Day of the Black Sun Part 2
Aya's POV
The battle continued and we were still winning, but it was getting rough. Sokka, my mother, and I were huddled around a map, studying it. I looked up and saw Katara coming back with Hakoda and Sokka and I smiled.
"Dad!" We both smiled and approached the two.
"You're on your feet again." Sokka said.
Hakoda sits down, weakly. "Thanks to your sister. I'm in no shape to fight, but maybe there's some way I can help."
"Everything's going smoothly and the eclipse hasn't even kicked in yet." My mother mentioned and I was looking up in to the sky. I saw something in the distance.
"Let's hope our luck holds out." Hakoda remarks. "Aya, you seem distracted. Is something wrong?"
"Yeah." I say with furrowed eyebrows. "Is that...is that Aang?"
Katara and Sokka were both shocked. "What?"
Aang rides in on his glider, dodging several fireballs. He lands in front of us and I immediately hug him.
"This isn't good, is it?" I ask him and I felt him shake his head. We pulled away and looked at everyone.
"Please tell me you're here because the Fire Lord turned out to be a big wimp and you didn't even need the eclipse to take him down." Sokka explains.
We kneel with Sokka as Aang spoke. "He wasn't home. No one was. The entire palace city is abandoned."
Sokka's eyes grew with epiphany. "He knew."
Aang rubs his fingers along the ground idly. "It's over. The Fire Lord is probably long-gone; far away on some remote island where he'll be safe during the eclipse."
Sokka thinks for a moment before talking. "No. My instincts tell me he wouldn't go too far. He would have a secret bunker; somewhere he could go and be safe during the siege but still be close enough to lead his nation."
"If it's an underground secret bunker we're looking for," Toph points to herself. "I'm just the girl to find it."
"And I can light the way." I add with a smile.
Sokka pulled out a device. "The mechanist gave me this timing device. It looks like we've got about ten minutes until the full eclipse. Ten minutes to find the Fire Lord."
"We can still do this. We can still win the day." Aang declared.
"Wait! If they knew we were coming it could all be a trap." Katara protested. "Maybe we should use the time we have left to make sure we all get out of here safely."
Katara has a point, but we came here to fight and we need to give it our all.
"Everyone who's here today came prepared to risk everything for this mission. They know what's at stake." Hakoda proclaims.
"If there's still a chance and there's still hope, I think they would want Aang to go for it." My mother continued.
"What do you think? You're the one that has to face the Fire Lord. Whatever you decide, I'm with you." Sokka asked Aang.
Aang rises and turns away. "I've gotta try."
After that, Aang, Toph, Sokka, and I took off on Appa.
——
Appa flies over to the volcano and lands on top of it. We hop off the bison and Toph searches around for any vibrations of an underground bunker.
"Do you feel anything down there?" Aang asked.
Toph places her hands on the ground. "Yep. There are natural tunnels criss-crossing through the inside of the volcano."
"Anything else? Is there a structure somewhere?" I asked her.
Toph takes her hands and digs her fingers into the surface. "There is something big, dense and made of metal deep in the heart of the volcano."
Sokka raises his arms up. "Sounds like a secret bunker to me."
Toph earthbends a hole into the volcano and Sokka follows her into the tunnel. Aang and I turn to Momo, Bubbles, and Appa.
"Stay safe." I tell them.
"We'll be back soon." Aang adds and we jump into the hole.
Toph was ahead and and surveys the area using her seismic senses.
"This way! That one's a dead end!" Toph exclaims and sprints down the right
"What would we do without you?" Sokka asked as we follow her and walk passed magma channels.
"Perish in burning hot magma." Toph mentions.
"If Aya wasn't here, than yeah, pretty much." Sokka agreed, staring at the magma.
We arrive at a chamber where magma erupts from several spouts in the ground.
"The tunnel continues on the other side and it leads right to the bunker." Toph explained to us.
"We'll have to be fast, but careful." Sokka tells us and begins to walk forward only for a geyser of magma to erupt, nearly striking him. Aang uses airbending to cool and solidify the gush.
"How is that careful?" Aang asked.
"I was wrong. We need to be fast, careful and lucky." Sokka corrected. "And we need Aya to lead the way."
I rolled my eyes and try my best to keep the magma calm as we leap over the spouts of lava. We pass this chamber and arrive at a rock ledge, completely surrounded by molten lava.
"There's no floor." Sokka pointed out. "It's just a river of lava."
Aang opens his staff and I open my wings all the way. "Aya and I can each take one of you."
Toph immediately comes up to me and smiles. "I call Aya!"
I grin at Toph before we each took off. Sokka was holding onto Aang's glider while I was carrying Toph across the lava. They were both screaming in fear as we flew across the lava and we landed swiftly on the other side.
We approach a large metal, dome like structure with a door.
"That's some door!" Sokka exclaimed.
Toph walked over and knocked on the door. "Not a problem."
Using metalbending, she jams into the door with her elbows, creating cracks in the metal. She steps back several feet, kisses her fingertips and splits the door wide open. Stepping inside the interior, she points in a direction and runs off; Aang and I follow in pursuit.
"I am so glad we added you to the group!" Sokka mentioned from behind.
We sprint down the tunnels and turn a corner, we heard someone and immediately corner him to attack. The elderly Fire Nation man put his hands up up in surrender and spoke.
"The Fire Lord's chamber is that way, down the hall, to the left, and up the stairs, you can't miss it!" He panics as we stare him down intensely.
"Thanks!" Aang smiles before we continue our way down the tunnel.
"Only thirty seconds until the total eclipse!" Sokka informs us as we continue our path to the Firelord. We approach a set of large doors and pause.
"I'm ready." Aang declares. "I'm ready to face the Firelord."
He blasts the doors down with airbending and we step inside to not see the Firelord, it was someone related to him.
Azula
"So, you are alive after all." The Fire Nation princess begins and we stare at her in shock. "I had a hunch that you survived. But it doesn't matter. I've known about the invasion for months."
——
"Where is he? Where's the Firelord?!" Aang asked Azula.
Azula rose from the throne and pretends to be insulted. "You mean I'm not good enough for you? You're hurting my feelings."
"Stop wasting our time and give us the information." Sokka demands and points his sword at her. "You're powerless right now, so you're in no position to refuse."
"And stick to the truth." Toph ordered. "I'll be able to tell if you're lying."
"Are you sure? I'm a pretty good liar." Azula challenges and pauses slightly. "I am a four-hundred foot tall purple platypus bear with pink horns and silver wings."
I can't argue with that. That was pretty good.
"Okay, you're good, I admit it." Toph admits and traps Azula using earthbending.
"But you ought to consider telling the truth anyway!" I snarl at her, forming fire in my hands. It wasn't the biggest fire it could be, but it was something.
Without warning, the earth trap crumbles and breaks. All of us stare at her in shock and she brushes off the dust.
"When I left Ba Sing Se I brought home some souvenirs: Dai Li agents!"
Two Dai Li agents descend into the room. Aang sends an air swipe at them with his glider; however, the agents quickly conjure up an earth wall that blocks the attack.
——
Aang bursts through the stone wall the agents had created and I swiftly leap through to chase toward Azula. A stone column erupts from the surface, which Aang and I manages to dodge. Toph bends two stone slabs sending the agents toward the two sidewalls of the room. The agents each land on one sidewall and send two earth pillars straight at Toph, who conjures two earth walls to block their attacks. She proceeds to send a stream of earth at Azula, who back-flips onto the throne after being pushed back by the stream.
I race toward her, with an agent following close behind me. I looks up to catch sight of the agent rocketing along a wall. The agent lands before me and builds up an earth wall which Toph breaks through for me and I fly through the hole. I send a fire blast at Azula, who manages to slip away as the blast destroys the throne. I attempt to knock her down by sending a fire blast, however, Azula avoids my attack, leaping and flipping between two metal beams. She lands on the ground and continues running away.
As Azula leaps from one beam to another, I send another fire blast at her only to miss her again and this was pissing me off. Azula slides down a stone pillar that was created before. She flips onto one of the stone walls Toph built and jumps onto the other one before landing on the ground again. She begins running toward a stone wall and a Dai Li agent slides down a stone column to the floor where he launches Azula into the air by bending an earth pillar below her feet. I continue to chase her and Aang and Toph were right behind me. Azula leaps through the hole that was made and Sokka appears on the other side, only to duck down and dodge Azula as she hovers over him and passes through the hole. A Dai Li agent leaps through and Aang, Toph, and I go through and Sokka landed behind us. The four of us chase the princess down the tunnels.
"Aya and I can't pin her down!" Aang exclaims. "She's too quick!"
Azula races through a door, entering a tunnel. A Dai Li agent follows close behind, earthbending a stone wall to block our way, Aang bursts the wall and we chase them. The Dai Li agent is suddenly pushed over by a stone column that jutted out from the side of tunnel's wall. A hole appears and Toph emerges from it. The agent lands into a crevice of a nearby metal beam and prepares to attack Toph only for the her to destroy his rock gloves and metalbend the grooves of the beam together, trapping him. We continue chasing the princess.
"Wait! Aang! Aya! Toph! Stop attacking! Don't you see what she's doing? She's just playing with us. She's not even trying to win this fight!" Sokka protest and we all paused.
"Not true." Azula reasoned, calmly. "I'm giving it my all."
"You're trying to keep us here and waste all our time!" Toph exclaimed, angrily.
"Um, right, I think your friend just said that, genius." Azula sarcastically remarked. "And since you can't see, I should tell you I'm rolling my eyes." Azula rolled her eyes and Toph got angry.
"I'll roll your whole head!"
"She's just baiting you again." I tell Aang.
"Okay, so what do we do, just ignore her?" Aang asked.
"We don't have a choice. We just have to get out of here and find the Fire Lord on our own somehow." Sokka suggested and we turned to leave.
"It's a trap. Don't say I didn't warn you." Azul warned us, coolly.
Aang, Toph, and I pause and hesitantly look back.
"Ignore!" Sokka waves off.
"So, Sokka's your name, right? My favorite prisoner used to mention you all the time." Azula tells Sokka, who stops walking and casts Azula a suspicious glance. "She was convinced you were going to come rescue her. Of course you never came, and she gave up on you."
Suki
Sokka shedded a few tears at the thought of Suki, before charging at Azula with rage. I saw Azula smirk menacingly and I see her sneakily whip out a dagger. I wasn't the only who noticed because Toph pins Azula's hand to the tunnel wall by sending a rock aimed at her wrist. Sokka grabs her by the shoulder, coming face-to-face with her.
"Where is Suki?!"
——
"Where's Suki?! Answer me!" Sokka yells with anger.
Aang grabs Sokka's shoulder. "Sokka, she won't talk."
"Where are you keeping her?!"
Azula just smirked and kept her lips sealed.
——
"Oh, looks like firebendings back on." Azula said when we heard rumbling from nearby.
She kicks her leg in a wide arc, sending a fire blast that nearly strikes Sokka. Sokka takes several steps back as he narrowly avoids Azula's attacks. She back-flips onto the tunnel wall and uses firebending to break free from Toph's earth cuffs. She flips forward, extending her leg forward, nearly striking Aang, who manages to dodge the incoming danger.
I suddenly felt a boulder come in contact with my head and I got shot back to the wall. I landed on the ground with a thud and I felt my wings get strapped to the wall, making me cry in pain.
"Aya!" Aang cries and sends an air blast at Azula who swiftly dodges it. She lands next to me and puts her dagger to my throat.
"Azula, don't!" Sokka pleads and Aang looks at me with anger and worry.
"I'm not going to hurt her." Azula calmly replied and lowered the dagger, making me exhale with relief. "She's my cousin for goodness sake."
"Just let her go!" Aang demands and Azula shrugs.
"Okay." The rocks got removed from my wings and I fell to the ground. Before anyone could react, the ground below me disappeared and and I got knocked out.
Third Person POV
"No!" Aang, Sokka, and Toph yelled as they watched or sensed Aya disappear.
"Where did she go?" Sokka asked and Toph felt the ground, but she struggled to confirm where Aya went.
"I can't tell. It's fuzzy."
"Dad's all the way at the end of the hall then down a secret stairway on the left. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to see you now." Azula smirked and Aang glared at her as she took off.
"I fell for it! I used all up all of our time! Now Aya is gone and it's my fault!" Sokka groaned.
"It's not your fault, Sokka. Azula was ready for us. She had every move planned out." Toph assured Sokka.
Sokka looked down sorrowfully. "And now it's too late."
"Maybe it's not too late. The eclipse is over. But I can face the Fire Lord anyway and get Aya back." Aang protested.
Sokka shook his head. "No. I do think that's a good idea."
"But I'm ready! I came here with a job to do and everyone's counting on me. I can't leave Aya, I just can't!" Aang reasoned, looking down at the thought of Aya gone.
"The Fire Lord knew we were coming this time. We thought we had surprise on our side but we didn't. It just wasn't our day. What we need to do now is go and help our friends." Toph reasoned. "I know, Aya. She's strong and will not go down without a fight. We'll get her back, we will."
Aang looked back and sighed. "I guess you guys are right."
Sokka places a hand on Aang's shoulder. "You'll have another chance. I know you will and we'll save Aya. I'm not losing my little sister."
——
Aang, Toph, and Sokka fly back on Appa and Katara beams at them.
"They're back!"
Aang and Sokka stare at the multiple airships in the sky and he bison lands. Katara runs up to them and noticed a difference; Aya's was gone.
"Where's Aya?" She asked and Ruka immediately looks over to them when she hears that.
Aang looks away with sorrow and softly replied. "Azula took her."
Ruka gasped with sadness and Katara looked down.
"It was all a trap! Azula knew we were coming and she's plotted out every move!" Sokka announces as he and Toph get off Appa. "We've just got to get to the beach as fast as we can. If we can make it to the submarines, maybe we can get away safely."
"They've got air power, but so do I!" Aang opens his glider. "I'm gonna do what I can to slow them down." He tosses his glider into the air and takes off with Momo following close behind.
"Appa, you and I can help too!" Katara hops onto App and Bubbles slides off and into Ruka's arms.
Aang flyes straight toward the airship with Katara coming up close behind. As they were doing that, Sokka talks to the invasion force.
"Everyone, let's get back to the subs!"
Aang approaches a war balloon. One of the soldiers operating it sees him and fires at him. Aang twists around, dodging several fireball, he closes his glider and soars straight through the balloon, cutting through it. The balloon begins falling as it loses air. Katara approaches another balloon, swiveling around once and slicing it clean through with waterbending. The top portion of the balloon drifts upward while the rest falls downward.
The invasion force that was heading toward the fleet was avoiding fireballs at every turn.
With Katara and Appa, Appa's armor is struck with fireballs several times and he grunts. Katara uses water shields to deflect the blasts.
"We can't keep them all back! There's too many of them!" Katara yells.
Dodging another fireball, Aang replied. "Let's join the others!"
——
The Invasion team was navigating their way down the sides of the volcano. The underside of an airship shows and the hatch opens.
"Try and find cover! I think we're about to see some bombs!" Sokka warns everyone.
Aang, Katara, and Appa are seen approaching in the distance. Toph bends a ceiling of earth overhead and undersides of the airships release bombs. The bombs rain down and detonate with one bomb landing very near the earth ceiling, causing it to start crumbling. Toph props it up by bending two earth columns to support it. The airships pass over and the team runs out from under the ceiling to see the airships flying past the Royal Palace.
"Why aren't they turning around to attack us again?" Katara asked.
"They're heading for the beach..." Aang mentions and gets alarmed. "They're gonna destroy the submarines!"
"How are we all gonna escape?!" Sokka hopelessly asked.
Hakoda steps up, helped by Ruka and Bato. "We're not."
"Then our only choice is to stand and fight. We have the Avatar, we could still win and get Aya back." Sokka declared.
"Yes, with the Avatar we could still win and get Aya back. On another day. You kids have to leave. You have to escape on Appa together." Hakoda suggested.
"What? We can't leave you behind!" Katara protested, grabbing her father and looks at the rest of the invasion force. "We won't leave anyone behind! I can't leave my sister behind!"
"You're our only chance in the long run. You and Sokka have to go with Aang somewhere safe." Ruka tells Katara. Katara looks back at Aang and Sokka sorrowfully. "It's the only way to keep hope alive. My daughter is tough, she'll be fine."
"The youngest of our group should go with you. The adults will stay behind and surrender. We'll be prisoners, but we'll all survive this battle." Bato informs everyone.
Tyro approaches the two. "I've got some experience with the Fire Nation prisons. It's not going to be easy, but we'll get by."
Sokka turns, alarmed. "They're at the beach already."
The shadows of the airships is seen moving along the ground and the swamp monster had airships flying directly overhead. Tho and Due attempt to deflect the bombs with waterbending; they manage to destroy some. The swamp monster grabs several more and tosses them away. One bomb, however, lands inside the seaweed figure and detonates. Steaming piles of seaweed land onto the ground. Huu, along with Tho and Due, emerge from the mess, defeated. Five bombs are released onto each of the submarines, destroying all five of them. The team looks on in disappointment. Sokka closes his eyes resentfully.
The mechanist rises on an earth column with Toph and helps Teo mount Appa. "Bye son." They hug.
"Bye, dad. I'm really proud of you." Teo tells his dad as the earth column is lowered.
The Duke struggles to mount Appa. "I'll miss you pipsqueak."
Pipsqueak helps The Duke onto the bison. "Take care, The Duke."
Haru hugs his father. "We'll be back for you, dad."
"If we don't escape on our own first." Tyro remarks and Haru bows to him respectfully.
"We lost today, but we've never been this close." Hakoda kneels down to face his two children. "We tasted victory, and that counts for something. We'll save Aya, I know we will."
Hakoda was upset and angry that Azula took his daughter, but he knows Aya is tough and can handle herself.
"We'll miss you, dad." Katara says and the three of them hug.
"Bye, Dad. We won't be apart for too long this time. I promise." Sokka tells his father.
Hakoda embraces his children with his eyes close. Aang, who was sitting on Appa's head, had tears streaming down his face.
"I'm sorry, Aya." He cries quietly. "I'll save you. I promise."
Katara approaches Aang, puts a hand around his shoulders and smiles at him proudly. Aang wipes away his tears and rises to face the invasion force.
"Thank you all for being so brave and so strong. I'm gonna make this up to you." Aang announces with promise.
The team turns to leave on Appa. Appa moans and takes off as the team looks back sadly at those remaining.
Aang sees the airship in the distance. "I know just the place for us to go where we'll be safe for a while. The Western Air Temple!"
——
Aya wakes up and she was chained up to wall within a cell. Her wings were dark and weary, they were weak and had no sense of power. She had no sense of power and could barely move. Aya tried to firebend, but her arms gave out and she collapses to the ground.
She felt powerless, she felt tired and hopeless. She let Azula take her and she didn't do anything. She just stood there and let it happen. Aya leaned against the back wall and exhaled with panic.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I let everyone down." She apologizes and felt tears escape her gold orbs. "I failed."
The door slammed opened and in walked the Fire Nation princess herself.
"Welcome home, Fire Angel Aya."
——
I'm sorry, that's all I can say. Like, I knew this was gonna happen and I have ideas, so this happened for a reason. Aya has been captured, but she will be back and better than ever.
