Chapter Ten: The Gaang

You had only been traveling for about a day, but your supplies were dwindling. You suspected that most of it was taken by Princess Snot and her guards while the rest had gone bad. You also suspected that the only reason you had been released was because they wanted to follow you. They had no way of knowing that you knew the GAang, but you couldn't help but wonder...

You had changed clothes earlier, finding the dress from the palace to... Fancy. You were back in your outfit from earlier which was old, torn, and hadn't been washed for a few months. Long story short, you looked like a homeless person, which is true, who has been on the run from someone powerful, also true. It smelled as well, which meant YOU smell. You had grown accustomed to the stench of your sweat and dried blood. Your wounds from when you first arrived were healing, but they still hurt. You worried that it could be an infection. It would also explain your sickness from when you stayed with Ursa. You were so grateful towards the woman. She had been through a lot and still had the sympathy to help you. One thing still bothered you. That pin.

You touched the pin and saw something. The people in the vision were complete strangers, but they seemed so familiar. You weren't even sure you were looking through your own eyes. You recognized everything in that moment, but when it wore off it was as if you had experienced someone else's memories. It made no sense. You were so lost in thought that you didn't notice that you had stumbled upon a mansion-like house. You heard familiar voices coming from inside the court yard. Curious, you climbed the wall to see who it could possibly be.

Firebenders. Two of them at least. You didn't want to be taken prisoner again, but before you could run off you noticed something about the two. One was tall, messy black hair and a burn scar. The other was short and had arrows on his arms, legs, and head.

You recognized them immediately. You looked around the yard for the others. Katara and Toph were sitting on the porch watching. After a moment your arms began to get tired from holding you up, so you swung your legs over so you could sit comfortably. You watched them practice what looked like really hard fighting techniques for a few minutes before Katara began speaking, "Doesn't it seem a little weird that we're hiding from the Firelord in his own house?"

You strained your ears to listen to the conversation that had suddenly perked your interest. "I told you," Zuko said, wiping his face, "My father hasn't come here since our family was actually happy. And that was a long time ago. It's the last place anyone would think to look for us." Sokka and another girl were running over to the group, excited about something, when they started to slow down. When they stopped the others ran over. "Sokka? What is it?" Katara asked. He simply responded by pointing to you. Realizing you'd been caught, you hopped down and walked over to them.

"(Y/n)?" Aang said as if to confirm it was really you. "Yeah. It's me," you said. "Wait. You guys didn't know she was there?" Toph said, slightly surprised. "Well not all of us can see the way you do," Zuko said. His dull humor brought a tiny smile to your face. "I don't believe we've met," said the girl that was with Sokka, "I'm Suki." You accepted her outstretched hand, "I'm Avatar (Y/n)." She didn't seem to believe you. "Funny. But seriously, are you a bender?" she asked. "I wasn't joking," you said, "I'm really an Avatar."

"But I thought there can't be more than one Avatar at a time...?" Suki said, looking between you and Aang. "There can't," Aang said. "Ok, I'm confused," she said. You sighed deeply before continuing, "Ok, long story short, I am an Avatar. I was on the run and I got captured. After I was interrogated, I was thrown into a portal which supposedly caused me to travel back in time and now I'm here." She didn't seem to completely buy it. "If you're an Avatar, then prove it."

You were surprised she had the nerve to demand proof, but at the same time expected it. With the flick of your wrist you rose a platform out of the ground. You then used fire bending to propel yourself onto it. Proud of your demonstration, you sat on you platform an looked down at the group. Suki was surprised, or even shocked. "Ok, I believe you."

While she was processing all of .....that... You climbed down. "Good," you said, "Because that is literally the full range of my abilities." It seemed like it took them a moment to register what you had said. "That's all you can do?" Aang asked, disbelief on his face. You shrugged your shoulders, "That and what you dawns do when we first met."

"Wow. And I thought Aang was inexperienced," Sokka said, earning an elbow to the gut. "Can you at least go into the spirit realm?" Katara asked. You tilt you head in confusion, "The what?" They blankly stared at you.

Sokka broke the silence, "So you basically know nothing." Everyone shot him looks. Zuko, who was standing next to him looked like he was going to hit him. "I'm sure she knows plenty," he said, refraining from barbecuing Sokka. You let yourself laugh for a moment, "No. I know as much about bending as a rock." Toph, who had been oddly quiet, spoke up, "Actually, If you know the same information about bending as a rock, you'd be an earth bending master." Everyone just looked at her. "What? Rocks are earth!"

"Anyway," Suki said, getting the conversation back on track, "Not to sound rude or anything, but why are you here?" You explained to them that you wanted someone to teach you and felt that they would be her better options, all things considered. You decided that your meeting Zuko's uncle and sister could wait until later. Obviously you kept the part about wanting to see Zuko again a secrete."Plus Aang's kinda the only airbender, so.... Yeah."

"YOU MEAN I GET TO TEACH SOMEONE?!?" Aang exclaimed. "I don't see why not," Katara said. Long story short, Aang was so excited that he jumped a mile high. Literally. Meanwhile, everyone began retreating to the shade of the porch.

"You're sure I won't be in the way?" you asked Zuko, who had been the last to walk away. "What do you mean?" he asked. "Well, you guys are in the middle of this war, and here I am, popping up out of nowhere and asking for help-" Zuko, with kind eyes, cut you off, "I'm sure you'll fit right in."

Your absence had gone unnoticed on the porch due to Sokka trying to persuade the group into going to a play. You remained quiet and mostly indifferent as they debated going. You glanced at the poster in Sokka's hand. It resembled some movie posters you'd seen for various action-adventure movies (most of which were space themed). It had three people on the cover, Katara, Sokka and Aang. Zuko's eyes were starring menacingly at the top, only his scar was on the wrong eye. It looked like it would be good, but looks can be deceiving. After a few minutes of arguing, they finally agreed to go. You were fine with it. It just meant you'd get to learn your new friends' backstory.
