have a power inside me that's able to heal the anyone."

"You saved me." Aang told me with weary eyes and I kissed his cheek.

"You need to rest."

——

The next day, the team, Hakoda, Ruka, Bato, and I were sitting down eating noodles, explaining to Aang what happened.

"After what happened in Ba Sing Se, we had to get you to safety." Sokka began. "We flew back to Chameleon Bay, where we found my father and the other Water Tribe men. After twelve long years, Ruka was finally reunited with the other warriors and she was safe." Ruka and I smiled at one another when he said that. "The Earth King decided he wanted to travel the world in disguise, so he set off alone. Well, not completely alone."

The Earth King never leaves his bear behind.

"Soon, the bay was overrun with Fire Nation ships. Rather than fight them all, we captured a single ship and made it our disguise. Since then, we've been traveling west. " Sokka points to Chameleon Bay and moves his finger across The Serpent's Pass. "We crossed through The Serpent's Pass a few days ago. We've seen a few Fire Nation ships, but none have bothered us."

"So, what now?" Aang asked.

"We've been working on a modified version of the invasion plan." Hakoda informed.

"It's Sokka's invasion plan." Katara corrected with annoyance.

"Yes, Sokka's plan. We won't be able to mount a massive invasion without the Earth King's armies, but the solar eclipse will still leave the Fire Nation vulnerable." Hakoda continued.

"Unfortunately, this affects Aya and she won't be as powerful as she can be, but she will still be able to firebend." Sokka adds and I avert my eyes at this but kept a small smile on my face. "So, we're planning a smaller invasion. Just a ragtag team of our friends and allies from around the Earth Kingdom. We already ran into Pipsqueak and The Duke."

We looked over and saw Pipsqueak with the Duke on his shoulders and they both were eating.

"Good to see you again, Aang." The Pipsqueak grins with his mouth full.

"And the best part is, the eclipse isn't even our biggest advantage." Sokka leans in whispering. "We have a secret. You!"

"Me?" Aang asks with confusion.

"Yep! The whole world thinks you're dead!" Sokka grins and stands up with his arms up. "Isn't that great!?"

I looked at Aang who was horrified by his statement. Aang got up and went up to the edge of the boat. He was in complete and utter disbelief about this.

"The whole world thinks I'm dead? How is that good news?! That's terrible!" Aang protests.

"No, it's great. It means the Fire Nation won't be hunting us anymore. And even better, they won't expect you on The Day of Black Sun." Sokka remarks, approaching Aang.

"No, no, no, no, no. You have no idea. This is so messed up!" Aang denies, grabbing his head.

In the distance, the horn of another ship blares and we turn to see a Fire Navy ship was sailing toward us.

"I'll handle this." Aang declares and opens his glider. "The Avatar is back. Uh!" Aang flinches in pain, but he manages to grab the wings.

"Aang wait!" I stopped him. "Remember, they don't know we're not Fire Nation."

Aang reluctantly puts his glider away and Hakoda and Bato grabbed their helmets.

"Everyone just stay calm. Bato and I will take care of this." Hakoda assured us and put on their helmets. Pipsqueak and The Duke covered up Appa and Momo and Bubbles joined their friend under the sheet.

My siblings and I join Aang, Toph, and Ruka in a stairway that's leading down so we won't be seen.

"I hate not being able to do anything." Aang mutters bitter and I grab his hand.

"Hopefully you won't need too." Toph comments back.

The other ship meets up with us and it lowers a bridge onto ours. A Fire Nation officer walks across with two guards behind him.

"Commander, why are you off course?" The officer asked Hakoda. "All Western Fleet ships are supposed to be moving toward Ba Sing Se to support the occupation."

"Actually, we're from the Eastern Fleet. We have orders to deliver some cargo." Hakoda informed the officer.

"Ah, Eastern Fleet." The officer ponders aloud. "Well, nice of Admiral Chan to let us know he was sending one of his ships our way."

Lovely sarcasm from a Fire Nation Officer is nice to see every once in awhile.

"I am sure Admiral Chan meant no disrespect, sir." Bato tells him.

"I mean, how hard is it to write a quick note and send a hawk our way?" The Officer asked them with annoyance.

"Next time, we'll send two hawks to be sure you get the message." Hakoda assures the officer and they bow at each other.

Hakoda and Bato walk away but I listened to the officers conversation with his guards.

"Sir, Admiral Chan has been on leave for two months at Ember Island." One guard tells the officer and I narrowed my eyes.

"What? Why doesn't anyone ever tell me anything? Something's not right. They should've known that. I think this is a captured ship." The officer mutters and I heard them walking away. "Just stay quiet until we're safely across the ramp. Then we'll sink this ship!"

Mine and Toph's eyes went wide at this and we both pop out of the trench.

"They know!"

I form two fire whips as Toph metalbends the ground and I wrap up the officers ankles. Toph makes the bridge fall and I toss the Officer off the side. Katara runs up to the side of the ship and she bends up the water to push the opposing ship away from us. Our ship begins to make our escape, but to our dismay the other ship launches fireballs at us.

"Load the Toph!" Toph yells and Pipsqueak puts a rock in front of her feet and she bends it across the ocean to the other ship. It hits the trebuchet and it crumbles to pieces. Another fireballs gets blasted toward us and I jumped forward, sending a massive fire blast at it, demolishing it.

On the side of the ship, a ballista is fired toward the bottom and the projectile punctures a hole in the ship. Water began to get sucked into the hole the ballista created and the ship slowly started to sink.

However, Katara pushes her arms down and exhales freezing mist towards the punctured hole in hopes of stoping the leak.

"I'm gonna give us some cover!" Katara announces. She presses her arms down, pushing down the water between the two ships. A cloud of mist forms and rises up as she lifts her arms up and bends a huge cloud of mist into the air. She pushes her arms out, making the mist float behind the our ship, clouding the view. Both ships were now clouded with mist and we couldn't see anything but mist that surrounded us.

Since, we couldn't see anything due to the heavy mist we all scattered when a fireball pierced through the mist. It smashes into a pile of rock disks, destroying it in the process.

The cover Katara gave us wasn't the best idea.

After a minute, the mist faded away and we were now seen again by the other ship. A fireball caused one of the engines to set on fire, but Katara extinguished it with her waterbending.

"How we doing?" Toph asked over the commotion.

"Things couldn't get much worst."

To Sokka's dismay, a giant serpent emerged from the water and shot up, shrieking.

"Way to open your big mouth!" I exclaimed at my brother with folded arms.

"The universe just loves proving me wrong, doesn't it?" Sokka asked, staring at the vile sea creature.

"You make it too easy!" Toph remarks.

From behind us, the opposing ship launched a fireball and it hit the serpent. Seeing it as a threat, the serpent swam over to the ship and wrapped itself around it. We ran over to see that the other ship had three serpents covering it as we sailed away and I smile with relief.

"Thank you, The Universe!" Sokka cheered.

——

Later, we docked at a nearby town so we can get some dinner.

My siblings, Toph, and I visited Aang in his room so we can all go get something to eat.

"Hey, Aang, we're going into town to find some dinner." Toph told Aang who sat up at our voices.

Aang grabbed his stomach when it growled. "Well, I am pretty hungry. Maybe dinner's a good idea."

"Here, tie this around your head. It'll cover your arrow." Sokka offers a red headband to him and Aang frowns.

"I'm not going out if I can't wear my arrow proudly." Aang argues before he turns away laying down.

C'mon Aang, be practical." Sokka counters.

"You guys go ahead without us." I told Sokka, touching his shoulder. "We'll catch up with you."

My siblings and Toph left and I sit down next to Aang's body. I gently touch his shoulder and I could sense the tension in him.

"I understand what's it like to be a secret and why it bothers you." I told him and looked away. "I lived that way for the last few months. You don't want people to think you've failed."

"You're right, I don't." Aang bitterly replies. "But the problem is I did fail."

"Aang, that's not true." I sighed.

"It is true." Aang sat up and put his feet over the edge of the bed to stand up. "I was in Ba Sing Se. I was there, but I lost. And now, the Earth Kingdom has fallen for good."

I stood up and shook my head. "We still have the invasion plan. It's not for good."

"And I hate the invasion plan, too!" Aang yells and rips the tapestry off the wall. "I don't want you or anyone else risking your lives to fix my mistakes!" I put my hand on my chest and felt my heart break. "I've always known I had to face the Firelord, but now I know I need to do it alone."

Aang thinks he has to do this on his own, but he doesn't. He has all of us, he has me, his Fire Angel.

"Aang-" I began, approaching him but he shook
his head.

"Aya, please." He stopped me and I stepped back. "Just go. Please."

I looked down sorrow and walked away. I felt tears form and slowly roll down my cheeks. I stopped at the doorway and I turned to him.

"Is there anything you need?" I asked him.

"I need to redeem myself." Aang says. "I need my honor back."

I went to say something else but instead I left the room without another word.

——

I returned to Aang's room after dinner with some food. I was really worried about him, he's not himself. It reminds me of when we were in the desert and we lost Appa. I was hoping he wouldn't be like that again, but he believes he needs to do this on his own when he doesn't have too.

I can see where he's coming from about failing and letting others down because he's the Avatar, but if he didn't have us he wouldn't even be out of that iceberg. He needs to believe he's not alone.

I walked into his room. "I brought you some food." My eyes grew when I noticed Aang was missing along with his staff. "Oh no.." I dropped the tray and sprinted out of the room.

I ran to the top of the bridge tower where my mother, Hakoda, and Bato were talking. I looked at them with tears in my eyes and Bato and Hakoda looked at my mother.

"We'll leave you two alone." Bato told us and the two men walked away.

My mother stepped closer to me with worry. "What's wrong, sweetie."

"He left." I said.

"What?"

"Aang... we just took his glider and just disappeared." I cried, shutting my eyes with frustration. "He has this ridiculous notion that he has to save the world alone. That it's all his responsibility."

"Maybe that's he way of being brave." My mother says and I shook my head with a frown.

"It's not brave!" I exclaimed, causing my hands to lit up with fire. "It's selfish and stupid. We could be helping him. And I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much that we need him too? How much I need him!" I begin to sob uncontrollably at this point. "How could he just leave us behind?"

My mother glanced away at this. "You're talking about me too, aren't you?"

I let her words sink and I looked down. It's true, she did give me up and leave me behind with Hakoda and Kya to take care of me.

I shut my eyes, letting my tears flow out but I calmed down and the fire vanished from my hands.

"How could you leave me, mom?" I asked her wiping my tears away. "I mean, I know I had Hakoda, Kya, and Kanna, but that didn't last long. Kya got taken away, Hakoda left to fight in the war. I had Kanna with me and she loved and cared for me like they did but after I figured out I was adopted..." I paused and looked at her. "I was lost without my mother."

I once again started to cry and turned away to sob.

"Sweetie, I'm so sorry." My mother apologized and I looked at her. I wrapped her in a hug and cried into her shoulder, she embraced me tightly.

"I understand why you left, I do." I sniffled. "You were doing it to protect me and I understand that, but I'm so confused on why I feel this way. I'm so confused and angry and hurt. And now that Aang left, I feel lost without him now."

"Aya, I love you more than anything else in this world." My mother told me, passionately. "Everyday when I was in that cell at the Fire Nation, I thought about you everyday. I missed you so much, I couldn't even sleep. Then, when we found each other at Ba Sing Se, I felt whole again and now I'm here with you."

I shut my eyes and continued to silently cry.

"I love you mom."

"I love you too."

——

The next day, we found Aang on a small island with a volcano that was in Fire Nation territory. The team and I set off on our own so we can find Aang and go back to how things were before. I'm gonna miss my mother and Hakoda, but we have to help Aang and help him save the world. We'll see them on the day of the invasion.

I was the first one off Appa and Momo flew over to him with Bubbles and they licked his cheeks.

Tears of happiness filled my eyes when I saw he was alright. He was laying down at the shore and my siblings, Toph, and I approached him.

I slid onto my knees and hugged him. "You're okay!"

Aang and I looked at each other. He gave me a smile before he connected our lips and I wrapped my arms around his neck kissing back. It's been weeks since we last kissed.

We pulled away when my siblings and Toph came in and joined our hug, along with Momo, Bubbles, and Appa.

Aang looked away. "I have so much to do."

"I know, but you'll have our help." Katara says.

"You didn't think you could get out of training just by coming to the Fire Nation, did you?" Toph joked.

"What about the invasion?" Aang asked.

"We'll join up with my dad, Ruka, and the invasion force on the day of the eclipse." Sokka explains.

"Hey, what's-" Toph starts but she pauses when she picks up Aang's glider from the ocean. It was burnt and tattered. "Oh...it's your glider."

Aang picked it up and we stood up with him.

"That's okay. If someone saw it, it would give away my identity. It's better for now that no one knows I'm alive."

Aang turns around and jumps into a mound near the pouring lava. Aang stood there for a moment before he spins his glider above his head and slams it into the ground. Aang leaped back over to us and he intertwined our fingers as we watched the glider ignite with fire.
