Chapter - 5 The Sorting

It was later in the next morning, that I woke up in a room. Yesterday’s practicing still hurted his body. I stood up against the pillow on the bed, as I recalled yesterday’s events.

After practicing with Ava (his “trainer” even though he didn’t understand what that meant), they had been called over for dinner by the old man who had been talking with the nurse when he woke up. For dinner, they were taken over to a place, which gave the looks of a restaurant, even though it didn’t look like one.

Ava talked with the old man (no, but seriously who is that guy?), and then after sometime, she took him to a table, very separate from others.

A really queer looking waiter served him something, which — Sammy had mixed feelings for the food — was a plate of minced chicken, with weird toppings on it. I decided that I had no choice but to eat it. I took a piece of the minced chicken and put the tiny piece inside my mouth.

Strangely enough, the taste was mixed. I felt hot chilli, with soothing chocolate, which are really strange tastes from what I have ever tasted before. Definitely not expected from chicken.

I quickly gobbled up every slice, despite the taste. Soon after I finished the odd food, Ava gestured to me to follow her. I followed her. She said that she was talking me to my temporary place, the Demiris, the place for the New ones (by “new ones”, she meant new people).

We reached a place which looked like the Mexico City in 90s; but it was the night sky, the place felt really cool, in fact, I checked the ground once in a while, to know if I was standing on an Snow Desert. I was not.

Ava led me in.

The house sounded really creepy, with no-one inside, and especially the dead silence. Quietly, she turned on the only bulb hanging there, which led us to a room with bed, covered with a straw heap on it.

Ava broke the silence, “This place is really abandoned because there hasn’t been any new addition to the population of Legendreompus in ages.”

“Don’t you guys die? I mean seriously don’t you?” I asked.

“Well, you see . . . That’s an excellent question. But I cannot give you the answer right now. You’ll get the answer pretty soon.” she replied.
After that I guess, my flashback ended.

I jumped off the bed.

Well, let’s say the silence was fun while it lasted. As soon as I opened the door, Ava flew (like, literally) inside. She had golden wings sprouting from her back, and landed right on the bed, breaking it from the middle. Now, what am I supposed to call that what-used-to-be-a-bed.

Her wings shrank back. She spoke, “Day of Sorting for you, ready for it?”

Well, it’s not that good when a flying-girl says some absurd stuff about Sorting. Well, I might have pissed my pants or screamed. Let me add, there’s a ninety percent chance that I screamed. (Not funny, ok.)

Anyways, she grabbed the hold of my hand, and pulled me through the streets. After a long session of walking through the streets of Legendreompus, we reached a house that looked like a Buddhist monastery, it had glass doors. Ava opened the glass doors and we entered, and when she left my hand, it wasn’t a pretty sight.

When I went, the room inside was magnificent. A massive fire burnt inside the room. It quickly kept changing colours between colours: red, orange, and purple. The same, old man who talked with the nurse.
He spoke when we came into his vision, “It’s time for the Sorting, I guess… Let’s not delay it further — Ladies and Gentlemen, WELCOME THE NEW LEGENDREOMPIAN!”

Many people who were wandering around, turned around, started clapping like madness all around.

“Friends,” said the old man. “It’s official, the new addition has come for the biggest thing of his life — SORTING. Let’s not delay and start singing the legendary song of Legendreompus!”

The crowd sang:

Legend-reo-mpus,

The legendary land,

The new Legendreompian,

Is here,

It’s time for the Sorting,

Let’s hope he gets to,

The correct faction where he may,

Perform the best!

Let’s see:

Plasmian,

War of Clan,

Or of the Sacred Order!

May he do good!

On the cue, the old man threw something into fire, which the fire happily burnt off in seconds, with that he shouted: “OFF YOU GO INTO THE FIRE!”

And before I got to say, Wh-Wh-What? Somebody pushed me off, right into the fire.

•••

It was inside the fire, when I regained my consciousness. And for the most part, I didn’t feel my body, it felt like an memory. The feeling was indescribable.

I looked at my body. I was a knight in grey armour. The surface of my body looked semi-opaque, otherwise also translucent.

I saw a horse standing freely. My will forced me to ride it. I saw into the far of the fire we were standing in, dark splotches of colours rushed from the direction towards me.

That, took control of my will over my, whatever you call my form. My ghost, or the memory of someone, I jumped over the horse and it ran through the burning fire (don’t ask me how is that even possible).

While the horse ran with me riding it, I looked behind the dark beams of power rushed through the fiery land.
Upfront, I could see green wisps of fire flying beneath the orange fire.
The horse I rode (okay, sorry, but I was so excited at the moment that I couldn’t stop thinking about it) ran through the blinding fire, while the dark beams or splotches kept coming closer and closer.

I tried thinking of some way to fight them, which led to, well, no conclusion. You can’t think when your mind keeps on thinking about one thing: getting to the green fire. At first, when I had seen the green fire I hadn’t though anything of it but now, it suddenly felt like my mind was addicted to the green fire for some reason.

It was all going very smoothly until the dark splotches got so near that they hit my horse’s back hoof, and the horse slowly drowned into the fire, screamingly.

I felt sad for the horse, while I jumped off the horse, and made myself run towards the green fire. After a little while of running, I found the entrance to the green fire, unfortunately, at that moment, the dark beams striked my steel-capped body.

I lunged to reach the green-fire area, while it’s a good thing that I managed to make the jump into the green fire area, it’s a bad thing that the bad thing managed to get the life force out of me.

I could feel my addiction for getting into green fireplace ending, and on the other hand, I could also feel my life force running out of me.
